Heh lets just see who has a PC Card Cage, let alone a CompactFlash card.
The 500 series PC Card things are pretty much non-existant. I've only
found one store on the entire internet that even mentions them, although
out of stock and when I emailed him about them, he said something
ignorant like would you use it for USB expansion and I'm thinking do
you even know what you're talking about?

How many of you Blackbird owners also have the PCMCIA expansion module? Do
you use a PCMCIA/ATA CompactFlash card adapter and boot your PB from it? do
you notice battery savings/speed gain versus using the hard disk?

For practically nothing, do you mean like that?

My company is closing shop and has probably a dozen used 190 PB's

Random Notes from the List Mom

2003-02-23 Thread Dan Knight
It's a sunny, chilly February day in Michigan. Some of the snow is slowly
melting. And I'm as caught up with the last 7-10 days worth of list
messages as I can be.

Due to some configuration changes (specifically changing the IP address
of the server itself), I've missed all list messages from sometime
Thursday morning until earlier today. I don't know what's been going on
on the lists, and one of the nannies is sending copies of several digests
to me. Once I receive those, I'll send out a plea for missed digests.

I'm working with the nannies to establish more specific policies on when,
why, and how we ban and/or block subscribers, deal with violations of
list policy, etc. If we decide to make these available to the public,
I'll send out a general announcement.

If you want to be unsubscribed from a list, change to digest mode, or
change your email address -- and the list server is uncooperative --
first check that you are using the same address you used to subscribe. If
it still doesn't work, be sure to mention the name of the list(s) you
want updated.

BTW, there is no automated process for changing your email address.
Subscribe from the new address, confirm the subscription, wait for
messages to start coming in, and then unsubscribe from the old one. Once
our own list server software is up and running, this and other things
will be much easier to do both via email and using a browser.

We are offering $6/year email addresses at lemlists.com, which is not run
on our very own server. The server is hosted by Coleman Web-Internet
Services, and Ryan Coleman is the system administrator. More details at
http:/lemlists.com/. These addresses are only offered to members of our
email lists.

We will also be offering email addresses, webspace, and other services
using the lowendmac.net domain shortly. We should even be able to handle
publication of iCal calendars and provide iTools-like access to your
storage space. More details on that soon.

Finally, there has been some question as to what is on topic and off
topic on our lists. If the question involves a computer covered by the
list, it's almost undoubtedly on topic. This includes getting software
and printers to work. If it involves politics, it's definitely off topic.
Let's try to stick to Macs and the programs we run on them and the
peripherals we use with them.

Thanks!

The usual cause of this is a corrupt AppleShare PDS file on the

harddisk. The cure is to use ResEdit or another utility to make the
file visible and then trash it. Next time you startup FileSharing it
will create a new version of this file. The AppleShare PDS file
contains all of the privileges for folders so trashing it will reset
 them.

Clark,

Thanks for the note. I should have said I tried *almost* all of Apple's suggestions
(of which yours was one). :-)

I actually first tried a less invasive method that Apple recommends. Here's what I
did (from Knowledge Base article 11368):

1. Open Stickies from the Apple Menu, open a new note (any note).
2. Type anything (as long as characters are there).
3. Select Export Text from the File Menu.
4. Name the file AppleShare PDS (capitalization not necessary, but the spelling and
the space is important).
5. Save the file on the first (root) level of the Startup Drive.
6. A dialog box will come up asking if you want to replace the file? Yes, you want to
replace it.

Note: If it does not prompt you to replace the file (step 6 above), then it didn't
work. Check the file name and saving destination.

Result: worked like a charm! File Sharing came right up.

Thanks again for your help!

Re: Powerbook 190?

2003-02-23 Thread Nick
Well, I would definately check those specs! 40 meg HD? That is extremely
small, and could barely hold 7.5.5! Actually, I don't even think it could.
My guess is it has 40megs free on the HD. Like John said run Apple System
Profiler on it. I am positive it was installed with 7.5.5, but just
incase. take it with you on a floppy. When you come back from checking
it, out please let us know what it does have.

