Re: Powerbook 3400 Problem

Hello,
Have you tried re-seating the ram card? I have found them a bit fickle.

I've got a problem. My little 3400 was chugging along really
nicely until earlier today, while booting up (still on the os 9.1

shut off.

I slid the battery back in, and then tried to power up again and
nothing happened. SO, I plugged it into the AC adapter, and boom,
it powered up instantly - without pressing anything. All is well,
except now, when it boots up it says that there was a memory test
error, then followed by a warning that there isn't enough memory to
install my extensions and is booting up without them. Worse of
all, when I now go to About the Computer I have suddenly dropped
from what used to be 144mb of physical RAM to the original 16mb!

Have I somehow fried the memory in this thing? Is there any hope?

Thanks for your help,

Re: Good luck, and questions on NuPowr upgrade

2005-11-19 Thread Sims David

Hello,

When I installed a NuPowr upgrade, there was one file. You run the
install program with the old CPU installed, shut down, install the
new CPU and reboot. Very simple. Installing the CPU is as simple as
installing RAM.

The installer I used was the NUpowr 3 v1.0.0 installer. Unstuffed, it
is 336 KB. The Sit file was 224 KB. Do you have this one?

I love First (and Third) Saturdays!

For those of you not in the Dallas, TX area and unfamiliar with 1st
and 3rd Saturday, there is a computer and electronics flea market
every first and third Saturday of the month, in downtown Dallas.
Third Saturday is usually far and away the smaller of the two. I
had some things I needed to look for, so I headed down there this
morning.

One of the unexpected treasures I got was a PowerBook 1400C. Sold
as is, this was about the fifth 1400C I've gotten there. Average
price is about $10 - $20 or so for them. Every one I've bought has
been 'as-is', and every single one has worked. I got this one for
$10 when I saw it had a CD-ROM drive. I have one PB1400 that I
consider my 'main' machine, and one backup. I only have one CD-ROM
between the two of them, so the machine looked like a good gamble,
if just to salvage the CD-ROM.

And was it ever! When I plugged in the machine I got today, it
turns on, but won't boot because the hard drive apparently has no
OS. It brings up the disk/? icon.

My backup 1400 only has a 24 MB upgrade for a 40 MB total. When I
opened the new machine, I was delighted to see it has 2 24 MB
stacks, so I can cannibalize this to upgrade my backup 1400. But
there was BETTER news.

The processor is not stock. It's a NuPowr G3! So, lessee,
discounting the working machine itself, I got 48 MB in RAM
upgrades, a NuPowr G3, and a CD-ROM drive, for $10! I'm going to
consider this a good day!

Now that I'm done with the insufferable gloating, here comes the
plea for help. I've gone to Other World Computing and downloaded
the NuPowr files, but I have no clue of the process/procedure for
doing the upgrade (other than I do know how to physically swap out
the CPU's). I have the 3 downloaded files on the hard drive of the
'main' 1400, which will now get the NuPowr. Do I have to copy these
files to a floppy? They're SIT's, do I need to unstuff 'em first?
At what point do I replace the CPU? Do I install the SIT files
first, or the CPU, or does it really matter?

If anyone can provide a step-by-step, I'd be most appreciative.
I've heard the process is pretty simple, but that doesn't mean I
can intuit it out of nowhere, and I want to be sure not to break/
ruin anything.

Thanks for any help!

Richard (Winfidel)

BTW, How well will OS 9 run on the 1400 with 64 MB RAM and the G3
processor? I'm now on 8.5, but might consider upgrading. What are
the main real advantages of OS 9?

Thanks!

RA

Hello,
Did the patch have the information about requiring a minimum version

certain version of quicktime for itunes to work in 8.6.

Re: Best bw laser printer for 3400c running OS 8.6

Hello,

Get a PLW 320. It will connect to the printer port on your 3400C, and
can also be used by computers with an ethernet port by using an apple
talk/ethernet adapter. I have picked a couple of low page count units
from ebay for less than $10. Just be sure to have the sender remover
the toner cartridge and wrap it separately, so toner does not leak
through the unit in transit.

Re: Craigslist

2005-06-18 Thread David Rodriguez

Doc,

I for one have done a lot of buying and selling on Craigslist. When I
once came into a deal on about 50 new laptop drives, I sold about half
of them on CL San Francisco, another quarter to CL LA Portland. The
rest went on the swap list. I've never been taken once on those or
many of the other sales. HOWEVER... I've come close a few times.

As far as selling goes, one of the biggest scams comes from those who
have a client who wants one or more of your items. They say they will
pay up front with Cashiers Check or even Money Order and will provide
payment at time of pickup. The written english is often broken. If
selling, stay away.

As for buying, most sellers are ok. There were a few buyers who had
normal apprehension about buying from me so I provided them with a few
referrals in say the Bay Area who had also just bought and received one
of the drives. This is one method to protect yourself. Ask if he has
any referrals. Also read down the column because if there are any
repetitive scammers, the other users will often point them out.

Make sure that you purchase, make sure to request some form of tracking
number. It protects both sides and nobody can say must have gotten
'lost' in the mail.

