Assuming your RAM card's seated correctly, try putting a space in front
of RD so it loads earlier. As a CP in OS 8/9 (IIRC), it loads later as a
CP. See how it goes elsewhere in the boot process (can't hurt).

Just to second this, I am fighting with an adapter cord for a 5300 that is shorting
out at the plug near the computer. It is the wire, not the plug. It makes good
contact with some
positioning but is a pain in the neck. I might try to make it again work.

Yes, they were OSX updates. I'm going to try again in
a few minutes (high speed access). And I'm going to
copy twice - once to the HDD partition and the second
time to a Zip disk. You're probably right about
Stuffit deleting files. I changed the settings.

Didn't see the start of this but there is an OS option somewhere to "Restart

restarts as soon as you try to shut down that might be your problem.

Stumped! 5300 and Ram Doubler

2002-08-29 Thread c d

I'm totally stumped. My 5300c simply refuses to work with Ram Doubler. It
has its stock amount of real RAM (16MB soldered in), an upgraded HD (IBM
1GB), no PC cards, running MacOS 8.1. Whenever I try to install Ram Doubler
(version 8.01 or 9.01, or 8, or 9) I get a "bus error" immediately when
starting up. This is when the MacOS screen comes up, before any
extension/control panel icons show up. I get the bus error if no other
extensions are loaded EXCEPT for Ram Doubler. I get the bus error if I load
ALL extensions, INCLUDING Ram Doubler. Funny thing is, if I turn virtual
memory ON (built in Apple Control Panel) and have Ram Doubler loaded at the
same time, the computer will boot fine and it will tell me Ram Doubler
cannot load because virtual memory is active (turn it off!) I've tried
loading a clean system installation with all the extensions on/off, no luck.
I KNOW other people must be using RD with their 5300s - any ideas? I ran
TechTool Pro (latest 3.0.7 version) and everything checks out fine. Same
for Norton Disk Doctor.

So I'm assuming you upgraded it to G3 by putting a
3500 MB in it? So you have a basic 3500...??

Sounds like it could be a bad PRAM battery. A weak
PRAM will often casue startup problems, and can keep
it from starting up entirely. ...Of course, it could
be more serious, but I'd start here.

As Gary had suggested previously, unplug it and take
the battery out of it. Then, push in the reset button
on the back and hold it depressed for any length of
time over 1 minute. I usually hold it in for about 2
minutes. Next, leave the battery out and plug the
unit back into the AC Adapter. See if it will start
up on AC without the battery in it. If it's the PRAM
thats causing it, this will likely get it to boot. If
this works, you should look to replace the PRAM soon,
as you may have to keep performing this ritual
occasionaly to keep using the PB until you do. I
found it helpful to power on my PB every day adn never
let the battery run all the way down (so it could
supplement the PRAM with power). Before I replaced my
PRAM, that helped me limp along...

Cheers,
Sionnach

I've been using Iomega Driver 6.0.6 with my 190cs and a VST Zip drive I
bought on eBay. Is that what you've tried? I got it from Iomega's web
site and I believe it was the latest driver when I downloaded it about
six months ago. The Zip Tools, etc. that come in the package with the
driver don't seem to run on a 190, only the driver. If you can find a
copy of "Iomega Web Release 5.51" (no longer on the web site, I'm pretty
sure), the Zip Tools with that will work with the driver above. If you
don't get a working copy of Zip Tools I think you can use the Finder to
format Zip disks anyway.

I'm using the original System 7.5.2 (with the Appearance extension and
some other stuff added) on my 190, in case you think there might be an
incompatibility problem with whatever OS version you're using.

Re: The Disappearing Files

2002-08-29 Thread Andrew Kershaw

Are you sure that they finished downloading completely before you
deleted them?
Sometimes interrupting the download will cause the browser (or your
download manager) to automatically delete the incomplete file...
Probably not what you wanted to hear, but I can think of no reason why
any file would just disappear when you put the 'book to sleep.

The other possibility is that Stuffit was interrupted while
decompressing the files, AND you had Stuffit set to "delete originals"
in the prefs... Or the files could be corrupt...

On second thought, nevermind, I don't really know what I'm talking
about. ;-)

(Aren't .dmg files disk images for use in OS X? Out of curiosity,
what software were you downloading? Also, only the very latest
version of Disk Copy - 6.3.3, 6.4? - will work w/ .dmg files in OS 8/9)

Peace,

PB 190 & VST Zip drive

2002-08-29 Thread J. Ryon Lucke

Anybody have drivers that'll see this drive so I can use it normally?

In the absence of drivers, I have to make sure the PB has a Zip disk in the
drive while it's booting in order to use the drive. Iomega's drivers can't
see the drive, VST says it's not compatible with the 190, despite the fact
that the drive says "For use in Apple Powerbook 5300, 190..."

