Rick,

Here's an excerpt from the description of the PowerBooks list from the
Low-End Mac site:

What topics may not be discussed?

Never post a link for Apple Service Manuals. Apple has a policy of shutting
down sites the post such links, and Apple has people on some of our lists,
so posting such links contributes to the sites posting this information
being shut down. Nobody wins when that happens.

Oddball PB1xx adapter?

2006-01-26 Thread Bob C.
Recently, an acquaintance told me that when the early PowerBooks (145, 170,
165, etc.) were in popular use, a third-party manufacturer made a
battery-sized AC adapter that would go right in where the NiCad battery
pack would fit, and used just a standard thin laptop-style AC cord. Does
anyone remember this? And if so, has anyone seen one available recently?

My batteries expired a long time ago, and I use my 170 on AC all the time,
but the rather large external brick is a slight annoyance, and since my
battery bay is now empty anyway, it would seem an ideal place to put the
whole adapter.

As an alternate plan, is is possible to build such a thing? I'm pretty good
with a soldering iron, but I'm no circuit designer! I have a feeling that
the necessary AC step-down transformer would be too big to fit... but what
do I know? :-)

I have replied to Colin off-list, but to get more information about
StarGate, go to:
http://www.krs.com.au/ for Kevin Raner Software...

Click on the Products tab, and then there's a button for the Downloads
page.

This is for the most recent version (1.4.3) of StarGate. I use a much older
version (1.1), which works flawlessly.

First and foremost, thanks for visiting my site, and I'm glad you enjoyed

I have not yet attempted opening the battery case myself, but intend to try

Early PowerBook Battery Rebuilding information

2005-02-26 Thread Bob C.
Vintage PowerBook users:

Martin has graciously supplied me with a lot of information on rebuilding
the early PowerBook 100-series batteries (reference his post to the Compact
Macs list from Feb. 22nd), and I've begun to post the information on my
budding Mac site.

Please check it out if you have any interest:

Much more information will follow. I will also be putting up Martin's
tutorial on building a Car Power Adapter for the 100-series PowerBooks
within the next couple of days.

Re: PB170 again

2004-09-26 Thread Bob C.
(Colin Hodder wrote:)
Hey, I was wondering if there is any way that I can make my 170
send or recieve stuff from my pentium 166 or my girlfriends
pentium 3.

My personal favorite method involves using a shareware program
called StarGate and a null-modem cable. Other than the cable, it
requires no hardware purchase. :-)

If you currently have standard modem cables for both your PB and
your PCs, you only need a Null-Modem Adapter which you can
get from Radio $hack or other sources. Or you can make your
own cable (it actually only requires three wires), easy if you have a
spare Mac printer cable and a DB-9 or a DB25 female
connector (depending on what your PCs need).

With StarGate, you put an incoming and an outgoing folder on
each computer connected, and anything placed in the outgoing
folder of either computer gets transferred to the other computer. It
works between a Mac and a PC, or between two Macs, or two
PCs. Simple and elegant! :-)

Re: Eudora on 170

2004-09-24 Thread Bob C.
I use Eudora 1.4.3 on my PowerBook 170, and it works very well. I have the
full 8MB of RAM, but I don't think that makes much of a difference with an
application as small as Eudora.

By the way, I think you might want to stick with 7.0.1 or 7.1 on the PB170.
System 7.5.3 takes up a lot more memory and disk space. Just my opinion,
though...:-)

 Hey,
I've been wondering if it's still possible to use Eudora on a mac as
old
as my powerbook 170? I found all the programs for it on a bunch of
different sites, but they mostly seem out of date. My 170 only has 4MB of
RAM and is still running system 7.0.1 (until I get the time to put all 19
disks of system 7.5.3 on it). It has whatever the standard modem was for
 these things.

