And you do enter the code of the PWS in the extra PWS setting?

Wouldn't know why it's not finding the correct weather for you, so far
noone else reported any issue with that.

Bluegaspode,
I would like to extend your weather screensaver hopefully by replacing

advice on how to approach it, as this is my first attempt at writing a

Feel free to look at the sources and change it to your liking.

You might look into the Flickr-Applet as well, as it is downloading

Working now on 7.5.

I decided to go out of Beta as well as I didn't change much (nor plan

You should see version 1.0 in the applet installer now (apart from the

SuperDateTime and my applet are two different types of applets.
The former you don't have to install in to the Radio.

So two questions:
1) when you enter my repository-URL on Squeezebox-Server and hit apply
... is the repository-URL still listed ?
2) When you go to the applet-installer of the radio - are other Applets
listed there ? (like 'Daylight Clock' or 'Album Flow *Beta*')
3) Did you restart your Radio (long press the power button)
4) Are you connected to your local server (instead of
mysqueezebox.com=

?

All seems OK now; the applet indeed now shows up in the installer menu
on the Radio. For some reason a power cycle last night didn't resolve a
number of settings issues I was having -- this being one, and radiotime
settings (set up on MySB) trickling down to SBS was another. These
issues seem to be SBS-related rather than anything specific to your
applet or MySB settings for Radiotime.

Thanks for your help!

Still not sure things are working quite right with the applet
installer. While your beta weather applet shows up, your headphone one
(in the same repository) does not. Not sure if the applet installer is
smart enough to know if it's not meant for the player in question (the
headphone one seems directed at the controller, not the Radio), but in
any case it does not show up as an installable applet. Specific answers
to your questions:

1) Yes
2) Only your weather one. Daylight clock is there but not 'Album Flow
*Beta*' nor your headphone applet
3) Yes, multiple times
4) I am connected to my local SBS, not MySB. Quite frankly, it is not
intuitive on how to switch back and forth, and also the firmware on MySB
is older and I don't want a forced downgrade, so I haven't tried to
navigate back to MySB.

Yes it is that 'intelligent'.
The headphone switcher - applet will only show up on
Squeezebox-Controllers.

Don't be worried by the missing Album Flow applet - I think this is a
beta-applet by erland where you need to configure his beta-repository.

So if the applet installer is showing the custom clock + the weather
screensaver on the Radio everything is allright !

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Beta: Weather-Screensafer for Controller/Radio/Touch

2010-01-02 Thread bluegaspode

This is very strange !
Mine is working again (without changes from my side).

I was inbetween analyzing the problem, all I could see in the logs was,
that my Controller tried to connect to mysqueezebox.com (without
success) all the time and that it looked like it didn't get any response
from wonderground.

As soon as the errors for mysqueezebox.com disappeared, the
weather-applet started to work again.

So I think that due to connection problems to MySB.com the controller
somehow lost its ability to connect to other sources (like wonderground)
?

I just don't know :(

I suggest to reboot your Controller/Radio/Touch first (long press on
the power button). Then try the Screensafer again.

If you still have problems post again and I'll explain how you can
retrieve log-files which will help analyzing the problem.

When I register your repository per your first post, your applet does
not appear in the list -- hence I cannot use the applet installer to
install it. I manually scp'd the files over and it worked fine -- but
I'm wondering why adding your repository didn't do anything. I had this
same problem much earlier with SuperDateTime not showing up either after
adding the repo to the repository (when the extension downloader just
came out), but that was so many releases ago I don't think they're
related.

I'm using a Radio with the latest 7.4.2 SBS.

Logitech currently puts all resources to their Touch release, ignoring

As not waking up at the right time makes me very angry, I'm not in any

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Beta: Weather-Screensafer for Controller/Radio/Touch

2009-12-05 Thread bluegaspode

After a software update all applets get uninstalled.

In the Applet Screen just hit the install button again (even though it
might look like it is installed).
Your Controller or Radio should Reboot then and you should find
everything as before.

The applet installer is a bit confusing. In the screen where you see
the applet-name and version, you just select/deselect what you want to
install/uninstall.
Are you sure you went one menu up and clicked the 'install x/y'-button.
?

There should be a short 'please wait' screen and the controller needs
to reboot.

copied from the wiki
(http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/SqueezePlay_Applets#Applet_Installer)

Please note the subtle differences of this menu in 7.3 and 7.4
 firmwares:
7.3: selecting 'Install' will immediatly download and install the
 applet
7.4: selecting 'Install' is just a preselection. You are thus able to
select more than one applet at once.
After selection go one menu up, where you have the 'real' install
button which will show the count of selected applets.

