Re: Older Software for Older PowerBooks
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Wed, 4 Sep 2002 12:15:06 -0400 In CAD, I really don't know. My father in law uses AutoCAD pro at his work and wants me to learn it for a possible job in the future. I am pretty sure AutoCAD is Windows only, any suggestions on Mac Cad software? I am shocked and *sigh* truly saddened that no one mentioned good olde MacDraft. I have used it for all kinds of things ever since I had my old Mac Plus, and it's so intuitive you don't even need the manual. Go with Version 4.1, which is not just the best but will run on any type mac. For that matter, MacDraw is still usable for simple things. If you're doing printed circuit boards, Osmond is excellent. It's still in beta so it's still free. And there are 68K, PPC and OSX versions. Don't let the beta-ness scare you though, I've designed two boards with it so far and it's solid--unless you give different signals identical names. But it keeps the drawings stored in a human readable text file, so you can edit your way out of the identical signal name problem. Re: FAO - Jose/Re: HELP: PB1400 with Viking 56k PC-card modem
I had what I think is a similar problem. First the scenario: very long story, but here is the short version. I had two 1400s that wouldn't recognize the presence of the PCMCIA 56 K modem. Swapped a whole bunch of parts to test nada. Got frustrated and bought a third that worked OK. Verified that the three modems I had really did work. Played around with the first two doing something else. Then noticed they now worked recognizing the modem. Big question, what was it that made the modems recognizable?? Only two things that come to mind. The last time I swapped the card cages, maybe I seated them better. Easy to check, just put one finger tip in the card slot and push down. I also reset the PRAM from the keyboard, versus the reset switch on the back. Maybe someone could confirm this works for them. Regards, Phil -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Russell - Unknown1 - Idaho USA wrote: 'frustratingly complicated' doesn't that just sound like a 'required specification' for work? :{) I think I will need something that will export to an autocad-type file, maybe something like GraphicConvertor can do that? No. Graphic Converter ONLY deals with raster formats: gif, pict*, jpeg, etc (for a list of about 50 file types!) Files that have a set resolution, and are all variants on bitmap files. Autocad deals with *vector* files; the main interchange type is DXF. But, fear not, Thorsten Lemke (author of GC) also makes Cadintosh, which does export to DXF files, and is, in fact, a rather slick little CAD product, that for $32 is a steal. http://www.lemkesoft.com However, in the long run, if your goal is to learn *Autocad* in particular, rather than CAD in general, you have no real choice than getting a PC with Autocad. (Big $$$) There are Mac programs that compete (and compete rather well) with Autocad in functionality, the deal with Autocad is learning the interface. And there you really don't have much choice; the 'No Macs!' rule at Autodesk is reputedly handed down from On High: Autodesk will not make a Mac version of Autocad *ever* again. (the only Mac products they sell, in fact, are Discreet products, which were being done for the Mac before Autodesk bought 'em and even Autodesk can't ignore the presence of the Mac in film and video work) They tried, once, back in the lat 80's, to pawn off a stupendously craptacular port, expecting that all the Mac users would flock to it; they had their heads handed back to 'em on plates. ISTR that that singularly shoddy port lead directly to the creation of a number of their competitors, like Ashlar and Vectorworks. It's ppoor reception lead to the No Mac Port rule at Autodesk. *If you look at products like Cadintosh they advertise that they output to pict files as well. The Pict file format actually comes in two varieties: raster as well as vector formats. Some programs have greater or lesser functionality with the two; raster pict files are more portable, in the cross-platform sense. -- Bruce Johnson University of Arizona College of Pharmacy Information Technology Group Institutions do not have opinions, merely customs -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I can't quite tell where pin 3 goes... Anyhow, a lot of the resistors I mentioned before share pads, FWIW. It's just a hunch, but I don't really see any other cluster of resistors... Re: 5300 bus speed...
