Re: Powerbook 3400 100BaseT Ethernet

2002-06-27 Thread Daniel Sirks

I did as you said. The desktop is a 500 mgz Pentium with 128 mb RAM. It ran
between 16.7 and 24.3 K/sec on the Quicken portfolio. The PB3400/200/48 laptop
gets about 3.7-5.7 K/sec speeds on the same portfolio. A test on the internet
said that the speed of the PB laptop is about 1/5 of the typical cable. I wonder
how much more speed I would get with a MPC-200 from Macsense on my 3400. If
anyone knows what I would gain before I spend $100 for the card, please let me
know.

Because I'm wanting an economical flat panel monitor for a Q630.

Why not get a 180c or a 165c with a broken display, and create a
good one? I don't think the other thing is workable.

Sorry I was out the whole day yesterday (6/27)

If the drive has been preformatted it should work. I have IDE drives with
Iodata IDE/SCSI bridge that are recognized by Drive Setup. Drives that have
had their drivers or directory corrupted and won't mount on the desktop are
likely to be saved by DOS formatting.

It's hard to say about the value of upgrading it. I bought a used
5300c and upgraded the HD and memory. Both make a big improvement in
what I could do with it. At the time I got it, it was worth it to
me. Today I might take a look at a better equipped more capable
machine.

BTW, you can get a 56Mb RAM expansion card and max out at 64Mb total.
When I got the memory for mine MemoryX had the best price.

Uhh, I don't know what they were smoking when they wrote that. No two
SCSI chains I've ever seen were alike...though some scanners are picky,
want to be either the first or last devices on the chain.

Ahh, light dawns...You need to go to an electronics shop (a real
one...if you go someplace like Radio Shack you'll get this dazed 'deer
in the headlights' stare if you actually ask for an electronic compnent
there anymore) and get some jumpers, teensy little plastic things that
slip over the pairs of pins (from top to bottom.) Take your drive with
you to show 'em which ones, there are a couple of different sizes.

ID 2,1,0 are the sets of pins I mentioned in my post. Just hold up the
drive or the message upside down ;-)

As for Terminator, Test and Parity, leave them all unjumpered. If you
need to terminate the chain you can put a jumper on the Termination set,
but I usually use external ones, so I can reassemble/add/delete devices
without having to disassemble the drives.

It's odd, though, usually external cases have switches set up on the
back to handle these issues, and a little ribbon cable that connects to
those pins. I don't have many on *my* stuff but that's because they're
an awful mishmash of scrounged bits, none of the cases are holding what
they originally held...

As a former 5300 owner, I wouldn't bother having the thing, much
less upgrading the system, unless I was willing to spend a relatively
trivial amount of $100 to max out the RAM.

PB 5300 RAM question

2002-06-27 Thread Sam Cates

I own a PowerBook 5300c which has recently been through the Apple REA
program and now looks good as new (not shocking, since it seems not to have
been used in 4 1/2 years before I acquired it). It's running System 7.5.3
and currently has 24MB of RAM installed.

I am going to upgrade the system software to 8.1 or 8.6 in the near future;
what I was really wondering about is this: is it worth the $100 or so it
would take to buy a 48MB RAM expansion card, pull the 16MB card inside and
replace it with the 48, and operate the 5300 with 56MB of RAM? How much of
an improvement would I see from doing that, and would it justify the
expense?

Thanks,
John

An RCD 5040 is Pinnacle's second-generation CD-ROM/CD-R device.

I would get Toast before I would get CD-ROM Toolkit.

With Toast (3.x, 4.x or Titanium) you will have the best possible support for
this drive, both as a CD-ROM and as a CD writer.

I'm sure a copy of Toast 3.5 would be easy to find.

Then, you can upgrade it to 3.5.1.

The RCD 5020 (first-generation, caddy loading) and the RCD 5040 (tray
loading) are fully supported for all versions of Toast that I mentioned above.

I've never burned a coaster with either the 5020 or 5040 with Toast. With
Pinnacle's supplied software, most burns result in coasters.

Re: 5300 woes

2002-06-27 Thread Joseph C. Sis, JR.

Thanks Brian, you made me realize I had left out some vital info...

I have a PC card running on the desktop, an old 133mhz Pentium II card,
Radius I believe. It requires a version of PC Exchange to be installed
along with File Exchange. This setup worked fine for months until recently.
The only recent event is trying to install some NONAME USB IDE enclosure on
the desktop. As soon as I tried to use the manufaturers drivers I started
having these problems.

Again, it seems to affect the CD ROM and Compact Flash (USB) as well. The
same problems appeared on the laptop immediately after a file transfer using
SCSI docking.

And now my system locks up on the 5300 is pretty much useless when it comes
to PC floppy disks, PC zip disks and PC CD ROMs, and occassionaly with a MAC
media.

Even a bare bones system with only File exchange results in the same issues.