Bradley;480694 Wrote:
Use one graphic for each non-current day (you can update the non-current

But thats not possible with the current data-feed (the only free one
that I'm allowed to use is wunderground).
I get a feed for the current condition with one icon + temp.
I get a forecast feed (including the current day and the next two) with
high/low-temp + TWO icons.
As I don't know which of these two icons is better ('icon' or
'skyicon'), I just render them both.
So as much as I'd like to just show one icon, from my point I'm just
not able to do so ?

Also 'merging' the forecast of the current day (high/low-temp) with the
big-icon would result in a loss of information. Where should I put the
(two) icons of the current-day forecast?
Just omitting both icons wouldn't be good as well I really want to know
how the current day will develop ?

So actually I'm quite happy with the distribution:
*BIG*: current situation - Big Icon + Temp + Humidity + Date + Time
*3x SMALL*: forecast (current day, day + 1, day +2) with high/low temp
and two possible icons.

With your suggestions I could change it to:
*BIG*: current situation + forecast: Current Temp, Forecast Low/High
Temp, Forecast Icons (two toggling), current date, current time.
Icon of current Condition would be omitted.
*3x SMALL*: forcast (day+1, day+2, day+3) with high/low temp and two
possible icons (toggling).

What do others think ?
Should we merge the forecast of the current day into the 'big' area ?

Hello,

Just stumbled into this nice applet and installed it onto my controller
- no sweat.
I have one question and on item for the wish list

Question : what about the weather plugin settings under Squeezebox
Server/Plugins. For example third line ( precipitation chance, wind info
) does not change anything on the controller weather display.

Wishlist : location name to be displayed with forecast, just to make
sure it is correctly fetched.

Thanks for the good work on plugin(s) - that's what makes the Squeeze
family so interesting.

This must be from another plugin, I don't have any configuration on the

I think the main screen is crowded enough already. But I might put an

This will then print all available info of the weather-station

Thanks for the suggestion.

Yes you are right - it cannot make up its mind - its a forecast and it
shows you the possibilities of the given day day.
The whole thing was discussed before (see the discussion started here:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=465050) I'd really like
to do it better if you have an idea feel free to tell me !

Why is the main icon one thing e.g., Cloudy, while the side icon for the

The main icon is the current condition.
All small icons are forecast.
Thats why they can also contradict each other ... its not unusual to
have sun and later rain ?

I'll update the explanation in the first page.

Again, nice graphics, but generally useless to the layman (family

Now as I I hope you understood the meaning of the various parts, I'd be
grateful if you could give some hints on how I could improve the applet
!

Anyway - I hope to get some time over the next two weekends to finish

There are two things remaining:
- trying to use the last remaining pixels to get some bigger fonts
- I think the screensaver currently prevents controller suspend, but
I'm not sure

After that I'll remove the beta status und put it to the wiki-page.

The Other third party plugins list will only be available after the

 3. So far I've been looking at your applet with the SB Radio and the SB

much because the size is determined by the width, but what if the string
wasn't wide. For example, what if it were 10:43PM (or better yet, 10:43p
or simply 22:43 instead of something long like the 05 Oct, 2009 in your
images? In other words, if there is more width available will it use
 bigger fonts?

The font is adjusted to the available space.
I calculate the size of the font and based on the longest string that
could show I scale it up as much as possible.
So if there is more vertical space and the longest text is shorter,
then the font would be bigger automatically.
Currently I take the date-string as the longest string regardles of
whether its activated or not.

I'll play around a bit (as my wife is sometimes mumbling about the
font-size too ;) - which makes at least to votes to look into it again)
to see If there is some room for bigger fonts. On all devices the font
would be bigger if one takes a shorter date-string (or disables it and
my code would respect this)

Thanks for the explanation. And I'm glad that you used the same icons
for partlycloudy/mostlysunny, because they seem pretty much synonomous
to me! My personal preference would be for less toggling, for the same
reason I am not fond of websites with a lot of unnecessary animation.
But that's just my preference. I suppose one could fine tune it somewhat
and continue the toggling for chance of rain/snow/etc but not for
'chance of partlycloudy'. How many different possibilities are there for
wunderground's predicted weather conditions?