Finally, read the Paypal 'Buyers Protection' section. They give some
good insights and means to protect you. Of course the average seller
is as apprehensive about you as you are of them. Of course Face to
Face exchanges are best but understandably difficult in Western
Montana. Overall, CL is a great service.

Just a few thoughts.

Does anybody know the rules for sending a computer to another
country? Can
you do it? What are the laws keeping one from doing so? What can be

to what country?

If you send the computer by national post (USPS, Post Canada, etcetera)
and fill out the appropriate customs declaration completely, you will
have no problem.

A bit to add. If you use USPS, they have a thick book behind the
counter which lists customs regs for each and every country around the
world. It specifically lays out what can and cannot be sent to the
country in question. The easiest way is just to drop by there and with
your question. You don't want to send something and end up having it
opened by customs and never seen again.

I just searched the USPS web site and they have a page that has some
limited information. You still want to rely on the detailed regs at the
Post Office.

Re: Fussy DVD drive on Lombard

2005-06-14 Thread David Rodriguez

Ben,

I've got a Lombard as well and do have problems with certain dvd
copies, but not all. I think part of the problem is that DVD
technology has evolved and the old drive hasn't. So old drives have
trouble reading certain media. Are any of your disks DVD+? I suppose
this could cause issues too.

You might also gently blow air using canned air onto the eye. All it
takes is a microscopic dust bunny to cause problems. Make sure it
doesn't blow liquid oxygen onto the eye as some 'new' cans will. Your
drive may have a shared eye or use separate eyes for cd and dvd.

Dave

But several won't mount, just get stuck in an endless loop with the
drive going 'whr -CLICK, whiiir-CLICK' and never mounting it.

Or do you think this particular drive is on the way out, and a new
  one might fix the issue?

No, and you never will, since it's a rom issue, not the mere presence

Is that the Rom on the Lombard or with the Cardbus itself? If it's the

desktop is emulating a drive. Dave

Lombard Questions

2005-05-29 Thread David Rodriguez

Morning all,

Been a long while since I've posted here. I just picked up a Lombard
the other day, of course it has problems but it's got enough good
things going to make it worth resurrecting. Good screen, dvd/rom w/
decoder, fair battery, a 256 mb chip. It's got a new 20 gig drive
installed w/ 9.2.2.

The bad side, the motherboard was dead and no power supply. I've
borrowed a friend's failing L2 Cache G3 400 mobo for the weekend and
power supply, which is allowing me to play around with getting it set
up. But I'll eventually need to find replacements for both. It has a
256 and 64 mb Ram but hope to find another 256 of the right type that
will give me 512.

Problem: Will not restart. I can shut down and then start up, but
cannot simply Restart. Trying to do so requires use of the reset
button. Would this be indicative of a low pram batter, a bad L2
Cache, or something else? With the inability to restart, I am having a
little trouble installing Jaguar too. I plan on moving up to Panther
and eventually using the firewire enclosure method to install Tiger,
but first things first.

I guess I'm also curious if anybody has been using a failing L2 cache
mobo long term? If so, how's that working out?

Other Question: Any guidance is appreciated in the search for the
appropriate type of low profile 256 Mb Ram Stick that will allow full
512 ram.

Thanks for any ideas,

Dave
Oregon

Hello,
I recommend Icab. It works fairly well, although it does not every
page properly. It is relatively quick, requires very little RAM, and I
use it successfully on a 1400, and a 3500. You may want to also take a
look at wannabe (sp?), a text only browser. It certainly has
limitations, but it is an option when resources are limited.

It's pretty stupid to get a faster laptop on my slow connection speed.

The freezer trick, as I've used it, is for drives that spin, but don't
read. If the head positioning or the electronics is marginal, this may
allow you to get the data off before the drive warms up.

I suppose it's possible that freezing will alter the stiction issue,
but I'm dubious.

Re: Best of two PB1400s

2004-10-13 Thread David Lesher
Just out of interest I opened up the case of that dead screen and
I've found that there's a tiny reed switch under the LCD panel
(behind the edge of the case, just about where the Apple logo is)
and it's broken - literally snapped in two. Can anyone tell me what
this reed switch does and whether this could be what's stopping the
display from working? When the machine starts up the display gives a
little flicker but then stays dark.
Likely blanks the screen when you close the laptop.

Re: 540c not powering up

2004-06-03 Thread David Pekarsky
New problem for me...
I have both batteries inserted and the power adapter hooked up.
Still, will
not power up. I have reset the power manager, unplugged and let sit
for a
few days then plugged back in, left it plugged in for a few days,
nothing
seems to work.

I am going to check the power adapter tonight.
I know that my main batteries are bad, and I believe the backup to be
dead
too...could it be a bad backup battery? I just replaced it a few
years ago
but (when it was working) if I unplugged the power, then all of the
prefs
(date, memory, etc.) were reset.
Try booting it without the batteries in it at all. If it boots, just
shut it down normally and then boot it again (still without batteries
installed,) and reset the PRAM (option - apple - p - r though it
sounds like you know the drill) and let it gong through about four or
five times and then let it boot. When if boots. install the batteries
and then the machine might even recognize them as well and should boot
with them installed. Of course, the latter part of this is all
circumstantial. only if the machine boots without batteries installed,
but give it a try and see if she gongs away!

