Domains are about $10/year, they include privacy options for free, and I think they also provide free DNS but I didn't bother with that. Their low end SSL certs are the cheapest I've found. There's also Name.com, which I intend to try out when a domain is up for renewal. You put in your phrase as a search term and it will come back with your phrase and about a hundred different TLDs for you to choose from. They'll also let you use their beta search tools that index twitter, and/or let you find names dealing with a certain geographic area. The only thing they've tried to sell me so far was free google apps. and even then it's passive. Unfortunately it looks like you are stuck with 1and1 until the domains have been registered for 60 days. Sorry should have been more clear. I only wanted the domain. The webhosting was a freebie with the domain and i only cared about it in the it wanted to rapidly get a file up that google wants to see to verify domain ownership. Not being able to edit html is ridiculous. Top posting because my nook doesnt give me the option not to. I have been using IXWebhosting for five or six years and have been very happy. You can do just about anything and use any software you like. Their "website" builder software isn't very good but you can use any third party builder and of course you can run any CMS of your choice. Domain registration is free with a plan. http://www.ixwebhosting.com and they don't try hard to up-sell. I don't know why you would expect DNS and Web hosting with domain registration, they are three different things. They HAVE to let you set the name servers though. Make sure you're setting the name servers with the registrar, though, not as a dns record. Also, they won't be able to transfer it away for something like 60 days ( ICANN policy, I am told). Try to find how to set the nameservers. I will log into my 1&1 account and see if I can write you some instructions. What is the domain name so I can check how it is currently setup for you?