If you could change the code to respect the longest possible string

chooses time instead of date the font would be adjusted based on a
longest string of something like 10:59pm or 22:59, instead of a longest

the text is too small opinion! You say that the font isn't enlarged
much because the size is determined by the width, but what if the string
wasn't wide. For example, what if it were 10:43PM (or better yet, 10:43p
or simply 22:43 instead of something long like the 05 Oct, 2009 in your
images? In other words, if there is more width available will it use
bigger fonts? Frankly I think the smaller icons/larger text you posted
looks better than the proportions you have now. And it would probably
look better still if you could get the time font to be larger, because
it can use more width than it is now. I'll try to take a look at it on
the SB Touch and report back.

4. I see your point about de-activating the screensaver whenever a
button or wheel is touched. I thought it was a longshot, but at least
worth a mention.

Finally, there's no need to feel bad about not taking my suggestions.
This is your software, and I expect that if you tried to implement every
suggestion from every user you would end up going insane.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Beta: Weather-Screensafer for Controller/Radio/Touch

2009-10-05 Thread bluegaspode

aubuti, as I'm new to the 'weather-business' ;-) thanks for your very
valued feedback.

aubuti;466772 Wrote:
I'm surprised to hear you say that the chance of precipitation is not
available in the data feed, because the WeatherDateTime (WDT) plugin for
the players with VFD screens has that info, and it also gets its feed

Hhmm - I checked their sourcecode and they use the 'pop'-field (guess
this means' percentage of precipitation') of the forecast, which was
always empty for me :(

See:
http://api.wunderground.com/auto/wui/geo/ForecastXML/index.xml?query=TXL

if I take some city in the US I get some values indeed
http://api.wunderground.com/auto/wui/geo/ForecastXML/index.xml?query=JFK

This is not fair !

As for other animations, what does a sun with clouds flashing on/off
mean? For example, for tomorrow I'm seeing Clear with just a sun icon
on the wunderground.com site, but for the same location your applet is
showing a sun with clouds flashing on and off. Is that chance of
clouds? The following day is predicted partly cloudy, and the icons on
the web site and your applet are a static sun with clouds, which is what
 I would expect.

In the forecast-XML I get two icons, one called 'icon' and one called
'skyicon'. The icon-field includes the 'chance of'-icons (which are
shown with a question-mark on wunderground.com) but there is only chance
of flurries, rain, snow, sleet and thunderstorms.

So nothing sensible that matches your observation.

If there is such a strange situation again you could help me by doing
one of the following things (whichever is easier for you):
a) go to wunderground-link posted above (but use your location in the
end) and look at the 'icon' and 'skyicon' for the corresponding day.
b) look in the /var/log/messages file on your controller. you will find
infos from the applet there starting with parseForecast - and the
icon-names as well.

Maybe I have some mismatched icons or wunderground is sending strange
data, which we maybe could filter.

To my eye, the main weather icon takes up too much space relative to
the text. In my opinion the icon could be shrunk and either make the
text bigger or add a provision for a third line of data.

On what device are you looking (controller/touch/radio) ?
Unfortunately it's very difficult to provide a good solution for all
three devices (and even the desktop-version with arbitary resolution).

Currently I cut the screen in 2/3 (current condition area) and 1/3
(forecast area). The forecast-area is divided into 3 areas of course.
Then we have 4 areas which are again cut in 2/3 (icon) and 1/3 (text).

As a small (exaggerated) test I cut the icon/text areas in half (see
attached images). You see that this doesn't help much, as the fonts
size/height is determined by its width. Scaling the fonts height would
make look it ugly.
I third line

These screen sizes are really hard to handle :(

Secondly, what about using the whole screen for current conditions, and
making subsequent days available via a button or wheel?
I though about this too. But the nature of a screensafer (currently)
makes this impossible. Whatever button you press (or if you scroll the
wheel) - screensafer is turned off.
I might try to find ways to circumvent this in future releases, but as
my vacation is now over, I won't find much time for such advanced
hacks.

Now I feel bad because I argued against any of your points.

Thanks for the prompt responses to those suggestions. It's great having
the time-of-day and the C/F options.

I'm surprised to hear you say that the chance of precipitation is not
available in the data feed, because the WeatherDateTime (WDT) plugin for
the players with VFD screens has that info, and it also gets its feed

a provision for a third line of data. Secondly, what about using the
whole screen for current conditions, and making subsequent days

WDT approach, although I expect it would be harder to implement with the
LCD devices because the UIs are different across players (SBC wheel
buttons vs. SB Radio knob(s) vs. SB Touch's IR remote and touchscreen).
But maybe there's some way to do it.