Series 1xx Powerbooks

2004-05-12 Thread David Grogan
Greetings --

I have a few vintage Powerbooks that I am about to donate to a local
church. Couple of questions:

1. Does anyone know where i can find an installer for OS 7.1? I'd like
to do a clean install before giving these away.
2. Where may I find bluebook' values for these older machines?

Cheers

Re: newbie with PB 170

2004-04-28 Thread David Pekarsky
THese are hard to find, however I did happen to pick up a couple at the
last MIT Swapfest I went to. These machines shipped with a 40mb or
80mb drive originally which still got for between $10-$20. The Entire
1xx series save for the oddball 150 and the 190 which was built a
couple years later, all use a 2.5 SCSI drive. These pretty much look
identical to a modern notebook/ laptop drive as new laptops use an ATA
2.5 drive and they look quite similar save for the connectors which
are different. I picked up a couple 2.5 SCSI drives which are about
120mb each, so if you are interested I can format one with an operating
system for your machine so that you can pop it in and use it.

The installation can literally be done in three minutes once you get
the hang of it compared to modern laptops which can take hours...see
new iBook... You will also need a Torx T-8 screwdriver as well as a
Torx- T-10 version which are just two different sizes respectively.

You may find that either of them will take out the four Torx screws on
the bottom of the machine as these have never seemed as a defined size,
but you will need the size 8 one to take out the screw on the back near
all the ports. Once you have the five screws holding the top and
bottom halves together, pry the back (ports on it) end apart about two
inches and reach in and carefully unplug the display connector and then
you can work your way around the frame to the front to separate the
front half of the case which gets easier the more times the machine has
been opened, just do not totally snap the connectors in doing so. The
smaller one (screwdriver) usually is then used again on the inside to
unscrew the bracket securing the hard drive and the floppy drive in
place. Be careful when tightening or loosening the silver screws on
the inside though as I found that the connections that the threads for
the base that the screw goes into can break off quite easily if you
tighten it too hard.

Good luck with everything and e-mail me offlist if you are interested
in the drive which I can format for you with OS 7.5 (free) or 7.1 for
testing and evaluation unless you have a license for it. Overall the
170 and most of the 1xx series are very capable machines, just try to
avoid the 150 (not looking to start a flame war) as it was quite
compromised in several ways.

Re: newbie

2004-04-23 Thread David Lesher
).

AppleTalk and its File Sharing works just fine in System 7.5.2, I
believe. Use PhoneNet connectors to go from the PowerBook to your PM
7200.

I've never seen or heard of PhoneNet connectors, unless you mean
telephone wire of the sort you use on a modem or telephone. I guess this
means another Google, huh?

Buzzwords 101

Localtalk is a 230Kb/s physical network that runs from old Mac to Mac
via the serial jacks cables. It's really RS-485, or close to it.

Localtalk *carries* Appletalk (and ?Appleprint/Appleshare?) _applications_ .

Later, Ethernet became the far superiour transport alternative to
Localtalk, still carrying Apple[talk/print/share] but often called
Ethertalk.

Even later, Apple moved from Appletalk to err... Appletalk
functionality over TCP/IP. Looks the same on the surface, but
within...

Usually there's a Control Panel to select which port, the serial one
or Ethernet or sometimes IR.

PhoneNet was a Fallon scheme that substituted modular phone cables
and adapters for the pricey Localtalk cables. It's STILL Localtalk.

Now, I bet everyone on this list has excess Localtalk/PhoneNet stuph
and is willing to make you a deal. I know I've got lots!!!

video cables

2004-04-20 Thread David Lesher
Which PB's use the flat USB on Steroids shaped external video connector?

We're cleaning out the Den of Inequity and finding a bunch of these
cables. We also have a bunch of both Localtalk and ADB cables. Also
have one cable whose connector I'll describe as DB-25ish, -- 2 rows
of pins, but ~36 pins and one coaxial video pin/shield at the end:

  / .. \
 /O \
/..\
I can't recall the official designation of these but Sun used to use
similar ones.

Would someone here be interested in such? If I can prove we don't
need them, I'll offer same to those people who write me OFF LIST.
Shipping at the least would be nice. Trades for things we need,
better. I reserve the right to be arbitrary. Plus I need an OK from
the PHB but that's usually not an issue.

Part of my confusion stems from the fact I don't know what does exactly what.

I thought Open Transport was the Apple implementation of TCP/IP PPP.

And Remote Access was the remote desktop scheme, with modem dialing..

How far off am I?

Ahh.. I tried that but before I changed TCP/IP to PPP.

Thanks..

Re: PB 540c Car Adapter ??

2004-04-14 Thread David Lesher
Is there such a thing as a car adapter for the PB 540c?

RadiosHack and others sell universal DC-DC adapters. You have choose
a plug tip to fix the 540, and set the output of the adapter to
whatever the voltage needed is...