Dan, Oh yeah, I've got them side by side alright! ;-) The differences are very subtle. A few resistors missing on one but not on the other... That type of thing. There is one very obvious difference (besides RAM on the mobo, that is), though: The CS has this little blue wire connecting a pin on Q9 (an 8-pin IC just north of the PDS connector) and a solder pad of one of those great big honkin' block capacitors at C54. C54 is south of the western edge of the PDS connector, if anyone else is looking... Maybe that's just on my CS. I know it had been through the REA twice, maybe it's got something to do w/ the famed mobo difficulties in the series? The CE doesn't have that wire. Some of the other things I've noticed I already emailed to the list in one of my other posts... As for pictures, yeah, I'd love some too. Wanna give me a digital camera? ;-) Peace, Drew PS: if anyone is wondering about my funky reply style, it's because I'm in digest mode and I'm cutting and pasting replies from the maclaunch website... Thinking about it a little while, I think these 8 resistors are the ones that I need to be concerned with... Resistors:R43|R46|R47|R48|R50|R127|R128|R129 100MHz (3.0x) X | | X | X | ||| X 117MHz (3.5x)| X | X | | | X || X In this case, an X indicates that a resistor _is_ installed at that location. That would mean that the resistors on Mad Dog's site match up w/ the 5300 series in a fashion something like this: (R9,R2)=(R50,R128) (R6,R5)=(R47,R129) (R8,R7)=(R43,R48) (R4,R3)=(R46,R127) Of course, there's room for a lot of trial and error here to work out the 1.5, 2, 2.5, and 4x settings... Re: Orinoco cards and 1400
A success report: I'm all hooked up with a Netgear MR-314 and an Orinoco Gold; I've not tried tuening on encryption yet or anything but I have TCP/IP working fine. I'm not sure which firmware is on the card, I might have to put it in a PC to access that info, although I thought I saw it once I don't see it available now. I was sort of hoping that I'd have troubles as others here mentioned, since I knew for sure that the Orinoco card would work in my Newton Messagepad, and thus I could justify getting 2 wireless cards... but since this works in both the laptop and the Messagepad I will put off the second card for a future purchase. Brian I am looking into 802.11b, there were a few posts here recently about problems with the Orinoco cards and the 1400, here's what their tech support said about it: The 1400's need to use version 6.04 drivers from ftp.orinocowireless.com/pub/software/IEEE/PC_CARD/APPLE/v600/. The 7.2 drivers aren't going to work it due to the lack of standard PCI architecture on this model. This is the same issue with making it work with AirPort drivers. I emailed back asking about firmware revisions of the card (what if you have the most recent firmware possible, will it still work with the older drivers, would be a useful question to have answered) but have yet to receive a reply. As far as firmware goes, anything between 6.08 to 8.10 should be OK. I have not tested 8.42 or heard reporte yea or nea on this. New cards are appearing with 7.28 or 7.42 out of the box, so a mod should be unnecessary. The customer would need a windows PC to accomplish a firmware update anyway. Make sure any previous attempts at 7.2 are uninstalled after being removed from the extensions folder, before setting up the older drivers. Also, encryption can be a source of frustration. The AP must NOT be using a shared key authentication method, (open auth / static WEP only). Also there often are passphase or friendly key input hashing routines on these AP's. Make sure the customer gets the network equivalent hex WEP key and applies this to the card profile. To firmly rule out any encryption issues, remove encryption in case there is trouble. -- -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: 5300 bus speed...
Mad Dog, Thanks for the help, but that number wasn't listed in my hard print catalog, nor in the searchable catalog on the Digi-Key website... Search for this term: SE2849CT-ND If it helps at all, the part is about 10x5mm with the solder pads forming a square 5mm on a side. The closest part to that I can see is SE2848CT-ND (33.MHz part). What do you think about replacing it with SE2849CT-ND (36.000MHz). Thats the part. You ought to be ok. That will raise the 100 MHz CPU to a speed of 108 MHz. That's Epson Electronics part #SG-636PCE 36.000MCQ (Also, a 38MHz part on the CE board will give me 133MHz... ;-) Think I could get that w/ a little thermal grease under the heatsink?) Did apple use the crappy corrugated heat pad on the 5300 ? IF so, replace it with a better heat pad. I took apart the CE and CS again to compare mobos... There are some *subtle* differences (besides the missing 8MB RAM on the CS, which is pretty glaring). Between the CPU and oscillator, there is a row with 5 resisitor positions labeled R46 - R50. Immediately to the right of the oscillator are R127, R43, and R44. On the bottom of the boards in the same place (beside the oscillator) are R126, R128, and R129. R45 is off to the left near the trackpad/sleep actuator connector and is set on both mobos. R#: 43|44|46|47|48|49|50|126|127|128|129 :: Resistor position CS: --|--|OO|--|--|--|OO|---|OOO|OOO|--- :: 5300cs 100MHz mobo CE: OO|--|--|--|OO|--|OO|---|---|OOO|--- :: 5300ce 117MHz mobo OO or OOO denote an open position -- or --- denote a closed position That might be it. Go to motorolla and dload the docs on the 603 and see if the PLL pins trace out to those positions. So the CE and CS mobos have R44, 47, 49, 50, 126, and 129 in common. I should point out that I'm no good at tracing circuits (never learned how, exactly), so I have no idea what these resistors are connected to, but it seems they are connected to the oscillator. There are 4 pins on the CPU that determine the setting. Anyway, maybe that gives you or someone else some ideas about changing the CPU multiplier... Do these early 603/NuBus based machines support bus multipliers? Can you, say, set the bus to 1.5x the oscillator's frequency like you can on late model PowerMacs/Books? Normally, yes, you can change them by adding or removing resisitors that connect to the 4 PLL pins on the CPU. For example, see: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/gionpeters//PB1400/PB1400.html Scroll about 1/2 way down the page. Peace, Drew Mad Dog -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: 5300 bus speed...
