Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: BBCiPlayer Plugin (UK only)

2014-11-09 Thread rodlogic

AFAIK there is a unique programme identifier in the URL - begiining at
the moment with b0 so for example b0f5de46 would identify a programme
(TV or Radio) programme. But you need the URL - this works on iplayer
Radio - the URL for 30 day catch up prgrammes include this identifier -
so maybe it can be used as a gludge to re-enable the Iplayer Extras
plugin ?

There is some discussion on the get_iplayer mailing list that rtmp
streaming may cease some time in 2015 with only Adobe HDS available for
BBC radio. Just a heads up, and a concern that this would permit DRM if
the BBC chose to implement it (which would probably be the end for
iPlayer plugin except for podcasts).

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Why does LMS removes MP3 idtags ?

2014-11-09 Thread JJZolx

If the stream is transcoded from something other than Mp3, it won't have
any of the metadata from the original file. If you're seeing this from
an Mp3 file, it may be that LMS is still doing some kind of transcoding,
perhaps for bitrate limiting purposes.

The iPlayer Extras used the feeds to get the BBC PID (i.e. as uyou call
it the identifier starting with b0). The iPlayerExtyras plugin then used
the iPlayer plugin to use the PID to play the item. The feeds are
turned off so there is list of PIDs.

The iPlayerExtras schedule and archive menus still work as they do not
use the feeds. The Archive menu already has 30 days of program form
R3 and R4. In fact there has been for a long time many years of archive
programs available such as In Our time and Desert Islands discs.

Be prepared to be surprised!
I have done a clean install of the new Max2play image as suggested by
flysurfer. Installed 7.9 nightly(Nov 9); added my old pref folder;
checked all plugin updates, hit apply, restart; surprise no plugin
updates. It was always working with 7.9 until now, but not with 7.8.0.
After a few tries I have downgraded to 7.8.1(nightly) as Nojec and
everything went ok; plugins updated as it should.
I thought these update plugin problems were related with Cpan and should
have been solved with the new image, even with 7.8.0.

Jim Simmons, who is responsible for the BBC’s online radio streams, has

BBC have chosen the AAC codec and http streaming (includes HLS, HDS and

Any mention of DRM, either for or against?

If the BBC really needed some sort of DRM they could enable it right now
with encrypted rtmp - the fact they haven't, could indicate their
preference.

The BBC isn't a conventional for-profit enterprise, and my guess is that
it would get in a real mess with its obligations under the license fee
if it introduced DRM to its UK audience. But it's just a guess.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: BBCiPlayer Plugin (UK only)

2014-11-09 Thread bpa

I think one of the main reasons for BBC to changeover to HLS/HDS etc.
technologies is that it would allow a single format to be used for
video and audio and it has dynamic rate changing so that bit rate of
video and audio streams can be changed frequently to the best rate
that suits the connection quality. This has become very important with
many more 3G/4G connections where data rate of connection can vary as
user is mobile. Instead of current situation where user has a choice of
to 3 fixed data rates and user has to decide which to play - too slow
and quality suffers, too fast and possible stuttering.

I should have said that for live (not on demand) radio streams, the BBC
will also provide SHOUTcast mp3 streams.

I make extensive use of the Squeezeplay client to listn to BBC Radio
London on a laptop that is buried in the wall and run with the lid
closed, and uses a TV and wireless keyboard/mouse(when needed), I also
use squeezeplay on my regular laptop when I'm working from home. These