I see 273-1827 as one model...

Of course, if the Apple plug is so weird they don't offer it This
is true with G3/G4 PB's/iBooks.

Ummm, I take it you've never actually *seen* a PB540 power supply, have you?

Quite true! Is that the model known for catching on fire?

PB540's use a 14 volt PS that has 4 pins with two separate 14V (or
maybe it's 14.7V, I forget exactly) circuits on them, one for
powering the computer, the other for powering the charging circuit.
Ugh! That will be a lot harder

PPP Dialer

2004-04-14 Thread David Lesher
So I found a modem card for the 190. But I need PPP software, or at
least a dialer. (Does OT/Remote Access have PPP in it?)

I loaded FreePPP2.6 promptly killed the box. It hangs at a popup
showing only Modem port and no text [I assume it's complaining it
does not find the PCMCIA modem.] But no way out.

It would not boot until I started without extensions. What
combination of Remote Access, OT and Free PPP do I need to ge this
working?

Re: Booting 190 from external SCSI HD

2004-04-13 Thread David Lesher

Well, I have 8.1 and used Drive Setup to format a 2GB HD, and got 1.9GB
 out of it ...
So I used OSX to erase/reformat the 2GB drive as HFS+.

I move it back to the 190, I copied the system over to it, I bless
the System Folder [worked],
and I went to change the startup drive.

	Blat:

..
Your model of computer can only start up from a disk formatted with
OS Standard...
So I guess I'll make a 100M HFS and the rest HFS+, if that is even possible...

I'm sorry, but I don't know what to tell you. I've never used OS X.
Neither of my two Macs are capable of running that. However, the 2 GB HD
I formatted with Drive Setup and OS 8.1 IS my startup disk. I had no
problems whatsoever making it do that -- I only wish I could run my Disk

But is your external 2GB formatted HFS, or HFS+?

Re: Booting 190 from external SCSI HD

2004-04-13 Thread David Lesher
IIRC, 8.0 supported neither Slaves nor HFS+, 8.1 supported Slaves (but
only if one downloaded Drive Setup 1.6.4, which was NOT included with
8.1) but not HFS+, and 8.5 supported both.

What are slaves?

Anyway, 8.5.1 came with everything you need for Slaves and HFS+, and with
8.6 everything finally worked pretty well.
190 stops at OS8.1; nothing newer...

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30345

Mac OS Extended Format
Mac OS 8.1 now supports a new volume format called Mac OS Extended
format. The hard disk format supported by Mac OS version 8.0 and
earlier is Mac OS Standard format. Mac OS Extended format optimizes
the storage capacity of large hard disks by decreasing the minimum
size of a single file. As an example, on a 4 GB hard drive a file
containing only 4K of information requires 64K of space in Mac OS
Standard format, whereas with the Mac OS Extended format, it will
require the actual 4K on the 4 GB hard disk.

Existing hard disks formatted with Mac OS Standard format will
continue to function and be supported by Mac OS 8.1. To determine
whether a disk was initialized with Mac OS Standard format or Mac OS
Extended format, select the disk, and choose Get Info from the File
menu.

If you want to use Mac OS Extended format on one or more of your hard
disks, please refer to the About Mac OS Extended Format document. For
additional help in creating and using a Mac OS Extended format volume
as a start up volume, please go to:
http://www.apple.com/support.

And I found the gotcha notice:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30344

680x0 Specific Issues
680x0 processor computers cannot use a hard disk initialized with Mac
OS Extended format as the start up disk, but the Mac OS Extended
format can be used on additional disks connected to a 680x0 computer
running Mac OS 8.1 or later. In addition, you can not select a hard
disk initialized with Mac OS Extended format in the Virtual Memory
section of the Memory control panel.

Booting 190 from external SCSI HD

2004-04-12 Thread David Lesher
I've copied the System Folder. But I recall some magic re: getting
it Blessed. Missing Manual talks only about how the active system
folder is the only one blessed.

Q1: I'd like to be able to select a spare boot folder in case I
FUBAR the one. But how do I do that? (In OS9 I think there is a way
to choose at boot..)

You have to bless the System Folder you want to boot from. To do
this move the Finder file out on to the desktop and then put it back
in it's System Folder. If that doesn't bless the folder then in the
other folder, the one you DON'T want to boot from create a folder
and call it something like Finder in here and move the Finder file
into it. Putting Finder at the beginning of the folder name makes
it sort next to the Finder file. After this now try blessing the
System Folder you want to boot from.

OK, I'm not winning at this...

I got some off-list advice list..but even so.

I hooked up an external SCSI hard disk, ID 5. First I copied the
Previous System Folder to the SCSI drive. That was a PITA -- the
System Folder is 60MB but the finder balked until I had ~200MB free
on the drive. Swap space needed?

So now it's on the drive. I then tried to Bless the SCSI System Folder:

a) I moved its finder to the Desktop, and it looked fancy...and moved it back.

b) Then I moved the existing internal Finder to System Folder:
Find-it-here:. I then tried again to Bless the SCSI Folder. No
change. I put the internal Finder back.

