Re: [PLUG] Time to build a new PC

2015-12-05 Thread Neal
I'm currently trying to find a high perf (gaming-ish) laptop, say quad core
i7, to replace my six year old $250-special dual-core that died a couple
weeks ago.One objective is to drive an UHD (3840 x 2160) monitor at
something better than 1080i (1920 x 1080 @ 30Hz) of the old laptop. In my
search I discovered that only the new HDMI 2 spec supports 3840 x 2160 at
60Hz but I didn't run across any laptop that mentioned support for this.
HDMI 1.4/a/b does support 3840 x 2160 @ 30Hz so if you're doing CAD work
and not playing games it's probably adequate.

There's a nice feature vs. version table about halfway down the page at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI .

DisplayPort 1.2 supports 3840 x 2160 @ 60Hz but sadly the only laptops
that have a DP connector seem to be spendy business class ones and even
spendier Macbooks.

Happy system building,
NealS

I think you should add more detail. Show your partition tables, show the
commands you used to install, show the messages that indicate the wrong
thing happened.

I think you have me moving in a productive {possibly not "*THE*
right"} direction.
"Show your partition tables" lead to reading up on fdisk.
I don't know to "show the commands you used to install" as was
responding to prompts from the installer. I was hoping that log
files would give useful info.

In answer to my second question of my debian-user post, I
discovered existence of
"/var/log/installer/". I had read "Debian GNU/Linux Installation
Guide" several times in the last couple of years. That's why I
knew log files existed. Just didn't remember where.

As to "show the messages that indicate the wrong thing happened",
there were none - i.e. a "silent" failure. The only system was
inability to boot the newly installed system.

I'm now setting out to do a series of installs to *CLEAN* media.
That explicitly means use of "dd" with "if=/dev/zero". Yess I do
have hardware dedicated to 'educational' experiments { >
50 yrs of component level trouble shooting has taught me to start

Write down what the installer ask and what you answered.

I wouldn't bother with that, but I'm always encouraged to see the

[PLUG] Time to build a new PC

2015-12-05 Thread Pete Lancashire
It is time for me to build a new PC. I like having to build one, gives me
one of those warm and fuzzy feeling and lets me say to myself I can still
use a screwdriver.

Looking for a main board, Don't do games but maybe in 2016 I will upgrade
to one of the nice high resolution monitors and will want to keep a 2nd
monitor.

I have a smaller scanner that has Firewire (and USB 2 but can not keep up
with the data rate). So at least one PCI-E slot, the old MB I have uses a
PCI card but I dont mind getting a adpater board if I have to.

BTW my two big scanners are SCSI-2 (with SCSI-3 capable interfaces) but I
have a older server PC for them. One maxes out SCSI-2. Someday like to have
a PC for the scanners since the server PC puts out about the same sound
level then when your at PDX getting on board a puddle jumper.

Here is a crappy part, I may want to dual boot. I have some industrial and
control software that only run under Windoz.

Price is an object but not top on the list, a good solid running board is.
I like buying from Newegg but don't have to.

Suggestions ? Success or failure stories ?

Pete,

Can you run those windoz applications in a virtual machine?

I might be able to but two of them 'talk' to serial ports. They are for
programming PLC's (Programmable Logic Controllers).

I highly recommend an SSD (drive) large enough to hold the OS and all installed
apps.

Typically what I do is see what ENU,inc stocks and research which is the
cheapest CPU/MB they carry that meets my wants/needs. The last machine
I put together was a 6-core AMD64 box. When I know approximately what I
want, I might shop around for good prices, but sometimes convenience
trumps better prices (within reason). I think all the parts were just a
few hundred dollars.
