[pinhole-discussion] Who we all are...
Aren't we pinholers a diverse group of people! Some of us hobbyists, some of us professional photographers, yet all interested in the same medium. I have contributed to the list once or twice, but I guess I'd like to re-introduce myself: I'm 25 and live in Toronto. No formal training in photography, just a hobbyist for the last 10 years or so. Currently I'm back in University working on my second degree (Radiation Therapy this time). I got into pinhole photography because I thought it would be fun to make my own cameras. What can I say? I was right. __ Terrorist Attacks on U.S. - How can you help? Donate cash, emergency relief information http://dailynews.yahoo.com/fc/US/Emergency_Information/

Re: [pinhole-discussion] Re: new to this list
Hi, I guess I might as well get into the act. I am not new to this list, having been a member since November 18th, 1999 but this is the first time you are hearing from me. In the meantime, I have accumulated quite an archive of useful material from this group and quite the collection of pinhole photos that have been posted here over the years. I am 53 years old, live in Montréal, Québec, Canada, teach philosophy and have been back to photography, darkroom and all, for the past five years. I work with lenses in 35, 4.5x6, 6x6, 6x9, 4x5 and 8x10. I also collect vintage cameras and lenses from the 1930's to 1960's. I made my first pinhole over forty years ago for a science project in high school; the following year, we built an x-ray tube and since I was also the school photographer, I got to develop the 4x5 x-ray of my hand. I still have it, my hand that is. I just recently decided to get back to pinhole photography as a complement to a photo project I am working on. As a result, I just recently acquired some pinholes from a fellow member of this group. I am following with much interest the discussion on 4x5 pinholing since I want to use the pinholes on my 4x5 Crown Graphic and Kodak Empire 8x10. May the light be with you. Hi. I am 47 years old. I have been doing photography for nearly 40 years. I had my first darkroom at age 8. I've had pinhole cameras for about 10 years. I got involved with this wonderful group when my daughter was doing a science project on pinhole for freshman highschool science. She made it to the state science fair and earned enough points to get an A in a stingy teacher's class. She is now in college and I am still here. Print Swaps in 1999 and 2001 were fun. The pinholeday project had fantastic results worldwide. Hi, I've had this problem and I think I have the answer. First, make sure the tension springs are bent out enough to put tension on the spools. Second, make sure the film is snug across the back of the camera when you put the lid on. Thirdly, and I think most importantly, wind the film slowly between exposures. I didn't arrive at this very scientifically, but when I do the above it seems to be fine. One other thing. When it doesn't work, learn to see the beauty in edge fog! Dave

I hope I'm not asking a question that's already been addressed. An announcement was made last night at the New York Annimation Festival's Canadian animation screening that some other Canadian exhibitions that were planned to take place in New York now have been postponed, not cancelled. Hi, I have had this problem twice in 6 rolls. I think that if if pay close attention to the alignment during takeup then things are ok. This is not something I can just do quickly (or I get the problem you mentioned). Mark m...@interwalk.com http://www.interwalk.com/pinhole.htm -- Original Message -- Following the discussion of lens flare with the Zero Image 6x9 leads me to relay a problem I have with my new 6x9. Film wound through the camera does not wind tightly on the take-up spool. Film is so loose it sometimes binds and I cannot wind the last few frames. Needless to say, loose winding leaves film edges open to light leaks. Anyone else experience this problem? If so, have you found a solution? Re: [pinhole-discussion] 4 x 5 questions
wow, nice ascii art indeed! :) since I've seen a few people ask about this and some people suggest drawing lines on the camera itself, I figured I'd take a picture of one of my cameras that I did that with. It helps to do what Jeff is describing when you actually have the lines drawn on the camera. You can get your eyes right down at the eye-level of the camera and follow each line out to where the edge of the image. http://www.rahji.com/images/composinglines.jpg This camera is made of black foamcore and the lines were drawn with one of those flourescent yellow gel pens that they sell at cash registers in stores. That patch in the middle is where the pinhole is. If you do this, don't forget to take into account the thickness of the camera wall .. in this case, the camera was made of .5 cm thick foamcore so the lines in the upper left of the picture, for example, don't actually touch since they're each started .5 cm in from the end of the camera. I hope this helps! Rob Top view looking down on camera. F line is the plane. B is area inside your bellows. P is pinhole, with lines extending in the space. Re: [pinhole-discussion] 4 x 5 questions
- Original Message - From: Chris Harris cpharrisph...@hotmail.com First, I can't see the image without a lupe. This makes composing on the ground glass impossible. What f/stop is your zoneplate? if it were f/90 or f/64 (better) you shouldn't have problems composing your image, you must use a dark cloth though. You mentioned fresnel, that would also help, to see its effect before you buy an expensive one, buy one of those plastics reading fresnel lens you can buy at bus.depot, office depot, etc, they are just few bucks each. cut it to fit the back of your ground glass. I should mention that I'm used to pinhole cameras without viewfinders, but I thought I'd have the luxury of seeing an image on the 4 x 5 ground glass. If you want to see an image on the GG with a pinhole lens, have two pinholes, actually, 1 pinhole and one nailhole, use the latter to compose and the pinhole to make the exposure. The second problem is that the camera seems to be in focus through a wide range of focal lengths. I can't see any difference between the focus quality at 150mm (which the zone plate is designed for) and, say, 170mm. The magnification changes, but the focus stays the same. I can set the focus at infinity by measuring the distance from the film plane to the zone plate. However, the fine adjustments of focusing with tilts and swings seem at this point impossible. My suggestion is that you find the actual focal length of your zoneplate once and then use that distance everytime after. If you want to focus a zoneplate, is almost a must to do it viewing the aerial image and not the GG. BTW, you'll probably be amazed at how nice the aerial image projected by a zoneplate looks. How can I calculate the correct exposure time beyond this point? Tiral and error until now has not been satisfactory for me. One way to do it is by extrapolating the curve Ilford is giving you. You can do that mathematically or graphically. I usually do it graphically. Take the Ilford curve and reproduce it on a piece of paper, extend the X or horizontal axis to read the maximum uncorrected time you want and then extend the curve with pencil trying to follow the same tendency, then is just a matter of extending the Y axis and graduating both axis. I just did that very quickly and the resulting extended curve gives me the following values, for 60, 90 and 120 secs of uncorrected exposure: 60 secs uncorrected = 475 secs corrected 90 secs = 925 secs 120 secs = 1900 secs Once you have the extrapolated curve, use it and if you get consistently somewhat overexposed film, that means the curve was done a bit to steep. If film is underexposed consistently then the curve needs to be re-done a little more steeper. One thing for sure, extrapolating the curve would give you better reciprocity corrections than trial and error. Hope it helps. Guillermo

