Vitor,

I did understand you correctly.
That's what I was referring to. Do you have an "play all" menu item in
that menu (I don't, but as I said: that may be due to me using 7.6).
I'll have to try this with 7.5...

What I'm trying to find out is whether there is an "play all" item that
iPeng removes (it does so for some menus but it should never do that
for a menu without an own play all item) or whether TrackStat is
missing the menu item.
In any case there is NO play item for the whole menu (i.e. the level
above) which would be needed for iPeng to add it's own menu.
I think at least the latter needs to be fixed in the plugin.

OK, I checked the menu TrackStat sends and there IS NO "Play All" item.
Plus, there is no "Play" item on the whole menu so there simply is no
way how iPeng could play this whole list.

Maybe it's a change in TrackStat? I know Erland had to make a lot of
changes to his plugins to keep up with the changes in SBS.

I have "DynamicPlaylists" installed and that adds a first item to this
list which you can use to play the whole list, maybe that's a
workaround. Apart from that a fix for the plugin is needed.

No :)
Theoretically it could work with the internal library because there
iPeng knows what it's doing but even there this would be 20 commands to
the server. Would probably take a minute or so and no idea what the
outcome would be.

For TrackStat, it's completely impossible. The way the menus work,
iPeng doesn't know what's in there. Take Rhapsody (which is a similar
menu), Rhapsody has a dozen menu items or so beyond the simple tracks.
Or the "Songs" menu, that doesn't contain any tracks at all.
iPeng depends on the plugin to tell it what to do with the content and
what it is (in this case: that it's a playlist). And if the plugin
says: This is not a playlist and you can only play single tracks, iPeng
can't play the whole list. It's as simple as that. And it's what's
happening here.

HM. Two restarts (one of them including installing another unrelated
plugin) and it shows up (installed) again.

Strange, but I've been seeing this with other plugins in 7.6, too:
Installed plugins simply don't show up (in none of the lists) and are
not running.

Plus I'm sure it wasn't running: this was how I noticed it since I
could not change the screen saver on my Radio anymore.

But now I'm seeing that old "TrackStat doesn't respond over CLI" issue

OK, found the CC issue.
The problem was not with the plugin but with the Baby. I had connected
it to the new server remotely and never noticed that it did not have
the correct username/password set. It never asked. Playback worked fine
(I believe SlimProto doesn't use it). UI LOOKED to work fine but really
didn't.

This authentication handling in SP really needs fixing, I filed that
bug like a year ago...

Nor for more server restarts until TS comes back...

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPeng support thread

2010-05-02 Thread pippin

Could it be that the server is still rescaling artwork? It has to do
that anew whenever you do a "Clear and Rescan" of the database. On slow
servers (without FPU) it helps a lot to set
"Settings->Advanced->Performance->Artwork Resampling" to "Resize
(faster, lower quality)".

Also, make sure iPeng has finished syncing the cache which can also
take a while on slower servers and big databases, have an eye on the
blue progress bar on "Albums". Make sure the iPhone doesn't go to sleep
before that's finished or enable (in iPeng) Settings->iPeng
Settings->Preserve Connection".

If all of this doesn't help you are right, then your server is probably
on the slow side, what are you using? In any case iPeng should be faster
than the Web Interface.

I'd recommend a Nettop type of device (Atom, min. 512MB RAM), e.g. a
Vortexbox.

Search IS slow in iPeng due to the incremental Search it does, will
probably remove that in the next release.
Pandora should not be slower, though.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPeng support thread

2010-05-03 Thread pippin

There's an album artwork id, that's what iPeng is using. iPeng is NOT
using the individual track artwork for thumbnails, only for
NowPlaying.
Using individual track artwork would put prohibitive load on
communication, cache size on the phone but especially for rescaling
requirements on slow servers, even the scheme used now can keep a
ReadyNAS or similar busy for half an hour or so after a "clear and
rescan", requesting up to 10 times as many thumbs is not an option.

Plus a lot of the caching in iPeng would not work any longer.
Please try a more recent version of the server, 7.4.1 has been quite
buggy.

well, if you also switch iPeng to MySb, you can use it to turn off the
player then.
If you want this to be automatic, I believe you need to configure a
screen saver for the "stopped" state, too. Or it might work to turn off
the SB3 before switching the server off.

