Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AAC+ and file types

2009-02-20 Thread whitman

Very useful, thanks, bpa.

You say SC decides what to apply "depending on what rules are enabled".
Enabled where?

The three main types of stream coming into my SB3 are: Apple Lossless,
from my iTunes music; MP3, from various radio stations; and AAC+, also
from radio streams. As I understand it, MP3 is the only one that goes
'straight through' as a native format. Obviously I'd like to be hearing
the other two at best possible quality. Is there a way of ensuring that?
Or do I just trust SC to have my best interests at heart?

Oh, and while we're on the subject of AAC+, this blog...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/bbcinternet/2009/02/better_audio_for_bbc_radio_onl.html

...says that BBC radio iPlayer is "now using AACfamily streams for the
listen-again service" as of Feb 11th. Is that really true?

My only problem with Spotify - apart from the fact that some of my more
obscure-taste music is simply not available, which I suppose is to be
expected - is the quality issue. See my post 1936 in this thread -
basically, I don't think much of it, overall. Maybe you're right,
Jackofall, and we should direct a discussion about the quality of
Spotify streams, or the lack of it, to Spotify's own GetSatisfaction
forum, rather than speculate here to no particular end.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: JazzFM Plugin

2011-04-13 Thread whitman

I've been using the plugin for a while, and more or less exclusively to
listen to the Dinner Jazz show. Almost always, after a short time of
listening, a very short break in the audio will occur (maybe one
second), then a few minutes later another, and so on.

It makes it impossible to listen to.

Anything else I listen to on my SB3, including other net radio feeds,
is fine. This seems to be a problem with JazzFM only.

Any ideas?

Michael, thanks. So I was indeed missing something obvious! I'd been
hunting every which where in Spotty with the suspicion that there must
be something as useful as a shuffle setting somewhere. It didn't occur
to look "outside", as it were, in LMS. Now I know. I still yearn for a

That's surprising to me. I thought I had to add a repository if I wanted

This was from a while ago, when I first saw this thread about the Radio
firmware. I followed Michael's advice and did nothing, as nothing seemed
broken on my Radio.

Today, however, while looking for something else in LMS's web UI, I
noticed this message in Information...

<< You seem to be using a Radio with an outdated firmware, not
recognizing this version of Logitech Media Server. Please consider
patching it. >>

Should I, indeed, reconsider? Radio is working perfectly well, still.

I've always been somewhat baffled by the file type settings, so wanted
to be sure I have this right.

I set the Spotty file types as in post #9 here, in other words...

35243

So, playing Spotty on my SB3 or Radio or DAC32 and choosing info shows
"OGG VORBIS (SPOTIFY) (CONVERTED TO PCM)".

Is that correct? Is PCM better than FLAC?

Also, the few times I've played Spotty on any of those players, the
first seconds have stuttered somewhat, and then settled down, which it's
not done before I changed these settings. Doesn't seem like coincidence,
does it?

Ah, and ta too slarti, one of those "obvious when you say it" things.

Right, set to play FLAC only, and all three of my players, SB3, Radio,
and DAC32, playing now without stutters.

Info reads the same for each: "Ogg Vorbis (Spotify) (Converted to FLAC)
Bitrate 705kbps CBR".

So presumably that's as good as it gets, quality wise, with the reply

I’ve been wondering about giving Apple Music a whirl, and I planned to
use shairtunes to stream it via Airplay from my Mac laptop or my iPad to
my DAC32. (I have my Mac mini running LMS on the same network.)

But I’ve seen some debate online questioning if Airplay can deliver
Apple Music’s hi-res files, with a consensus suggesting that it can’t.

This has rather put me off, as it was the hi-res stuff at a relatively
good price that attracted me.

Has anyone here used such a setup successfully?

Seems like Apple are saying their lossless files are ALAC ranging from
44/16 to 48/24, so that lower 44/16 end would, at least in theory, be
better than the regular Spotify files I'm hearing at present.

But to repeat my question, is anyone actually using this, and if so what
do you hear? And is there a way to tell the spec (44/16 or whatever) of
the stream you're hearing?