Even Silverlining, the only disk utility I've found that can see through the
PB's IDE buses, doesn't like the drive.

I'd love to be able to use this drive normally, and I'm also a bit concerned
about corruption due to using improper (ie, non-existent) drivers.

Thanks,
Jesse

The Disappearing Files

2002-08-29 Thread George Mogiljansky

Hi,
I dl'd some .dmg files in .bin format from Apple's
site.
It seems that upon putting the PB 3400 to sleep, the
files that were still compressed disappeared. The

to see if they were there before sleep mode, and they
were or so I thought. I suspect Alladin is at fault.
Norton Disk/File recover does not see them.
Don't want to do this again.

Wallstreet battery, again

2002-08-29 Thread Andrew Kershaw

Well, I did a quick Google search for "PowerBook G3 battery" (seeing
if someone has taken one apart). I found a bunch of references to
"PowerBook G3 Series Battery Update 1.0" from Apple. The software is
no longer available (only thing close to that is "Battery Reset 2.0."

Well, here's a story...

I ran Battery Reset back in the day (last september or August, anyway)
when I noticed my battery acting up. You know the story - battery
doesn't hold charge, doesn't charge in bay, etc. The typical response
is to use Battery Reset. Well in my case, Battery Reset nuked my
battery. While it used to show up, it never charged (or didn't
charge completely, anyway). After running Battery Reset, the battery
didn't even register any more. Battery Reset would still recognize
it, but only after a long delay... The OS would have nothing to do w/
my battery. What's more, the little green LED that used to tell me
how much power I have didn't work AT ALL! No little flashing light
saying "recharge me", no steady lights indicating charge left in the
battery. Nothing. No lights.

And that's the way it stayed (for nearly a year). Today I downloaded
Battery Reset again. I noticed from the Read Me that "Battery
Updater" is supposed to be installed in the Extensions folder. I
looked in mine, no extension. So I re-installed Battery Reset.
Restarted, ran the reset app. Now the battery is recognized by the
powerbook and the 1st LED lights up saying that I have a minimal
charge (not the flashing recharge warning), but the PowerBook won't
recharge the battery. Curiously, the Battery Updater extenion was
still not installed in the extensions folder. So I manually installed
it (with TomeViwer) and restarted. Now the 'book thinks the battery
is permanently in the bay (even if I eject the battery) and still
won't recharge it (though the 1 LED still comes on when I push the
button on the battery). If I take out the battery, the 'book still
thinks it's in the left bay. If I put the battery in the right bay,
the 'book doesn't notice, still stubornly thinking it's in the left
bay.

Sheesh. What's up here? Anyone have a clue? I thought my battery
was toast for the longest time, only to have it start (sort-of)
working again...

I'd love to hear suggestions or fixes (if anyone has the PowerBook G3
Series Battery Update software, I'd love a copy). I'd even like to
hear if other people are having difficulty w/ their
Wallstreet/Lombard/Pismo batteries. I suspect this problem is more
widespread than Apple admits (and judging by the complaints I have
seen around the web and on the Tech Suport forum on Apple's support
site)

Oh yeah - OS 9.1, Wallstreet 233 series II.

Peace,
Drew

Wallstreet battery take-apart?

2002-08-29 Thread Andrew Kershaw

Anyone ever taken apart a Wallstreet LiIon battery?

I peeled back the two plastic stickers (on top and on bottom)... I
dunno, for some reason I thought there might be screws underneath.

Anyway, I found that the bottom of the battery had lots of long cracks
lined up with the spaces between battery cells... One of these cracks
looked like it had in one spot been melted through... Could normal
battery heat have melted the plastic, or is there something more
sinister going on here?

Also, has anyone actually fully taken the battery apart? Mine is
dead, and I was wondering if I could replace the LiIon cells with
exact replacements.

Peace,
Drew

Thanks to all for your advice, and help getting the 8.1.2 update: all is
now well though it took a while. Even with the update no applications would
run with Speed Doubler installed, but as I was about to turn the floppy into
a coaster the Norton Tools CD that I'd just bought arrived, and the
Antivirus found and corrected an infection (on the locked commercial disk,
is nothing immune?). So I installed and updated the program again, and now
it seems to be working fine.

Hi listers,
Can I use the same ac adapter, interchangeable, for pb 3400 or 1400 since the shapes
and output watts (45) are the same?

Re: powerbook 3400 Please help

2002-08-29 Thread Gary D. Adams

You say it doesn't start up at all. Is this on A/C or battery? Does it
make the startup chime? Have you reset the Power Manager?

The first thing I would do is reset the Power Manager. Unplug it from
A/C, pull the battery, and depress the small reset button right beside the
ethernet board in the middle of the back of the machine.
