Re: OS 9 for PB 1400?

2002-08-12 Thread Brian

Would a G3 400Mhz upgrade make OS 9 feasible for a 1400? Running 8.1 now
with 56Meg RAM.

It works great on my 400MHz 1400 with 60 RAM. Very responsive. The
accel. boards were on clearance/sale at Sonnet not long ago; I paid
well under $200 for the 400MHz board.

The system plus a tons of extensions, takes up 19-24 megs depending
on how many apps I have running.

There are bugs with 8.6 and quicktime (especially) so I'd jump all
the way up if you jump up at all.

Re: 3400c miscellany

2002-08-12 Thread Tom Roth

I've got two Li-Ions batteries and one will give me about almost two hours and the
other only about an hour to hour 15 minutes. At least once a month I try to
completely discharge them all the way using them instead of the AC adapter and then
let them charge back up. I got the PB3400 and the batteries used so I don't know how
they were treated previously. The Li-Ion batteries are pricey new and I don't know if
they really give any better performance than a standard NiCad. Can anyone comment on
the differences?

Your PB might still have an internal modem but it won't be any faster than 33.6 and
frequently they won't connect any better than 28.8 which might explain the PCMCIA
modem, especially if it's a 56K.

 Hi,
Just a couple of questions about the 3400c:

What is the average battery life? Mine looks like it will struggle to get an
 hour out of it's Li-ions.
Assuming I need a new battery, what am I roughly looking at?

Also, did all 3400's have that internal modem? I sort of assumed my
3400c/200 would have one, but it arrived with that PCMCIA modem in tow, so
now I'm unsure. If it means anything, my 3400 came from the Australian
 market.

So, having an Adaptec PCMCIA SCSI card might handy not be a bad idea, even
for a 5300c or 540c, say, because at least you would have an alternate way of
accessing SCSI devices which don't seem to like the above-mentioned 'book's

Sorry for the long post.

This machine was connecting to the net using dial up at my apartment without
any problems, of course after following Gary's suggestion. But like I said I
had gotten the machine so I could use it while on my weekend job ( I spend
the whole weekend there.) . The place has two phone lines , one is private (
for the weekday staff.) The powerbook connected to the net without any
problems. But I could not use this line because it's private and the other
staff is always gone for the weekend. The house line has some restrictions on
it but all my dial up numbers are local. I was always getting the message
that the modem was not getting a dial tone. The phone works fine. The other
weekday staff has one of those small sony notebooks and he gets onto aol
without any problems. I don't what he's doing and he was gone by the time I
was trying to log on; won't see him till friday. Does anyone know what's
going on here?
TIA.

Sorry, nope. The player does have room for 4 AA's in the CD portion,

Re: Problem installing Asante FriendlyNet PCMCIA Card into PB1400

2002-08-12 Thread Cliff Rediger

Below find Asante's instructions to me when I had difficult getting my
FriendlyNet card to work on my 5300. Also included are the Asante Tech
Support numbers. They are very responsive and helpful. Good luck.

***

Sounds like you have a TCP/IP problem and are using OS/8.5.1 or OS/8.6.
Open the TCP/IP control panel, in the 'Edit' in the tool bar, select
'User
Mode and click on 'Advanced, close this box. Now in the control
panel
click on the 'Options' radio-button and in that next box make sure that
the
X is removed from the 'Load only when needed 'BOX'. This prevents
TCP/IP
being loaded until a program call for it, like Netscape
Communicator(tm),
which assumes that TCP/IP is loaded when it attempts to contact the
Internet.

According to a MacWindows article found on the web, there is a known
problem
with OS 8.5.x and 8.6 that causes network transfer rates to dramatically
drop after upgrading when AsanteFast 10/100 PCI cards or Farallon cards
are
used. OS 8.5 and 8.6 installer copies a file called Apple Enet into
the
extensions folder when you have one of these cards.

The Apple Enet is the driver for an Apple Ethernet card, and interferes
with
the performance of the Asante cards. Apparently all versions of
AsantéFast
10/100 PCI card is affected by this problem. The NIC-PCI may also be
affected, although the article does not indicate this card
specifically.

This problem includes time-outs and other strange performance and is not
related to the drivers in use with our card. The most likely cause of
this
is the SLPPlugin extension installed with the OS. We recommend that
this
extension be disabled in Extension manager and then the system
restarted.

Description:
After upgrading to Apple OS 8.5, network performance drops dramatically.
Transfer rates can drop down to 100 Kbytes per second in some cases. A
clean
install to a previous OS improves performance. If the computer is a
client,
the client only will experience network performance degradation. If the
computer is a server however, some or all of the clients may experience
a
decrease in performance due to the decrease in server performance.

Resolution:
To help resolve the slow performance on the 8.5.1 systems try the
following
procedure which includes the following steps:

Turn off the following in the Extensions Manager and then reboot the
computer.