Now this is REALLY confusing.
iPeng just shows what the server sends it so you have to look at the
server side.
What did confuse me first is that you said Controller shows it
correctly, iPeng should show the same as the Controller.
Now you say Squeezeplay shows the same thing as iPeng... the Controller
IS Squeezeplay, too! It's the same software.

My guess: do you have different sorting set on the Controller (probably
sort by Artist)? Can you set Album sort Order on the Controller at all?
iPeng sorts Albums by Album name in the "Albums" list and by "Artist,
Year, Album" in Artists->All Albums.
Could you check whether the latter is correct?

Which OS do you run the server and Squeezeplay on? Maybe it's an
encoding issue again.

I can't tell, yet. The current plan is like this:
- the next or one of the next iPeng releases will be a native iPad app,
that is it will work with full resolution on iPad. However, it will more
or less use the same UI that iPeng uses now. This one will be a free
upgrade
- there will be a dedicated iPad app with a very different UI that is
more geared towards the big screen on the iPad (we've done some
preliminary concepts and believe that requirements for a small remote
and a big screen are not the same). This will be a new app and will NOT
be a free upgrade.

None of this is guaranteed as of yet but it 's the current plan.

I can at least answer on the question of where that folder is:
Open the Web Interface (of Squeezebox Server) and go to
Settings->General (that's where you end up if you click "Settings").
Here's an item called "Playlist Folder", that's what you are looking
for. If there's nothing in there then that's the problem, you might try
to add the same folder you use as the "Music Folder" or a subfolder of
it.

Write permissions are something you can set from the Discstation's web
interface, IIRC, but it's been a long time so I'm not 100% sure about
that.

Yes, the server has to rescan that playlist which can take a few

You can do this in Settings->iPeng Settings
It's the "-" sign before the source.
If it's not a manually added source (which are the ones being shown

If it shows up in iPeng and you did NOT manually configure it this
means it answers the server discovery. This means you are very likely
running a Squeezebox Server, SqueezeCenter, or SlimServer instance on
that NAS.

No, iPeng never used the test server, you always had to add that
manually, did you probably do that (in settings->iPeng settings)?

I guess the problem might be that your iPhone or iPod may be bound to
the wrong account. MySB remembers the device and automatically connects
it.
Unfortunately you can't change that yourself, Logitech "forgot" to
migrate that feature from SN to MySB. I have to change that for you.
Please mail me at coolio att penguinlovesmusic dott com
I will also need the device ID (UDID) of your iPod or iPhone, the
easiest way to get that is through the (free) "UDID helper" app from
the App Store (or a similar one, there are several).

No, it should only read the first 200 items in albums and 300 in
artists and genres. It needs some information to verify that the
database hasn't changed.

It does run (except for setting Alarms in the current release) and you
don't have to re-purchase it since you can install it on up to 5
devices with the same iTunes account.

Actually that will be hard.
This is not a menu built by iPeng but by the server and it's simply the
way it is.
If this came in as a playlist, iPeng could handle this itself (as it
does for Napster, Rhapsody etc. playlists) but not the way it is now.
Also, the "Play All" item doesn't seem to have a context menu which
would be the other option to make this work.

Please file a ticket anyway, and I'll see what I can do:

I can't really answer on the albums other than that's not iPeng sorting
the albums but it requests them sorted from the server. The criterion
should be albums in this case, could you check with some Squeezeplay
device?

On the "Play/Add all": yes, that's what it's supposed to be. Play all
replaces the current playlist and is shown in play mode (>) while add
all will add the whole album to the playlist depending on the mode it
will do so at the end (+) or after thecurrent track (>|).

You don't need Tuner for that, you can open stream.mp3 in Safari.
The good thing is, once the stream is started in QuickTime, you can
keep it running in the background so you can ten control the stream

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPeng support thread

2010-06-15 Thread pippin

1. Your Qnap is probably still rescaling artwork for iPeng. It needs to
do this because iPeng uses different thumbnail sizes than the
Controller. And iPeng does ask the server to create up to 450 of them
in a bulk when originally started.
Now not having a floating point processor the Qnap can be pretty
challenged with this task.
It will eventually go away if you don't do "Clear and Rescan" of the
database too often (this clears not only the cache in iPeng but also
the one on the server side).
You could also set (on the server side)
"Settings->Advanced->Performance->Arwork resampling" to "resize
(faster, lower quality)".
2. This usually happens whenever the WiFi is not up and running when
iPeng starts. It will find the players after a while but usually it
should be enough to just re-start iPeng.

