A new and shocking piece of information is that here in big bad Hew York

of the largest P2 contingents around. HERE...Last night, newer members
Nina Melechen and Micah Raferty and Jason Lewis joined Mrs. and Mr.
Hockeystick and me at that Kelly Willis/Bruce Robson show which was
swell...New York area P2ers now include the following...People are known to
show up here form Philadelphia, Connecticut, and even Boston too. They know
who they are!

Wow Barry, pretty amazing. There's probably more out there in the bushes
too.

Now...if we could only get some of these folks to make pilgrimages together
out once in awhile to see some of us "small fry" like the afore-mentioned
Star City, or Elena Skye, or the Alphabet City Opry, or even...yes, dammit,
the Ghost Rockets! insert dramatic crescendo, cymbal crashes

Y'all come out once in a while say howdy, okay? We've all had our shots,
like to meet new faces, won't steal your girlfriends, brush after every
meal... besides, you never know when you'll have to pay the Big Bucks to
see one of us at Che Stadium (named after the famed Cuban guerilla leader,
Che Stadium) you missed your opportunity to see us for free at the Rodeo
Bar or for $3 at 9C...

Re: Buck's Hot Dog?

1999-04-22 Thread Budrocket

Unless you can dig up some old Starday compilations from the 60s, which
regularly featured old Buck recordings from his pre-Capitol days on small
labels such as X and Pep, you're going to have to get your early Buck from
(*gasp!*) b-o-o-t-l-e-g sources.

DISCLAIMER: This in no way *encourages* the patronization of the bootleg
industry, but is provided for information and entertainment purposes only.
g

On vinyl there was a late 70's release called "Hot Dog!" from the "Apex
Record Corporation" of Hollywood; features a bright yellow cover the same
photo from the front of the Capitol Lp "Sings Tommy Collins," and the Pep
logo.

At Tower in NYC several years ago I found a Nice Price'd CD called "You're
For Me" which is most certainly a bootleg. With a cheap, homemade looking
single-sided insert, it features 12 tracks from his indie days, the company
is "Creative Sounds, Ltd" from Aluquerque. As recently as three or four
years ago Time/Life put out a Buck "Best Of," as part of their classic
country series, which included as a final bonus track the original Corky
Jones cut of "Hot Dog!," which they licenced from the old man hisself.

Does the Buck Owen's vinyl lp called "Hot Dog" contain some of that
pre-Buckaroos, late-50s stuff that Buck did as "Corky Jones"?

If not, what are the names of the lps that had this stuff. Were these
bootlegs of some sort, or were they on a label?

GHOSTROCKETS SPEND
SPRING BREAK IN VERMONT!

Friday March 26, Saturday March 27, 1999

With two shows at:

TOADSTOOL HARRY's
Rt. 4 in the Sherburne flats,
East of Route 100,
(Across from the Pasta Pot,
Between Killington Mountain access road
and the Skyeship Gondola Base)
Killington, VERMONT
802.422.5019

Yup, that's right down the road from
Killington Mountain, and yes,
there's still tons of snow up there.

Shows start shortly after 10pm each night.
Local band ELBOW will warm up both nights.

A Saturday afternoon invitational bluegrass pickin' party is planned at
the house Mickrocket rents up there for nefarious snowboarding purposes.
We'd love to have some pickers come down scare the living daylights out of
us, toss back few in front of the fireplace kick back with some great
music before we trudge off to work again that night, so if you pick or know
of anyone in the area that might be interested, email us back for details
(got any VT contacts, Jon? If so feel free to pass this on them or Bgrass-L
or whomever).

B-Bender

1999-03-21 Thread Budrocket

What exactly is a B-Bender? A drink? Guitar? Style of playing the B-string
on a guitar? Early version of the wonderbra?
By the way, is the G. Parsons to which "Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man" is
co-credited Gram or Gene?
Lance . . .

The Parsons-White B-Bender is a spring pulley device Gene Parsons invented
for Clarence White's Telecaster. When you pull down on the neck of the
guitar, it activates a pulley connected to the strap button on the upper
bass bout of the guitar which pulls the B-string and bends it up up a
whole step, which enables one to simulate the string-bending effect of a
pedal steel guitar. Quite an ingenious device, which he has since gone on
to market professionally over the last 30 or so years. Gene has his own
business that builds installs it; its also currently available from Fender
as a custom option, as well as being featured on one of their Tele models.
Its been used by countless musicians since.

There's a less expensive device that does the same thing called a Hipshot,
retailing at about $80, which can be retro-fitted onto an electric guitar
with out having to route out the inside to install the Parsons String Bender
mechanism. I've had a Hipshot on on my Tele for the last 10 years or so.
The tone and the "pull" are not quite the same, but it works for me, at
least until I can afford one of the Real Things.

