Trying to get my PB1400 working on a wireless system. Thanks, Wayne Hi Wayne The 802.11a/b/g combo cards are not supported with the older PowerBooks under the Classic OS. Any of the Lucent WaveLan or OEM of Lucent will work well on your PowerBook 1400, with OS 8.6 and Oricono v7.2 software. However I do perfer a Farallon Skyline, or Proxim Skyline wireless cards for older Macintosh Powerbooks (pre G3). Their are servial different models of Skyline cards, but only a small number of them work with Macintosh. The software is much more Mac like than the Orinoco. See my Wireless FAQ for info on how to identify the correct Skyline card. Be sure to read my Wireless FAQ Troublshooting sections on the PowerBook 1400. It is my own expierence troubleshooting mine and my friends Powerbook 1400's. Can you reinstall the system? If so, place the system CD in the cd tray and hold the c key while you start up. It works on older Macs, but you would have to do a clean install of a new system. I think that the cd rom will work if you hold down the c key while booting. Maybe someone could enlighten us as to whether that will work on a G3 OSX. The shame of it is, when I bought it, I did not have the stock, full '040 processor in it. That would have been something to try out in my 540c w/ its stock LC68040... As far as the 183mhz goes, I bought a NuPowr 183mhz processor awhile ago; I GUESS it works at that speed, my ASP tells me so, as well as Metronome and other similar programs... Thanks, Craig W. Only if you have access to an OS X Server that is set up to do it. If you have another Mac with Firewire you could use a Firewire cable and target disk mode on one of the machines to boot it. Connect the machines (both shutdown) with a firewire cable. Put the panther disk in the optical drive of the other machine, turn it on and hold down the T key. This puts it in Target Disk mode, making it's drives appear as firewire drives. Now start the iBook and hold down the option key. This will bring up a selection of drives to boot from. Dan, does the CD-ROM drive not work at all? Though I've never done it, I do know that some recent Macs can boot off Fire wire. With it's cdrom not working, I am unable to startup from cd. I changed the subject line on this spinoff thread as someone should have a while back. So perhaps the one concerning the 1400 can continue. I'm interested the 1400 relevant wifi and tired of reading posts aimed at the other models. Forgive my ignorance here.