[pinhole-discussion] 4 x 5 questions
I recently bought a 4 x 5 Tachihara camera and fitted it with a zone plate. I've been using zone plates on hand built cameras for several years. Large format photography is new to me. So far I've been fiddling with the camera and reading a considerable amount of literature on how to use it (for example, Steve Simon's book). I have quickly encountered two troubling aspects of the using the camera. First, I can't see the image without a lupe. This makes composing on the ground glass impossible. The ground glass is whatever ships as standard equipment with the camera. Must I 1) upgrade the ground glass to a Fresnel (will this solve the problem?), 2) buy and use a comparable real lens to compose (a very expensive choice), 3) check my composition with Polaroids (an expensive alternative)? I should mention that I'm used to pinhole cameras without viewfinders, but I thought I'd have the luxury of seeing an image on the 4 x 5 ground glass. I'd appreciate your help. Chris _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

[pinhole-discussion] Determining exposure beyond.....................
Hi list! Can anybody help me with how to determine exposure when correcting for resiprosity failure when the measured esposuretime exceeds that of the table from the filmvendor? For instance when using Ilford HP5 Plus, the film data sheet gives the added time for resiprosity failure until initial measured 35 secs(corrected for pinhole f stop). How can I calculate the correct exposure time beyond this point? Tiral and error until now has not been satisfactory for me. Any help will be appreciated. Re: [pinhole-discussion] Lens Flare... ZeroImage 6x9?
I've now used one of the last Zero Image cameras for about a month shot 8-10 rolls: no flare at all no light leaks, even under direct sun shots (that is, into low afternoon sun at less than 30 degrees to the camera)... Hello, I have been the happy owner of a ZeroImage 2000 camera, and having been mulling the possibility of buying one of the new 6x9 format versions. My older camera seemed very susceptible to lens flare. The web page say: Matt black paints is applied at the inner part of the camera to prevent light leak. The brass shim is stained black to avoid international reflection and lens flare. I think they mean internal reflection. Does anyone know if the newer cameras are less susceptible to flare? ___ Pinhole-Discussion mailing list Pinhole-Discussion@p at ??? unsubscribe or change your account at http://www.???/discussion/

Gordy, if you have a view camera, that is an easy way to get started, just mount a pinhole on a lens board and presto, you have a pinhole camera. You can shoot either film or paper with any film holder. TLRs (with removable lens) and medium format SLRs, can also be used as pinhole cameras by removing the lens and installing a pinhole in its place. A 35mm SLR can also be used in the same fashion. Having said that, most of us have started (and still do) shooting BW paper inside all sort of containers, namely: Quaker cereal, card board boxes, paint cans, coca cola cans, etc. Here is some controversial suggestion: Pinhole is a lot about trial and error for many reasons, one thing for which I like to avoid as much as I can the almost fortuitous nature is exposure, the way to achieve it is by knowing the diameter of the pinhole, which in turn allow you to find the f/stop of your set up. http://members.home.com/penate/pinhole.html has a link to an article explaining how to measure diameters using a scanner. AW: [pinhole-discussion] Re: [pinhole-discussion]
Hi Jeremiah I am a 59 year old Swiss engaged in pinhole photography for 5 years now. I build my favourite camera using a round tin (13cm tall and 10 cm in diameter) with the hole (0.4 mm) in the round part. For my picture taking excursions I load 16 tins of the same kind with b/w multigrade paper, which covers most of the round inside of the tin. Obviously I leave a slot (2 cm) open in order not to obstruct the hole. I have experimented with Ilfochrome colour paper and plenty of filters, but I did not like the results, even though - finally - I came quite close to the original colours in my pictures. In addition I have used normal cameras with a pinhole (approx. 0.3 mm) in place of the normal lenses. I also built and used a cardboard camera to use with b/w professional 120 roll film. Yet I always came back to my normal tin, because handling and processing is easy and the images I produce are sufficiently different from normal photos. Pinhole photography is fun. Once you start with your own experiments, you are not likely to get bored with it for a long long time. Cheers Markus -Ursprungliche Nachricht- Von: pinhole-discussion-admin@p at ??? You probably are in college and I went to University just 2 years after the introduction of the first scientific pocket calculator. You may be thinking in studying photography and that never crossed my mind. You probably did some pinhole in high school and now have become more interested, you have come to the right place.