I set Startup Drive to the SCSI, [It even shows partitions with NO
system folder..] but while it now tries to boot from it [I see a
brief Floppy ?], it then falls back to booting from the internal.

What do I check next?

I'd like to run ssh from this box. What do I need to get, and where from?

EWw, 7.5.2 should not be used. It was the initial release for
the 190 and was one of the buggiest OS versions ever produced for
the Mac.

You can download OS 7.5.3 and the 7.5.5 update for free from Apple.

Thanks. I have 8.0 here; I'll just load that -- should it come with
OpenTransport?

I assume I must boot from the 8.0 CD?

Serial Comms on 190

2004-03-01 Thread David Lesher
So I've been given a 190. It's running 7.5.2.

Lacking Ethernet {for now; I keep looking for PCMCIA cards with
drivers}, I'd like to use it as a serial port monitor on the firewall.

So what serial comm program should I use with it?
Where might I find an Ethernet card?
If I find one, is there a telnet/ssh program of note?

It sounds like it might be looking for a network - did
you have it linked to a network before? I would try
switching off Appleshare in the extensions manager, or
trashing theAppleshare Prep file in preferences.

Also, for anyone who has a Stylewriter II, if the
ink cartridge is dry, should the printer still be
found by the Mac? Mine seemed to work (sort of) when
I first set it up after many moons. Now I get a
message essentially telling me that the printer
can't be found and to check the setting in Chooser,
 blah, blah.

The printer should be recognized, then give you an
error message when you try to print. Check to see if
another application is using the port - I would check
Appletalk first. This could even be related to your
other problem, perhaps?

Well, there's a couple of suggestions until someone
more knowledgable shows up.

Not the bios but close in a sense. Your system folder (if present) is
damaged and as such, you fill need to start up from a bootable system
floppy. OS 7, 7.1 are the best choices though you can try 7.5.(x) if
you would like. Install disk 1 will boot the machine as will the disk
tools disk. Have fun with the powerbook as those 1xx machines (save
for the 150) are great machines.

Re: Subject: Interesting battery issues

2004-02-02 Thread David Thrower

By the way, I drool over you PB1400 users that get
 2hours plus out of your
batteries. Even the new batteries (third party
 company) are only good for
 about 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 hours. Of course, I dont do lite
 computing.

 Ken Vann

What you're doing seems to be the key. I get up to
three hours of note taking if the computer is not
constantly fully awake. If I were to try ripping MP3s
or recording sound while on battery, the 1400 would
probably give me about 45 minutes.

This is my main (and favorite) computer. I use it

I can get, for a reasonable price, a Kanga, with Mac

 internal Ethernet, and
a MegaHertz 56K PC Card modem (plus the internal

My question: Would the Kanga is faster for what I
 use it?
I know it has a faster bus (50 MHz, the 1400 is only
 33 MHz), but the
 1400 has a faster CPU...
 Advantages? Disadvantages? Opinions?

 Hugo Diaz
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi,
The Kanga's faster form factor and the 1400's
faster cpu may offset each other to the degree that it
might be worth thinking about other issues.

Such as parts. If anything goes haywire on a Kanga,
there's a good chance it will be tough to find a
replacement for it, and if you do, they'll have you by
the you-know-whats. A crucial point could very well
be the availibiliity of replacement batteries, it's
easy to get them for the 1400 - not sure about the
Kanga, might be able to use one from another 'Book,
like maybe the 3400...anyone?. The 1400 is a breeze
to find a new screen, new processor, new keyboard etc.
for. Oh yeah, the 1400's keyboard is supposed to be
much nicer FWIW. One more point for the 1400 - the
Kanga is somehow even heavier...not sure how they
pulled that one off. ;-)

The Kanga probably has better video, in terms of
responsiveness if not resolution, and has more RAM
capacity (though OSX would probably be too much for
the little fella' even if there's a hack available for
installation). 160Mb RAM in the Kanga would make
OS9.1 very happy for sure, though. The Kanga has
built-in ethernet, as well.

I'd stay with the 1400, but I am a happy user of one
so I am biased... ;-)

Best,
David

No idea, unfortunately.

Also, can I remove the battery from the left bay and

Or is the left bay a

Battery only, I'm afraid, though you don't have to

sleeping it before swapping will do fine.

Re: PB 1400 Battery Weirdness

2004-01-29 Thread David Thrower

I use Battery Recondition once a month or so but
 still have wildly varying
minutes of operation time on battery power. Even
 with fairly light use I've
NEVER gotten more than 45 minutes out of it and very
 often even 10 minutes
of usage seems to exhaust the poor thing until it
 has to droop onto the
 fainting couch!

But the most puzzling thing about this is that the
 Battery Status Monitor in
the Control Strip never shows less than 5 or 6 bars
 - even 7 - out of 8 when
the battery swoons! I guess my question is: is there
 a voltage sensing
software in this nice little 'Book that could be
 inaccurately assessing the
remaining battery power? Or is the monitor
inaccurate? Is it just a bad
battery? Or must I simply never wander more than ten
 minutes away from the
 nearest wall socket?

