I got mine from Radio shack, don't remember the model, but the 4 AA's
snap into a holder that snaps onto the charger, very compact.

Re: 180 display

2003-10-02 Thread Volk
Ben,

This is a characteristic of LCD displays. The adhesive allows a
minute amount of water vapor to penetrate, as this happens the display will
continue to darken from the edges to the center. The problem is more acute
in environments with higher humidity. I don't know what the differences
are with the 2 screens.

Re: 3400c Battery vs. G3 Kanga Battery

2003-10-03 Thread Volk
Rat,

I have 2 3400's and use a mixture of batteries both Li-Ion and Ni-Mh
with no problem in the computer(System is 8.6), some of the Li-Ions are
marked for the 3400 and others for the G3, I have no problems charging in
the computer, but the Ni-Mh will not charge in my after market charger by
VST.

Re: 3400c no dong

Mike,

The machine probably has acute sleeping sickness, the power regulator
may be the problem, however, I have 2 units with the same symptoms and
replacing the regulator board didn't help, there is a chip on the logic
board that scans the keyboard and controls the ADB port among other things,
it also receives commands from a logic device called the O'hare control
chip, either one or both devices could be at fault, so far I have been
unable to locate these parts seperately and replacement logic boards run in
the $200.00 range.

That's doable, however, these packages are high density and you'd need a
card not suffering from the same failure as repeated swaps would be hard on the
board, and would try ones patience.

Linda,

The problem could be the Power Manager, resetting it should cycle every
thing back to normal, removing the battery is part of this procedure,
since it is dead leave it out. For directions see the web page:

 http://www.westwind.com/reference/tn/PMReset.html

For battery Info: http://www.academ.com/info/macintosh/

On some of the earlier power adapters the plastic tip had a tendency to
fracture and short the logic board resulting in a blown fuse inside, check
the adapter for this fault and verify that it has an output with a meter,
If this information doesn't lead to a solution, opening the powerbook
becomes a necessity as the next thing to check is the soldered on fuse on
the logic board next to the battery contacts.

Eric,

Although the 3400 is cardbus compliant, the card cge is not unless it
has been modified by MCE. There is an eject hole similar to the floppy
drives by the cardbus slots, but the computer must be shutdown. There
various physical mods listed in the archives to allow specific cards to be
used in the 3400. To get the drive to mount, I restart after everything is
in place and only use the lower slot.

Re: hardware for powerpoint?

2002-10-30 Thread Roger Volk
Rick,

The 1400 requires both an optional video card and the high density monitor
adapter that ends in a standard 15 pin D Mac monitor connection. Griffin makes
an adapter that converts this to VGA. The 1400 Users Manual is available at
the Apple Web Site.

Re: hardware for powerpoint (summary)

2002-10-31 Thread Roger Volk
Rick,

You need the video card, the high density to DB15 cable(PowerBook video
adapter cable) that plugs into it, Apple part # M3927, and a DB15 to VGA
adapter.
The DB 15 connector is the old style Mac Monitor connection. The users manual
at the Apple Web site details the Process.

Gary,

As long as you don't use the machine in SSCI disk mode drive size is no
problem, if you use SSCI disk mode with a drive size over 3 GB your data may
get corrupted, This is a known problem with no work around, it's in the
firmware stored on the ROM.

Re: 3400c/180

2002-12-27 Thread Roger Volk
Lou,

The OS has to be off a general install CD, a PowerBook install CD or a
platform specific CD for the 3400. OS 8.6 is a good choice, but 32 meg is the
lower limit for memory, with 8.6 my startup is 20 meg for the system. My 3400
has the dual purpose modem/ether net card and requires an adapter/splitter,
accessories and memory are available at reasonable prices on the LEM list.

Re: Dead PB 150?

That battery is the pram battery and if it is dead has everything to do
with the computer not starting up, one of the things you can try is leave
the PB plugged into AC for a day or so and then try a startup or you can
just replace the battery as it may no longer hold a charge.

