Re: Powerbook 190

2002-08-21 Thread Georg Portenkirchner

Thanks for the information!
No there are no AA added to the serial number.
I found information on the 5300/190 repair programme on Apple's website.
according to that the programme last 7 years after the manufactoring has
stopped.
As that was in 1996 I still might have the chance to get it for free.
Have to talk to a Apple shop here.

Thanks for the help

If your 190 has AA added as a suffix to its serial number, it has
already
been through the recall for powering and other problems.

One of the fixes added in that recall was to replace the motherboard OR to
replace the power connector so that intermittent connections such as you
describe won't happen.

My 190s/5300s all have this AA and none of them have powering problems.
In
fact, they are completely trouble-free.

I believe the 190/5300 recall is long since over.

Hi Mad Dog,

first I will try if an Apple shop here will do it as part of the Apple
repair programme. If not, I will try that.
At http://www.macfaq.net/troubleshooting.html I found short instructions
how to take apart Apple computers.

Thanks Georg

Hello all!

As I am new to the list I don't know if you already talked about this, but
as I heard this problem occurs quite often. I got a Powerbook 190 that is
in good shape.
Only there is a problem with the powersupply. If I move the Powerbook and
the plug moves, the Powerbook gets of.
Is there a way to reapir this. Maybe there is a instruction page somewhere
in the net?

Thank you in advance

Georg

P.S.: Hope you understand what I wannna say cause english is not my mother
tongue.

This sounds like the AC plug on the motherboard is loose. If you are
willing to take your computer apart, it should be easy to fix with a
soldering iron and a bit of solder.

more Powerbook 190 questions

2002-08-21 Thread Georg Portenkirchner

Again thanks for all the answers!

There a re some more questions concerning the Powerbook 190:

- On the bottom the is a small switch with an arrow on it. Can someone
tell me what is it for and at which position it should be?

- On top of the screen there is a green light. It soemtimes gets on when
the Powerbook is shut of and afterwards I can' start it anymore. Mostly it
happens when it gets off because of the loose AC power connector. I only
can push the reset button on the back with having the backlight and time
changed.
May this happen because the battery doesn't work anymore or may the
internal battery be empty?

Thanks in advance Georg

When it is pushed forward this unlocks the floppy drive module which can then be
removed and replaced with another device (eg ZIP drive, extra battery).

- On top of the screen there is a green light. It soemtimes gets on when
the Powerbook is shut of and afterwards I can' start it anymore. Mostly it

I'm not sure about this one, I have seen it happen though, and I think it may be
battery related.

2002-08-21 Thread Remy Davison

Hi all

I decieded to test the battery for myself and see how it works in the 190cs

i set the monitor to 256 colours (The maximum for this book) and have so far
used the Mac since 10.25 am for word docs, email, veiwing photos, and light
web browsing.

It is still going strong and it is 1.07pm now

i will let you all know how long i got in total tonight
So the 3400 LiION worked in the 190, yes, Victoria? That's v-e-r-y
interesting.

Someone once asked me why they don't work and, correctly, pointed out
that the 190/5300s weren't ROM disabled to not recognise LiIONs, only
software disabled (i.e. only from 7.5.2, Enabler 1.1 or something).

I never got to try a 3400 batt in my 5300. But of course they won't
charge. But so long as they work, who cares?

Having both PBs is the advantage in your case. I think 3400 batts new are
pretty cheap now, right?

I'd be interested to know whether MyBatteryPPC recognizes the LiION.
This's quite a find you've made here. Which OS are you running? 8.1?
That's what our 190 ran [still runs in hands of new owner]. Pretty good
web browser on 24MB RAM + Netscape 4.08.

3+ hours on a 190/5300 is not_bad_at_all :-)

My Lombard batt is dead. Sigh. $130 for a replacement. *Deeper sigh*

Hi thanks for all that?

YES the 3400 l-ion battery runs my 190 for over 4 hrs on a full charge .

It was not recognised by the charge indicator and only 1 of the lines
flashed constantly with no time indicator either but it worked fine.

the os i am running on the 190cs is 7.6.1 i did not have the 190 psu
attached at all and i charged it in the 3400 fully before it was used.

i would be glad to show any list member in the UK North east that it worked
to prove to the list that it is not a trick.