"Drugstore Truck Drivin' Man" was co-written with GRAM Parsons in London,
just prior to the South African disaster, was a sarcastic riposte to the
Nashville audience who had rejected the Byrds after their guest appearance
on the Grand Ole Opry in 1968. More specifically, the song was directed
against Ralph Emory (ie: "this one's for you, Ralph" as McGuinn says at the
end of the cut), who had denounced the Byrds as longhairedhippyweirdofaggots
on his radio show. Between record plays and right-wing comments about the
Byrds, Emory would announce commercials for various items such as truck
components, and it was from this that McGuinn developed an image of the drug
store truck drivin' man who was so reactionary that he mightg as well be
head of the Ku Klux Klan.

My goodness, you found me out!

Thanks for mentioning the show, Kat. This was a rare
all-bluegrass show by Greg, we were all pretty stoked to be doing it with
him.

Just wanted to expand clarify a couple of the names:
the bassist was BOB JONES, also a fabulous guitar picker,
AND the guy everyone 'round here goes to for instrument repair. He's got a
shop in Brooklyn does fine, fine work.

The female lead harmony vocalist featured on several
songs in both sets was the lovely talented Mary Olive SMITH, a weekly
regular at the Alphabet City Opry, my new Opry duet partner now that the
equally lovely talented Elena Skye is on the road so much these days
(*snif!*).

We were fortunate enough to convince Mr. Garing to pull out
the fiddle, and boy can he set fire to that baby. That's when ol' Bob came
over on guitar...and I got to quickly learn how to play stand up bass in front
of a packed house...boy, talk about learn-while-you-earn...(you woulda been
proud of me, Jon! Next time we run into each other I hope you'll show me

conglomerate. One of the many things he did was licence distribute
videos from many different companies, such as Broadway Video (Lorne Michaels'
company; one of the vid's PA distributed was All You Need Is Cash,
the Rutles documentary).

He entered into a deal with PBS to distribute Ken Burns'
Baseball series that aired on PBS a few years ago. I don't
know all of the details, but they screwed him over on the deal, after
sinking a LOT of capital into the venture he had to go after PBS, which tied up
their money. He was then unable to pay the repo houses that duplicated all
the videos for him, which caused them to sue his company for non-payment,
etc. Result, Pacific Arts/Rio went under. Glad to hear he prevailed,
hope to see him back up running again.

During all this, he recorded and produced the Monkees reunion
CD, Justus, as well as writing directing the brillliant
reunion TV special on ABC a couple years ago, did a European tour with
them to vast acclaim before that little squirt Davy fucked things
up...AGAIN. Latest news I hear is Davy has decided to sue Rhino Records
for non-payment of royalties or something, they've frozen royalty payments
for the rest of the group as well while litigation works it way out.
Whatta schmuck.

Incidentally, Mike has written his first novel, The Long
Sandy Hair of Neftoon Zamora, which was released by St. Martin's Press in
December. He just did a book signing at Barnes Noble here in NYC on
Jan 29th...woo-hoo!!

California harmonies (was Soul)

1999-02-02 Thread Budrocket

Speaking of which, has P2 ever talked about the whole
California country rock style of harmony where it's always in
unrelentingly sweet thirds-no tension, no dissonance, no variation?

Er, ah, that's your basic bluegrass harmony. Not Stanley
mountain music, bluegrass. Via Chris Hillman, Herb
Pedersen, Doug Dillard, Bernie Leadon,Jim Dickson (producer),
et.al...Where's that dang Budrocket when youneed him, anyhow?
He's got a pretty good grasp of the details.
I only find this style cloying when
over-used or ILL-used by inferior imitators (which may even include, er,
US). As for the Byrds, you can't find anything more glorious than the
outro of Bells Of Rhymney, or the spooky, bagpipe-drone of the pedal
tone background harmonies on If You're Gone (from the Turn,Turn,
Turn Lp).

As for Herb Pedersen, check out his harmony arrangements for
the Dillards; some really beautiful bluegrass-meets-Beach Boys intervals, lots
of shape-note influenced note bending.

Interestingly enough, Dillards mandolinist, Dean Webb,
assisted the Byrds in developing their first hit record. Back in 1964,
both bands rehearsed at World Pacific Studios (under the ageis of manager Jim
Dickson) were friends. Driving home late one night, Dean passed by
World Pacific noticed Dickson's Volkswagen parked in the lot.
Inside, Dickson was vainly attempting to settle a loud argument involving
members of the Byrds (no surprise there...listen to the hidden track
on the Notorious Byrd Bros. reissue). They were divided on how the harmony
should sound on a particular song they were trying to record. Dean was
drawn into the dispute and asked to solve the dilemma. He took McGuinn
aside worked out the parts on tape, singing tenor to McGuinn. When
that was done, Dean sang the baritone. The Byrds carefully followed Dean's
arrangement, and easily recorded the song in straight triad harmony. The
result was Mr. Tambourine Man.