Hi,
Part of the problem is possibly due to your upgrade
card, as some of the earlier G3 cards were notorious
battery-suckers, reducing battery life to 50% of the
1400's original (marginal) spec. I'm not sure of
whether it was ALL brands, or just one or two
prominent ones, but it sounds like a possible culprit,
especially since the orginal 1400 specs were closer to
two hours.

The other thing that leaps to mind is that the
discrepency between the meter and the shutoff suggests
that the Power Manager needs to be reset. This is
apparently done by removing ALL batteries, power
supplies, peripherals, etc and holding down the Power
button for a good couple of minutes. Someone more
knowledgable than myself will doubtless chime in with
the exact procedure, but that is about right.

If you are absolutely in love with the 1400 form
factor, as I am, you might do well to look into a
used Sonnet G3 333mHz card, especially the one with
the 1Mb backside cache - they can be had for $100 on
eBay. I use Sonnet's 466mHz card and get 2.5-3 hours
of light useage (i.e. class notes) routinely. It is
my understanding that the 333mHz cards are even better
battery-wise, but it's probably close either way (with
the 466mHz card obviously being quite a bit faster
cpu-wise).

David Thrower

Re: PB1400 - scsi cd-rw question

2004-01-28 Thread David Thrower
I use Toast on a 1400 under OS9.1 with no problems. I
think you only need to get SCSI Mng. 4.3 to use a
feature or two - I think using a RAM Disk as the disk
buffer is one. I don't think I ever put this on my
'Book - I know I meant to look, but I think I have the
stock OS 9.1 software. I can't look at the machine
right at the moment, but I'm 99% sure of this.

Try it and see if it works, if you have a problem I
can email you any files I might have that could help
you, as it seems MacOS is fairly modular (at least
within one revision or so) - i.e. I use OS 9.2's
Startup Disk Control Panel under OS 9.1 etc.

FWIW, I use both Yamaha 8424 and HP 6200 burners.

Re: iCab browser/browsers for older macs (os 9.1)

I have just tried iCab, on my 3400c/240/. It seems
 **great**!

What is everyone else using? IE5.1 is getting
 pretty unreliable, and
 Netscape 7 is so S L O W, Opera doesn't seem
 finished yet (keeps
 crashing)

Another vote for iCab here.

When I DeMicrosofted my desktop, I tried Mozilla (had
a lot of crashes, contrary to it's reputation), Opera
(didn't seem to work with my fav websites well
enough), Netscape 7 (total resource pig), and finally
iCab. It wasn't even close - it's lean, mean, and
fast, and doesn't leave ten million flippin'
extensions in my OS9 folder.

I use it on a G3-upgraded Performa 6360, a G4-upgraded
PM7500, and of course, my beloved (G3-upgraded)
PowerBook 1400., and the performance is excellent on
each.

Ok, confession time...I have kept, in case of
emergency (such as not being able to reach a financial
website or something on iCab), both IE 5.1 and
Netscape 4.7 in reserve. I trashed IE's extensions,
as it seems to be happy to reinstall them the second
another application loads it up by default (can you
say BIG BROTHER?!). Also, although I actually use
NisusWriter 6.5, I also installed Word 2001 (only on
my 1400), again just in case I need to submit
something earth-shatteringly important in
no-mistakes-allowed-Word-format. So sue me. ;-)

Ok.

I took it apart and discovered discoloration on the

Hi,
You can definitely add a CD-ROM module into the
expansion bay, these are available on eBay for 30-80
dollars, depending on the speed. I would pay no more
than $35 for a 6X, no more than $50 for an 8X, and no
more than $70 for a 12X. I managed to get a 12X for
$33, but that's pretty durn lucky.
I don't know which pool games off the top of my

You should be able to do a custom install of 9.1 to add the USB function

Try trashing the Finder preferences and restarting. (Can't empty them from the

Re: 1400 a Sonnet G3 400Mhz Upgrade

2003-11-23 Thread David Thrower
Hi,
I'm a newbie here, but if I may be so bold as to
comment...
   I just souped up a 1400 with a Sonnet 466mhz G3,
64Mb RAM, and a Fujitsu 20Gb(2Mb buffer) hard drive
upgrade. Under 8.6, I had frequent and
across-the-board crashes at first. After a clean
re-install of 8.6, however, these crashes were greatly
reduced. I then experienced crashes with only certain
programs/functions, and have finally weeded them out
by upgrading to OS9.1, updating the Startup Disk
Control Panel to 9.2.2, and playing with extensions.
I'm not sure what the difference might be between
the cards we own, if there are any beside the slight
speed difference, but I'm pretty sure that you need to
max the RAM out at 64Mb for a G3 running 9.1 - for the
1400 or anything else. I also use Virtual Memory
mapped to a CompactFlash card in the PCMCIA slot
rather than the hard drive, and I think that helps a
bunch.
I think that replacing the hard drive is a must as
well, for performance at least. If you have a good
disk utility, then you could rule out this having
anything to do with crashes I guess...unless of course
there are some weird timing issues...can you tell I'm
really getting out of my depth here? ;-]
   If I were you, I'd get 64Mb of all-new RAM and a
new disk, then re-install OS9.1 and, what the heck,
get yourself a nice 256 meg Ultra CompactFlash, but
that's me - I'm crazy about the 1400.

