[pinhole-discussion] MF pinhole
I am not sure if I am going to or not, but I just got an Agfa folding camera - mine is 6x9 but there are plenty of 6x6's. Many have seized-up focusing lenses. Mine has a messed up shutter. The lens came off fairly easily, after some research (you just need to know who to ask). I may convert it to PH, but haven't given up on the lens yet. Murray
[pinhole-discussion] 6x9 camera conversion
Hello: I picked up an Agfa Ventura 69 folder. The lens is filthy and shutter is stiff and maybe worse than just that. I would like to get it off for two purposes - Pinhole 6x9 of course, and to battle the lens/shutter if possible. I am puzzled abotu how to remove it - any experience with this? It's supposedly the same as an Agfa Billy Record (What a weird name!)...Vario shutter, 105 mm f/6.3 Agnar lens. Thank you Murray

I got a round container from someone at work today - I eat the square ones. Looks like 2-7/8 mat circle will fit inside bottom, a little loose in the lid. [pinhole-discussion] alt process and Polaroid pinhole questions
Hello: Rescued more stuff (prevented demise in trash) from work. 1) 4 x 20 packs of refrigerated out-of date (2000) Polacolor 59 ER 4x5 film. I understand this stuff shifts blue with reciprocity failure as well as aging. Will a yellow filter improve this? Or should I just play with it? 2) alt-process question - that list was too active for me to keep up with reading and I unsubscribed. I don't want to resub for one question. I was just given a 12x18 (13x22 glass) portable UV exposure unit, only used once or twice and stored 10 years. has six F20T12/350BL lamps close-spaced, no diffuser about 1 from 1/4 glass contact frame. Is this a good candidate for argyrotype/kallitytpe etc.? Had it been a high power metal halide or mercury lamp I'd be concerned about the heat generated. I don't know of BL lamps work for this with practical exposure times or BLB are required. Thank you Murray
[pinhole-discussion] pinhole light falloff vs. circle of coverage question
Hello: If one set up a 4x5 bellows camera for pinhole with an appropriate pinhole for double extension (say 300 mm), placed the bellows at 300 mm but used a 4 x 5 filmholder, would that place the worst of the edge falloff outside the 4x5 image? It seems to me that this would work, at least to reduce the effect somewhat. Murray
[pinhole-discussion] Polacolor 59 ER?
Hello: I just inherited some Polacolor 59 ER from work - expired but refrigerated, and unfortunately spent a couple days in the car somewhere between 0 and 30 F - not supposed to freeze it... So, I guess I'll try pinholing it - and I hear it might also be an emulsion transfer or manipulative film...not sure that appeals to me yet. ISO 80 - I read somewhere blue shift from reciprocity shift. Which Polaroid films need to have negatives 'cleared' in Sodium Sulfite? If this is a film that works for emulsion and image transfer, I hear one can use both halves of the film, with care and knowledge. The point at which it freeze-damages or dries out (expired in 2000) is my main worry for now. Murray

At my high school there was a kid who elected to use an old-fashioned 'David Goliath Bible-style' sling...a leather piece with several feet of cord on either side...he'd throw snowballs with it and we all thought it was cool just to hear it whistle and wonder how far they would go. Accidentally putting a snowball thru a study hall window, cutting a clean hole in the glass was both sobering and scary at the same time (see? - the story was related to pinhole) - nobody stuck around to see if there was an image projected on the wall -we all scattered to avoid getting caught. [pinhole-discussion] Available sizes of black ABS tubing