I'm sure that some of my comments come from being a happy user of WDT
(and sometimes SuperDateTime) for a few years, so I'd like to see some
of the same functionality on the players with LCD screens. But I also
understand that you don't necessarily just want to port WDT to the newer
players, you want to have your own creation, and I certainly can't argue
with that. Anyway, thanks again for an excellent applet.

I always thought this would be important information when weather data
gets outdated - maybe I just do a check that weather data is not shown

Also an option for displaying temp in Fahrenheit would be nice for

Yes, that's where I would suggest putting it. To me it's not that
important to know how old the current conditions are. On our SB2 and
SB3 we use WeatherDateTime which does a nice combination of time and
weather (and like SuperDateTime, is extremely customizable). It would be
great if we could have something similar for our SB Radio. If you could
make it an option that would be ideal.

Maybe some form of animation (slideshow between two different

Given that you are not living on the northpole (forecast: always snow

this still an issue with LCD-displays nowadays) ?

Some updates:

- font is resized to fit better on the available space.
The font thus will be a bit bigger for better visibility.
Also the font should now show correctly on Squeezebox Radio.
- started to parse the actual weather-string (instead just the
icon-names, that come from wunderground) for the current weather -
this makes it possible to have more exact icons, for instance 3 levels
of rain (ligth/normal/heavy) instead just one - see example icons
  below.
- localization for english+german. If you speak any other language
please look at the attached 'strings.txt'-file, extend it and post it

Very nice screensaver. I find the animation of the icons on the right a
little annoying, but no big deal. Here's a real simple question/request:
would it be possible to add an option to put the time of day on the

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Beta: Weather-Screensafer for Controller/Radio/Touch

2009-09-28 Thread bluegaspode

This message is really strange!
Anyone else with a Touch having the same problem ?

I just looked in the sourcecode of the AppletManager ... one line
before the error it should try to load 'applets/Weather/WeatherMeta.lua'
- this doesn't seem to work for some reason (the file exists ?) thats
why the 'class' variable gets a boolean value (see reference manual for
'require': http://www.lua.org/manual/5.1/manual.html#pdf-require).

The AppletManager expects the loaded WeatherMeta-class (instead of
true) so cancels with an error :(

So this leaves the two questions:
- did you delete your wrong 'WeatherApplet' directory ?
- does the applets/Weather/WeatherMeta.lua file exist ?

Applet Installer is working now (see edited first post) so you might
also try to delete all folders starting with 'Weather' and try the
applet installer.

Working via applet installer - thanks.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Beta: Weather-Screensafer for Controller/Radio/Touch

2009-09-27 Thread bluegaspode

I happy to announce the start of beta-testing my new
Weather-Screensafer:

FEATURES

- will show current weather
- will show forecast for next 3 days
- weather-data taken from www.wunderground.com
- written portable to support 7.3 + 7.4 firmware-version
- works for controller/touch/radio (tested with controller and
  squeezeplay)

INSTALL
It seems that the applet-installer has a timeout, which currently makes
it impossible to install this 1MB applet via a repository :(

In the meantime just 'download'
(www.stagessound.de/squeeze/Weather.zip) and 'install it manually'

(you might als try the repository but currently this doesn't work for
me :(
www.stagessound.de/bluegaspode.xml)

CONFIGURE

- Go to 'Settings-Screen-Screensaver'
- Here you will have to configure the location to show weather-data
  from ('Screensavers-Weather settings').
This location will be passed to www.wunderground.com, so you might
want to test there, whether your location will be recognized.
The default is 'Berlin, Germany' so you always know how my mood is
  ...
- Also in the screensafers-menu you will have to configure the
weather-screensafer (most probably under 'when stopped').
You can also preview the weather here by pressing 'Play' when the
  weather-screensaver is selected
- The Weather-applet will also install itself under the
'Extras'-menu, so you can start it whenever you want. (With 7.4
firmware, you might have to activate the extras-menu under
  'settings-home menu')

OPEN TODOS

- localization
- consistent indents and comments in source-code :)
- maybe showing some night-images when its night

Pretty cool. About the night-pictures. Yes, that would be really nice. I
noticed that the wunderground-page does indeed have night pictures.

One more thing. Might be worth mentioning that is must be installed in a
folder named 'Weather' (under /usr/share/jive/applets). I tried using
WeatherApplet first, and it didn't work.

Hmm, that's what I did, but I can't see the applet on my Touch.