Best Regards,
David Thrower

 beast out for play,
wiped the HD (which needs to be replaced...still the
 original 750MB)
and did a complete reinstall of OS 9.0.4 then
 upgraded to 9.1.

My question is with the Crescendo driver that
 enables the backside
cache. It is much needed, but ever since I bought
 the upgrade, it
tends to cause the powerbook to crash quite often.
 With the extension
disabled, it never crashes. Back when I bought the
 thing, this
happened and upon calling Sonnet, they said that 9.1
 should fix it
(this was before 9.1 was released). It never really
 did fix it (only
made the crashes a little less frequent), so I have
 survived without
the benefit of the cache, but not happily. I have
 tried the most
recent driver on their website, with no better luck.
  I have often
wandered if it was because of my limited RAM, and if
 I were to get
another 24MB chip ($70...ouch) if it would change
 things.

On another note, I have thought about purchasing a
 MobileStor drive
from MCE (Other World Computing). I have heard that
 a 1400 would see a
huge speed benefit from such a HD upgrade,
 especially sided with a chip
upgrade. I have my eye fixed on the 40GB with an
 8MB cache (just
slightly more than the other 40GB HD). I have
 thought of turning this
little thing into a storage for my MP3's that I can
 connect to my G4,
either through SCSI (if possible) or ethernet. Has
 anyone ever used
these drives, and does anyone see any cons in doing
 this. Also, what
was the last iTunes released for OS 9.1 and where
 could I find it?

Sorry for the length and all the questions. They
 have been building up
for many years now. I may return with more at a
 later time.

If I can find an HDI-30 to DB25, do I then need a DB25 passthrough

then use the zip's own termination power to do the final termination?

G-3 upgrade it and you get an L2 cache in the bargain. I have two 1400/117s

Rare? Powerbook 170

2003-09-27 Thread David Pekarsky
No, this is not the blue and white powerbook 170 that apple made for
some LPGA golfing event a while back for some reason, as undoubtebly
that cam to your head immediately...
While I was at the MIT swapfest in Cambridge, MA last Sunday, a seller
was selling a powerbook 170 with an actual mac video (15 pin 7+8)
output piece that replaced the left side clutch cover, that being the
rounded piece at the edge where the display half and bottom half of the
machine meet. He was selling this along with about 30 other 1xx, duos,
and 5xx machines as well as nearly 20 DuoDocks under his table. Upon
inquiring, I was told that the video out port worked, and as I did
examine the machine, I realized that it was a 170 which did not come
with any video out of any sort, that being the normal video out that is
on the 160, 165(c), and 180(c) 1xx machines. The video out port
protruded from an otherwise normal left side clutch cover and as such,
looked to be an OEM part as it was not hacked together by any means.
My question to all of you powerbook hoarders out there is as follows:
does anybody have any information whatsoever regarding a video out port
on the 170 that apple built? To put it this way, the port and clutch
cover looked too good and normal be non-OEM.
Any information would be appreciated by myself, and I am sure of
everyone else as well...
Thanks,
David Pekarsky

What About Teflon Repair?

2003-09-25 Thread David R.
There has been some helpful discussion about different plastic glues, some
of which will definitely come in handy. But what I need to know is, is
there any product/method available for repairing Teflon parts which are also
used inside some drives.

Pretty slippery stuff so I imagine it's got to be something that fuses the
material. The local hobby shop had no solution.

I just recently read online of using Locktite 406 or 3M 4630 but haven't
tried either yet in hopes of getting confirmation before spending the $10.

Thanks for any ideas...

Dave

Re: PB 1400 OS 9.1 installation tip

2003-09-23 Thread David Allen
I ran 9.1 on my 1400/117s before upgrading them to G3s. Very slow, but ran. I use 64
meg of real RAM (It ran with 60 Meg also, but prior to upping
my real RAM to at least 60 Meg, it wouldn't install.) 9.1 runs well on a G3 w/64
Megs, but it doesn't leave much for working with any apps. Using
68 Meg of Virtual Memory allows using apps like Photoshop, Office 2001, etc. The
G3/333 is fairly quick even using VM. The G3/217 is a bit slow,
but still usable.

David Allen

I've got the max--64megs of RAM. But I think your problem is that OS 9.1 requires a
minimum of a G3 processor (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

Re: screen

2003-09-21 Thread David Allen
The c and ce models both show 1000's of colors, while the cs shows 256
colors. This is the built in video support for the LCD screen. All models offer
a video card which supports 640 x 480 @ 256 colors (512KB VRAM) on an external
monitor. Third party companies offer a1 MB VRAM card, which ups the external
display resolution to 1000's @ up to 832x624 and 256 colors up to 1152x870.

David Allen

Hi have a question for you all (the techie ones anyhow)

If i put a 5300c screen on a 5300ce board (the ce screen is smashed) would i
 get 640x 480 at 1000's or 256.