I live in Michigan - plumbing supply folks say they don't carry ABS because plumbing code in this state does not require it...can be special-ordered, but that would mean a full box or other minimum amount. Apparently Indiana uses it. An architect in town here said I might be able to find other users in-state, like maybe roof or landscape drainage, but he started thinking concrete was more likely, or with holes. Those of you who have sources...how large a diameter have you seen, and what about caps? I saw a 16x20 Unicolor tube in an unopened box today for $75 but a roof leak and possibly photo chemicals had gottenteh box wet. It wasn't a particularly great deal so I didn't 'need' it. [pinhole-discussion] Roman Numerology IXX = 19; D'Arcy download left click onlty for me
I could not download with right click on Acrobat Reader 5.0 (no response at all; have never had that before) but left click was fine. Luckily my day job has high speed (files downloads can get in the megabit/second rate) Internet so I download biggie files there. Roman numerology: There are some weird and less conventional patterns, like IX = V (rare) and maybe the article being 100-ish years old has something to do with it. But IXX sounds 'normal' to me - whenever a smaller 'number' precedes a larger, it is subtracted from the following larger 'numbers'. IXX = (-1) + 2(10) = 19 2003 = MMIII but 1997 = IIIMM The only time I ever saw V used instead of IX was on what I think is an incredibly stupid invention - an LED dot matrix display Roman Numeral Clock...kit, no less, in a wood cabinet. If I wanted a furniture-finish clock, why the heck would I want to look at LED's forming hours minutes and seconds in dot matrix patterns with bad 'Roman Numeral grammar', the V being an example of the latter? It was as ugly as it was stupid. I'll stick with a sun dial if I want Roman Numerals on my clock faces! Murray --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. [pinhole-discussion] camera conversion question
Hello: Gutted some Polaroid rollfilm cameras with 130 mm lens/bellows. Extends a little farther than that due to 3.5 feet to infinity focus adjustment. Pulled lens, kept shutter for experimentation on one. Rear opening of bellows frame is a hair larger that 4 x 3. I took some measurements along 4 axis and calculated a 22 degree angle for the bellows. From this I figured I need a 1.25 entension box to get a 5 image. I didn't calculate or measure the short side yet...might be different due to aspect ratio of 4:3 differing from 5:4. Gonna try ground acrylic instead of glass. Question is, with a pinhole I should have adequate coverage, but do you think my anticipation of angle will prevent 'vignetting' by the bellows or rear of the camera (existing opening?) Thanks Murray

We both picked up on something/someone particularly unpleasant in a couple homes. ...Along the lines of the belief in a camera taking (some of) someone's soul, maybe a little visual 'echo' remains in the camera...if you subscribe to camera metaphysics rather than just plain physics. [pinhole-discussion] developing in camera
Say, why not take one of those Unicolor or Beseler processor tanks (or whatever type has the light trap filler), and make a camera out of it. This seems to solve the questions of a vessel that looks and acts like a camera and a processor tank simultaneously. The pinhole/shutter needs to be leakproof, that's all...electrical tape? Then you'd just need to be sure to get the moisture out of the pinhole before the next shoot. Murray
[pinhole-discussion] develop-in-camera, ABS pipe size availability, how much developer?
Hello: Re: develop in the can Maybe I'm worrying needlessly, but I'd think not only does one need to get the developer into the camera, you also need to be able to efficiently and quickly drain it (completely) to move on to the next chemical process after developer. Re: Previous discussion of ABS pipe Well, some states, like Indiana use and require ABS. Michigan doesn't so getting is more difficult. PVC is available in pretty large diameters. Does anyone know how large a diameter ABS is made in? I'd like to find 8. Maybe the answer is to heavily paint PVC on the outside and over the end caps. Re: How much developer? Anyone know how to determine (sans instructions) how much liquid is needed in a tube type processing tank? [pinhole-discussion] First experience cutting 5 extra thin roll film in the dark.
