Searching for iPeng in the iTunes store only produces 2.0.17 per the
screenshot below. How can i download 2.0.16?

I'm a bit confused.
If you did run 2.0.10 this means you should have iOS 4.2.1 on your iPod
and with that iOS Version you should still be able to download iPeng
directly from the App Store. You'd get version 2.0.16 which is the
latest one supporting iOS 4

The restore probably doesn't work because you probably updated iPeng to
version 2.0.17 on another device and did. Backup of that, too. Unless
you manually keep a separate backup iTunes only keeps backups of the
latest version of an App so you can't install that one on the iTouch
using iTunes.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Gen2 Ipod Touch as Squeezebox player

2014-06-30 Thread frozzers

Hi Pippin

I installed iPeng 2.0.10 on my 2nd gen iPod Touch (4.2.1) in February
2013 but had to do a factory restore recently.

I'm trying to reinstall iPeng (now 2.0.17) but I get the message: 'The
app "iPeng" was not installed on the iPod because it requires a newer
version of iPod software.' This was the message I used to get before you
released iPeng 2.0.10.

I've tried restoring an old iPod Touch backup from February 2013 but I
get the message: '"iPeng" was not installed on the iPod because it
requires a newer version of iPod software.'

Any ideas what I can do?

Cheers

Chris

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Gen2 Ipod Touch as Squeezebox player

2013-02-25 Thread pippin

OK, technically what I was trying to do worked fine so I've got a
working ARMv6 version (for 2nd generation devices) of iPeng 2.0.x here.
It's not as beautiful as iPeng 2.0 on iOS 5 and 6 since the redesign
doesn't really work with iOS 4 so all the custom buttons, bars etc.
revert to normal, dark blue or black ones but it works.

Now let's hope that I get it through Apple's review-process.

I wasn't suggesting that we break the licensing, only get a copy of an
older version of the app. Definitely buy the iPeng app.
I just found a tool called iTools that lets you manage your apps
without iTunes. I will plug my Ipod in and check it out when I get home
from work today.

Well, I'm not sure it will work. I'm sure there are ways to crack the
copy protection and install it on a jail broken device but at least in
some countries you might break a few laws on the way.
Also, I'm not 100% sure the in-app-purchase for the playback would work
that way.

License wise it would not be a big problem, if you want to do the right
thing you could just buy the App through iTunes, this would technically
make you eligible to run the App on several actual devices.

Hi Steve, thanks for your help. I have very limited knowledge in this
area, if you could extract it would it be possible to install? Are there
license restrictions on doing something like this, if there are maybe it
could be compensated by making a donation to the developer?
I'm keen to give it a go from a technical point if view just want to
make sure it's all above board.

I totally understand that support can't continue indefinitely on
outdated products but it's still a shame that they've made it impossible
to get the old apps that were compatible.
Thanks for your consideration Pippin. I hope your idea works, if so
I'll be buying Ipeng to bring some new life to the old touch.
Thanks for your suggestion Berndt, I'll have a look into the old
IPhones.

Get a used iPhone 3gs 8gb. They are almost for free.

You can use it without a sim card except then you active the phone the
first time. After activation just remove the card, turn on Flight mode
and then turn on WiFi.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Gen2 Ipod Touch as Squeezebox player

2013-02-19 Thread pippin

There is currently none.

The problem is that with Apple's current developer toolkit it's no
longer possible to build Apps for 1st and 2nd generation devices (the
processor platform is no longer supported) and you have to use that
toolkit (the current generation) to submit Apps to the App Store so it's
very hard to still support old devices with Apps that are still seeing
updates.

Apple pretty much bricked these old generations this way, somewhat
annoying.

There might be a way around it, hearing it's even possible to get that
to the App Store and I might give it a try with the next iPeng release.
Has the drawback that what users of devices with iOS 4.3 (or new devices
with old iOS versions) get might be really ugly but it's probably a
limited number of them out there and they will have the option to
upgrade the OS.

Can't promise something, yet, but it might be that the next version of
iPeng will work on iOS 4.2.1 again.