I can't really believe that because this thread alone will contain the
answer at least several times, e.g. here, it's one of the more common
questions WRT iPeng:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=465774

After all, the ReadyNAS is not the fastest server around, it's
especially bad if it has to re-sample artwork without a floating point
processor.

You either have to wait until the artwork resampling is done or you
have to change that setting mentioned in the post.

Please also make sure the communication with the server can go on if
it's that slow, e.g. by disabling screen savers or by switching
"preserver connection" on.

That said: since in your case it doesn't even load _any_ artwork it
could as well be something else is slowing your server down, do you
have a very long current playlist?

BTW: iPeng is NOT expected to know the content of "various artists" in
advance, it still gets this from the server. What becomes cached by
iPeng is only the artist, albums and genres main lists and artwork is
being cached. To predit the lower level menus iPeng would need
information from the underlying database it doesn't have.

Http streams don't help, Squeezeboxes don't use a standard protocol and
you need low level access anyway if you want full control over the
stream, especially syncing etc.
Fast app switching does (helps with playback as long as that's not
ready in iPeng ;) ).
I'm preparing an intermediate release that features it plus a lot of
other detailed improvements I made over the last 6 months.

I've tried that and it's simply too bad. You want more changes for

But I did decide to do I first iPad release before I continue work on
playback, after all, with iOS' multitasking there's a workable
workaround for the latter.

Actually I have no idea what the SB3 does (the IR remote does nothing),
but here's what iPeng does:

iPeng sends a WOL broadcast message on port 3483. While this is NOT the
most common port to use it needs to be open for server discovery anyway
so it's usually a good choice.
Your router needs to allow broadcasts on that port and it needs to
distribute them across the network. This usually is an issue if you
have a combined WiFi and ethernet network and you use a different
subnet range for the two, e.g. if WiFi is on 192.168.0.x and ethernet
on 192.168.1.x while the respective subnet masks are set to
255.255.255.0. While the router can route directed traffic in this
setup broadcasts will not get through.

This is as designed. I'm considering to change it for the iOS4 update
but I'm not 100% sure what the right logic is. I could attach it to a
music source but iPeng doesn't show music sources that are not
available unless you configure them manually (because you can use an
iPhone in different environments).
I could tie it to the last active source but then you could not use WOL
if you switched sources in between.

@vagskal: yes, it looks like Apple changes the table view refresh
behavior again :( Was problematic in 2.x, got fixed in 3.x and now it's
troublesome again.

But that's exactly the case in which it won't work at all: you're on
MySB and the server has to be running to switch back. Maybe I make
servers that have WOL enabled always show up and it's being sent if you

It usually helps to exit iPeng again and restart.
But please make sure you have not permanently disabled WiFi.
Also, you could check on the MultiPlayer screen (swipe right on

Not really. It will be something in the communication between the server
and iPeng. Possible candidates:
- Virus Scanner
- Illegal character (NOT foreign character, these work) in one of the
album tags.
- Wrong xxxsort tag
- Communication timeout due to the iPod going to sleep

Probably there are more possible causes.

Could it be that your "rescan" issue was due to the scan not being
completely finished when iPeng synced it's cache?

If iPeng doesn't show it it means it's not being delivered by the server
and the communication is somehow broken.
Or iPeng interprets anything wrongly there. Would be interesting to
know which one if the first item to not show.

Artists->various Artists uses a different sorting. iPeng can process
many more albums than that.
What do you see under artists->all albums and if you change the sorting
in the iPeng settings?

I don't think it's guaranteed to stay that way.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] CustomBrowser and TouchToPlay ?

Actually that's pretty much what Triode uses it for.

iPeng will only deliver the parameter if it's provided in the command
parameters in the menu. So if an action contains a parameter
"useContextMenu=>1" iPeng will hand this back to the server, if it
doesn't, iPeng will not add it.

Yes there is. CB as it is is a resource hog. It would be cool if it
would run e.g. on a Touch or perform better on low-powered devices
(although it also seems to get better with 7.6).

I don't think this is what this option does. I mean: it's purely a
Squeezeplay parameter used in menu mode queries. I have no idea what it
does but context menus DO work without it, iPeng uses the context
menus.