Apple E-Net extensions
DNS Extension
SLPPlugin Extension
Personal Web-Sharing

An Apple TIL file (#24691) describes the new Mac OS 8.5 Network Services
Location (NSL) Technology. The NSL is made up of a Manager and a set of
plug-ins that gather data via particular network protocols such as DNS.
As
noted on the MRP, Mac 8.5's SLPPlugin (Service Location Protocol) and
DNSPlugin (Domain Name Service) extensions are NSL plug-ins. If you
have
Virex virus software running then you should either temporarily disable
it,
or get the upgrade version of Virex for OS 8.5. I believe the latest
version is 5.9.1. This will cause problems with the network.

If these items do not produce significant results then you may try the
following procedure:

Create a folder on the desktop and name it Old Prefs
Note the TCP/IP and/or MACTCP setting on paper, Then:

Move the following items to this folder:
AppleShare PREP
AppleTalk Preferences
ASLM Preferences
MACTCP Preferences
MACTCP DNR
TCP/IP Preferences
NOTE: Again it is suggested that you save the TCP/IP and/or MACTCP
address
information in an external file in the Temp folder or write that
information
on paper to speed the restoration of your Macintosh's TCP/IP settings
(if
this is necessary).

If this procedure does not help then try Zapping the PRAM on the system,
re-establish the parameters effected and then test.

Please call us if you need additional information or support, or please
be
sure to include all previous correspondence to your replies, thanks.

Best older QT for a 1400?

Fascinating. Yes, it makes me wish I had one of these hanging about in the
basement. If anyone comes across an available one, do please post the news.
Sometimes these sorts of machines are left in trash heaps at big places like
universities, but I didn't know of any the last time our U purged one of its
departments. It used to be an all-Mac campus; now, sadly, that's changing.

If you find a Laptop which just buzzes (instead of bonging) and then
throws garbage on the screen at start up, and doesn't start up, I can
fix it. That's a sign of corrupt EEPROM. Of course, you can't run
teh installer that writes teh EEPROM unless you can boot up the
machine. I bought some blank EEPROM chips and got them burned with
good code and they're in sockets, so they're fairly easy to replace.
Some 1 MB SIMMs will corrupt the EEPROM for some reason.

I mention this, because I'd hate for someone to find one and then
discard it thinking it is dead when it is easily fixable.

Oh, and there is a port on the side that looks like it is for a VGA
monitor, only hooking a monitor to it will kill the power supply.
It's just one diode, and the thing will still run off of battery
power (I think), so that's pretty easily fixable too, except that the
power supply (the internal bit) is a pain to get to.

Oh, one last thing. Let me reemphasize that the Outbound Laptop is a
fairly different animal from the Outbound Notebooks. The stuff I
wrote is about the Laptop. I don't have a Notebook.

I've not followed all of this discussion, and it would be great to
have one, but I did run across a link to an Outbound User's Group:

http://surf.to/outbound/

There doesn't actually seem to be any User Group to that link though.
The guy who runs the site is a former Outbound employee and he's a
nice guy who will answer questions and help out, but I've never found
any feature to allow members to converse amongst themselves. It
would really be more accurate to call it an Outbound Support Site.

My problem is the power connector on my 190 the psu is totally shot and i
need to replace it but the cost in the UK is silly so i have an old 150 mb
that is shot (nice big crack) can i take the power connector of this board
and solder it to the 190cs then use the 150 psu to power the 190cs, it does
not have to charge the batterys as my 3400 can do that .

any ideas

and help would be gladly accepted.

Victoria.

Are you sure the connector between the 2 is identical ? If not, dont
try it. It is likely (although I dont know for sure) that the
voltages required between the 2 different models are different.

If you need a replacement, you can probably find a 190 motherboard on
ebay for cheap.

I was always getting the message
that the modem was not getting a dial tone.

In your Modem control panel, try checking the box that says Ignore

Re: Getting 190 Up To Hyperdrive

2002-08-12 Thread James Greenidge

Greetings All:

DON'T use 3-in-1 oil on your 190's squeaky lid hinges unless you
want shorts and a new machine! Use a drop of liquid graphite. True
Value carries it.

I'm really confused now!!

I'd appreciate any recommendations for locales with the best
price/value for a new HD for my PB 190, and tips how complex an
operation changing HDs are.

Other World Computing has always given me good prices on memory and

Thanks for the info and savings!!!

I am currently using file sharing to backup files on my OS 9.1 1.2
gig (soon to upgrade) 6320 to my OS 8.1 PB 190 so I can stop using
my EZ-135 as a backup machine. I am using Simple Backup for backup
because all other free/shareware backup utilities out there are PPC
only, not 68k. Apple's File Synchronization control panels on both
machines crash and burn so I just don't use them. Any help would
be appreciated.

Download File Synch 2.2 from O.S. 9.2.1 from Apple Care in the main
Apple site. Does 6840s like FS 1.1 in O.S. 9.1.

one last thing; my file sharing is only one way via PB to 6320
because I don't possess nor have access to long lost OS 8.1 file
sharing files. If any one knows of an archive update source where I
can pick up OS 8.1's file sharing files I'd be most appreciative!

Make a download request on the forums at MacFixIt or MacAddict .

