chuckle-headed, lying asshole.

Re: Good covers (was: Kelly Willis calling the shots)

1999-04-05 Thread Pflash40

You know, I'm glad this came up because as we speak I'm taping some of the
Pine Valley Cosmonauts LP. What strikes me is that the songs which fail do
so because they spotlight vocalists who are weak singers. Or, maybe it's
that they are trying to adopt the Wills arrangements too strictly, which
were able to feature a singer as fitted for those arrangements as Tommy
Duncan was.
This is probably why Merle and Willie and George Strait can pull off Western
Swing. It's not that their bands aren't all respectively brilliant, it's
just that each of their voices is distinctively complementary. As Willie
might say, they're aging with time like yesterday's wine. I hope some of
these folks on the PVC do stick with the swing, maybe they'll have a great
album before long. Or maybe someone should convince Dwight Yoakam to sing
with the band.

you are so right about the pine valley cd which i have tried to like but
finally gave up on for that exact reasonmusically i like lots of and
vocally some of but it just winds up a pale comparison to some really good
weatern swingi am far from a purist on this but some folks just don't
have the voice (or should i say phrasing) to pull off these songsoh well,
i guess bob wills is still the king

Re: Drake (Re: Kelly Willis calling the shots)

1999-04-03 Thread Pflash40

Which reminds me, any minor or major Drake fan want to offer up a good
starting point into that artist's catalog? I need to go buy yet another CD
that I've never gonna have enough time to appreciate to its fullest. Sigh...

as a starting point and ending point i always turn to five leave left which
will forever remind me of the dark brooding period of time when i discovered
this dark brooding piece of workdrake is one of those artists that you
tend to love or hate and i do love his work although he is one of those i
listen to only when in a certain moodand usully that mood is dark when i
dogive all his work a chance but i do suggest five leaves to begin
with

as for kelly willis and her versioni love her new record but her version
of "time has told me" just doesn't quite work for methat is probably
largely due to the fact that i enjoy the original so much but her version
just doesn't capture the mood of drake'snow, if her cover opens some eyes
and makes people wonder who nick drake is then ms. willis will have done a
lot of good...i do hope more will check drake out and maybe this is a
start

of course lucinda williams did a very nice cover of drake's "which will" that
is as brooding as drake so often was but then for some reason i believe drake
and lucinda might have been able to relate on certain issuesthe woman
knows how to brood pretty well as she has shown

Probably because he got the big gig with the Dallas Morning News, one of
the better daily papers in the country (IMHO of course) although I think the
music section is not as good as when Michael Corcoran was in that positon.

the dallas paper is good but as conservative as they come and bow down to
local big business like there is no tomorrowand the music section got weak
after corcoran leftsome folks might not like mike but he had stylebyt
then havin a style is not what the morning news really wants from it's

He was a good man, a kind man who knew the

rules and the oddities in life and always

strove to be honest and charitable. When told that he would be throwing

out the first ball in Yankee Stadium this year, Joe just smiled - that faint

smile Joe always gave when in his soul he knew truth from lies.

The world needs to remember his example. This man was and IS a sports hero.

where have you gone joe dimaggio.here's hoping to an even better place.

Guess they didn't know about Joe Ely's tour with the Clash. UT was a
decade too late.

and the unfortunate part of this is joe ely has yet to really find his
decadeone of those artists who has been mining this "genre" (whatever the
hell you folks want to call this genre) for yrs and yrs yet has never really
broken thruyes, he has a nice base of people who like and respect him but
he has never made that big jump and that is shame

Re: Texas Music Cafe Q?

1999-02-20 Thread Pflash40

hmmm...maybe i am the only person who has seen this program. i have only seen
it once on the PBS station in the dallas/ft. worth area but have meant to look
for it again. not sure when it is on but i was amazed that is was being done
out of waco, tx which is the home of Baylor University, the baptist school
that did not allow dancin on it's campus until just a few years ago. not that
that had anything to do with the Texas Music Cafe but i have never thought of
waco as a hotbed of music in Tx.

it has been a while ago that i saw this program but it caught my attention
because a dallas area swing band, cowboys and indians, was one of the artists
becoming spotlighted. i thought the show was a noble effort but the production
on some of it was lacking. seems some of it was shot in theater/studio and
that part looked fine but the cowboys and indians segment was shot at a club
and lacked good camera work. i seem to recall the show did interviews with the
artists and spent time showing setup for the shows in the theaters. i can't
recall the other artists except to say there was a blues band and a female
folksinger. i have meant to look for the show again and now that i have been
reminded of i will.

i did think it was a noble effort for the waco folks and considering i have
only seen one show, i can hardly say more. hope this helps.

How many of you know what Waylon's last words to Buddy Holly were?
(Hint: see his autobiography. It was on one of my old .sig files, but I
took it off 'cos it was even too scary for me.)

yeah it is a very scary quote and i can only imagine how strange waylon musta
felt after he heard the news.if you don't know thet quote, vh-1's behind
the music is running a buddy holly story tonite with jennings talking about
the night and what he said to holly.mark

1999-02-03 Thread Pflash40

As for his obvious bitterness toward

Robertson, my gut feeling is that he has a point. I don't know the

particulars, of course, but in EVERY single interview I've seen with

Robertson, it seems very important to him that he be perceived as an

introspective, soulful, "thinking man."

you know, maybe that is exactly what he is.even in the band he was always
dark and brooding or seemed so.his solo work has continued in that dark,
moody vein so maybe that is just him.anyway, it is a shame there is a rift
whoever caused it and it is a shame levon seems so unhappy about it all even
after all these yrsas i said, levon was my favorite "voice" in the band
and considering how many good voices that group offered that is saying a
lot