CD-Writer Plus w/ Mac

2003-09-08 Thread David R.
Hey all,

I recently picked up an HP CD-Writer Plus Model M820 CDRW. It is a 4x4x20x
scsi which hooks up to a pcm/cia card. The card has two settings, 16bit and
CardBus. It is a nice compact writer not much bigger than a compact disk.

I am hooking this up to my 5300cs, it powers up fine and cd's spin. Trying
both card settings, the machine sees the card but does not recognize or
mount any cd's. Only seems to see the card however in the lower slot. So
far I haven't been able to find any special drivers, but I thought I'd check
to see if anyone here has made this writer work on their powerbooks and how
it was accomplished.

Thanks,

DAve

Re: 5300 'REA' SET TO END SOON!!!

2003-09-06 Thread David R.
Hi everyone, new to this list.
I bought a PB 5300 off of ebay a month ago.
(24/500/256 colors) No battery, but power supply.
Had to have power connector on back fixed, as
connection broke loose from solder. The repair place
said this is quite common with powerbooks, especially
the new ones. Is it?

I hope you didn't pay too much to have it fixed unless they did it under the
Apple REA Program?

I guess it's a good a time as any to point out here once more that the Apple
Repair Program is set to end in just a few weeks from now.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30425

 DISCUSSION

Note: The PowerBook Repair Extension Program will concluded on 2003-09-30.

If you had it fixed elsewhere, I'm not sure how that will affect its
coverage under the program as there were a few other components that were
fixed/exchanged as well. For Free! Like the motherboard, screen, and one
or two other items.

For anybody else that has a 5300 or 190, it would be good for you to read
this Apple Document and look inside the battery bay to see if there is a
number stamp within.

But even if there is (like mine had was through the REA once) apparently
they (Apple) had tried to simply re-solder the power connector joints for
some. This clearly didn't last, so I was able to make the argument that
they didn't repair it properly and tried to take a shortcut. So they took
it in again and that time replaced everything.

But if you've had it re-soldered by a non-authorized Apple Tech, and there
were no numbers stamped inside the battery bay, that may be a moot issue too
and void the program or part of it? Of course, if it was by an Apple
Authorized Tech, and they charged you, then you may have something more
significant to gripe about because maybe 'the repair place' should have
known about the REA Program.

Hope this helps.

Re: OS 9.1 on a PB 1400?

2003-09-04 Thread David Allen
First, if this is a bit late for the thread, it's because the cable people took 12
days to get the cable at the pole by my house to work. 12 days since we moved into
the new house and 12 days of internet withdrawal I almost went back to dialup.
(That
would be like a junkie going for a glass of beer because he couldn't find and heroin.)

Partitioning is easy and works well for multiple systems. You can start from one to
repair the other, etc. I run 8.1 and 9.1 on various Macs in their own partitions. The
only problem I've seen is using RAMDoubler while swapping between 8.1 and 9.1. When
you go to 8.1, it works fine, but returning to 9.1 , it likes to tell you it wasn't
properly imstalled and needs to be reinstalled before it will work. You need to save
everything from the drive to another drive or computer (or burn it to CD if that option
is available) as partitioning will wipe the entire drive. You can then copy the 8.1
stuff back to its partition and install 9.1 on the other. Be advised that 9.1 needs
lots of RAM. You'll be wanting the max of 64 Meg and VM on. 9.1 runs quite nicely on my
1400, G3/217 and fantastically on my 1400, G3/333.

A little note: Many OS 9.1 apps actually only need the carbonlib extension. (1.6 is
the newest I believe and is a free download from Apple.com) It can be downloaded and
dropped into the extensions folder of OS 8.1 and allows many 9.1 apps to work. You can
also download Nine 11 (Version 1.3) a free extension that allows using many 8.1 apps
with 9.1. (Anyone remember the download URL?) I can attach it to an email if you
can't find it online. Drop it in the 9.1 extensions folder.

Spencer Carter wrote:

For the past two years, my 1400 has been happily running OS 8.1 with a Sonnet G3
 upgrade.

Now I'm thinking about going to OS 9.1, which is required by a new application I'm
 thinking about getting.

Would appreciate advice on whether to install 9.1 on a second partition and leave
8.1 as is. I'm concerned that some of my older applications may not like 9.1, but on
the other hand, I've heard it's not good to have two operating systems on the same
 Mac.

 Any do's or don't regarding installing 9.1?

Don,

For both my Kanga and 240mhz 3400c I'm using a Belkin USB PCMCIA card,

Firewire card but I'm sure it's the same. As far as 802.11 cards those
should fit, like stated before people with 68k 190 PBs are getting them to

5300 Powerbook Memory?

Hi all,

A friend's friend has a 5300cs (same as mine) and he is wondering what a 24,
32, 48 or higher stick of memory goes for. So I told him I'd check here for
him in case somebody has some for sale.

I guess give me a buzz at my email address and I'll pass it on to him
tomorrow. I assume this person has Paypal, if not he could do a Money