Actually that's the current behavior, I believe, from the menu side.
As it is now, most menus provided by the server itself contain the
parameter in the actions/params, so e.g. iPeng will send it as well.
IN ADDITION to this, current SP devices ALWAYS add this parameter even
if it's NOT in the menu definition. This is what's different in iPeng
and what Triode uses to distinguish between iPeng and SP. iPeng does
not do this since I have no idea what it does and I didn't find cases
in which I would have needed it since SP sends the parameter anyway.

They can set it in the menu (as it would be supposed to be if you look
at the documentation). Plus: context menus seem to work without it ...

Ah. So it makes sense for iPeng not to send it as iPEng decides on it's
own on when to send "play" and otherwise will drill down the menu tree.

I don't use menu mode queries for local library items, though, so I
think it doesn't apply a lot to iPeng.

"Apps" do. Haven't looked at other menus. iPeng only uses menu mode for
Apps, Internet Radio and Plugins, that's why I probably didn't see the
difference on the library menus.

As soon as you start from a context menu I believe it stays set, too.

Well, it still doesn't work satisfactorily. And right now the priority

Then it'll be up to how fast I get the issues with it resolved whether

I*'d guess it has to do with the way the Slacker App in MySB works and
might be a MySB issue. Have you tried the same using Web
Interface/Squeezeplay/Player UIs?

Well, all Squeezeboxes except for the Receiver have their own user
interface. The Classic has a display and an IR remote, the Boom has
buttons and a display, the Touch has a touch screen and so on.

On the Radio, the Touch and the Controller this user interface is
"SqueezePlay" and should behave like iPeng WRT menu commands. The older
players (Classic, Boom) have a different user interface that is run
through different code on the server and then there is the web
interface which - again - has it's own code.

If iPeng behaves different than SqueezePlay then it's probably iPeng
related. If iPeng and SqueezePlay behave different than the other
interfaces then it probably has something to do with that user
interface code on the server side and if all interfaces behave the same
way it's probably in the code interfacing between MySB and Slacker.

What do you mean by "doesn't work"?
The only thing that doesn't work with iOS4 is setting Alarms.
There are other things that can go wrong but no cases of outright
"doesn't work".

I've got an update in the making but there are plenty of changes to be
made to be compatible with the multitasking plus this needs testing.
iPeng is a pretty complex App with much, much more functionality then
the usual iPhone app has and I'm not putting it on the App Store
without having some confidence that the changes will work.

No, I have a totally different code base by now. I can't fix the alarms
without that, the alarms issue is due to a change in Apple's API
introduced in 3.2 and I need an iPeng code base compatible with that.
It's not a bug I can just fix, it's a change. I need different code for
3.0 (which still needs support since some devices can't upgrade to iOS4)
and 3.2+.
Also, the other bugs, albeit not being as reproducible and not blocking
any functionality are severe as well, you can't use d'n'd for syncing
and re-ordering tracks will make you lose lines in the table.
Again, these are issues due to design changes in Apple's API,
especially the d'n'd issue for syncing players meant I had to re-write
large parts of that controller.
All of this needs testing. The development itself is done.

If I try to get this on the App Store too quickly it will also not
speed up things, if Apple finds bugs they will reject it and I'll have
to re-iterate. Been there, done, that, I will not submit un-tested
code.

That's interesting. I've got a long list of those, some block busters
between them. iOS4 is out for 3 weeks now and that's the time since
when you can do serious testing with non-developers.

I did know about the iPad issue but I did believe it's iPad specific, I
only became aware it's also an issue with iOS4 when that became publicly
available.

Your long list of updated apps is fine. I can update iPeng, too. You
will the exchange two or three bugs for a few dozen new ones. Does that
help you?

Most of the apps you list don't do a lot of very complex things (games
aside, don't know anything about games) but I can assure you that my

iPad is not based on a LATER OS but on a DIFFERENT OS adding to
complexity. Before iOS4 anything you did for iPad did explicitly NOT
run on iPhone so you had to have different code for that. With iOS4
it's the other way around, iOS4 specific code doesn't run on iPad. Both
iOS4 code and iPad code doesn't run on 1st gen iPhone and iPod touch
devices.

Prio 2 is to also get it fully compatible with SBS 7.6
Prio 3 is to get the iPad version ready.
Currently I only work on 1.

