[pinhole-discussion] November Mailing
Hello everyone, This is just my monthly message to say hello to everyone on the list, and to welcome all of the new folks who have joined the list in the last month or so. We now have 317 members. I believe that things have settled down from the move that we made well over a month ago. I guess that the only think new that I have is my e-mail and web addresses has changed. If you still have my e-mail address at ja...@kellar.com, and my URL at http://www.james.kellar.com. Please change me to respectively to pinh...@jameskellar.com and http://www.jameskellar.com. The last time I sent out this monthly message, I got a few negative responses. So I'll ask the membership, do you want me to send out this monthly e-mail? Just send an e-mail to pinh...@jameskellar.com, with a YES, I want the monthly E-mail, or NO, I don't, in the subject line. If you want to add your reasons in the body please do. Thanks to all and I'll talk to you soon. -- James Kellar Manager, Pinhole Discussion List pinh...@jameskellar.com http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/pinhole-discussion http://www.jameskellar.com PINHOLE DISCUSSION MAILING LIST Document dated: November 28, 2000 PURPOSE OF THE LIST: The purpose of the pinhole discussion mailing list is the discussion of any and all aspects of pinhole photography. All messages sent to this list should be related to pinhole photography. THE RULES OF THE LIST: There are no specific rules for participating on this list. But everyone is reminded that list membership is a privilege, and list members are expected to treat each other with proper respect. Personal attacks or "flames" will not be tolerated and can get one banned from the list. If you encounter any problems of any kind in using the list, please notify James Kellar at pinh...@jameskellar.com or Gregg Kemp at gregg.kemp@p at ???. Please do not send problems you may encounter to the list. The only ones who can help you solve these problems are James and Gregg. REPLYING TO POSTINGS: Messages sent to you via the discussion list are set up to "behave" differently from messages sent to you by an individual. When you "reply" (using your email program's reply feature) to messages you receive from the list, your reply will automatically be directed back to the mailing list and NOT to the person who sent the message. The list program creates a Replyto: discussion-list@p at ??? line in the mail message header. This tells your email program to send the message back to the list rather than the person who originally sent the message. In order to send a private message back to someone who sent a message through the list by replying, you must change the To: address from pinhole-discussion@p at ??? to the individual's e-mail address. Note that if someone puts the list in the Cc: field rather than the To: field, the reply may go to the sender rather than the list. For this reason, it is ALWAYS a good idea to check who you are sending an e-mail to before sending it. ATTACHMENTS Attachments are files that are attached to an email message. The email system is designed to send messages using standard ASCII character set. Attachments are a way of sending a content that uses characters outside of the ASCII standard. Attachments are not welcome on this list. They are large. They usually can only be accessed with a specific program. They can unintentionally carry viruses. A significant portion of the list is unable to use attachments. Please do not send attachments to the list. All email to the list should be send as plain text. This is the one and only standard used by all computers and all email programs. Some email programs by default send email messages as attachments, the MS Outlook Express and Netscape's Communicator are often set up to send all email messages as two attachments, one in plain text (ASCII) and one in 'rich' text (html format). If you use these programs please change your setting so that your messages will be sent as plain text ONLY. WARNINGS, VIRUSES, TAXES, END OF THE WORLD ETC There are always a number of hoaxes traversing the net, where one is urged to email an urgent warning message concerning some catastrophic new virus, government policy, etc to everyone you know These are almost always hoaxes. Do not send copies of these to the list, even if you are sure it is legitimate. SUBSCRIBING, UNSUBSCRIBING, and changing PREFERENCES 1) go to: http://www.p at ???/discussion/ 2) enter your email to enter your account (this is near the bottom of the page), 3) on your account page, make any changes and then enter your password to make the changes effective. If you do not know your password, follow the first 2 step (above)

You can put paper & film in those film holders to save space of additional cameras! Nice work Kath. RE: [pinhole-discussion] Some images
maybe you could use one of those squishable- collapsible suit cases. They squish flat so you could carry a bunch of them...They show up in flea markets & auctions all the time. For a deeper one glue a few together sideways...They would be a bit taller when squished but almost bellows like in functionality...? Can't wait to see more of your work. andy -Original Message- From: pinhole-discussion-admin@p at ??? But there's a problem: I'm going to have to get rid of my Honda CRX and buy a van to carry the boxes if this keeps up. One of the appeals of pinhole photography for me, aside from the inherent properties of the medium, is instant large contact negatives for gum printing, no enlargement or other intermediate steps required. Thanks Katherine, I took the photos of the slave cabins, I was one of the individuals that complimented you on your work - so this must be the mutual admiration society :-) Wendy Garfinkel
[pinhole-discussion] Slave cabins?
I spent some time looking through the images at the upload site the other day. I really appreciate this site and whoever set it up. It would be nice if information about the pictures could somehow be stored with the pictures but I know these things aren't so simple. Anyway, I was quite taken with a picture (panorama?) of three slave cabins and would like to know who did that picture so I can tell them so. Katharine Thayer

What a remarkable thought. I'm still caught in that wide-eyed gosh-gee state of the pinhole newbie, where the magic of it has me spellbound and I can't wait to see the next picture, so this idea has real appeal to me. I'm getting a sense of the same kind of excitement, looking through the wonderful book of William Henry Fox Talbot's photographs which was published recently. Just think how amazing that must have for him to capture those images. Thanks, Katharine

The box is 12 x 16 x 4 inches; I used a sheet of 11x14 single-weight paper for the negative. Glad you like it. kt

wow If you ever get over to the NJ shore, you need to go to Asbury Park & check out the old casino The Gum Bi process seems to be ideal for pinholes...I guess I'll have to learn it mandatory techie question follows: How much did you enlarge the negatives? Subject: [pinhole-discussion] Some images Since I've enjoyed seeing other people's work, I thought it only fair to show some of mine in turn. Here are four of the 8 pinhole images I'm showing along with 15 lens photographs in my current one-woman show titled "Catching Time: New Photographs in Gum Bichromate by Katharine Thayer" at RiverSea Gallery, Astoria, Oregon, October 28-November 29, 2000. Note: Looking at the images on the site, they all seem a bit washed out (light) compared to the originals. 1. This is the image that was on the announcement postcard for the show. It was made with a 35mm camera body, the one with the malfunctioning shutter. I later replaced this particular pinhole with a smaller one, although most people like the images made with the bigger hole better. http://www.p at ???/discussion/upload/images/kt17thstpier.jpg 2. This is made with a cardboard box, of fishing boats in the local mooring basin. The box I used was longer than normal length. http://www.p at ???/discussion/upload/images/ktfishboats2.jpg 3. This is the same view as 2 but on a windy day with the boats rocking back and forth, taken with a shorter box. This is my favorite picture in the show but I am aware that this much ambiguity and imprecision isn't to everyone's taste in photographs. http://www.p at ???/discussion/upload/images/ktfishingboats.jpg 4. Harry, I always feel kind of dumb when I ask for technical stats in the presence of a good photograph But I don't have much experience yet with people photography & pinholing: Would like to know how much light you needed for that image and how long the exposure was. Erich http://www.fotair.de