Hope This Helps.
Nick

I don't know if it was included with OS 7.5.5, but it may be worth
starting
up Apple System Profiler on it... If it wasn't installed in 7.5.5, chuck
it
on a floppy and bring it with you. In the 'System Profile' tab, under
'Hardware Overview' it'll tell you the processor type, and the Motherboard
Model. (Along with all kinds of other stuff...)

As for the Price Tag, I'd talk them down a LOT before thinking about it if
I
were you... 8MB Ram, 40 Meg HD, sounds like it is going to have trouble
keeping up with even simple tasks without some kind of upgrade... $NZ250
is
more than that machine is worth, even if it IS a 5300... My 1400c/133 was
under $AU200 with 1.3 GB and 64 MB Ram.

  Subject: Powerbook 190?

  Hi,
I have seen a powerbook 190 in a secondhand store but I have one
question. On the top of the LCD screen there is a powerpc stamp. But
  as
far as I can tell the powerbook 190 has a 68040 cpu.
Could this have had its screen replaced or is something else up with
  it?
Its running OS 7.5.5 and has 8Mb ram and a 40Mb ATA HDD.

  Any help appreciated

Re: AppleShare PDS

2003-02-23 Thread David Deckert
...It just says File Sharing starting up and will stay like that
until the battery dies an hour and a half later, if I let it go that
 long...

The usual cause of this is a corrupt AppleShare PDS file on the
harddisk. This is an invisible file at the root level of any shared
 harddisk.

Wow, that's a new one for me; never saw that one before. Guess I've
been lucky to never have this go bad, but then again I have no opinion
on the Honda Asimo either. But a robot to get the paper in the morning
or mail--you know, like on the Jetson's (what was the robot maid's
name?)--can't be all bad. Heathkit made robots? I remember them as
cheesy stereo kits back in the day.

Anyway, AppleShare PDS is invisible for security perhaps? If so
couldn't someone just trash the Users Groups CP and Data prefs and/or
File Sharing CP prefs to delete user access?

ATA Hard Drives/PCMCIA slot

2003-02-23 Thread Ken Norris (dialup)
Fellow PB'ers:

Where can I find resources for external ATA Hard Drives that will plug into
the PCMCIA card port on a PB 1400c? I haven't seen any at lowendmac.com or
anywhere else, yet I've been told they exist. Is it just a matter of
adapters and power supplies?

TIA,
Ken N.

* OT: BTW, here's a clip from the Isaac Asimov home page:

Isaac Asimov was born in Petrovichi, Russia, in 1920. Petrovichi is very
proud of their native son, and have honored the place of his birth with a
memorial stone. A picture was supplied by Alexander Azimov, who is almost
certainly a relative of Isaac's.

I actually first tried a less invasive method that Apple recommends.

Double wow. This is one of those things that's too easy. Wouldn't have
thought a visible file could replace an invisible. Remind me tomorrow
to try and save a SimpleText document at the root level on my bosses
Mac at work and name it Desktop DB.

Odds are it won't let you as the Desktop DB files are always open IIRC.

But what if say, you were using OS 9, launched Sherlock and told it
look for AppleShare PDS (with the invisibles option checked) and then
trash it. That might be faster yet, or at least save you from having to
trash the new dummy file. Speaking of dummy files, we use this old
chestnut at work (not that anybody asked): The System Folders each have
a SimpleText document named Servers. Prevents guest users from
accidentally successfully checking the mount drive at startup when
logging in to other Macs.

Oddly enough you can't use Sherlock for this. It will find the file
but won't let you delete it.

We use the Servers file trick at my daughters' school. I think I've
used the technique for other things too as well as locking preference
files. Sometimes you have to use a folder or a de-linked alias so it
doesn't attempt to read from the file
