Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Alternative Web Interface (beta)

Great interface. I noticed new music isn't loading for me - just a
spinning wheel. I have new music limit set to 500 items. Known issue,
or?

Also would be great with support for streaming services such as Spotify
and WiMP - but maybe thats out of the scope?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Smart Mix plugin

2013-01-05 Thread bhaagensen

Now that I've got my scanner-problems sorted, I'm also up and running
Smart Mixing in all its glory. Its very cool!

I do echo the requests for more control over local vs. sourced music.
For me it amounts to quite different use-cases. Mixing my own collection
has a flavour of best-of/specific-genre-mix, while sourcing from
Spotify creates mixes more of the discover-new-music-type.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Spotifys Complete Collection - possible?

2013-01-03 Thread bhaagensen

Hi,

Spotify has this very cool addon called The Complete Collection, which
essentially is complete CD-booklets browsable (and of course playable)
through their client. Something like this would be infinitely cool and
useful to have in the Squeezebox-system. I couldnt find any info, but
I'm guessing Spotify has an agreement with the rightholders - and thus
it would not be straightforward to adapt, but is there any info out
there? Could something similar be achieved? How exactly does Spotify
obtain rights and access to the booklets?

The closest to date are the excelent albumreview/bio-plugins from
mherger.

Regards.

Turns out my problem was the same as others have reported -
incompatibility between the newest version and my AMD XP300+ (or

Triode: Could be an idea to post a note on the first page - perhaps
indicating the lowest spec AMD the newest version will work with?

Anyway, downgrading to 2.04 works.

One reason is that the entire Squeezebox/Server system has by design
*read-only* access to the music library. Its an invariant, and you'll
find that no features/plugins can write to the library.

Of course its possible to do this in many ways, but it would require
lots of funny hacks (from a design/security pov).

As I understand, this should not be the case (unless iPeng is in the

Is this a sign of something not working as intended?

Interesting. I've got something similar. Although it doesn't have to be
the first song in a playlist - but rather the first *played* song. I
mostly play by album, and often when I start playing some track from
some other [i.e. not in the current playlist] album, the player doesn't
start, but after a while, skips to the next track which indeed starts.

As far as erlands plugins, the ones involving the database, that I am
using, are only MultiLibrary and CustomBrowse.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Erland: Lyrics plugin

2010-10-31 Thread bhaagensen

Erland, I've obviously only tested the updated plugin very little so
far, but all indicators are pointing right towards the sky :) In
addition to acknowledging the various sources, its also useful [I
suppose] to see that the new sources are contributing so much to the
much improved hitrate. I'll spend some more time using it, and report
back with more details if needed.

Anyway. I am really greatful for this* I have been seriously
contemplating, and also somewhat started, the process of manually
scanning or downloading lyrics, saving them in text-files, and using
the fileviewer plugin for accessing them through the various SB-UIs. I
suppose this somewhat illustrates my appreciation of this work since
the size of my library is approaching 2K albums.

Is it in the list of recommended plugins. It most definitely belongs
there!!!

* I urge everyone finding this, and/or any of erlands other plugins,
useful to take note of the last part of his signature :)

Erland, this sounds so cool!!!

As I said above, I don't know whether iSub also gets lyrics from

But I will give you some specific examples as soon as I can - which
will be sometime this afternoon.

Again, thank you so much for spending time on this at all.

The Gaslight Anthem/American Slang/07 - Boxer | 0/1/1 | 1
The Gaslight Anthem/The '59 Sound/5 - High Lonesome | 0/1/1 | 1
The Gallight Anthem/The '59 Sound/2 - The '59 Sound | 0/1/0 | 1

Charlotte Gainsbourg/IRM/5 - Heaven can wait | 0/1/1 | 0
Neil Young/Harvest/5 - Are you ready for the country? | 0/1/1 | 1

whether iSub actually retrives the lyrics via the server, or from
elsewhere (its as such an indepenent app and not developed by the
subsonic-fellow). But the lyrics are available in/from the server

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Erland: Lyrics plugin

2010-10-25 Thread bhaagensen

Hi all,

The lyrics plugin is IMO the coolest non-essential (as opposed to
playing music) feature - together with mherger's AlbumReview and
Biography. Or I could say that it is showcasing the true potential and
advantage of computer based playback :)

But the hit-rate is very low for me. Wonder if anything could be done
to improve this. I suspect there are legal issues involved, but don't
really know any details at all. I only know that other software achieve
much better hitrates. E.g. the iSub-app for the iPhone.