Philippe, thanks, and apologies, I did realise you are the maintainer,
so I certainly wasn't disputing your info.

My enquiry is intended to see if there is some way to stream those
higher-res Apple Music files, somehow, from an Apple device to my DAC32.

It would be interesting, for example, to see if a 48/24 file really
makes that much difference to my ears.

But if the only way is via shairtunes, and that tops out at 44/16, so be
it.

Is there a way to omit cover art (or the cover art placeholder) in the
Expanded Now Playing view? What I want is just the track-info text,
bigger, ideally filling the space available.

OK, cpd. I guess "css" is some sort of coding, and so I assume it's not
going to happen if only one user wants it!

The end device is an iPad, I have access to the LMS install location,
though I'm not sure what you mean by the 'prefs/plugin' folder, and I
would be using the iPad in landscape mode.

Tfec, I've looked in all the obvious Squeezebox cache, prefs, and plugin
folders on my host Mac, and I can't see any Material Skin .css files. In
fact the only MS file I can see in those folders is one called
material-skin.prefs, which is a text file beginning "_ts_artistFirst:
1612439599 ... ".

Any more clues on this? Are the relevant MS files differently named in
MacOS, perhaps, or in some obscure place I haven't found, maybe?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Radio Now Playing plugin

2021-11-09 Thread whitman

Paul, a couple of stations that I listen to regularly on LMS do not show
album art (at least not on the links I use, which I believe are the best
quality available in each case).

First is Jazz24, which for my taste is one of the better jazz stations.
I have this link in my Favourites...

https://live.wostreaming.net/direct/ppm-jazz24aac256-ibc1

The other is Swiss Classic, again a good station in my view, and
accessed from this link in my Favourites...

http://www.radioswissclassic.ch/de/live/aacp.m3u

Is there any scope for getting art (and indeed album info) with some
help from you and your excellent Radio Now Playing?

Thanks.

In the meantime, thank you, as ever, Paul for your meticulous work. This
fine plugin just got better. And I dare say it will continue to do so.

Mother Earth indeed playing mp3 OK, and I see from the posts between
that there is a prob with the flac.

Juke Radio indeed stuck, I guess on the little known four-week John Cage

Ah, I hadn't seen that.

And yes, the info in that bottom-of-the-main-page slug is WELL ahead of
the actual change of audio, as you say.

I presume from you mentioning this that you have to derive info for your
purposes from the slug and not the Listen page—even though the Listen

Got the 15b beta, and yes, seeing album artwork.

I guess you know this, but the "next" track info arrives ahead of its
audio, and the artwork arrives a little after that.

Note that the Jazz 24 logo appears instead of an album cover when it's
one of the station's own sessions that's being played.

Good work, Paul—it's getting closer.

As I say, I thought the no-cover tracks were tracks from their own
sessions–they do play such things–but I think there are too many for
that to be the case, and looking also at the playlist, some of the
non-cover tracks are indeed listed as being from specific albums

I think a trade-off for no duration and close sync would be acceptable.

I am impressed that just about a week after I tentatively asked about

Just listening to Vincent Herring on Jazz24 and seeing some fine cover

Thanks again!

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Alternatives to spotify / spotty?

2022-02-04 Thread whitman

Jaca, that's interesting.

Now I see that I can indeed add folders to Spotify's Playlists!

In the official Spotify app on my desktop Mac, if I right-click on an
existing Playlist in the sidebar on the left, there's an option to
Create Folder, which I'd completely missed. It's easy from there to make
folders and sub-folders and organise stuff in a way that (for my
purposes, at least) is much more efficient. Good!

I can then see the new folders I've made in LMS in a browser UI on the
same desktop, rather more usefully in Material than the regular skin.
But neither seems to allow me to make new folders. And in iPeng on my
iPhone, again any new folders made on the Spotify app are now visible
but there's no obvious way (to me) to make new ones there.

