The only thing I experienced with the card in at startup is that the
machine doesn't recognize the card.
It's been said by others that there are software "issues" with these
cards, things like crashes if you try to start or shutdown with the
card in place.

If you modify the card cage, then the Kanga will physically accept a
PCMCIA card, which is a prereqisite for accepting a USB or Firewire card.
The Kanga will take PCMCIA (AKA PC Card) cards already. It can be
modified to take CardBUS cards such as USB and Firewire cards. It's

Some USB 2.0 devices won't work at USB 1.1 speeds, so if you don't have
a USB 2.0 port and at least 10.2 it won't work. Some will. The specs
should say. Be aware, though at USB 1.1 speeds, you're looking at 2X
speed from the drive.

Otherwise, it depends on the the actual drive in the case, some
mechanisms are supported and some aren't. Toast supports a lot of
drives, if you can test it with that program it's worth a shot.

You're far more likely to have OS X support than OS 9.

Reasonable, as some components, and some repair techniques are common
between pre-G3 (i.e., pre-3500 and earlier) PBs, and later (i.e., 3500
and later) PBs.

There's even considerable commonality between certain 68K and PPC PBs.

No, I just know where to find the AppleSpec Database:

These are Apple's smallest and lightest notebooks:

PowerBook G4 12": 1.18" x 10.9" x 8.6" (= 110.6132 ci); 4.6 lbs.
PowerBook Duo: 1.9" x 10.9" x 8.5" (= 129.71 ci); 4.2 lbs.
iBook dual USB 12": 1.35" x 11.2" x 9.06" (= 136.9872 ci); 4.9 lbs.
PowerBook 100: 1.8" x 11" x 8.5" (= 168.3 ci); 5.1 lbs.
PowerBook 2400: 1.9" x 10.5" x 10.5" (= 209.475 ci); 4.4 lbs.

And it looks like I was wrong, too. The 12" PowerBook is actually the
smallest notebook Apple ever made! (Although not the lightest: that is still
the duo.)

Yes, IIRC, the DVD decoder card needs to be installed in the bottom slot,
because that is the Zoomed Video slot (on both the Wallstreet and the
3400/Kanga).

Again, don't take my word (or rather: hunch) for it, since I own neither a
Wallstreet, nor a 3400 or Kanga, nor the DVD decoder card, but judging
merely by specs, this should, theoretically, work. The DVD decoder card
takes the brunt of the number-crunching required to play DVD's, so the
Kanga's relatively slow CPU and bus shouldn't matter for DVD playback.

It'd be mighty interesting to try out. Anyone happen to own a Kanga,

Not necessarily, as the answer actually has two parts: 1) Will the Mac
see the CD-RW and 2) Can you actually use it to write to disks?

Since the drive is USB 2.0, we can assume that it is a standard USB mass
storage device. As a result, MacOS 8.6 and later should recognize the
attached drive.

The answer to the second question depends on what drive mechanism/model
is actually being used. It may be directly supported or may require
patched/custom drive profiles (i.e. PatchBurn under OS X).

can newer iBook run older OS?

2005-04-14 Thread Ge'
Dear Martin,
I checked at the Everymac site, and it says that all G3 ibooks can run
a version of OS 9, with the newest being 9.2.2; all the G4 ibooks run
only OS X versions. Here's the list page (sorted by processor speed):
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/
You click on the model you have, then look in the table for 'supported
Mac OS'

About updating, or actually 'downdating' firmware I don't know. If you
post your exact model, I'm sure other members can advise you whether you
need OS 9, or if OS X will run fast enough.

Greetings,
Ge'

I subscribe to both also, plus a few other, smaller lowend lists. I find
the powerbook list the most 'technical' and certainly the most helpful
also. The G3, and this may be a fault of the nanny or the collective

of an OS X list.

While I still haven't figured out what is the not-on-topic powerbook
model cutoff point, I like the feeling and sense of family in this
group. But then I have a 3400c collection and until I get a newer model,
I guess I don't have to worry about what's off topic, yet! If it's the

I would say that it sounds like a great idea, but if the technical

lot of members, I don't know how likely you would be to get any
technical questions answered on a new list. It's hard to get tech
support when there isn't anybody out there capable or willing to give
it.

Also, I don't have experience with G3+ 'books, but aren't they a lot
harder to take apart? I always hear complaints about that on G4 'books
- thousands of tiny Torx screws. Most of my 520c can be taken apart
with 5-15 screws. That may be something that hinders technical help
