Ziply will increase your billed rate yearly. After they did it twice,
switched to T-Mobile 5G, and happy with the service and the $50 flat rate
lifetime prie fixeé. Be happy to run tests for folks who are curious.

Looking for a printer-scanner, as my brother's Canon has given up the
ghost, and his HP flatbed only scanner has a flourescent tube which is
fading. Sure would like to find one supported by Mint 18 (Ubuntu 16) with
sheet and flatbed feeding to scan, and duplexed printing. What have y'all
got for a resonable price? FreeGeek is out of stock for the forseeable
future, and I would much rather acquire from here than Craigslist.

After my Mint 17.3 64-bit freezes, a shell window appears on my T-410s with:

(repeat last line 14 more times with other sectors)

Is it SSD replacement time?  If so,  how immediately? Yesterday? Have
removed drive and mounted in an ExtraBay in an X300 to backup data while
the barn door is closed and the equine scampers off.

[PLUG] OT: Shoe phone repair

My beloved Samsung shoe phone (SGH-819N, Galaxy Mega 6.3) has what appears
to be a digitizer failure. About half the time, I can't unlock it with a
swipe, and if I can, it locks up after a few taps or swipes. Any
recommendations as to a good shop to repair it?

Chicken wire (2" and smaller grids)  were used in the drywall of my former
house,  a 60's ranch split-level.  Have been told it was common for a
couple of decades around here for fire prevention. Sure does an excellent
job of blocking signal even though the roof was NOT metal.

I am looking  for a CenturyLink user,  with whose help I can move an email
address to.

I moved out of CLink territory and they no longer will sell an address,
but require I pay for a full service. Sooner or layer the X will sell the
house,  and then she pulls the plug on the DSL service there and moves to
Pugetopolis.

Anyone willing to let me park a Q.COM adress on their Internet service? The
single letter doman address is neat for lazy folk like me. Let's talk.

I always power cycle deeply. When the capacitors finish draining (the
 electron pool on the desktop stops growing) and I know it's time to turn it
 back on.


An EE who worked for ITT told me once it takes at least eight secs for
electrolytic caps to discharge after a powerdown, and powerup before that
eight second interval results in early failure. Therefore, when I ask folks
to do power cycles on PCs, I always ask them to wait at least eight seconds.

However, sometimes, a longer delay is called for in resetting cable and DSL
modems. Experience indicates a two minute power cycle allows the ISP to
issue a new DHCP lease, and that also often solved problems with the
consumer gear I was supporting.

From when I worked toll test for a telco in Dixie, I learned 'unregulated'
services are not 'unwatched' by the PUC.

So, there's no banhammer per se. Doesn't mean the call won't get forwarded
to an exec at Frontier who will get sick and tired of the lack of progress
and maybe add more resources. Don't ask, don't get.

And, a tearful story explaining the lost of $ sent to the Consumerist
could also help.

Lenovo ThinkPad T400 virtualization fails despite BIOS set

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T400 with the BIOS version 2.16 7VET6WW dated
2009-04-22 with system board vf27k9434tj and the Intel P8600 CPU.

I try to set up virtualization with VirtualBox 4.3.12 r93733 installed
from Synaptic on Linux Mint Cinnamon 17 'Quiana' 64-bit, but
VirtualBox tells me I do not have VT-d enabled, even though it is
enabled in the BIOS, and I have cycled power since changing the BIOS.

No supervisor password is set. The RAM matches, a pair of 2GB modules.
Those were proven to be important issues on other sites.

How can I get virtualization to permit use of multiple CPUs?

 When you cycled power, did you turn the machine all the way off, or just
 do a Ctrl-Alt-Del? My fuzzy memory is that you need to completely power the
 machine off for that particular BIOS change to take effect.

 In linux, grep vmx /proc/cpuinfo will tell you if the CPU has
 virtualization enabled.

I would suggest the Lubuntu 14.04 distro with the Linux XP theme. Nicely
lightweight for older hardware and familiar looking, yet easy support from
multiple online sources.

Since there seems to be more support for Ubuntu flavors around these
parts,  I would suggest the Lubuntu 14.04 distro with the XP theme
described herein:

I second the opinion of the esteemed Mr Hast. The only laptops sturdier
(and I say this from experience as a Freegeek laptop refurbisher and as a
Kaypro company tech rep) are the aluminum iBooks and the Panasonic
Toughbooks, and both are premium products at a premium price. Think Pads
have parts readily available and profuse manufacturer's repair
documentation, have a higher resale value (which validates their value) and
just plain last. There's an X60 at