Further revelations on the California sound can be
found in Desperados, the upcoming book by Canadian writer John Einarson...should
be a corker, when finally released!

Someone else made this argument too, and I have to say, so what?
Everdrawn 100 people at one of your gigs, Buddy?

As a matter of fact, yes Bob, I have do draw at *least* that many,
a good deal more, thank you. And you?

Danny Barnes' profile has nothing to do with the point that a label's
completely unnecessary to disseminate your music on CD anymore.Sure
it does. How do you think he was able to book said mini-tour, got
those folks to come out to his gigs buy those CDs in the first
place? Why, NAME RECOGNITION, not to mention a little extra investment
capital. Sure, anyone who can afford to buy, rent, or borrow a burner can
disseminate their music on CD. You can give 'em away, leave a pile on the
counter at the 7-11, or next to the cigarette machine at your local club.
Doesn't mean you can get anyone to shell out the bucks though, and you cannot
force people to care. Sure does help having people who are aware of your
reputation discuss your wares among each other in, say, internet lists like this
one.

Unless you've got lots of disposable income, in the absence of a
significant amount of sales there will come a time when such projects become
less less feasible more of a financial burden.

And who wants to be signed now that you can buy your own CD burner
and laser printer and print up CDs as you need them, at the rate you
need them, etc?Danny Barnes is doing just this --
burning 100 copies of his new releasesand selling 'em for $25. They're
selling out. But the problem here goesthe other way. If you're happy
with 100 people hearing your latestrelease, that's fine, but a lot of
bands (and fans) wouldn't be.Bob

I suspect Danny Barnes ain't hurtin' too much financially these days, his
profile being a little higher than the rest of us, having had releases on both
Quarterstick and Sugar Hill...not to mention this other fun stuff:
composed and performed the score for the 20th Century Fox film The Newton
Boys, recorded with Bill Frisell the score for the HBO documentary American
Hollow, played the banjo on the upcoming Disney children's CD, The
Sounds of Springtime...etc. Oh yes, Danny is represented by
the Davis McLarty Agency.

Hell, he had to be able to afford that CD burner
somehow...

The fifth Beatle Clarence White

1999-01-18 Thread Budrocket

According to the All (Knowing) Music guide, Clarence White participates
inevery Byrds album from Younger Than yesterday to
Farther along. However,he's not an official
member until after Sweetheart. So, here's myquestion: If
he's just a session until Easy rider, what songs does he
playon prior to that album? And also, at what point does he start
touring withthe band? And, finally, does anyone else notice a similarity
between thesong Nashville West, and Todd Snider's My
Generation (Part 2)?Clarence's
pre-official Byrd status apearances:
YOUNGER THAN YESTERDAY (1967)
Time Between (which also
features Vern Gosdin on acoustic guitar), Girl With No
Name
NOTORIOUS BYRD
BROTHERS (1968)
Wasn't Born To Follow, Change Is Now,
Goin' Back (also with Orville Red Rhodes on
steel)
SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO (1968)
A *lot* of the tracks, but you can really hear him backing up
the last verse of One Hundred Years From Now
Also...
GENE CLARK WITH THE GOSDEN BROTHERS (1967)
Released the same week as Younger Than Yesterday,
features the Byrds rhythm section (Hillman Michael Clarke).

Clarence's official status as a Byrd began when they returned
from their disasterous South African tour (minus one Gram Parsons) July 1968,
he appeared live on their next album DR. BYRDS MR.
HYDE (1969) in that capacity, continuing through the end of that
configuration of the group in 1972. He was not a part of the reunion on
Asylum Records in 1973...which really isn't *that* bad of an album, if you ask
me...

Brooks is already pretty bluegrass-friendly, what with being the
only personin the world able to reunite the Newgrass Revival g,
and he carries one ofthe best bluegrass bass players and singers around
in his band, even if sheonly sings and doesn't play bass therein.
I also hear from reliable sourcesthat he has a killer version of
The Fields Have Turned Brown in the can, with Carl Jackson
singing harmony.Ah-h! Which makes it all the easier to get our

Read Dreaming Out Loud for a blow by blow account of his
obsession for control, to the point where he was making so much moeny and
had everyone at the label in a strangle hold, there was very little left

Gotta great story about that, heard from someone I know that
was signed to Capital at the time, but isn't anymore. Names have been
changed to protect their parents...

Mr. X told me that the guy Garth maneuvered into
Jimmy Bowen's place knew absolutely ZERO about music. There was a
marketing meeting at Capital that the New Guy sat in on. They were
discussing a project where they took old Patsy Cline recordings paired up
current country singers to duet with her, like Hank Jr's Tear
In My Beer. They were having some trouble with one of the artists
being able to clear his or her schedule in time to make the recording date,
the New Guy reportedly said, well why doesn't someone call Patsy
 ask her to intervene?.