not that is affects your 5300, but there's a link in the archives from about a month? ago, to a site that has pictures etc of the 1400 and where/what a guy used to chip it up a little bit. the page itself had info on how to repair the CD drives by adjusting the focus of the laser beam, and that was the context in which it came up on the powerbook list IIRC. http://mywebpages.comcast.net/gionpeters//PB1400/PB1400.html but details there might apply to the 5300 since they are both non-PCI powerbooks. B The 5300 should follow the same principles, but I should mention I never found the PLL settings for the Duo 2300. Mad Dog -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: 5300 bus speed...
Brian, Yeah, that would probably be Mad Dog's site, eh? http://mywebpages.comcast.net/gionpeters//PB1400/PB1400.html Thanks for the tip; I looked around a bit, but besides general info, there wasn't too much I think I can apply (the 5300 and 1400 are very different beasts), though there is some. (Hey Mad Dog, you need to update the link to your website from AppleFritter - they still think you are on members.home.com) To everyone: (I'm confused about which is the 1st pin...) The oscillator looks a little like this from the top down: _*_*_ |o| * = solder pad |(| {Yes, the part has both the o and ( marks} |_ _ _| * * I'll call the pin closest to the o pin-1, clockwise from there to 4. 1 = OE 2 = Grnd 3 = Output 4 = Vdd ?? If that's true, then 4 is connected to R130 (can't read the label on the resistor, but it's blue), the directly to pin 30 (counting from the bottom left of the writing on the 603e) of the CPU, FWIW. I can't quite tell where pin 3 goes... Anyhow, a lot of the resistors I mentioned before share pads, FWIW. It's just a hunch, but I don't really see any other cluster of resistors... Wish someone could post pics of the mobo - I don't have a digital camera :-( Peace, Drew You want the resistors connected to the PLL pins on the CPU, not resistors connected to the oscillator. The two are (AFAIK) totally separate. To up the bus speed, just swap out the old oscillator and put the new on in its place. Easy as pie. Re: 5300 bus speed...
OK, Drew, you've got 117mhz CE and 100mhz C/S logic boards side-by-side . . . What differences do you see between the two? And don't say none, that you haven't got the CE board out because .blah, blah blah . . . : ) No good HW hacker is allowed any excuses! I have a dead 5300 mobo of some type (100 MHz CPU speed). THe interesting thing I noted is that there appears to be one set of pads for a VRAM module that is empty. Did lower models of the 5300 only come with 1/2 the VRAM ? Seriously, it ain't that hard to get down to that level of disassembly (as you've discovered of course) and a careful examination of the two LBs may well lead to you to the answer to the question of how to speed up a 100mhz 5300. What makes a CE go 117mhz?!? A bus to CPU ratio of 3.5, as opposed to 3.0 for the 100 MHz unit. Both have 33 MHz bus speeds. Hey, and how about a set of closeup pics of both, since yer in there anyway? Hmm, and I wonder . . . is a 1400/117/133/166 603e _processor_ the same footprint as a 5300's? Yes. You could transplant one. I hope to (soemtime) transplant a 180 MHz 603 into a Duo 2300, but I am not brave enough. The pins are just too damn tight. Re: QuickTake 150?!?
