MP3's on pb's? Mac compatible Players?

2003-12-15 Thread H
Okay, I have a big problem. A few days ago "Santa"
overheard my husband on the phone talking to a friend
about how cool ipods and other mp3 players are.

I don't know a thing about mp3. What he wants is a
player to load all his old favorites -- all his cd's,
maybe a bit of vinyl. He doesn't listen to much of
anything new. (A few years ago I bought Peak LE
planning to turn his classic vinyl into CD's, I know
how to do that, although I never finished the
project.)

Okay, so I strated to research portable MP3 players,
and I wasn't too surprised to find out that very few
of them work with mac os 8.6. I'd like to know if
anyone on the list uses any kind of mp3 player with a
usb pc card (like a macally) on a powerbook, like a
2400, 1400 or a 3400 under 8.6.

I also need some help with the finer points of
creating decent mp3's. Is it better to create aiff's
then convert them to mp3's, or is it better to create
mp3's directly? Does anyone have any good
recommendations for a programs that can do this that
will run on a 3400?

Any help at all, any help whatsoever about mp3's would
be greatly appreciated!

Hmmm ...

Perhaps by experimentation or luck some additional chip selects (probably
*RAS) were discovered near the mobo's memory controller.

If so, then perhaps a way was discovered to route these to a 16 MB DRAM
card.

I notice that there are lots of unfilled resistor positions near that
chip, which is on the underside of the mobo.

Re: Can I replace individual keys on PB3400 keyboard?

2003-12-15 Thread Gary F . Daught
After a few tries I was able to get the keyboard fully functioning. It
appears the problem was in properly seating the ribbon cable into the
motherboard connectors. Pretty fussy!

I'd still be interested to know whether I can replace individual keys
on a PB 190/5300/3400 keyboard. Thanks.

5300cs battery/power question

2003-12-15 Thread Danny Jones

My 5300cs won't boot.

The power supply has been screwy for some years ever since I had the power
cord stretched across a path in the house and my wife came through chasing
the cat, and... well, anyway...

For some years now, the cord into the machine has had to be *just right* to
charge the battery. It hasn't been too bad of a problem. Whenever I saw
that the battery was draining, I'd play with the power cord in just the
right way until I saw that the battery was charging. If I had enough
battery to power up, I was okay. Actually, if the battery couldn't boot the
machine, I could play with the power cord until I heard the very faint high
pitched whine that told me the machine (and battery) was getting AC power.

I've been using the 5300cs less and less. When I tried to boot it this
month to get my Christmas card list, it was dead as could be. Could not
wiggle the power cord to get it to do ANYTHING.

I took the battery to BATTERIES PLUS to have it reconditioned and recharged.
They told me the battery was in good shape and would hold a charge. I
figured that would be enough to boot the machine, but still I get NOTHING.
:(

Someone suggested to me that I hold the reset buttion in on the back of the
machine for 15 or so seconds, but I get no response at all from the machine.

I could live without the machine, but I really, really want to get my
Christmas card info and genealogy info off the hard drive.

I figure the worst case scenario is that I buy a used, working 5300cs (I
think I've seen one somewhere online for $50-something) and swap my hard
drive into it.

Is there another way?

Thank you for any help you can offer.

The comment about adding an 'HCT02 and a R-C net applied to new build

Changing the value of the damping resistors is pretty "safe". You can
only increase the delay on account of the increased R and the parasitic
(and fixed) C ... unless you also add a discrete C, and the latter works
best when in a "clock chopper" circuit, which the 'HCT02 is but one
example.
The function of the discrete R is actualy intended to damp out "ringin"
in the *RAS (and also other signals where these appear in series).
*RAS is "row address strobe", and is but one of the several signals which
are employed to clock addresses and data into, and data out of the DRAM
chips. From the leading and training edges of *RAS and *CAS are generated
all kinds of clock signals internal to the DRAM chips.
*RAS (and/or *CAS) can also be used as a "chip select", which is I
believe the case here.
You have the tech info down pat. As such, let me ask you something.
I have seen a claim on a Japanese web site that someone was able to
rewire RAM modules to increase the max RAM to 80 megs. Does this
seem believable to you ?

Can I replace individual keys on PB3400 keyboard?

2003-12-15 Thread Gary F . Daught
Greetings. I just picked-up a replacement keyboard for my PowerBook
3400c as my old one has several worn keys. This one looks great, and
installation was a breeze. However, when installation was completed I
discovered the left SHIFT key doesn't work! Two questions:

1) The left SHIFT key on the newer keyboard does not appear to be
sticking or anything. What might be accounting for it not working? Is
there a way to try to fix this?

2) Assuming "no" to the above question, I would like to cannibalize
keys from the newer keyboard to replace the worn keys on my old one. Is
this an easy/doable procedure? I have replaced keys on desktop Mac
keyboards but have no experience with PowerBooks. Help is appreciated.

Memory for sale

2003-12-15 Thread Howard R. Katz
I've a friend who just migrated from the peecee world over to the Macs and
got himself a G4 titanium powerbook. This past weekend he upgraded his
memory from 256meg to 512k (or is it 512 to 1 meg?) and has the two 256
SDRAM modules pulled from his 'book available. These were used less than
a month, and he's interested in selling them, $35/module. If anyone would
like these, drop me a note offline. (s/h would be actual cost to get them
to you.)

Andrew Kershaw writes,

My PB is a 190 on OS 7.5.2. However, what I actually want the MP3 for is
my 7200/120. The reason I posed the question here is because not only am
I already on this list, but I see that my fellow PB owners here are using
OS 7.x to 9.x, as I am. My 7200 is on OS 8.1, which obviously falls in
this OS range, so I figured if there was a free MP3 player in this OS
range working for any of you guys on your PBs it would work for me on my
7200. I don't want to put MP3 on the PB because the PB is my portable
word-processor (I LOVE being able to go out to the park on a nice day and
write, or take it with me when I go away for a weekend and suspect I
might have "down time" to be able to write)...Any downloading or music
related stuff (right now I want a few Christmas carols to have while I
"twist" their lyrics around, hee hee) I'd do would be at home on the 7200.

Er, uh, well, thanks anyway. This (an MP3 player) is something I'd
consider nice to have, but isn't anything I'm so desperate to have that
I'd want to actually spend money on it -- I really only want it to do my
twisted Christmas songs.

I appreciate your reply.