A number of streaming applications use caching in various incarnations
including persistent storage. Moreover, some let the user decide which
files to cache...

I'm guessing this is acceptable, if it can be argued that the main
feature of the application remains streaming (and not caching).

Very nice erland (again). I guess it could be an idea to have two
'modes'. One random when used as a screensaver. And another not-random
for use when browsing.

In the latter case obviously some optimisation is needed in order to
make it more useful. Its probably never going to be as fast as say the
regular album browsing method. But things such as remembering where the
position in the list upon exiting/entering, perhaps switching into some
kind of letter-only mode when things go really fast etc. could be nice.

Anyway, its looking surprisingly good so far.

Hi,

another small issue. Normally pressing the album icon starts playback,
while pressing the text drills into the hierarchy. In the search result
list it works the opposite way (at least at the track level).

pippin;418459 Wrote:

Yes, but to quote your own words that space is already taken ;)

Don't know what your plans are, but somehow I think it really would
make sense to have such a shortcut from the Now Playing screen into
an arbitrary (by configuration) place in ones library/radio/services
(via Favourites). At the same time I can see that it might not be worth
the effort saving a single operation or two as iPeng is never going to
achieve always-instant-super-quick-one-touch-mega-convenient access
anyway.

A related feature that could be useful is volume control from the
browsing interface. The reasoning is that volume sometimes needs to be
accessed really fast (phone calls etc).

InguzDSP is only free as in beer (contrary to e.g. SqueezeCenter which

Presently I think that you need to reinstall at least the DSP part of

One thing that doesn't appear to work very well is handling

where one is sometimes connected and sometimes not connected to
SqueezeCenter. I don't know whether it is supposed to handle such
scenarios, but for me it is almost required. If necessary I'll

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Alien install failing on Ubuntu

2007-11-11 Thread bhaagensen

I still have a question or three though ...
Why does AlienBBC require the slimserver user change? My other plugin
( Extended Alarm ) works fine under root:root.
The whole of the rest of the slimserver directory tree is root:root.
Should that not also be slimserver:root to maybe avoid future problems
 with other plugins?

Sorry your reasoning, while somewhat logical, is too simplified... and
wrong :) Just at look at the owner of all files in /usr/bin. Basically
the /usr/share/Slimserver directory should only be owned by root and
only writable by root. slimserver should have appropriate
read/execute permissions. The location of writable user data is
configurable (by default /var/cache/slimserver).

It's a bit of a long story. If you're interested I can try to elaborate
but... I think the problem with AlienBBC is mostly due to a bug in the
AlienBBC package.

I can find no user called slimserver on my system so it doesn't
 appear to have been created.

Are you sure? slimserver is not a regular user account. It's basically
a non-interactive user with no login shell. All is ok if 'cat
/etc/passwd|grep slim' returns something.

Obviously something went wrong in the install, is it worth uninstalling
and trying again? If so, what is the preferred method? Should I download
the .deb package and run that or should I use apt-get?

From what I've read I see no indication that something is wrong with
your installation. apt-get is the same as installing the deb, with the
addition that it automatically fetches the deb file if you added the
repo. to /etc/apt/sources.list.

I don't know the details. You need to login on the nas using either
telnet or ssh. Putty can do both ssh and telnet. If you're on MS
Windows you can connect using telnet from the regular command promt
(cmd.exe). Go for that if you can. From the thread here:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36703

I guess the portnumber is 13131. So to login write something like
'telnet ip-address-of-nat 13131'. Perhaps someone with specific
nas-knowledge can provide more details. Perhaps the login procedure is
described in the manual ? It's available online here:

http://www.qnap.com/download_detail.asp?pl=1p_mn=TS-109
Proct_name=Manual

When you are logged in you need to change to the directory where
slimserver and alien is installed. The commands should be issued from
the Alien directory.

Come to think of it. Are we sure this is the problem? You should be
able to see the alien plugin in the server settings. Also if you check
the slimserver log files there should be some 'permission denied'
entries indicating that this is the problem.

James would know this much better than me, but due to black magic it was
not sufficient for me to delete the 'plugin-data.yaml' file. What worked
for me was:

0. Make sure the plugin is installed in the correct directory.
1. Shut down slimserver, and be sure its dead.
2. Delete the entire contents of the cache-directory, where
cache-directory is the directory containing among other things the
FileCache directory.
3. Start slimserver and rescan.

Maybe thats what you already tried ?