This is not about having a life, this is about releasing a fully tested

upcoming iPeng for iOS4 release (1.2.5).

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Spotify Premium Plugin (Beta)

2010-07-20 Thread pippin

Is there a chance you could route the player status artwork (for
NowPlaying) also through the plugin like for the smaller icons?

The reason I'm asking is because the way it is now, the artwork URLs
are only accessible within your local network, if you access a server
remotely you don't have artwork anymore.
OK, maybe a bit of a remote (sic) use case but there were people using
their iPhone over cellular to control a Squeezebox from the garden...

What you describe is probably not an iPeng issue since I see the exact
same thing when using my Controller so you should probably file a bug
at bugs.slimdevices.com

However, I also can't reproduce this in iPeng since in iPeng I somehow
seem to be unable to save a favorite AT ALL? iPeng as well as the
controller SAY that the favorite was saved but it doesn't happen. I
will look into this.

Your Netgear router still acts as a router and blocks UDP broadcasts,
I'd say.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPeng support thread

2010-07-25 Thread pippin

The issue is that finding the server automatically requires UDP
broadcast to work. The way that broadcast works the router would have
to receive and re-send that broadcast, most home routers are simply not
made for that, after all the broadcast would not work over the Internet
anyway.
Routers usually route a message based on the address but the broadcast
doesn't have a dedicated address to route to, it's targeted at all
devices. Which is why it is not supposed to work on the internet or
even behind a router because otherwise you would get really, really
prolific traffic.

Yep. WiFi can be strange.
Yesterday, for example, I simply would not get a stable connection to
my Router with my MacBook. Same with my Touch, both devices kept
dropping off the network.
My iThingies, my Radio and most of the time my SB3 worked fine
(everything else is wired).

I tried everything including resetting all switches and routers to no
avail. No other Routers on the same channel, no IP conflicts, nothing.

Today, everything's ok again

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] RadioFeeds plugin - potential problem with SBS?

2010-07-27 Thread pippin

I only tested it on 7.6 but there you have a few issues with it, mainly
that the installation of strings seems to be broken, I get no menu
names but only tags

Apart from that:How can I tell the two versions of the menu apart? they
do indeed look the same for me.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] RadioFeeds plugin - potential problem with SBS?

2010-07-27 Thread pippin

OK, could this be going on:

your plugin is registering commands and menus under the name
"radiofeeds"
Could it be that that's actually the same name under which the built-in
"MySB" App registers it's commands?
In that case it would probably take precedence and you get redirected
to that menu when using SqueezePlay based devices to render the menu.

Try changing that command name to something like radiofeeds_plugin.

I know I had the same issue with ubuntu and Michael answered with some
reference.
Have you had a look at the Album Review and Biography thread here?

Well, if the plugin renders strange HTML tags it will do so everywhere,
wouldn't it?
It's the same on the SB itself.
Web browser is not affected because it knows how to render HTML itself.

OK, it's the MySB version.
I think it's as I suggested, you need to change the CLI command name in
the plugin.

My installation was Ubuntu and I installed it in

which is IMHO where it's supposed to go.

The reality is that it was good to have it slowly coming since if I had
had it coming fast there would have been quite a few bugs in there.

Multitasking DID have it's side effects on iOS4 and those created a
number of nice crashes - probably the ones already observed by some
people.

For now, it's in Apple's hands, have to get through the review.

Not completely.

Not compared to Mobile Navigator

Look. I said it before: iPeng is not a simple App.
I can't comment on other Apps and I don't know what problems Mobile
Navigator had to fix but this was not an issue of simply recompiling
the App, there were substantial changes to be done to some features.

The alarms bug was a rather simple fix but it had severe implications
because it required the whole App needed to be compiled against iOS4
SDK. It's of course time to do this anyway but it means you have to
adapt the App to all other changes in that API, too.

Oh, and Apple says that there are over 1,500 API changes in iOS4, just
to give you a dimension. Most of them are actually new stuff but
still...

And given Apple's review process takes one or two weeks to release an
App you simply can't afford to release that kind of change without
testing. I still don't feel too comfortable with this release even
though recent beta tester feedback was good but if it was just me, I
would have given it another week.
So please don't complain if you'll find that you get different bugs in
exchange for a fixed Alarm control, you asked for it.