The PowerBook 170 uses a proprietary RAM module (4mb) made specifically for

Re: PowerBook 170 modem

2004-07-09 Thread Bob C.
Jack,

Being a big fan of the PB170 (I've currently got two of 'em!), I can tell
you that as far as I know, no special software was required for the internal
modems to work. As part of the System 7.1 install for that model, a Control
Panel simply called PowerBook Setup is present, and it allows you to
decide between the Internal modem and the external Modem port on the back of
the PB. Once set to Internal, the modem behaves as any external Mac modem
would. That is, you can use any standard terminal software (Zmodem, Red
Ryder, White Knight, Smartcom II, etc.) and simply configure it to use the
Modem port. By the way, once in terminal mode with any of those programs,
you can type the various Hayes-standard ATI commands to get full
information displayed direct from the modem's internal ROM (try ati0
through ati9 followed by a [return] to see the various display screens,
although not all of them will work with all modems). For example, ati1
displays Global Village Communications on mine, and ati4 displays V.34
[28,800 bps] Data/V.17 [14,400 bps] Fax.

For dial-up Internet access, of course you need the Config PPP and Mac
TCP Control Panels, or one of the free alternatives, and individual pieces
of software for the vaious services. I regularly use Eudora 1.4.3 for Email,
Fetch 2.1 for FTP, and NSCA Telnet 2.7b4 for telnet access. I got
everything I needed to get started from a library book disk, Internet
Starter Kit for Macintosh by Adam C. Engst (1994), but these items are
available from a number of download sources.

Hope that helps!

Bob

- Original Message - From: Jack Countryman
The PowerBook 170 I'm playing with also has an internal modem. Any idea
what software was needed to get those to work? I vaguely recall something
about an 'Express' Modem that needed additional software...but am not sure
anymore what that was, if there were other types of modems in these, or
where to even look. What software was needed to add PPP or whatever to
those old systems (I think this had 7.01 or maybe 7.1 originally?) to get
the modem to work? Thanks in advance.

I have used both the Cannon BJC-85 and the HP 340. I think they are
both great. My preference is the Cannon for portability and the HP
for larger ink cartriges. If you're thinking portablility go with
the Cannon. They rock for traveling, and look better on the desk
than the HP 340. If you have infrared, the Cannon will print that
way too...no cables. Make sure to go to the Cannon web site and
compare the different models of BJC and drivers for your OS. Then go
to Ebay and get a great deal.

Battery Rebuilding Info?

2003-07-22 Thread Bob C.
I'm considering the idea of rebuilding one of my PowerBook 170 batteries.
I was wondering if there are any sites on the 'net that would have some
clear instructions on opening the plastic case, specs on the proper NiCd
cells themselves, and any tips for successful replacement.

TIA,
Bob

Powerbook Modem Setup

2003-03-21 Thread Bob Blome
Looking for some help getting a Motorola Modemsurfr 56k running on a 520c
with the PPC upgrade. My ancient Hayes 14400 connects fine. No luck with the
Motorola. Anyone have the init string that will get me hooked up? I've tried
a bunch I've downloaded off the usual web sites, but I keep getting the
error message telling me there is no ok response from the modem. Any help
will be appreciated. Thanks.

Farallon ethermac card won't connect

2003-03-17 Thread Bob Warner
Frank Modica wrote:
I picked up a Farallon ethermac PC card on ebay to create an ethernet
network for a pb 1400 through the PCMCIA slot. The 1400 iss a 166 mhz model
with 56 mb of RAM. I installed the software from the diskette, but when I
stuck the card into the slot it didn't bite; springing back and forth in
the slot. The card itself is a PCMCIA 2.1 and PC Card standard. When I
looked at the end of the card and the inside of the PCMCIA slot, they both
appeared to be female connectors. Did I get the wrong kind of card? I'd
really like to get this computer on an ethernet network.

Frank, I have exactly the same problem. A card I received from Farallon
displays the same symptoms. It will not stay seated in the PCMCIA slot on
my PB1400c.

The strange part is that another card (exactly the same configuration and
specs), works fine.

Examining both cards I cannot find any obvious defect or difference. I've
asked Farallon for a replacement, but since both the okay card and the
n/g one look (and apparently are) the same, I'm stumped.

In any event, that would appear (at least in my case) to rule out any
problem with the PCMCIA slot - and does indeed point to some anomaly in
the card.

1400 startup problems

2003-03-08 Thread Bob Raiselis
I've got a 1400/117 I'm trying to resurrect...

When I plug in the PowerBook 1400, the green light on the upper-right of
the screen sort of blinks, once a minute, and the speaker chirps once a
second in synch with the light.