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Issue with custombrowse on SB

2007-05-30 Thread bhaagensen

Hi,

I just came across the following problem using custom browse. The
problem is that tracks can be dispayed as '[PLAYTIME]' instead of the
track name.

To reproduce:

1. Use the squeezebox
2. Search for an artist.
3. For some found artist, browse to an album, then to the tracklist.
Then all tracks are displayed by the name [PLAYTIME]

Can this be verified by others, or do I need to dig deeper?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Problems setting up Multi Library

2007-05-24 Thread bhaagensen

Hi,

The problem was that easytag's comment field gets written as
DESCRIPTION, so (almost) all my comment fields were blank. I used
metaflac instead. A few questions:

Custom browse bug?:
1. When editing menus in the web interface using danish letters æ, ø
and å, does not work. Editing the xml files works, but I'm getting lots
of error messages in the terminal which I think is related to that. The
errors:

2007-05-24 21:22:32.0802 ERROR: Failed to parse menu configuration
because:

no element found at line 5, column 48, byte 139 at
/usr/lib/perl5/XML/Parser.pm line 187

Custom browse bug?:
2. I'm using the default menus (except I translated the menu names).
Browsing by New Album the tracks are not shown in order. Sometimes they
are shown in reverse order, sometimes they are shown as 4 5 6 1 2 3,
sometimes 5 6 3 4 2 1. It a bit random. Is this a bug ?

Multi library:
3. I tried putting the multi library I created in the root menu of the
SB, by enabling show in home..., disabling show enabled menus, and
enabling the multi library I have on the SB configuration page. Now the
library is displayed the right place, but it is empty.

Multi library feature req:
4. When using the mixers from the SB, would it be possible to show an
intermediate menu showing the mix after a mixer have been chosen ?
Alternatively just ask wether to play the mix, similar to the default
behavior for music magic.

Custom browse feature req:
5. On the bottom of the browse pages the standard menu has links for
going to the next pages. With custom browse one has to scroll back to
the top of the page.

I can't think of more right now, but I'm sure I have more questions and
comments since this is a very large extension(-system). And it's working
impressively well. I have already disabled the internal menues and use
only cb/ml.

Thanks,

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Problems setting up Multi Library

2007-05-23 Thread bhaagensen

Hi,

I've tried setting up multi library and it appears to be working,
except only a single album show up in the library. I've set it up to

(together with most of the other plugins from erland). Also the albums
which should have been appearing in the new library does show up in
all the default browse menues provided by custombrowse and also in the

The only clue I have is that while my music is organised under
$HOME/Music/Artist/Album/, but the particular albums which works is in
$HOME/Music/Album

Thanks for any advice.

if there had been a partial attempt to use the default skin.

A bit strange. The changes to the slimserver script should not affect
the the operation of slimserver in any way. Can you confirm that if you
use the original script, slimserver starts correctly?

 STATUS=`ps -e | grep $PROGRAM | grep -v grep | wc -l | awk '{print
 $1}'`

(I guess this is identifying whether MMS is currently running?)

Yes, that's the idea. Try substituting '-e' with 'aux'. I've noticed
that on my computer it seems that if MIP is running issuing
'MusicMagicServer start' detects this and does not try restarting MIP,
so the test should be unessecary. You could try removing it, which
would leave only

USER=diana
PROGRAM=MusicMagicServer
( sudo -u $USER -H $PROGRAM start )
sleep 10

I added the sleep to make sure that MIP is up before starting
slimserver. It could probably be shorter than 10 s.

And if you care:

STATUS=`ps -e | grep $PROGRAM | grep -v grep | wc -l | awk '{print
$1}'`

works as follows. A | B sends the output of command A to the input of
B. 'ps aux' lists all running processes. 'grep $PROGRAM' picks the
lines where the string $PROGRAM occurs. Since 'grep $PROGRAM' is itself
a program mentioning the string $PROGRAM, 'grep -v grep' removes the
lines where the string grep occurs. 'wc -l' counts the number of
newlines. 'awk {print $1}' makes sure that only an integer is finally
output (for the comparison made later in the script). You can try it
out in a terminal and see how it works. Start by:

$ ps aux

look for a program named e.g. NAME

$ ps aux | grep NAME
$ ps aux | grep NAME | grep -v NAME

and so on...

the line 'sudo -u USER -H $PROGRAM start' means that $PROGRAM should be
started as $USER, '-H' means that it should also set $HOME to
/home/$USER. The whole thing to make sure MIP pics up the analysis date
and stuff genereted by $USER and stored in $HOME/.MusicMagic

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] SS + MusicIP - Ubuntu

2007-05-20 Thread bhaagensen

A quick and (very) dirty fix could be the following:

First of all I don't think you need to do anything special to set up
MIP headless, I didn't. To test try starting MIP headless by typing
'MusicMagicServer start' in a terminal. If it's not in you're path,
change to the directory where you have MIP installed and type
'./MusicMagicServer start', restart slimserver and see if that works.
When/if that works go to the next stop.

