DISK Images; What are they?

2001-10-04 Thread tbrock

Regarding system install disks, what are disk images? Also, why stop at
8.1 for powerbooks as recent as the 3400's? It seems like some
p-bookers are running operating systems into the nines.

Thanks for your replies! Thomas The Kinders

Narcoleptic 520c

2001-10-04 Thread John Humphrey

I zeroed out the hard drive and reinstalled my software.
I ran Norton and Disk Warrior. Zapped etc.
But my 520c is still having serious sleep issues. It
won't fully wake up. I'll hear the hard drive spin up
and then I may get most of the screen back. But the
mouse never actually becomes active.
I found this:
O'Grady's PowerPage - PowerBook 500
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/tenchi/500.html#Trouble-Shooters
PB wont sleep/freeze on wake/crash on sleep (NOTE, problem with 7.6.1)! First
check all your extensions! Start with no extension (Shift
Key held on startup), then try sleeping. Apple once mentioned a software patch
to fix it, but I have never seen a patch itself. Bottom line, 99% of all these
problems is extension and/or control panels. Only if crash continues with no
extensions is an OS or hardware problem the cause. This may be the trickest
problem to fix. Try running a newer version of the OS. I have noticed that any
number of things could cuase the problem, even a simple as a CD-ROM or ZIP
disk not in the SCSI drive.

But even with extensions off I'm experiencing the same problem. Anyone know
anything about the Apple software patch mentioned above?
I'm running 8.1 and the Powerbook Control Panel is version 7.6.1
My hard drive is rather full. Could that be it?

Thanks!

powerbook 5300 and # monitor colors

2001-10-04 Thread K

After having rebuilt a powerbook 190cs into a 5300 ce? (using parts from a
real 5300 ce- 117mhz motherboard, 16 + 48 ram, powerboard, video board). I
had thought the monitor control panel would now give me more options for
monitor colors. I have choices from black white, up to 'thousands' of
colors. There is no option for 'millions' and only 'one' option for screen
resolution size.
I think these were the same settings I had on the 190cs.

Question:
Are these the expected options with this new motherboard and video board?

Flash Cards as RAM?

2001-10-04 Thread coltrane davis

Hi folks: can anyone share their experiences on using flash cards
(Compactflash, ATA Flash, etc.) as Virtual Memory on their PowerBooks? ie:
format the card as a drive and use that drive as VM to augment PBs with low
max RAM ceilings (specifically, the 5300). Is there any point if CF or ATA
Flash is slower than a HD?

In a word, yes. I have an always been 5300 ce, with 64Mb of ram running OS
8.6 and those are the monitor options that I have.

To paraphrase the Blues Brothers, What do you want from a Mac that was

Flash Cards as RAM?

2001-10-04 Thread Donna Hood Pointer

I have a Compact Flash card in my PB520 in the card cage. It automatically
recognizes it as an extra harddrive (shows up as a PC format on the
desktop). this is perfectly usable and the CF card can still be used
directly in PC machines (for transferring digital pix for instance. The
readme says In order to see it as a mac drive, I would have to turn of PC
Exchange and then reformat that drive. However, once I did that, if I ever
wanted it formated pc/dos again it is necessary to do that with the CF in a
dis machine, because drive setup or the erase or reformat on the mac cannot
do that. I think if I did format that drive it would then be available to
use as virtual memory, because the mac would see it as a mac drive. It is my
understanding that this is faster than the regular harddrive for VM ,
because it is connected to the motherboard via the cardcage connection.

Re: Flash Cards as RAM?

2001-10-04 Thread Michael Dolberry

No dumb questions here!

I am using a Compact Flash memory card with a pc-card
adapter.

Both of these can be found at CompUSA, etc. in the
digital camera area. Better prices can be found on the
internet, if you are willing to wait. In fact,
dealmac.com has a notice today for a compact flash 128
mb card for less than $50. If I had the money, I
personally would grab it. The adapter can be found for
less than $10, from time to time, but usually around
$25 anywhere.

Please don't make my silly mistake. I have my PB1400
maxed out to 64 meg of RAM. So, I thought that another
64mb card would be enough for added Virtual Memory. I
FORGOT that VM has to fit all on the same space. So,
when I went to set up the Memory on the card it gave
me the disk is not large enough for Virtual Memory
alert. OOPS! Get at least a 128 meg card.

As far as setting the card up to be used as memory, it
is fairly easy. The 1400 is already set up to
recognize compact flash cards. When you insert the
adapter, it mounts as a PC-formatted disk (with a
PC-card logo, on my screen). I reformatted it as a Mac
disk using the Erase Disk... menu. I was told that
this was the right thing to do, and it seemed to work.