PB 3400c/240 startup problems

2003-04-02 Thread Roger Volk
I have a PB 3400c/240 that came to me in pieces. I reassembled it
and during reassembly I replaced the Pram battery as it was easy to do
at that point.

On power up the sleep light came on solid, reset the machine with
the button on the back, light went out, machine still would not startup,
even with command, option, power. Reset Power Manager, still no joy and
using the reset button on the rear of the machine only toggles the sleep
light on and off, my other 3400c stars up about 60 secs after resetting.

Anybody???:(

Thanks
Roger

PowerBook Batteries

2003-05-29 Thread Roger Volk
My Apologies, this got sent with the wrong subject line the first time.
Something I forgot to mention in my last post PowerBook batteries can be
rebuilt, two that I have used in the past are listed below, the Prime
Cell rebuild has been used for some time, Gadget Power Battery for a
PB180 was just ordered and is the cheaper of the two.

Re: Dead 140

2003-06-04 Thread Roger Volk
Brian,

The fuse you speak of is on the motherboard next to the battery
connector, it is a 5amp 125v surface mount. Usually the machine will
bootup with both a charged battery and AC adapter plugged in, have you
tried Booting up from a Norton utilities boot disk or an Apple disk tools
disk? I have tested, functioning mother and daughter boards that I'll let
go for $10.00 for the pair plus shipping. All the hardware will work on a
160 as will the memory card, I'm not sure about the screen, but I think
not.

Re: Question about a 180

2003-06-05 Thread Roger Volk
Craig,

Will it start up normally with nothing connected?, if it does check the
monitor control panel for proper setup, or you may have a bad adapter, this
adapter is designed to connect to an Apple display. If it won't display by
itself, could be interconnect board/cable or display itself.

There is a low power 680X0 series micro-processor responsible for
scanning the keyboard that could cause your problem and when this happens,
the troubleshooting guide calls for replacement of the logic board.

Re: PB 3400 Logic Board component level repair

2003-08-10 Thread Roger Volk
Tom,

I used the easter egg method and swapped, the PMU board, and PRAM battery
and then followed the troubleshooting logic in the Apple service manual.
Once I had completed that and tried swapping the keyboard the service manual
suggests replacing the logic board. Looking at the system architecture in
the developers notes for this machine points to this chip as the culprit,
it's a high density package with lots of leads.

PB 3400 Logic Board component level repair

2003-08-14 Thread Roger Volk
Hi

I have 2 PB 3400 logic boards (a 180, & a 240) that exhibit similar
symptoms, the disease is acute sleeping sickness, the device that is
probably the cause is the PMU IC, a variation of the 68HC05 made for
Apple by Motorola. It's chip Number SC428009PV, 341S0187-B PMU, 1995
Apple, G73M0AVBZ9715. I have tried cross referencing everyone of these
numbers both on a Master Cross Reference List and on Motorola's list
with no joy, has anyone ever done any component level repairs on 3400's
and if so, who was your parts source?

Thanks
Roger

Re: My 3400c serial port doesn't work

2003-08-14 Thread Roger Volk
Stuart,

The IC responsible is the O'Hare IC but I wasn't able to cross this to an
actual device on the Logic board. My suggestion would mirror Mad Dogs, and add
cleaning the connector with contact cleaner not an etching solution.

You don't pull the PCMCIA cage, you pull the brightness and speaker
grill module, there is a single # 8 Torx above and to the left of center of

If I remember right the area's you describe have galvinized steel in the

powdery combined with rust thats probably the case. I have several of these

the cause was a spill.

You need a video adapter for the Power Book, it adapts the HD plug on
the PB to a standard Apple video plug. I've seen them reasonably priced on
the LEM list. Let me know how this works out as I aquired on of the same

That's a good place to start, but if that does not cure the problem,
failed components on the logic board can cause the same symptoms. Also

kaldav,

Zapping the PRAM and resetting the power manager certainly won't hurt and may
fix the problem, but the problem may lie with the low power 68XXX micro-processor
responsible for controlling the power and sleep modes as well as scanning the
keyboard, in which case the unit gradually cease to function, but by all means do
the resets.