I'm assuming musicip is in your path so you can start musicmagic by
typing 'MusicMagicServer start' in a terminal. Otherwise you need to
substitute the full path e.g.

/home/diana/MusipIP/MusicMagicServer

for MusicMagicServer below.

I'm also assuming your username on linux is 'diana' and that when you
manually start musicip you are logged in as diana. Otherwise substitute
as needed below.

1. Type 'gksudo gedit /etc/init.d/slimserver' in a terminal
2. After the line '# Updated By:Dan Sully' add the following lines

USER=diana
PROGRAM=MusicMagicServer
STATUS=`ps -e | grep $PROGRAM | grep -v grep | wc -l | awk '{print
$1}'`

if [ $STATUS -eq 0 ]
then
( sudo -u $USER -H $PROGRAM start )
sleep 10
else
killall $PROGRAM
sleep 10
( sudo -u $USER -H MusicMagicServer start )
fi

3. Save the file and try restarting slimserver.

I know it might sound terribly complicated but it isn't. The basic idea
is that you figure out what you would write in a terminal to start MIP
headless. This is then added to the file /etc/init.d/slimserver, which
is the file which starts slimserver. If you run into problems just
reply, and I'll try and walk you through. It's also a bit easier if I
know more about the setup you have.

I'd be somewhat interested. In general I would be happy with basic
playback of music and internet radio with the extra addition of some
nice browse by artwork method.

- Browse by artwork ?
Yes that would be really cool.

- Other types of browsing ?
Album,Artist, and Playlists would suffice for me.

- Searching ?
Very important. For large music collections this is a must for finding
the things you want.

- Browsing internet radio ?
Playing internet radio also has a high priority for me.

- Selecting and playing playlists ?
See browsing.

- Managing playlists ?

Adding to the 'now playing' list would be nice. But anything more
advanced than that is best handled by other means I think.

- Anything else ?
Well, just basic playback control. play, next, previous, stop, volume.

However I am following the elisa media center [1] project by fluendo
[2] with great interest. It's still in it's early stages, but they seem
to be having, among other things, a very nice opengl based framework for

there are some nice screencasts at their webcast showing their current

I have some confidence in this project becoming a really good media
center solution within forseeable future: fluendo appears to be a
serious company. They among other things offer licenced mpeg4, mpeg2,
windows media, and mp3 codecs. My point here is that perhaps it would
be worth checking out wether your ideas could be realized using

My impression was that linuxmce already integrates with slimserver/sb.
I have not really understood exactly how though. Perhaps you know? From
what I gather linuxmce can spawn slimserver. So if you're using the
squeezebox, it will still be controlled by the slimserver, which in
turn is controlled by linuxmce? Or? At least this is roughly how I
figure the mythtv integration in linuxmce works. But yes. Perhaps it's
an option?

Wise words ! Too add some comments (or ramblings)

I'm not saying its directly comparable, nor that slim should play
copycat but... Like it or not, OS X's (now slightly dated) Aqua UI,
Vista's Aero UI, the even more advanced accelerated X server from xorg,
and the countless examples of modern web-designs and applications using
rounded corners, glassy surfaces, transperancy, reflections, shadows
and animations, must give some hints as to what a modern UI behaves and
looks like. Compare that to the slimserver interface which bears more
similarity to the application my bank accountant is using when
calculating how much red ink is needed for our meetings. Add to the
fact that the use of the afore mentioned effects seems to be
particularly prevalent in the domain of multimedia applications, and I
dare claim that I'd be pretty difficult to convince otherwise.

I am quite sure that the current interface leaves much to be improved.
Not saying that the UI should be some insane cryengine2 thingy. For the
majority of my use cases a simple interface with a semantics that wifes,
husbands, guests, and children can understand, and which makes some set
of core functionalities available and presents them in a pretty way,
is my whish. It's been said before, but candidates for such core
functionality is, of course, playback control and along with that
browsability of the music collection. The slimfx interface could solve
this pretty well I think.