Mac Portable - Strange Card

2002-08-12 Thread KADaggett

This message written: Monday, 12 August 2002 19:54:32 PDT

Obtained my second Mac Portable today ($5). Inside I found an odd card.
In the PDS(?) slot was a card that said (Mac Portable 3mb RAM Card) made
by Sunland Micro Systems. It had no RAM card in the RAM slot on the logic
board and when I finally got enough juice in the battery to get it to
boot, it shows only 1mb RAM. The hard drive was toast (made a LOUD
squealing noise when it finally came on), but I swapped it with a known
good drive from another machine and it booted OK.

Any ideas what this card might be and how to put it to use?

Ken

Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.

Re: 190 cs

2002-08-12 Thread J. Ryon Lucke

Victoria--

It should be fairly straightforward to transfer the connectors from one mb
to the other. I've done some surgery of this order--you have to be careful,
but it can be done. My tools of choice are a 15-watt grounded iron (for
static electricity safety) from Radio Shack and the finest rosin-core solder
they carry, something in the range of 1.5mm diameter, I think (.032 here in
the US of A).

You will also need some method of desoldering the connectors from the mbs in
question. I would warn against desoldering braid, as it seems to require
high-wattage irons and usually leaves residue, but a solder sucker should
suffice, as will other more primitive methods like melting the solder on
both terminals and pulling _carefully_ until you get the connector free.

If you're not familiar with soldering techniques, you should be able to find
manuals at whatever the UK equivalent of Radio Shack is. Or just rope in a
techie friend of yours--I wouldn't try this if you're at all uncomfortable
with soldering. There's also a fair chance of destroying the board, so be
careful at any rate!

Best wishes,
Jesse

190 cs SCSI disk mode

2002-08-12 Thread J. Ryon Lucke

The internal HD on my 190cs is formatted using Silverlining 6.1, and when I
try to boot it into SCSI disk mode, it shuts down as soon as the HD drivers
load. It's not the disk mode adapter, 'cause it works on a Duo.

Any suggestions? I've already tried resetting the PRAM.

Bad screen or bad pram?? any ideas?

2002-08-12 Thread bob

I tried to get my portable (520C upgraded with Newer to PPC 167 running

OS System 8.5) going last night and it wouldn't show anything on the
screen.

So i tried zapping the pram , but i couldn't get it to do that, after
numerous tries i thought i was doing it wrong, so i held the
option-command=r-p and power key on. it didn't reset the prom but it
did show the screen. so i took my hand off the buttons and at the
bottom of the screen you could see the screen indicator go from bright
to dim and then you can't see anything on the screen.
OK, so i did this again but after awhile my hands got tired of holding
keys down, so i released the option+command+ r and the screen stayed
visible because i was still holding the power+p down. I then released
the power and the screen went dark.
I redid this and kept holding the power key and p down, after computer
loaded everything, i had it rebuild desktop and then attempted a
restart.
Still no screen. I tried running norton while holding power+p, but it
hung up about half way through.
I unplugged it and took batteries out, retried it--no screen.
I did this and left it unplugged last night, plugged it back in this
morning- no screen. You can hear it load and it does load everything
because i can hear the voice telling me so.
Has this anything to with the pram battery ? I know that the date was
off and it has been off before when the computer has set for quite
awhile.
It also has been setting plugged in for 12 hrs. but still no screen.
I was able to mount this on my desktop and run norton on it had a few
minor problems which were corrected but still no screen.

When doing the option+command+r+p, it won't do it or you can not hear
the restart chime.

I have tried this also.
PowerBook 500 series

1. Remove the AC adapter and the battery.
2. Let the PowerBook sit without power connected for 3 to 5 minutes.
3. Simultaneously press and hold Command-Option-Control-Power On for 5
to 10 seconds.
4. Reinstall the battery and, if necessary, reconnect the AC adapter.

any help appreciated.

Re: powerbook 3400c

2002-08-12 Thread THE ROCK

Actually I already tried this but to no avail. Very strange. I'm able to
log on using other phone lines except the one available to me on my
weekend job!

In your Modem control panel, try checking the box that says Ignore
Dial Tone. That should do it!

Re: Mac Portable - Strange Card

2002-08-12 Thread KADaggett

Thanks for the reply. However, I do have the service manual. Understand
about the memory issue for normal memory cards. However, this card is
in J12, which is labeled PDS. The connector is configured much like the
PDS slot of an SE (suprise).

In that slot it would have to have some special use. Something like an
automatic RAM disk, or some such?

It must need some sort of special driver as it is not seen by the machine
in a normal 6.08 boot.

Get a service manual, as there IS no PDS on a Portable. You may
not have the right sort of RAM (see below)
Paul

Upgrades RAM Expansion - 22
Note: Static and pseudostatic RAM expansion cards are available for the
Macintosh Portable. Static and pseudostatic RAM cards are not
interchangeable. The 1 MB RAM expansion card must be used with a static
RAM logic board; the 1 and 3 MB pseudostatic RAM cards must be used with a
pseudostatic RAM logic board.
1 Note whether the RAM connector has a notch. If it does, install a
pseudostatic RAM card.

2 If the RAM connector does not have a notch, install the 1 MB RAM
expansion card.

3 Plug the card into the RAM expansion connector. (indicates second one
from hard drive)

Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.
