PB 520c screen doesn't work.
I aquired a PB 520c by chance, actually I bought a truck and it kinda came with it Anyway, I worked on this laptop before. Last time it was the video interface cable that went bad, I replaced it but the screen still didn't display video, just the backlight. It is still doing this, and now that it is my book I want to try to fix it. as far as I know the screen is fine. PB 1400 - how to unplug trackpad?
Hi, I would like to remove the trackpad of a 1400 as it seems to cause some problems. But how can I unplug it from the cable that I see after removing the keyboard, located right beside the harddisk? We converted a 520C to a 5300 by just swapping the board - so I think? the answer's yes they are identical. But others may confirm or deny I think you mean that you converted a 190c to a 5300 by swapping the motherboard. The 5x0 series and the 5300 have no identical parts, as far as I know. The trackpad mechanism itself may be swappable, but I'm pretty sure that it isn't. I believe the 5x0 series used a 1st generation trackpad, the 5300 a 2nd generation trackpad, and the 190, 2300, and 1400 all used a 3rd generation trackpad. The connectors on each should be unique. Anyone with a 5300 and a 500 series care to take a look? The buttons are different, however. I've never taken apart a 520, but I doubt it's button can be used in a 5300. My suggestion is that you pick up an entire PowerBook _190_ palmrest assembly on eBay or the Swap List and swap the assembly in your 5300 for it. The assembly should cost between $5 and $10. My 1400 just didn't have enough juice to run my Matrix screen saver and serve pages. Just use the Energy Saver screen saver that's part of the OS. I use some stuff that's in my VCR cleaning kit...I don't know what it is, but it cleans well, doesn't harm plastic, and leaves no residue. Thanks, Ken, I might try to clean the trackpad first. You think the PB wouldn't boot without trackpad? My interpretation of the problem is that the trackpad sends signals that confuse the machine. I'll try to describe it with my pidgin english. Usually the trackpad's key doesn't response if I hit it. So I connected a mouse. When I type a text (I usually use the PB for that purpose) anything works well for some minutes. Then suddenly the keyboard doesn't response any longer until I hit the trackpad's key. Then I might be able to type one letter and have to press the trackpad key again and so on. The machine begins to act strange. If I switch to the finder and move the mouse it has the same effect as if I would move the mouse while pressing the mouse key - any object within the mouse movement range is chosen. Impossible to type a text this way. So I thought to hell with the trackpad, I unplug it and just use a mouse instead of the pad. But that seems to be no solution (?) Or maybe that was my Pismo Either way, the part numbers ought to be the same for all of them as the design hasn't really changed in the last 10 years or so. FWIW, the Pismo's trackpad looks the same as my Wallstreet's - it has the same ribbon connector and everything. It does look like it's integrated into the palmrest, though, and not removable. replacement PB 150 floppy drive

I opened it up, and the drive is definitely beyond repair (one of the heads had snapped off, as well as part of the assembly it was attached to).
