Re: Temperamental 5300c

2003-09-20 Thread The Calypso Organization
To cut a long story short we just acquired a superb 5300c. Or it was until I
tried to upgrade the OS.
First tried installing OS 8 over OS 7.5 from an external CD Didnt like this
as had to turn off all extensions to get it started. Then plugged in the HD30
and connected it to the PowerMac to clean the drive for a reinstall as by
this time it didnt even like the ex CD. Then loaded a complete OS 8 onto the
PB drive thinking to open it and run from there. Zilch.
Reconnected to PowerMac and tried to wipe it all out again but the Powermac
refuses to initialise the drive. All I can get anyhow now is the message .
This start-up disk will not work on this Macintosh. Use the latest
installer.
well. Ive completely run out of options - it recognises nothing and always
gives this message whatever you try- even to the emergency disk, so its back
to begging from the experts time.
Anyone had similar problems with reluctant 5300's., and how do I get it back
on course again!
Gerald

190/5300 displays

2003-09-20 Thread Beniamino Cenci Goga
As I learnt that the screens are interchangeable
between 190/5300 gray, color, acive or passive
matrix, now I would like to see whether I can
replace a dead TFT 5300 screen with a new one.

The problem is that the only good case I have is a PB 190 one.

The cable that connects the LCD to the logic
board is the same for B/W and color 190/5300
displays?

Don't think so - Apple list different part numbers for them.

Presumably this is a permanent fault ?and I was wondering as the upgraded

Any ideas would be very welcomed - was an expensive experiment! (despite the

Hello Gerald:

I've finally had a chance to look at this a little more carefully, but,
hopefully you have solved your problem by now.

I might be able to help, but I need to know all the details of how and
why you think you have damaged the daughterboard RAM connector.

Please email me off list if this is still relevant to you.

IIRC Cardbus is a newer 32 bit card type, the 1400 or 5300 used an older 16

Use v.42 bis. The MNP was an early compression standard developed by

Two suggestions:

1a. Drag the folder out of the trash. Use Sherlock to find it and put
it in the trash. I sometimes get an Item is in use and can't be put in
trash, do you want to erase this now? message.

2. Use File Buddy or another Finder helper program to erase it or
change the file or folder's settings to (basically) not inited.

3. Use a disk or hex editor to erase it.

Which file or folder is actually causing the problem? Is it visible or invisible?

Sincerely yours, Grizzlygiant

Try emptying the trash while holding down the otion key.

Going once, going twice, going three times!

I know that Dan and Gary both meant, hold down the option (alt) key
before and during emptying the trash. I should have said that too.

there is a small program called HELLFOLDER or something like that,
and you can try with creating a new folder and naming it with the
same name as the uneraseable one and then replace on with the other
by dragging it into the same place on the hd. and then throw away the
new one.

Start your machine with the extensions off and try it then. If it is
in use it is probably being used by an extension of some sort. The
other option is the file erase tool in the old Norton Utilities.

 Good luck

Kaleidoscope (shareware) allows an older OS to display complete pictures.
It can be downloaded at: http://download.com.com/ Search kaleidoscope .
David Allen
kaleidoscope uses a lot of processor and memory - it will
significantly slow down your mac, there is another application that
just puts a pic on the desktop and that doesnt alter the menucolour
etc, and uses up the same amount of ram as the desktop pic is big and
no more. But I can not for the life of me remember its name right now
- sigh - and I put old the old diskettes in the attic. Anyone ? It
was both ppc and 68 k and the name was not at all to do with desktop
pics or anything similair,

Conversely, try booting up off a System floppy or CD, then trash unwanted
items. Certainly an item in use won't be in use by then.
Zapping PRAM comes to mind also.

Hi again!

I've already tried most key combinations, and the rename trick.
They didn't work.
My best chance lies with File Buddy or HellFolder. I'll try the Sherlock
trick, too.
I'll keep you posted nd thank you all for your suggestions.
Best regards.

Decor is what you are looking for.
http://pauillac.inria.fr/~fpottier/decor.html.en

Supposedly, the OS 8 Appearance Control panel and extension (and
Desktop Pictures control panel) can be installed on System 7.5
(though I haven't tried it). It does work very well on OS 7.6.x,
giving that OS the more polished platinum feel of OS 8.

Peace,
Drew