Suffice it to say my first darkroom experience in 20 years was a little traumatic. I laid the spool in the cannister lid as a stand and began pulling and the momentum rolled the spool across the floor, knocking over the container I was going to put a shorter length in. (I was working on the floor on a large sheet of kraft paper luckily). When I got home, I happened to notice the 'refrigerator poetry magnets' that read: I am angry from mad mean film experiment (Karma?) For anyone that doesn't know what refrigerator poetry magnets are - they are a set of flexible sheet magnets with individual words printed on them - they stick to ferrous kitchen appliances and your guests (or elves?) leave weird little compositions when you aren't watching. [pinhole-discussion] estimating 'view' with homebrew pinhole cameras
Hello: I know some of you will tell me to just experiment, but I am wondering if there is a way to estimate how close/far to be with a pinhole camera of a given format and focal length to estimate composition? Or do we all just develop a realtionship with a particular camera from experience? With my 35 mm pinhole, I used the meter on the converted camera, and pre-viewed my composition thru another SLR with the zoom set to approximate the f.l. of the 35 mm pinhole camera. I'm just not confortable 'blindly' pointing and shooting and hoping I'm not too close, not too far. Can an analogy be drawn between a 'normal' perspective focal length on two different formats? Say, a 50 mm f.l. lens on a 35 mm camera is about the same (whatever same means) as an 85 mm lens on a 120 / 2-1/4 camera. I saw a pinhole camera on the Internet somewhere (Australia?) that had a wireframe 'viewfinder' on top and side. I guessed the manufacturer figured out how big to make the rectangular 'viewfinders' by trial and error. Thanks Murray

[pinhole-discussion] Pinhole-zilla
Sorry, I left my last question off before I hit the send button. Someone explained this before but I wasn't ready for the answer...I was still 'livin small' with the 35 mm approach... 560 mm and 73 degree view angle...can someone translate that into an analogy I can think about, like what kind of lens f.l. on a SLR would produce similar results (I don't know how else to put it in perspective...), or is it format -dependent... ? Thinking about a 560 mm lens on a 35 mm SLR conjures up taking shots of snoozing leopards in a tree on the African savannah without ther awareness. Pinhole from a great distance with detail appeals to me, but I suppose the reality may be disappointing. Thanks Murray
[pinhole-discussion] Pinhole-zilla!
OK - someone get out the tranquilizer gun I just did some calculations for the 18 x 23 bellows. 560 mm f.l., 1 mm diameter, f 560 gives me optimum conditions with 73 degree view angle, 830 mm film dimension and 1075 mm coverage. Looks do-able. I guess here's where I need the wake-up call. I was a bit disapointed with the poor resolution I got with my 35 mm roll camera and 4 x 6 prints. The lack of resolution overrode any potential depth of field enjoyment. With the proposed beast above, or any other 8 x 10 or larger proposition, are the results ever sharp? I have seen 4 x 5 scans on the web, and I'm not sure how much is limited by looking thru a 96 dpi monitor. Thanks Murray

[sorry, if you haven't figured out I have a weird sense of humor by now, well, there's your confirmation] today, and a 4-pack of rubber 4x5 development tanks...I guess it's Goodbye 35mm pinhole for me soon. Maybe I should get referred the camera builders part of the Internet? I suppose I could do a variety of things with the bellows...maybe large xray sheets film for pinhole, plastic storage boxes for developing. Not pinhole, but the pinhole camera I made out of a 35mm Kodak SLR orphaned some Schneider lensesmight make an interesting field camera, but for the shutter. Any advice besides cutting my credit card in half? Murray

[pinhole-discussion] Black foam core wakeup call
I've been thinking about a telescoping camera consisting of a 5-sided box within a 5 sided box and who to have cut the wood for me...but you folks keep reminding me that frugality is reality with a few letters changed...I just got 3- 48x96 sheets of black Gatorfoam in at work, and there's bound to be s-c-r-a-p left over. For anyone who doesn't know what Gatorfoam is (not bedroom slippers - those are Dearfoams), it's an extremely rigid foamcore, and it comes in black and white. The black isn't super dense optical black, but I guess that's what paint is for. Murray - Original Message - From: pinhole-discussion-request@p at ??? To: pinhole-discussion@p at ??? Hi Brigitte, Further in Jim Moninger's article he mentioned that he saw the banding using .5mm slits and so increased the slit width to 2mm thus making more diffuse images with less banding. I can't see banding in the images that accompany his article. The use or elimination of banding is up to the photographer. Marnie Cardozo's images in the same issue of PJ are much sharper, but include banding. I've dedided to keep the banding in the iconoclast images. This quote is from Jim Moninger's article in the Pinhole Journal vol. 15 #1 : These are apparently caused by the light rays / waves with form the two separate images becoming out of phase with one another. Tom Not just out of phase but 180 degrees from each other. This -perhaps- are regions where light (wave) diffracted by one slit is at its maximum peak (+) and light (wave) diffracted by the other slit not just overlaps the former but happens to be at its lowest peak (-), the net effect is darkness, light from one slit canceling out with light from the other slit, weird, eh? [pinhole-discussion] Old cameras and smart shoppers :O)