Sorry if this is a touch off-topic here. Later, when/if the dust settles
on the Spotify debate, I'll maybe make a new thread about the folder
business.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] iPeng Playback + iPad + headphones

2022-02-16 Thread whitman

I'm thinking of getting some headphones to use for LMS, and I'm looking
into iPeng's Playback facility to do this. (This is the iPeng add-on
that effectively turns an iPhone or iPad into an LMS/Squeezebox
player.)

The iPad I'd use is a mini 4. I believe the out from iPeng through the
headphone jack on that would be good enough to make for a reasonably
high quality noise. Correct?

I'm considering the well-rated Grado SR80x cans, which have an impedance
of about 35 ohms. I'm assuming they're OK for the iPad to drive without
assistance as I have a cheap pair of about 32 ohms that seem OK through
that route.

Anyone using a similar setup with advice or comments?

(Wasn't sure exactly where to post this, but figured iPeng = software
probably closest.)

Thanks Paul and Jim for further advice.

Still thinking my way through, as for me this counts as a potentially
big investment, so I want to consider as many alternatives as poss.

So, I do have an M! MacBook Air (2020). I imagine using that would
eliminate the need for the camera adapter for the iPad. I have a spare
USB3–USB adaptor I could use on one of the laptop's Thunderbolt/USB4
jacks. Presumably a Dragonfly DAC would work connected to that?

I do have iPeng working on the laptop—it's an M1 version, and most
iOS/iPadOS apps work on it—so that side of it is covered.

Mind you, despite all that, I wonder how good the laptop's internal DAC
is, via the 3.5 headphone out?

Grebg, thanks for this, very good to hear of your experience.

Have you ever tried iPeng on MacOS? M1 Macs will run some iOS apps, and

Anyway, my iPhone SE (2016) seems OK on battery usage with iPeng, as

I can't see an obvious way to tell what actual quality (96/24 or
whatever) iPeng is shoving out the headphone jack at any point.

Good advice on trying the cans without a DAC for now, thanks, and I like
your suggestion of the 90 vs 10 balance. My new Grado SR80X arrived
yesterday, so I've been digging in. Much fun!

What DACs have you tried and liked? The miser in me would be interested

iPeng and Playback on MacOSstream problem

2022-02-27 Thread whitman

Anyone running iPeng on MacOS and using its Playback facility?

M1 Macs will run some iOS apps, like iPeng, and iPeng's Playback option
turns iPeng into an LMS player.

Certainly iPeng runs on my MacBook Air M1 and delivers Playback, but I
have a problem with it crashing when I try to play certain radio
streams.

I should add that I can play any and every one of these streams
perfectly well using iPeng with Playback on iOS devices, like my iPhone
or iPad. It’s only when I try Playback on the Mac that I hit the
problem.

I’ve tried to find common factors among the relevant streams, and
quality seems to be one.

All the 44.1 kHz streams play perfectly (for example Europa Jazz).

The 48 kHz streams do not play (for example D-Dur Classical), nor does a
96 kHz one (Mother Earth). They do not play and they crash iPeng.

The codec does not seem to be a factor—some OGG streams play (for
example Juke), some do not (for example CRo Jazz); some AAC streams play
(for example Jazz24), some do not (Classic Jazz Radio).

I’m connecting the laptop to LMS via wifi, so in iPeng Playback’s player
prefs I have bitrate limiting for wifi set to off. I can’t see any other
prefs that might affect the problem.

On the laptop, in Audio MIDI Setup I have my headphone output set to
96kHz 2ch 32-bit Float, which is the highest possible. I’ve tried it at
the other options, 44.1, 48, and 88.2, and that seems to make no
difference.

I have the sense that I’m missing something obvious. I really want to
use iPeng like this on my laptop with headphones for all my radio
streams, which I have collected as Favourites sourced from the excellent
Radio Now Playing app.

Any ideas?

Re: iPeng and Playback on MacOSstream problem

2022-02-27 Thread whitman

I'm looking in iPeng at Settings/Player Settings/Audio, but I can't see
a setting there for streaming method. All I have there is Crossfade,
Volume Adjustment, Fixed Volume, and Equalizer. Is that where you meant
to look?
