I have had the same issue with my PB540c - I think that neither has
enough CPU speed/power to do it. Maybe under another OS at 8-bit mono
8khz but what fun would that be. ;-)

Playing sound files on Pb190

2001-10-16 Thread Johny

Hello all!
I have 2 questions.
1. Can I play mp3 (or wave, or...) sound files on my Pb190? (Mac OS 7.5.3)
2. If yes, then:
where can I find such a software for download.
I tried to find somewhat on the net, but all I have found, they're work
only on PPC machines.

Thanks for any suggestions!
Johnny

I had the SAME experience with my 540: the double-sided pin bar of their
RAM modules seems like a poor design, as the pins tend to embed too deeply
into the plastic substrate, making poor or intermittent contact. I spent
quite some time straightening and polishing the tiny wire contacts on mine,
using a jeweller's loupe to see them properly, because I'd finally tracked
my Sad Mac problems down to the RAM module. The RAM itself was fine, though.

Hope that's all it is.

The processor module is equally easy to bend pins on, as I know
from experience.

Good points, Mike. Though what would worry me is the limitations built in
to the 3400/Kanga graphics card. Generally, it can do 15fps tops.
However, the 2MB/12.1" Wallstreet I can run the DVD kit, so this may not
prove a problem.

If you wanted a challenge, it would be to get the PC card cage upgraded
to take FW. Then I'd slam a DVD drive into a 5.25" FW enclosure and try
that.

Unsure whether MCE will sell their $99 PCMCIA decoder card separately
from the DVD/CDRW drive - can't think why not, unless there's some
licensing restriction (e.g., that VST had). Then again, Apple, AFAIK,
don't own a chunk of MCE.

Cheers,

RD

Well, tonight I tried to get the PB online. It does get online through my
dial-up ISP that I am about to turn off in a few days, but now I can't get
the Netscape browser to work. So there's an old old version of (pooey pooey
I HATE to even say this) AOL (v. 2.7!) that I decided to try. My
mother-in-law has an account that I can access. Well, no go there because
the account name has more letters in it than version 2.7 will allow. So
that's out.

Connecting the Zip has just become WAY too complicated, and now I am glad
that winging their way to me are a CF card, CF PCMCIA adapter, and CF/SM USB
reader for my iMac. Just seems like this is going to be the easiest solution
afterall...glad I found the deals/steals on eBay to make it happen!!!

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Anyone else using the route of CF media with their old PB?

Morgan

Ok, here's a poser - does the encoder card take up enough slack to
allow other PB's to play DVD's as well? I can see a 170mhz (?) PPC

PCMCIA MPEG-2 decoder card (MCE have it and there used to be a WS kit).

Notionally, a SCSI DVD player or DVD-R/RW might work, but they're
horribly expensive. And I don't know what hardware SCSI drives look for.
Cheaqper in the end to simply get a DVD iBook.

Re: Need 3400 advice

2001-10-16 Thread w miller

I'm getting some helpful-sounding advice, which I'll try shortly. Would
knowing that it took an inordinate length of time before the accident for
the 3400 to start up and shut down help in pinpointing which element might
have been out of kilter already? I didn't realize how much longer it took
than it should have until I tried another 3400. It shuts down immediately
and takes mush less time to boot.

An idea is all I have! I had the same problem when I pulled my 540c

I'd imagine a PCMCIA decoder card of some sort, as the processor wouldn't be
able to handle the decoding well on it's own.

Start up one machine.
Turn on AppleTalk. Choose Ethernet.
Start up the other machine.
Turn on AppleTalk. Choose Ethernet.

You may have to restart the first machine. Maybe not, though.

That should be it. You can now mess with the File Sharing control panel
to choose who can access and what they can access.

Select Chooser on one machine.
Click on AppleShare.
Choose the other machine.
Type in the name and pw for the machine.
Click OK.

Now you're connected...

Ahh, but a PPC 5xx will run up to 9... It is supported (somewhat) with just
a little hacking. ResExcellence had info on that.

>How did you manage to get it to install? Via SCSI disk mode?
I used Wish I Were to make the Gestalt look like the _other_ 5xx PPC card
and it booted and installed. Then, using ResEdit, I modified the list of
compatible Macs in the System file, replacing the 'supported' PPC 5xx code
with mine.