You'll want to try Intelligent Battery Recondition by Apple - the
intelligence EMM circuit in 500 series batteries were prone to corruption,
rendering the battery unusable. Download from:

http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/Eng
lish-North_American/Macintosh/PowerBook/Other_PB_SW/

and put the battery in the right hand side compartment and run the app,
it should fix things so that EMMpathy can then do its thing too. If IBR
cracks the poo swear at it, rip the battery out aggressively, then jam it
back in with determination; 500 series batteries can be problematic and can
smell your fear. Show it who's boss and usually it'll give in. If not,
consider re-celling the pack. Unless of course you're made of money and
don't mind burning US$300 on 2 new packs

Re: 3400c Broken Latch

2002-08-21 Thread PeterH5322

In a message dated 8/21/02 8:08:12 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

... All that was left was removing the plastic bezel around the screen. Be
very careful doing that ... there are small clips all around the screen that
hold the bezel in place. They are easy to break, and, if you break one, the
bezel won't seat properly anymore ...

The latches are in the form of a tongue and a corresponding pocket. If the
pocket is damaged, which is often the case, it may be repaired by using a
special ABS plastic solvent-type cement: Ambroid Pro-Weld/Professional
Plastic Welder/For Styrene, Butyrate, ABS and Acrylic (Lucite or Plexiglas),
which is available from Ambroid, 61 Katie Road, Swanzey, NH 03446.

This stuff is quite different from the usual plastic solvent-type cements,
which are really intended just for styrene, and to a really poor job on ABS,
which almost all Apple plastic parts is made of.

To effect repairs, you reform the pocket to its original shape and then apply
the Ambroid Pro-Weld using a very fine syringe-type applicator. Capillary
action draws the solvent into the fracture. Slight pressure results in a
fusion-type weld that is actually stronger than the material itself.

The open time (the time you have to work the joint being repaired) is
quite short, but you DO have enough time to correct for slight misalignment.

I've repaired everything from broken PB case latches/pockets to a nearly 100
percent cracked Color LaserWriter case, all with great success.

Re: How can I make PB190 emergency floppy?

Dear Aydin.

I have an emergency disk for 190. The 190s need an 'enabler' with the
older OSes, I dont rember from when it was no longer necessary,
somebody on the list knew some time ago.

I have never used it. I got the Norton programme and created a Disk
Doctor start disk that I use regularly with the 190s. This keeps
everything in order and very stable. That disk is worn and I am going
to create a new one. I coud make one for you and send along with the
Apple emergency disk. Send me your address off-list and I can mail
it/them to you when I get the time.

(BTW, re 190 issues recently. I think the the 190 (b/w passive
screen) is the best palmtop in the world, runs 3 hours on its old
battery. One summertime trick is to sit in the sun and turn the
backlight off and type clever things in the back of the garden
sipping own-made elder-flower juice with ice (only adding the gin
just before knocking off!). This one can make idle the otherwise
beloved 1400c G3)

Re: Printer issues with 8.1

2002-08-21 Thread Aly

Okay, I've tried both of these suggestions, and restarted the machine after all
tries, and nothing's worked. I also tried putting the items in both the previous and
then the current system folders extension files (haven't consolidated yet) and
restarting, to no avail (my computer is using some things from the previous folder
and some from the current - messy!). I put them in where all the rest of the
printers that show up in the Chooser are hanging out, and they have the same type
chooser extension, yet the Chooser is still not seeing them.

Honestly, having never had to re-install any sort of printer on a Mac since about
1984, I'm still stumped. This is one of those things that makes me realize I've huge
gaps in my knowledge, and that I need to learn a bit more patience. I've only been
back with this newer Mac a bit over a year, but do love it dearly and forever.

I'll keep trying to figure this out and go back online and download the drivers
again, in case I messed that up somehow... I know it will just take some more
figurin' time. Luckily, no papers due yet... ;-)

What I am wondering is if Apple expected when someone was either buying a system with
8.x new on it or upgraded, they were also getting a better printer and tossing their
trusty old StyleWriters.Whoops! Not me!

(Gosh, maybe I'll make a plea to my dad to borrow his Epson 1200! ha!)

Thanks for the help. I'll keep at it and you all will hear a whoop of delight if I
get it figured out.

BTW, loved the disco story. LOL!

No there are no AA added to the serial number.
I found information on the 5300/190 repair programme on Apple's website.
according to that the programme last 7 years after the manufactoring has
 stopped.
As that was in 1996 I still might have the chance to get it for free.
Have to talk to a Apple shop here.

