5300 REA thanks

2001-07-16 Thread ZITAOHE

Hi all,
Thanks to Remy Ed for their 5300 REA input. Looks like this is going to
take some more time to get some results.

My friend had a friend in the US call Apple with the number someone on the
list gave about the adapter recall. They didn't know anything about the 5300
REA.

This fellow then called Apple tech suport was told there is no such 5300
rework program currently running.

Sounds like the same story I got in Tokyo. I wonder if he was just talking to
people who don't know Macs made before the G3 or IBook.

Now that I think of it I bought a PB 190 about 4 years ago from a non profit
organization who had received them as a donation. I was a newbie at the time
and it came with a Japanese system so I gave up trying to figure how to use
it.

My Japanese husband took it it broke. The authorized Apple repair place he
took it to said it was the logic board which he paid over 70,000 yen (over
500 US) to replace.

I don't have the serial number handy but now I wonder.

My friend leaves for the US within the next 24 hours so it's too late for
her to lug my PB with her without knowing if it will be covered by the REA so
I'll have to push on this end. She's bringing hers though.

Wonder if the REA only works in English speaking countries where people tend
to be more assertive about pushing for things.

Will tell the list if I get any results .

Regards,
Zita

PS. On the which powerbook do you use question. I use both a 520C a Duo
280C for basic email and writing.

Re: Major Problems for some 1400's with Sonnet Upgrade

2001-07-16 Thread Karl Gerlach

I recently upgraded my 1400 with a Sonnet G3 and I believe was running 8.6. I did
not experience any problems.

90% will experience no problems whatsoever with a G3 upgrade for the 1400, and I am
assuming that the American OS 8.6 is fine. But there are Danes, Finns, French,
Germans, Australians, British, Swedes, Dutch and Japanese (Did I leave anyone out?)
also on this list and those OS's might be affected on some 1400's. If it's your 1400,
however, it is 100% for you, and Sonnet has not publicized this quirk at all.
According to them, it is an issue with any G3 card, so they blame Apple, somewhat like
Goodyear expecting Volkswagen to manufacture cars to match their tires. A simple
notice on Sonnet's website would have been extremely helpful, just as most vendors
tell you beforehand the screws won't fit the newer, larger HD's, but not to worry.

This should not discourage anyone from purchasing the G3 upgrade if you wish. Simply
know that if you or someone you know experiences the problems I described, the answer
is to go to 9.1 or down to 8.5 so you will not go through the three weeks of computer
hell that I did.

Focus Lapiscolor MV16 Video/Ethernet Card

2001-07-16 Thread bgeiger

Hello Everyone,

I just had installed a Focus Lapiscolor MV16 Video/Ethernet Card in
my 5300C and can't seem to recognize the ethernet function. My set up:
40MB RAM, 750 MB HD, OS 7.6.1.

The software installing said it would install 4 control panels, one
of which did not seem to load (network control panel). I tried all the
usual and recommended methods to try and reinstall properly but nothing
worked. Anyone have any advise or luck with such a card?

Heather,
Yes, I was going to say that I considered both those others before
choosing a 3400. The speed, display, RAM capacity, as I recall, made up my

Re: Any hope for PB 1xx batteries?

2001-07-16 Thread commercialkurt99

Normally, I'm just a lurker on this list, but I have to
correct one posting concerning reviving NiCad
batteries. It's not a good idea to run NiCad's all the
way down if they are connected in series. What ends up
happening is that at some point one cell in the string
runs out of juice and cannot supply current - from that
point on it is subject to reverse voltage, which is very
damaging to the cell. You can ruin even a good string
of NiCads this way.

There is a technique for improving the performance of
NiCads by connecting them to a very low impedance load.
The theory here is that over time the Cadmium builds up
into large crystals at the anode, and subjecting the
battery to large current tends to break up these
crystals and restore them to the small state, which is
lower impedance. However, you don't want to fully
discharge the battery in this manner, and you have to be
careful not to blow up the battery (the high current
heats up the battery, too).

For more information on rechargeable batteries, you can
go to this link:

http://www.buchmann.ca/

Cheers,

Kurt

P.S. I have a G3 Powerbook 1400 (best laptop keyboard

some charge (say 45 mins or so) or are they just scrap?

About the only thing you can try is to deep
dischargethem. Do this
by connecting a load to the battery terminals. The load
should be 10
ohms or more. Leave it with the load connected
overnight and then
recharge it. If it still doesn't hold a charge it's
pretty much
dead. At this point the only thing you can do is to
open the
battery up, remove the dead cells and swap in good cells
from other
batteries.

I bought brand-new batteries, third-party PRAM batteries, 32 MB RAM upgrades
and PPC Upgrade Cards, all off of eBay.

I looked for completed auctions and then asked the seller if he had more in
stock. He usually did.

In this way, I bought:

Four main batteries,

Two PRAM batteries,

One 32 MB RAM upgrade, and

Two PPC Upgrade Cards.

Good prices are about as follows ...

Main batteries ... $60

PRAM batteries ... $12

32 MB RAM upgrades ... $65

PPC Upgrade Cards ... $99

The result of all this was one good machine and two non-working machines were
restored to full function ... and two were upgraded to the maximum possible
configuration at the in the process.

I left my 520c as a 12 MB machine (although the CPU is a 33/66 MHz from one
of the 540c's) and left it as a 68K so that the PCMCIA card cage could still
be used (it is a Rev. B and a Rev. C is required for use with the PPC Upgrade
Card).

The two others are now 40 MB PPC upgraded 540c's.

All have modems and the modem software was upgraded to 2.5.5.

All were tested with either Ethernet printers or DSL modems.

I only have the original battery CSM. Does anyone use anything that is
more useful. The one I have doesn't seem accurate at all. Should I
reset the powermanger?

Well, here's the tabulation (as best as I could). Some Duos weren't
specified as what model, so I lumped those together in a 'Misc Duos

150 - 3
160 - 2

Wallstreet - 4
Lombard - 3

yes, and yes.

Faster computers = faster network experience, to a point. Definitely
moving up to a 56k modem will improve matters as well, probably more

About the big list of PowerBooks in my previous post:
Maybe I should've specified - since I posted the question to start the
count, I figured I'd tally up what everyone has as best I could (so far) and
post it on the list.

I got a few emails asking me why the heck I had so many PowerBooks and how I
managed to get so many, etc, etc.

All I can say is that I have a 170, a parts 520, and a 540c.

You know, in an odd way, you finally resolved that
lingering, nagging doubt about over-clocking. On one
hand, I agree with you. I have never bought a kit
for anything before and do all my own repairs and
upgrades. (Don't even ask how many desktop Macs this
has involved.) All I'm going to use the 520/540c is
for text production and *maybe* email (with an
external modem). It needs to be over-clocked about as
much as it needs to be painted candy apple red. I have
always entertained the notion of over-clocking
something but sometimes you don't do something just
because you can.

Thanks,

The supplied heat sink is designed for 33/66 MHz, maximum.

The 5xx series is cooled by conduction, by a heatsink of limited size, which
cannot be extended due to the constraints of the card cage.

Chipping beyond the design limit doesn't make much sense unless you can get
the extra heat out.

Using OS 8.6 can make a big difference on the 1400. It is largely PPC

8.6. This makes a big difference, especially on the earlier PPC machines

I don't know if you can configure the PC Card modem for speeds faster than
57.6 Kbps so you may not get much compression with a 56K modem but it will
still be faster than a 28.8.

As to the question of modem speed vs processor speed, when talking about
web page rendering it's a toss up. Some pages are very processor intensive
and some aren't.
