Re: [PLUG] Can't see files in Virtualbox shared device

2018-03-25 Thread Chuck Hast
The Garmin updates do not seem to change the file size that much so I assume
that they are just adding new info and perhaps removing what is not needed.
Of course as you add info to the map overlays there will be an increase in
file
size. But it is a gradual thing unless something "springs up over night".

I just wish that Garmin had a Linux tool so as not to have to use Windows.

A problem that can come up with the free map updates for life, is running
out of room to install those updates. I'm not sure if adding an SD card
after years of use, allows you to fit newer map updates on the device, or
not. Maybe someone here knows that. Also, I ran out of space for my saved
destinations years ago, & have to delete others just to make room for new
ones. Even with these issues, I still really appreciate the usefulness of
the Garmin GPS. Using it is anonymous, unlike using a smartphone for
navigation. Plus, a Garmin works no matter how far out in the boonies you
are, no need for cellular data.

Yes, 8 yrs is about the age of the one I have to pay for the updates too.
The
other one is just a year old but I had one that was about 2-3 years old
(bought
it when I was doing field service in the NW) and it also had the maps for
life.

I guess Garmin just will not change the process for the older units.

  That's a thought.

What I've learned about the Garmin maps over the years is that only newly
built streets are not to be found, and very rarely do I go to these places
in Portland, which is the only 'large' city in which I use the GPS receiver.

The original map is great for finding addresses in cities outside the
Willamette Valley.

John,

Keep in mind that folks writing comparisons and reviews have different
needs and biases. The reasons they use a virtualizer may be quite different
from your reasons.

I've seen many references on mail lists to hardware virtualization yet
know nothing about it. Your hardware is probably sufficiently new to make
use of it. Whether this would allow you to do what you want is still to be
determined. Just a thought, anyway.

Good luck!

Rich,
How old are your Garmin units? I have an old one that is pay by upgrade but
the newer ones are upgraded for life. I have had those now for several
years.

John,

I switched from virtualbox to qemu and learned that it's easier to use
once set up. My installation is on a laptop and intended only to update the
firmware of Garmin Nuvi GPS receivers. But, since Garmin wants $100 per Nuvi
per map upgrade (and there are two units here) qemu sits unused but
available.

Just now I went to launch it and, as it started loading it seemed
really slow, and then I saw the familiar Ubuntu icons on the bottom of
a black screen. I watched a couple minutes more, and then it became
obvious that VB was not launching my virtual machine but, rather, was
launching 17.10 from the DVD that was in the drive.

I killed it and tried again, definitely launching it from the VB menu,
and got the same results. At that point I said " this
" I killed it again and then deleted the machine from the
VB menu.

Right now I am trying again. And if I don't get something that actually
works I may install a completely different VM solution and give up on
Virtualbox.

I was suggesting you use sshfs in between the VM host and guest, instead of
VirtualBox's shared folders.

This sounds like it's not trying to execute the file, but opening it in
Mousepad. Which of course, doesn't work because it's not a text file.

Did you mean that sshfs installed on the host is blocking the guest
from seeing and mounting shared folders? Or did you mean that I should
install sshfs on the guest and use it to access shares on the host?

I have recently become aware that Guest Additions do not appear to be
installed on the guest, or at least, not correctly installed. Since the
initial installation there has been a
folder /media/jjj/VBOXADDITIONS_4.4.46_105129. (4.3.36 is the version of
Virtualbox installed on the host.) At the top of the guest window there
is Devices > Insert Guest Additions CD Image Clicking on it brings
up a file browser window with installation programs for Linux, Windows,
Solaris. I selected VboxLinuxAdditions.run, made it executable and
double-clicked on it. That popped up a Mousepad window that said:

The document was not UTF-valid
Please select an encoding below.
( ) Default (UTF-8) (*) System (UTF-8) ( ) Other [ISO-8859-14]
Invalid byte sequence in conversion input
[Cancel] [OK] #[OK] is grayed out

The 8859-14 was grayed out, but I assumed that the run software in
Xubuntu 17.10 had detected that as the byte sequence for the file, so I
selected it, but the OK button remained grayed out. The button with
8859-14 is a drop-down which gives a lot of other encoding formats. I
tried half of them but the [OK] button remained grayed out.

At this point I am stuck. Any suggestions?