Another thing could be visual presentation of the music collection,
i.e. albumart. I mention/repeat these because they are exactly the sort
of things I did with my music collection before, only now the
possibility is there to do it much better.

I know this has been discussued many times before, I just couldn't keep
my ... shut. It's not meant as something the community should take on,
rather I wrote this because Slimdevices seems to actually listens to
its users. Looking forward to my next apt-get upgrade ;) Thanks for
reading.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: slimfx - Flash-based Skin / Control App

2007-02-08 Thread bhaagensen

Hi, in case you're not aware of it the following steps seems to crash
firefox when using slimfx.

1. Hook up a couple of players to the slimserver. E.g. I have two
softsqueezes and my squeezebox.

2. Open slimfx.

3. Select the different players in the slimfx interface.

4. Disconnect one of the players.

5. Select the different players in the slimfx interface without
reloading.

6. Firefox freezes one me. Might be necessary to do a reload at this
time to provoke the crash.

This might already be well known as a consequence of the nowplaying
info not alwasy being synched with the players. Just thought I'd let
you know.

2007-02-04 Thread bhaagensen

VERY nice ! Just some thoughts to let you know that it is appreciated,
and possibly what could make it even better, to me at least. I think
that this, by far, is the best proposal for a up to date and modern UI
look and feel. Fast, nice to look at, drag and drop :)

I second the opinion of in a earlier post where it was suggested that
future development could focus on improving usability (as opposed to
fancy effects). I'm thinking of things like internet radio. Personally
I also think that keeping it as (mainly) a playback interface could be
an idea. Perhaps with some clever way of spawning the default interface
for setup etc.

PS. I had/have no objections towards the default interface, but after
trying this I really think it improves the user experience.

Strictly speaking it's Ubuntu, but the Debian package works fine for
me, with the exception of this problem.

From my reading of the Debian package it has a dependency on
libtext-unidecode-perl, which installs the Unidecode package your
system is using (you can tell that from the path to the Unidecode.pm
file shown in the error message). I'm not sure any of those packages
you installed would have changed that, but I'm no expert in Debian so
 could be wrong.

Yes, '/usr/share/perl5/Text/Unidecode.pm. comes from the
libtext-unidecode-perl which is pulled in by the slimserver package.

I wonder whether you changed the version on your system since
 installing SlimServer and that broke?

Yes, I did upgrade to the testing repository, so I've been running the
most recent snapshots of 6.5.1. The problem with LazySearch did not
disappear until I installed the packages above though.

Anyway - I don't think there's a general problem here, but if anyone
else sees it then shout as it may indicate a packaging problem for
 Debian.

 Stuart

Makes sense. It's documented here now and if in particular people
starts having problem with LazySearch I'm sure you'll here about them
:)

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Re: Lazysearch2 crashes slimserver

2006-11-13 Thread bhaagensen

Ok, apparently I did not have all propoer perl-modules installed. I know
next to nothing about this stuff, but on Ubuntu Edgy I installed the
following modules which seems to have solved the problem:

libunicode-japanese-perl - Perl module for convert japanese encodings
libunicode-map-perl - Perl module for mapping charsets from and to
UTF16 Unicode
libunicode-map8-perl - Perl module to map 8bit character sets to
Unicode
libunicode-maputf8-perl - Perl module for conversing between any
character sets and UTF8
libunicode-string-perl - Perl modules for Unicode strings

Perhaps it should be mentioned as a dependency in the documentation ?

Anyway I'm happy :)

Hm, perhaps it should be a dependency of slimserver itself then ? (I'm
using the debian packages). I have seen the error message popping up
from time to time, but it's only been fatal for Lazysearch.

 - and SlimServer itself uses unidecode internally. Did you use
 build-perl-modules.pl?
 Stuart

No, I don't know anything about that. If it's related to the
installation of slimserver itself, I guess it should have been taken
care of by the debian-packaging ?

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Lazysearch2 crashes slimserver

2006-10-08 Thread bhaagensen

Hi,

Thanks for a great plugin. I'm having some problems with it right now
though.

I did a complete delete and rescan of my music library. Upon rebuliding
the lazysearch index the slimserver always crashes on me. I'm fairly
sure it's due to lazysearch since removing it fixes the crash. I'm
running slimserver 6.5 on Ubuntu Edgy with perl 5.8.8 and the latest
LazySearch2 (2.2.2). Running slimserver -d_plugins -d_server -d_sql I
get the info below. I don't know where to start debuggin, or what
information I should provide, so let me know if there is anything I can
do.

Thanks, Bjørn