It boots just fine, just modem problems.

Speaking of PCMCIA...

2001-10-16 Thread Don Silver

Hi listers,

Recent posts about PCMCIA's have got me thinking of
getting one for my PB 540 (don't have or want the PPC
upgrade, so don't need the "diamond encrusted" :->
rev. C). Three questions:
1-besides being able to use a faster modem card than
my built in GV 19K modem and being able to read
compact flash cards, what other useful things can you
do with a PCMCIA card?
2-do you need separate software to enable the PB 500
to see the card, or does it just show up on the
desktop?
3-Would I have trouble finding non-PPC modem software
for a modem card?

cheers,
Don Silver

No kiddin'! Of course, with a name like '[EMAIL PROTECTED]', IIRC, someone

Just FYI. When I've needed to install software on a PowerBook without
CD-ROM, I've just put the CD in my iMac, shared the CD, and then mounted the
CD on the PowerBooks desktop (or any other Mac for that matter) via
ethernet. Then it installs just as if the CD were actually in the PowerBook.
I've even done OS updates this way.

It has saved me the hassle of connecting a CD-ROM drive to the PowerBook
which on older PowerBooks can be frustrating at times (SCSI voodoo).

Of course this still requires an ethernet option. In a pinch though, you can
use LocalTalk, but then of course that won't work with an iMac, you would
need a Mac with a serial port.

weird problem with Powerbook 520

2001-10-16 Thread Rasiel, Ethan

Wonder if anyone has encountered this problem?

I upgraded my Powerbook 520c with a PowerPC daughtercard. Everything worked
perfectly. However I needed to go back to the old CPU to run an old app that
was incompatible with the PowerPC. Upon switching back to the 68k CPU, the
machine booted with a Sad Mac and the hard drive wouldn't spin up. Tried the
new CPU again, same thing. Disconnected everything and reconnected to make
sure all cables were in tight, but now, when I power-on, all I get is a
clicking sound from the hard drive - sounds like a rotary phone dial. No
fan, no power to screen, no beeps, nothing. When I push command, control,
alt and power at the same time, the clicking stops, though. This happens
with either CPU, and it doesn't matter if I have a boot floppy in the disk
drive. I left it charging all night and it still happened this morning. I
have a new hard drive I could test, but I'm wondering if the system is
damaged in some way, if that could damage the new drive.

Any ideas welcome!

I don't love Zips, myself, but I have found all the drivers I have
ever needed on the 'net and downloaded them to get around the CD
issue. 8-)

OOOpppsss!!! I realized that I read your comment wrong. While there probably
isn't a special driver for the PB, I don't have a driver on the PB at all,
and the driver that came with it came on a CD, and of course the PB has no
CD. So getting the driver installed will be a small PITA. That's why I opted
for spending an extra $30 to bypass the Zips completely and go the route of
PCMCIA CF card.

Thanks again for your suggestions!

No, I didn't mean to imply there was. The reason I have two is because 2 or
3 years ago my business partner needed to hook the SCSI Zip she already had
up to the new non-SCSI iMac, and discovered it was within a few dollars to
purchase a new USB Zip as it was to purchase the SCSI to USB adapter. So,
since I now have two Zips, I can hook the SCSI Zip up to the PB190 and the
USB Zip up to the iMac.

But I have never really liked Zip. Just personal preference.

>ethernet card can be found for a third of the price you're looking to pay.

Well, my iMac is hardwired into an Xrouter wireless hub for cable modem
access, with an iBook with Airport card also accessing the cable modem. I
was looking into getting a wireless PCMCIA card, but they're about $80. I
wasn't sure how hooking up the PB via ethernet might work with the setup I
already have. I don't really need internet access on the PB.

I spent about $30 on a small (only 8MB) CF card, PCMCIA adapter, and USB
CF/SM reader, so I figure I got a pretty good deal. I won't really be
accessing the PB too much, mostly for an intense writing project in
November.

I decided against the VST Tri-Media Reader when I found the CF/SM reader for
$10 on eBay.

I am trying to make this all as portable and fuss free as possible, which is
why I was looking for a way to get around the Zips. I also think it's a
cheaper way of getting some backup storage for some of my files on my iMac,
since I now have everything I need and the CF cards are really cheap through
one online place I found.

But thanks for the suggestions!

Morgan