Then, just go into the Virtual Memory control panel
and select the card and the amount of memory to be
used. Your computer doesn't access the hard drive near
as often, and for me, the memory seems more stable and
runs faster, since there are no moving parts inside
the card.

I also put my documents and web cache on the card. Two
more things that typically cause the hard drive to
spin up most often.

One caution: I have heard that compact flash cards are
rated for a certain number of writes and then MAY
start losing data, just like a floppy disk.
Theoretically, all those frequent calls to memory may
wear out the card and cause failures. So I am told.
But, I haven't heard this happen to anyone yet.

Thank you for this highly informative post. I'm always
amazed at the answers found here.

I an going to try to replace the batteries inside the

risking much and it may be fun. It looks like I can
modify a battery tray in one of my children's dead
toys to accept the batteries and it might fit back in
the casing. It's worth a try. Modular, convenient and
ecologically-friendly. I suppose that I stand a chance
of not being able to recharge them inside the

PB battery power primer :)

2001-10-04 Thread Martin

I replaced the exhausted cells of my original PB 145 battery with new
NiMH cells, with several advantages: the original NiCd cells were rated
at 1300 mAh ( or 1.3 Amp/hour ), while today's NiMH cells of the
same physical size are capable of 2000 mAh output. It's a matter of
carving the sealed case open (I cut along the seam around the original label),
extracting the old cells, and replacing them with tabbed cells of the same
size, making sure to maintain polarity, and to include the thermal shutoff
sensors in the circuit. It's easier than it sounds, though my longtime
soldering experience helped.

Creating a dummy battery to act as a feed for a large external battery pack
is a very workable idea. Just remove the cells, solder two heavy wires to the
contacts, and run them out the end of the pack. You'll have to drill an oblong
hole in the sliding panel on the battery (pry it off to do this), to allow
the wire to feed out regardless of the position of the panel. If you want to
get fancy, you could mount a jack where the wires pass through the
battery case.
I added a jack to my old full-size camcorder for this purpose, and can run it
from either a hip pouch ( which contains a 4.2 A/hr set of NiMH cells
), or from
my car lighter socket. Choose a durable jack and plug with good contact area;
I find that a 1/4 phono plug is reliable (good old WW II bomber technology),
or a standard RCA style plug and chassis-mounting jack. Either of these will
allow strong current, better than most standard power-jack designs.

Using an external battery to feed through the internal one poses some problems.
For one, the ext battery will only charge the internal to the point where they
are both of equal potential, and no further. Running heavy current through the
weaker cells in the internal battery will damage them. Diodes must be used to
prevent current draining back, preferably in both batteries. It's much better
to use a dummy battery with an external pack, and charge your internal either
later, or on a separate charger.

You can use remote control car battery packs easily for this purpose. I tested
my PB 145, and found that it drew about 2.7 Amps at 7.5 Volts DC on
startup, and
then the draw dropped to around 1.3 Amps (and only 1.1 Amps when the drive spun
down). So I know I need at least a 3 Amp pack providing 7.5 Volts. I
can connect
as many as I need in parallel to achieve this; just tape them together, connect
all the red leads together, and all the black leads together, and I'm all set.
I could build a light case with the same footprint as the PB, made of ply ends
with doorskin top and bottom, a switch and appropriate output/charging jack. Or
use a hip pouch like I did for the camcorder. I don't know the specific power
requirements of the various PB models, but you can get a pretty good idea from
the switching power supply (power adaptor) label, where the output is listed.

The thing to remember is: you CANNOT damage your PB by hooking it to a battery
pack which supplies MORE than your Powerbook draws. If you hook it up to a car
battery (assuming a 12 Volt requirement for the PB), which can output say, 500
A/hr, your PB will only draw what it would have anyway, say 2.5 A/hr
- 3.5 A/hr.
A large battery cannot force more current through your Powerbook. Voltage is
another matter. My PB 145 works in a range between 6-8 volts, and that's that.
Over 8 volts, I cook it, and under 6 volts, the PB circuitry puts it to sleep.
There is only a minimum requirement of about 3 Amps current, and of course,
no upper limit on current. With a 6 volt car battery, I could
probably run it for
a couple of days, but who wants to carry a lead-acid car battery around?

I apologize for the very long post, but as with my earlier soldering
post, I have
a feeling that many of you have ideas about this, but are just fuzzy
enough on the
numbers to chicken out! I can assure you, what I describe above
works, and I've built
these with no problems. I've also built car power adaptors, if you
guys can tolerate
another long post!!! ( You can't just plug a PB into a cigarette
lighter socket, so
please don't! ) If anyone wants info on that, or more detail on
this, I'd be happy
to help out. Again, sorry for the long post.