Sorry. The RMA program ended the begining of June this year.

Re: Emmpathy?

2002-08-21 Thread b e n w e l l s | headwerkx

I'm a PB newbie. Just what is Emmpathy? Do I need it for my Duo 280?

EMMpathy is a utility for fixing the EMM circuit on 500 series intelligent
batteries, which is susceptible to corruption and can make the battery
impossible to charge. EMMpathy's own documentation makes no mention of Duos
and considering the Duos are an older line they use the earlier dumb
battery packs and thus have no use for EMMpathy.

If your battery seems to hold very little charge, which is likely given its
age, an app like BatteryAmnesia might be able to recondition the battery by
removing the nicad memory effect over several software-controlled battery
drain sequences. This helped out my g/f's PB150 battery a fair bit.

Ben.

1400 Trackpad/Cursor Woes

2002-08-21 Thread Richard Peel

My 1400 (OS 9.2) seems to think I'm clicking and dragging almost constantly
when all I'm doing is moving the cursor (same thing happens with an external
mouse attached). It sometimes freaks out and thinks I've pressed the button
a dozen times when I only press it once and sometimes it doesn't register me
clicking at all.

Any ideas ? I've tried all the tips off Apple's website - is my only hope a
clean re-install of OS 9 ?

HELP!!!! 3400c won't start!!!!

2002-08-21 Thread jamie Scruggs

Howdy,

It's me, the guy with the broken latch. I want to first say thank you to
everyone that has responded to my previous problem. It sounds like something
simple to fix and I will probably fix it for sure after I get this major
problem resolved. On with the show.

Ok, here is the deal. I was surfing the net last night with no problems. I
shut my machine down the correct way with the power button and went to bed.
I got up this morning went to work and came home to my beloved 3400c. I lift
the lid and pressed the power button..nothing. So I went about trouble
shootingI tried starting it with the keyboard reset configuration or
what some call the vulcan death grip. That didn't work. Next, I pressed the
reset button on the back, that didn't work. I unplugged and plugged the
battery and power cable, that didn't work. I opened up the machine to check
to see if the keyboard came loose, it didn't. I checked to see if the RAM
had came loose, it didn't. I plugged a keyboard into the adb port, that
didn't work. So now I am at a loss.

Fortunately I have another computer that I can use to get online with. I
hope someone can point me towards something that I haven't tried yet.

Thanks,
Jamie

It's likely an extension conflict somewhere, that is keeping the finder

Mine just started to do this too, I've recently added a handful of things

Turning RAM Disk into Start-up Disk?

2002-08-21 Thread James Greenidge

Greetings:

The Battery Tips file in my PB 190 recommends creating a RAM disk
as a startup disk to knock down running the hard drive all the time, as
well as use mostly text editors over word processors to kill constant disk
access. I know how to create a RAM Disk of course, but what's the minimum
required files needed to turn it into a startup disk and is it really
that effective?

Thanks all!

 How about using the PCMCIA
like slot in the left battery compartment?

IF you're looking deep into the compartment to see it, you need the
PCMCIA adapter, comes in three varieties model A, B, and C.

If you have the adapter already (IE you've got two slots on the side of
the thing) all you need is the PCMCIA adapter software from Apple, and
any 16-bt card with a mac-compatible driver will work. This includes
flash adapters (no software needed) many modems, some ethernet adapters,
and allegedly wirelss cards like the orinoco silver, though I've yet to
be able to get mine to work properly on my 540C.

The adapters are available, and you'll need the model C if you ever want
to upgrade to the powerpc CPU upgrade (and they're priced accordingly),
but if you're not, the A or B models will work. The B model is better
than the A, as it fixed some bugs.

Re: HELP!!!! 3400c won't start!!!!

2002-08-21 Thread jamie

I think I just read somewhere that someone had a similar problem and the
cause turned out to be the power module. What is a power module, I'm not
that familiar with the inner workings of my Power Book, is that like the
power supply in a desktop computer? How difficult would it be to swap out?

About the previous fix by resetting the computer, I tried holding the reset
button in for about 45 seconds then reinstalled the battery and the power
cord and that didn't work. I repeated the procedure about 3 or 4 times, so I
don't think it's a pram problem. So I don't know what else it could be.

Thanks,
jamie :)