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Thu, 5 Sep 2002 21:16:59 EDT Subject: QuickTake 150?!? I saw a little bag at the bottom of one box; thought it was empty, but on further inspection it was something inside it ... a VIDEO CAMERA?!? Well. no, it was actually a Digital Camera, from A LONG, LONG time ago! IT IS HUGE by today's standards... It's called a Quicktake 150, and as U can tell I did not know Apple made anything like this... So I have a few questions: 1. (I found some info at the mothership (apple.com)) and it seems that U can either use an optional AC adaptor, OR an AC adaptor from one of the powerbooks: Optional AC adapter (use only the QuickTake AC adapter M2851LL/A or the Macintosh PowerBook AC Adapter M4662LL/A ...anyone know which one this is? I have a 100, 145b, 210-280c, and a 520c, SO I KNOW IT WILL BE ONE OF THE OTHER ONES(!) ;-) The one from the 145b should work just fine. 2. Anyone know where to find some software for this thing? The mothership does not have it available anymore... Contact me off-list and I'll get you the disk images. Do you want Mac or Windows software? 3. I heard that U CANNOT use AA alkalines in this thing... WHAT?!? You can, they just won't last very long. The 150 really eats batteries, hence the recommendatio to use the Lithium ones. john -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Damaged Apple 45W Power Adapter
Hello PB listers: My Apple 45W Power Adapter wire is starting to break at the point where the wire enters the plug that attaches to the back of the G3 Pismo. Can this be repaired, or do I need an entirely new Power Adapter? If I need a new one, where do I go? Dave -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... pb 100 probs
hi all here is me, a newbie to powerbooks and macs in general (my first mac was a IIci got on ebay for $20, i love and cherish it) I recently acquired a PB 100. As anyone should know, it came standard with a LEAD ACID battery (think car batt) that will die if left for a moment uncharged. anyhoo, the pb100 had HD problems from the start. I plugged in the ac adapter, pressed any key (had trouble finding that particular one), adn was confronted by odd noises. The usual chime came out the speakr, but there was an odd variety of clicking coming from the HD vicinity. I sounded sort of like ...CLICK click click click click... gradually fading off. the 100 did this for a while before it gave up and showed the insert disk icon. I unplugged the pb, connected the ext floppy (matching!), inserted a 6.0.8L (specialized sys6) boot disk, and tried again. THe 100 still checked the HD first, so the boot process was slow. But i got to the Finder no hitches. with the scsi probe control panel, i was able to see the make and model of the internal HD: conner 20MB. at least the firmware was there. but i couldn't mount the drive for the life of me. interesting tidbit: when I traveled to korea, i took the pb with me. i had an adapter for the plug tip, so i was able to play games from floppy. then one day the floppy spat back at me when i booted it. then the happy mac appeared. WTF? i got to the finder, and found the HD miraculously up and about, running 7.1 with some other apps. but the floppy drive no longer worked. at all. you know how all mac floppys are noisy? well it barely made any sound at all, just telling me its unreadable. when i tried to format the unreadable disk, it would stit it out with an error or the screen would go very dim and the mac would reboot. but wait there's more: when i returned to the states, the HD refused to work, showing same everything as before. but the FD was still broken. so now i have a pb100 with no drives and no batt. I have a few questions for the pb100 savvy: do you think this is some sort of PS thing, that fried the floppy and jumpstarted the HD? then what happened when i came back? is it possible to remove the HD and temporarily install it to another SCSI mac to read and maybe repair the drive? can I repace the FD mech in the ext case with another 1.4? thanks a lot, Alan -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: QuickTake 150
Optional AC adapter (use only the QuickTake AC adapter M2851LL/A or the Macintosh PowerBook AC Adapter M4662LL/A I've used the power adapter from my PB180 for this camera. Don't have it in front of me; can't say which model number it is. 2. Anyone know where to find some software for this thing? The mothership does not have it available anymore... Hmm, I've got it, can send it but got to dig it up first. E-me offlist if still interested. Quick random off-topic notes: 4 floppies worth, and weird segmented parts that aren't Disk Copy disk image .parts. In the past emailing them hasn't always worked, even when Stuffing and binhexing them. Installs some older OS pieces that still played nice with my Quadra 650 running OS8.1. Uses a printer cable of course. Camera shows up on the Desktop via a control panel. Once you make an alias you don't need to access the Desktop to mount it. Mine gives pretty crappy pictures (640X480 resolution only). 3. I heard that U CANNOT use AA alkalines in this thing... WHAT?!? Yeah, I remember something of that. Shove 'em in there anyway. -David -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... SCSI Bus number question
List-ites: I use Lacie Silverlining to format my HDs. I got ahold of a new HD tonite and noticed something different. Every one of my HDs are in(?) SCSI Bus0 ; have no idea why; but it is all I have ever seen. So now I get this new drive, and it is set to SCSI Bus 1 Okay; I finally realized that this is NOT the same as the SCSI ID#; so what is it, how can I set it to SCSI Bus 0 ; and DO IT EVEN NEED TO? I said I'd do it tonight, and it's still tonight where I am!!! 11:40pm, but it still counts! I put up a page detailing what I've found so far w/ the 5300. If you've been following my saga, you probably won't learn anything new. But there are some pictures I've posted that Dave Ip was kind enough to provide! Go take a look! http://homepage.mac.com/projects/5300/5300oc.html I don't know how long this stuff will stay online... I haven't yet paid my $50 to keep my .Mac account (don't get me started) and haven't yet decided if it's worth it to me. So if you want this stuff, you'd better grab it - who know's how long it will stick around. Peace out good night!