If I hold in the Power manager reset button on the back, the speaker
chirping gets louder, and the screen flashes once a second, all in synch.
The screen flash is dim enough that it's hard to see unless the screen is
shaded or the lights in the room are off.

Removed the RAM modules one at a time, no difference. Replaced the PRAM
battery, no difference. Doing a command-control-powerkey makes no
difference, nothing starts up.

Any ideas of what to try next? This is not a critical machine for me, so
I don't want to drop much money into it, but I'd like to get it going if
possible.

thanks.

Bob

Thanks Gary. It would've helped if the 3400 had come with a manual ...
I'm a little embarrassed and very grateful. Thanks!

the plug on the back is a combo ethernet/rjll jack. Either will fit and
 work; it's autosensing.

powerbook 520c/520 monitor

2002-09-03 Thread bob

I have a powerbook 520c upgraded to ppc that i am unable to see the
screen. I also have a 520, i switched screens and both work ok on the
520.
When the grayscale screen is on the 520 ppc, you can hold it in sunlight
and see the screen, the only thing that you can see that is instantly
wrong is at the bottom of the screen the brightness window is showing.
It will go away for a little while if you try to adjust it with the
brightness control on the side of the monitor but it will return shortly
and you never have a change in the screen. Also you are unable to see
or adjust the contrast control.
When the screens are mounted on the 520 they both work and are visible.

The 520 ppc is operating 8.5
the 520 is operating 8.1

Anybody had this problem before or got a idea as what to try??
Thank You, Bob

Bad screen or bad pram?? any ideas?

2002-08-12 Thread bob

I tried to get my portable (520C upgraded with Newer to PPC 167 running

OS System 8.5) going last night and it wouldn't show anything on the
screen.

So i tried zapping the pram , but i couldn't get it to do that, after
numerous tries i thought i was doing it wrong, so i held the
option-command=r-p and power key on. it didn't reset the prom but it
did show the screen. so i took my hand off the buttons and at the
bottom of the screen you could see the screen indicator go from bright
to dim and then you can't see anything on the screen.
OK, so i did this again but after awhile my hands got tired of holding
keys down, so i released the option+command+ r and the screen stayed
visible because i was still holding the power+p down. I then released
the power and the screen went dark.
I redid this and kept holding the power key and p down, after computer
loaded everything, i had it rebuild desktop and then attempted a
restart.
Still no screen. I tried running norton while holding power+p, but it
hung up about half way through.
I unplugged it and took batteries out, retried it--no screen.
I did this and left it unplugged last night, plugged it back in this
morning- no screen. You can hear it load and it does load everything
because i can hear the voice telling me so.
Has this anything to with the pram battery ? I know that the date was
off and it has been off before when the computer has set for quite
awhile.
It also has been setting plugged in for 12 hrs. but still no screen.
I was able to mount this on my desktop and run norton on it had a few
minor problems which were corrected but still no screen.

When doing the option+command+r+p, it won't do it or you can not hear
the restart chime.

I have tried this also.
PowerBook 500 series

1. Remove the AC adapter and the battery.
2. Let the PowerBook sit without power connected for 3 to 5 minutes.
3. Simultaneously press and hold Command-Option-Control-Power On for 5
to 10 seconds.
4. Reinstall the battery and, if necessary, reconnect the AC adapter.

any help appreciated.

Paul, sorry i left this out of original post. But the 8.5 has been running
for over a year without any problems.
I had not used the 520c for a month and was going to do some updating on it ,

I would go back to the original 7.5.3 and get it running, with the
proper Newer extensions before pushing it to 8.5.

PB 1400 startup

2002-06-05 Thread Bob Raiselis

I'm having trouble getting a PB 1400cs going. The battery got totally run
down (left on, I think), but now even with the battery out it will not
boot. Put the AC adapter cord in, the screen flashes rhythmically (about
once a second) with what looks like video noise, and there's a chirp from
the speaker at about the same rate. Even without pressing the power key
this chirping starts. Nothing seems to work- Power Manager reset button,
key sequences, nothing.

Do I need to oepn this up and replace the motherboard battery?

thanks.