I am the lucky (?) winner on eBay of a 127 Brownie Starmite and a 620 Bullfrog or Bulldog or whatever the heck it is. There must be a reason people don't list what kind of film :O) someone like me will come along. IF the 127 camera does 8 per roll the magic Croatian film says I'll get 1-5/8 by 2-1/2 image, which might be a little better than 35mm pinhole, but if it's 12 per roll (4x4 cm) it's not worth the trouble cost, etc. Not to mention the concern about whether I'll have to develop the film myself. Here's hoping the 620 conversion to 120 is more practicalthat oatmeal box is looking better day by day. Murray

Subject: [pinhole-discussion] What is Lith Printing? Lith Printing 101 Reply-To: pinhole-discussion@p at ??? Hi Leezy, You asked for it, so here it is: Lith Printing 101! A bit long but thorough... Lith printing is a process which allows you to produce wonderful color shades on chlorobromide-silver emulsion BW fiber-based paper (e.g. Forte PolyWarmtone) using highly diluted Lithographic developer.. With this process, and depending on the type of paper you use (Forte vs Luminos vs Foma), the shadows will print in dark earth tones and the mid-tones will print in peach or olive-green shades. The effect will be somewhat similar to split toning. Further tones can be achieved with selenium or gold toning and/or with advanced chemistry kits. 1. THE PROCESS The paper is overexposed by several stops under the enlarger and then processed for a period of between 8 to 20 minutes - with constant agitation - in highly dilute Lith developer (Kodalith A+B will do, but there are some more sophisticated developer available) which has been contaminated with some oxidized Lith developer saved from the previous session. The image does not start to form on the paper until something like 5 minutes in the developer. (You really need to have a CD player in your darkroom because this can be awfully boring...) The image
[pinhole-discussion] Intaglio on other-than-metal plates
Hello: Isn't one aspect of collograph printing the use of 'plates' made of matboard? I have heard of people doing simple prints on matboard, but not photorealistic images. One of my artists occasionally uses a sheet of acrylic (Plexiglas, Lucite, whatever other name you like), and either etches (I guess drypoint or engraving would be more appropriate due to lack of acid) with any tool, or uses a soldering iron or woodburning tool...this results in coarser lines. Thanks for the photogravure info Colin...I saw one the other day and was puzzled how it was done. Murray
[pinhole-discussion] electrical tape
Someone (3M?) makes a tape called 33+. I decided that means it doesn't stick below freezing after some trouble with it outdoors! So, that's my vote against it. I have about 3 shots left on my first 35mm pinhole roll - I just haven't had the time to drive where I want to shoot the last three. Altoid's box next. Murray

I'm hoarding an Altoid's tin and a Celestial Seasonings tea tin too. There are some French bon-bon hard candies that come in a round can, although some have switched to plastic cans. [pinhole-discussion] oatmeal photons and light leaks
This is a test to see if there is a sense of humor on the list. (Sorry it's not April 1) There are some food-related physical phenomena that came to mind (monentarily) - 1) Visible (in dark room with mouth and eyes open) tribolectric arcs produced by fracturing crystals in wintergreen LifeSavers (tm). 2) 'Frito (tm) effect - (but it also works with carrots - my contribution to science) - about 80% of observers eating corn chips while looking at a computer monitor will observe display anomalies on the screen - at a previous job, we almost thought there was a problem with the isolated power source for a satellite earth station because the computer monitor was 'freaking out' while an operator was eating corn chips. The other 20% of observers lack apparent cranial/sinus resonance thought to be the cause of the psycho-optical phenomemon. I personally had been concerned about adequate removal of Avena Sativa (Oatmealus Genericus) particulates from such cannisters prior to use as cameras. But, then, you probably all noticed I am concerned about numerous trivial issues that delay my progress in the art. :O) Murray (O:
[pinhole-discussion] Fuji reciprocity correction
Hello: A number of the professional film data sheets Fujifilm sent me said no reciprocity correction needed up to 120 seconds...I was as surprised by that as I was by the steep exponential curve once you hit the reciprocity failure region...the multipliers were so high it seems things would be very non critical once you were in the ballpark. Ilford B/W web data had pretty steep curves for reciprocity correction too. Murray
[pinhole-discussion] followup to flash with pinhole question
Hello: Took some full moon shots with 35mm pinhole and color film...it it takes me less than 50 years to finish this roll, I'll see how they come out. Anyone have any familiarity with or idea where to find out Guide Number for a Nissin 28TX Thristor-SO flash (no manual-info not on back)? I took it apart to hardwire it for a project and lost the little slider that gives ISO-f-stop-distance settings. Thanks Murray
[pinhole-discussion] 4 x 5 color film and other blahblahblah
I finally got literature from Fujifilm, and it was only the Professional product line. They had a 4 x 5 film pack that has some weird (to me) extraction and reinsertion capability so it can be transported out of a camera to processing...it sounded interesting. I took three photos indoors with lowest priced color Polaroid 35 mm film in my pinhole-converted 1960 Kodak SLR. I found that although the shutter speeds are off (using shutter release cable and stopwatch), the old meter was pretty accurate compared to a Minolta X700...at least at one indoor light level I checked. I changed the ISO film speed to 'correct it'. I set the Minolta zoom lens to about 38-40 mm which is what the pinhole camera calculated out to, for previewing. I can see thru the pinhole with the SLR, but can't see much more than bright objects - I can tell which way I'm pointing the camera, but that's about all. I hope it doesn't take me as long to finish the roll as those pre-WWII examples! I'll probably try the C-41 B/W film next... I just stumbled on this pinhole idea a month or so ago and joined this list...I'll have to focus on it (no pun intended) because same impulsiveness happened with another topic that is becoming a huge project too! Say, anyone ever make cheapskate print developing trays out of those plastic storage boxes used for shoes, clothes, etc? It would be nice if chemically compatible. Might have to sand the mold release burrs off... Murray
[pinhole-discussion] 35 mm films pinhole conversion, oatmeal box question
Hello: What 35mm films have people in this group experimented with for pinhole purposes? The hardest thing about converting my old Kodak SLR to pinhole has been mounting the pinhole! [pinhole-discussion] New member comments for list message handling and a question
Hello: I'm going to be a phantom pin-holer for a while...I have this need to understand things technically pretty well before I experiment, so I can evaluate relative failures! (Engineering background does that to you). My suggestion is aimed at improving the readability of the digest form of the list. I belong to some other lists, and some have some rules/guidelines that have developed out of readability issues and apparently some Internet users (wireless?) and in Europe pay for the amount of data they receive. Suggestion #1: When responding to someone else's message (creating a thread), delete any message content you don't absolutely need to re-forward. Otherwise, it gets sent again and again and again...my first digest had 9 messages but was 18 pages printed out. Some messages had been forwarded 3 or 4 times ( before text). Doing this will cut alot of clutter, improve readability and save some trees. Suggestion #2: If you are a regular email list participant, make sure your email software has it's forwarding set for plain text rather than HTML. HTML makes for pretty stationery and formatting in email, but it's horrible in listserver email lists. Sorry to pick on list member Joel, because his name appears in a message at the beginning of the digest volume 381, but an example of what I'm talking about follows below...all the 'garbage characters' are html-formatted text being partially digested (gross, isn't it?) by the list processor. Example of forwarded HTML-formatted text passed thru list processor. --part1_76.ce569cb.287df9bf_boundary Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit When you exhibit your pinhole (or any other) photographs at a gallery, etcwhat rules apply to needing written releases from people and property owners? (Almost) lastly, so my message has some pinhole-related content, I am reading pinhole theory and looking at different camera results in anticipation of converting an old Kodak SLR with a very slow shutter by replacing the lens with a pinhole. Lastly, at last, what is meant by 'optimal' hole pinhole diameter? What happens when one strays from 'optimal'? Thanks all - further posts will be less computer and more camera.