Just finished dealing with a problem with exactly the same symptoms,
the cause was the board mounted pico fuse mounted on the logic board, next

I also isolated this problem on 2 other machines I bought on the LEM list.

Re: 160 display/monitor??

2004-03-03 Thread Volk (contractor)
Grace,

There are video cable connections in the area of the adjustment sliders
internal to the machine, the problem could also lie with the main interconnect
cable to the upper and lower halves of the machine. For directions on
disassembly go to http://www.academ.com/info/macintosh and go to the Powerbook
section. Other good info can be had from http://www.lowendmac.com/, MacFixit,
and The Mac Freak site. For Power Manager problems with this series of
machines http://www.westwind.com/reference/TN/PMreset.html has the info, in
fact you might want to try this first.

Good Luck :-)

I would imagin that someone on the LEM list hasthe adapter(HDI 30 to DB25

Grace,

When you open the machine, have the hinge side facing you, gently open the
case after removing the screws in the bottom and the little one by the modem
port and use a finger to gently separate the plug that connects the upper half
to the lower half after this point the rest of the investigation is straight
forward, the video cables are ribbon cables and have a sliding latch on each
socket, I use a jewelers screwdriver to carefully pry up each side of the
clip. While your inside check the pram battery.

This a common problem with older LCD screens and will worsen with age,
tiny amounts of moisture have pentrated the bond at the screen edge, and

The right chemical for the job is not MEK(methyl ethyl ketone) it is
methyl choride, available as Ambroide Pro Weld at hobby shops, MEK is also

Tom,

If you're looking at the top side of the motherboard there 2 large high
density chips near the center of the board, one of them is labeled PMU that is
the bad chip, I also have several bad 3400 logic boards with this same
problem, the primary symptom of the problem is usually that the computer won't
wake up, even after a hard restart, this is due to the multfunctionality of
the chip. I have been unable to locate a source for this part and since all
the boards I have are exhibiting the same symptoms part swapping is not a
solution.

Re: 3400c Sleep Hiccups

2004-05-07 Thread Volk (contractor)
Mark,

Reset the power manager(push the reset buton on the rear of the
machine),Zap the PRAM, Check the PRAM battery, Replace the power supply
board, kind of in that order, if none of these work, your 3400 is
developing sleeping sickness, the problem is the PMU chip ( a 68HC05) on
the main logic board, along with it's PMU functions:

The power management unit (PMU) is a 68HC05 microprocessor that
operates
with its own RAM and ROM. The PMU IC performs the following functions:
controls sleep and power on and off sequences
controls power to the other ICs
controls clock signals to the other ICs
 supports the ADB
 scans the keyboard
 controls display brightness
 monitors battery charge level
 controls battery charging

So when this chip starts to malfunction, it is time to replace the
logic board as I have been unable to find a source for the Apple programed
part andd have 3 units with the same problem.

Good Luck

Brian,

Reset the power manager(push the reset buton on the rear of the
machine),Zap the PRAM, Check the PRAM battery, Replace the power supply
board, if none of these work, your 3400 is developing sleeping sickness,
the problem is the PMU chip ( a 68HC05) on the main logic board, along with
it's PMU functions:
The power management unit (PMU) is a 68HC05 microprocessor that operates
with its own RAM and ROM. The PMU IC performs the following functions:
controls sleep and power on and off sequences
controls power to the other ICs
controls clock signals to the other ICs
 supports the ADB
 scans the keyboard
 controls display brightness
 monitors battery charge level
 controls battery charging

So when this chip starts to malfunction, it is time to replace the
logic board as I have been unable to find a source for the Apple programed
part andd have 3 units with the same problem.

Good Luck
Roger

Believe the part you are actually seeking is the power supply board, the PMU
is actually a chip on the logic board. I have 3 machines with a similar problem
and used the same troubleshooting mechanism you did, without resolution. The
first machine I fixed, I did so by replacing the Power supply Board, the other 3
were no joy (the procedure we're using is also the same as recommended in the
