Nervous Self Upgrader - G3 Lombard

2005-06-04 Thread paulmoshay

I recently purchased a sweet G3 333mhz Lombard on ebay.

I want to upgrade RAM (from 128mb). Looks like this would be a fairly
easy self install from

the Apple support pages, yet i'm unsure what to buy.

for instance OtherWorld Computing lists two diff types of RAM;

TechWorks PC133 SO-DIMM -
OWC PC100 SO-DIMM Memory Modules -

I read this PB could accept 512mb, though I don't think my needs
absolutely will require maxxing it out.

Hard Drive
My Lombard only has a 4 GB drive and I want to run OS X and have lots
of free storage for Docs, etc.

How tough is self installing a HD ?
Is current ebay item # 571548 http://tinyurl.com/84s6a
HD on ebay a decent one ?

Suggestions for a budget conscious somewhat capable self upgrader ?

Thanks in advance !

Re: WTB: 3400 CD

2005-06-04 Thread Manfred

Hello,

probably very hard to get. You need a spezial one for PB3400,
cause the 7.6.1 update is a spezial one. Be careful, there
is a common 7.6.1 update and a PB3400 only 7.6.1 update

But in my opinion the 8.6 fits this Powerbook best.

Anyone have one for sale or know where I can get a PowerBook 3400
 series CD (With 7.6)?

 Thanks...

I just got a PB3400 with 9.1(?), the latest that will work. I'm
curious why you prefer 8.6. Should I consider this?

Re: [SPAM]: Re: 520 PRAM battery

2005-06-04 Thread Geoffrey Davis

How do I recharge it if it isn't dead?

You don't. You buy a new one.

Sorry, but there it it. When the battery starts to die, the computer
starts acting wonky. How the battery is dying is that it won't hold a
charge. Or holds less less. It takes time for it to croak, making
it all that much more inconvenient, and the only thing for it is
replacement, which, admittedly, is also inconvenient in PowerBooks.
But worth it, for you'll probably never have to buy another one, and
your computer will run. Like new.

1400c Woes

2005-06-04 Thread Dan Palka
I got a 1400c yesterday...

I have three processors for it. The original 133mhz 603, a Newer 250mhz G3,
and a Sonnet 466mhz G3.

The original and the Newer processors work fantastic. However, I'm having
tons of trouble with the Sonnet card...

I've reinstalled it like 5 times, and this is what happens each time...

It will boot, and run for about 5 - 10 minutes. Then it will lock up (mouse
wont even move). Rebooting is impossible without power manager reset. When
I do reboot, it will lock up within seconds of booting, or lock up during
the boot process. Eventually, it will not boot at all.

This card is brand spanking new I just bought it from Provantage and had it
shipped FedEx overnight! I'm pretty disappointed Anybody have any ides on
whats going on here? Anyone have experience with these 466 Sonnet cards?

What OS are you running? The Sonnet cards have freezing problems due to a
QuickTime Audio bug in Mac OS 8.6 through 9.0. If you install a Sonnet
upgrade in a 1400, run either 8.5 (or below), or 9.1.

Interesting. I'm running Mac OS 8.6. Is this QuickTime version specific?
That seems odd that a Sonnet card would be incompatible with a version of
Mac OS.

Perhaps I'll try it with an older OS version.

Don't know about the ram, although I have upgraded my 3400c a couple of
times and it's easier than upgrading the hard drive. Neither one is
tough if you can get a copy of the manual, which a list member was
thankfully able to supply.

I'd steer clear of the drive from e bay. You can pick up an 80 gig
samsung drive with 8 meg buffer for for 133 at ncix.com. It is an oem
drive, same as the other one, but ncix will stand behind it. Check it
out here :

http://www.us.ncix.com/promo/promosale.php?webid=grand2005

The drive you suggested isn't even named. The fact that it is described
as an 'Apple' upgrade means nothing since your Powerbook will take just
about any ide drive. Big money for a no-name drive.

Either will work, the bus speed of the PB (100MHz) limits the speed.
OWC's memory is good, and they usually have good prices. Another
place I recommend is Data Memory Systems http://www.datamem.com

Replacing the memory is very easy. http://www.pbfixit.com has good
step-by step instructions, as does OWC and Data Memory.

Harder than installing the RAM, but not undoable. Again, the above

Is current ebay item # 571548 http://tinyurl.com/84s6a

That's a good price, not amazingly low, but lower than most.

There is no such thing as a 'Mac' HDD, though. Since the mid-90's any
IDE PC drive would fit in most Macs.

ANY currently shipping notebook HDD will fit in your Mac, so long as
it meeths the thickness requirements, which for the Lombard is 11MM,
IIRC.

I found the same drive for $104 here, with free UPS
shipping. :http://www.bananapc.com/products/productInfo.aspx?