UGGH.

I'd pop the case and look at the drive mechanism itself...many SCSI
devices printed a Q&D guide to jumper settings on the label.

The other thing looking iside will get you is the model and
manufacturer. Most manufacturers have manuals and settings for their
devices online.

That said, SCSI settings are pretty straightforward, for external
devices you usually only have to worry about ID.

There are three sets of pins to set a SCSI ID, these are usually
labelled ID0, ID1, ID2 or similar.

Then set the ID as follows: (x means jumper those pins)

SCSI addressID0 ID1 ID2
0
1 x
2 x
3 x x
4 x
5 x x
6 x x
7 x x x

There are also sometimes jumpers to enable termination, and whether the
device provides termination power to the bus. ON external devices those
are best left unjumpered, as you'll be using an external terminator,
most likely.

Extension or corrupt prefs for something are much more likely than a virus.

First, realize that having active USB extensions on the 6500 will be very
likely to kill the floppy drive for you. Read or search "The 6400 Zone"
web page forum for details. If you somehow installed USB extensions of any
sort on the 5300, might as well trash them too, they will never work with
anything.
On the desktop, I'd guess that the USB is the most likely culprit.

Otherwise, for both the desktop and the PB:

- delete the file exchange prefs (is PcExchange still on there somehow?
That might be part of it...)
- I found an extension conflict with File Exchange ages ago when I had 8.6
but don't recall what it was. Boot with a absolutely bare minimum
extension set and with PcExchange/File Exchange (I forget when they renamed
it) and see if you can work with PC floppies.

If so, reenable a few extensions at a time until it breaks again, then
trash the prefs of offending extensions and if that doesn't work, then
reinstall the extension.

- search google or www.macfixit.com for known issues with File Exchange
(you might have to pay them for this feature of their site now at
macfixit). I'm sure there are documented conflicts.

-you used to be able to download virex 6.1 for free from the maker's web
site, not sure if that is still on or not. But really a virus is my last
expectation.

Finally, are you sure your disks are OK? I just tossed a 25 pack of
floppies, 3M I think, that just were giving my mac fits. The TDK ones I
replaced them with are fine. they don't do much QC on floppies anymore.

Anybody have settings for external CD-Rom device?

2002-06-27 Thread George Mogiljansky

Hi,
It's a Pinnacle Micro RCD 5040 '96. Website says use
FWB CD-Rom 1.51 (min.). If anybody has this and is
willing to send me a copy, TIA. But I need also the
jumper settings.
Using a known-good HDI-SCSI/Dock adapter (used with
Zip).
Thx

Re: 5300 woes

2002-06-27 Thread Joseph C. Sis, JR.

I have a problem that has imerged on my 5300ce/117/32/6G/8.6 AND my
PM6500/225/128/20G/USB/8.6

If I put in any PC floppy, it locks up, often even with MAC formatted disks.

I even did a reinstall of the OS, clean, and the problem went away for about
2 restarts and then re-emerged! Also, they both lock up if I try to format
a floppy as a PC floppy.

The same symptoms arise if I insert Compact Flash cards, or PC style CD ROMS
(desktop).

I suspect this may be virus based, as I the symptoms manifested themselves
on the desktop prior to connecting them via SCSI docking.

Any hints, suggestions or solutions will be welcomed with big open arms.

Thanks listas,

joseph

Re: Powerbook 5300cs 100BaseT Ethernet

2002-06-27 Thread Daniel Sirks

I am a novice when it comes to these computers. I have a couple of questions
about this topic. Will an MPC-200 from Macsense, also available on Dr. Bott,
for $99.99, with a 32 bit architecture work on the 5300c? Will it give me an
appreciable speed increase in a 5300c? The 5300c says that it has 32 bit
addressing. If that is synonymous with having 32 bit bus, and, therefore, a
Cardbus as opposed to PCMCIA, I wonder why it wouldn't work in a 5300c or in a
3400c? Please let me know if I am not thinking right or if I will not gain
much for the extra $15 outlay. Thanks.

Not in my experience. I had one of 5 partitions go bad on the 20G, I simply
used the Finder to erase the bad partition and have not had a problem since,
5+ years.

Works for me.

No, no term needed. Use the 1.2.2e driver with the Dayna; 2.2.3 doesn't
work properly. The older driver is bug-free in my experience.

Any hope for a dead Wallstreet battery?

2002-06-27 Thread JeanBee

Hi,
We've got what appears to be a totally dead PowerBook G3 Series (Wallstreet)
battery. I've been through the Apple KnowledgeBase suggested drill of
removing/re-inserting the battery dozens of times and have tried Battery
Reset 2.0 several times, with the battery in both the right and left bays.
The battery icon shows on the toolbar with red X thru it ... no indicator
lights on the battery whatsoever.
Anyone know of any last-ditch efforts I could try before I replace it?
TIA,
Jean
