so maybe something is wrong with the cardcage?

I would suggest sticking the card in a camera and then reformat it, just in
case the 520 did something subtle to the card.

Then put it in your Tri-Media reader, select the card on the desktop, choose
erase from the Special Menu, and make sure to select Mac formatting. This
should create a Mac volume that you can then use.

They exist. I've seen them on eBay. When I had a PB1400 I recalled seeing a
solar panel listed there. It started at $25 with a Buy-It-Now price of $50.
I pondered buying it for a day and went back only to find someone had put an
opening bid of $25 on it. So I watched the auction which surprisingly ended
with a selling price right at $150!

After checking out the specs on the panel I found that it could only charge
a battery outside of the PowerBook, which meant you either had to have a
second battery or you didn't use it while it charged. The panel didn't
directly power the unit.

The leather ones were cool too as well as denim ones and even one with a
bullet hole in it (honest!). I liked the clear cover mine came with and made
my own custom inserts, like family photos, a company logo, etc. I changed it
about once a month.

I seem to recall someone getting a USB card to work with a non-cardbus

Keep in mind that VM works by allotting a segment of your hard drive, equal
to the size you set VM to in the memory control panel. What is does is
create an invisible file on your hard drive. As such, if you were able to
set VM at 1GIG, you would loose that amount of space on your drive.

That would be a lot of space to kiss good-by ;^)

With a GIG-O-RAM, I would think you could launch all of your applications

Heck, I only (ONLY!?!) have 288MB RAM on my Wallstreet and I've turned off

 get at this thing's innards?

It's very prudent of you to wait rather than force your 280c open. There are
some small plastic eyelets that are very often broken off in the process of
cracking open this or any Duo. They're right under your right palm, at the
front, right, corner where the top and bottom meet.

I would strongly recommend downloading a service manual for your Duo and
follow the steps carefully. Unfortunately I don't have a link to follow.

Pretty much all the Duos can be upgraded to a PPC by swapping out the logic
board with that of a 2300. Everything else will match up. However you will
need one of the high output AC adapters (36 watt rather than 25) and there
may be an issue of heat if the stiffener/frame/chassis inside doesn't make
good contact with the processor. With the PPC upgrade you can install a much
larger, cheaper IDE drive (which will require an IDE ribbon cable).

As to your sound problem, the speaker gets power from the same ribbon cable
that goes to the LCD screen. Perhaps the connection at the speaker, or where
the video cable connects to the logic board is not properly seated. Or it
could be a software problem (sound out selection in control panel etc.). You
may try to zap the PRAM and see if that resets any defaults related to
sound.

OOOpppsss!!! I realized that I read your comment wrong. While there probably
isn't a special driver for the PB, I don't have a driver on the PB at all,
and the driver that came with it came on a CD, and of course the PB has no
CD. So getting the driver installed will be a small PITA. That's why I opted
for spending an extra $30 to bypass the Zips completely and go the route of
 PCMCIA CF card.

Just FYI. When I've needed to install software on a PowerBook without
CD-ROM, I've just put the CD in my iMac, shared the CD, and then mounted the
CD on the PowerBooks desktop (or any other Mac for that matter) via
ethernet. Then it installs just as if the CD were actually in the PowerBook.
I've even done OS updates this way.

It has saved me the hassle of connecting a CD-ROM drive to the PowerBook
which on older PowerBooks can be frustrating at times (SCSI voodoo).

Of course this still requires an ethernet option. In a pinch though, you can
use LocalTalk, but then of course that won't work with an iMac, you would
need a Mac with a serial port.

 Morgan

If you just want to do transfers between the 190 and the iMac, I would
suggest a PCMCIA ethernet card. Then it's just a matter of transferring from
Mac-to-Mac rather than from media-to-Mac-to-media-to-Mac (huh?). Plus an
ethernet card can be found for a third of the price you're looking to pay.

I recently picked up a new-in-box Global Village PowerPort Platinum Pro
modem/ethernet card for under $25. Not only do I have the benefit of 10T
ethernet but I also have a 28.8 modem for going online when away from home.

I bought this one for a PB5300 but it will work with any PowerBook having a
PCMCIA slot. I used to use this same arrangement with a PB1400 I had. I
would transfer digital images from a SmartMedia card, via a PCMCIA adapter,
to my G4 at work (or G3 at home). I just mounted the G4 drive on my
PowerBook's desktop, and then drug the images from the card to the G4 drive
(I still do this with my Wallstreet but it has the benefit of having built
in ethernet).

I am not that familiar with the PB3400. I would suspect after a fall that
some card and/or connector came loose. With the PB5300 it was normally
the Ram card that came loose, however from a fall just about anything
could have came loose. I would disconnect any connectors you can easily
get to and firmly reattach them. I would also unseat and reseat any cards
that you can get to. If the 3400 is internally laid out like the 5300,
then it would be very easy to unseat the power module when installing a
 new hard drive.

If the buzzing were mechanical I would suspect something amiss with the
hard drive. If the buzzing was generated through the speakers, I would
suspect the sound card, which on many PowerBooks is also the power card.
Depending on how the book fell, the battery jamming into the compartment
may have bent the battery connector pins so that they are not making good
 contact with the battery.

Opening PowerBooks will often upset their restarting and a reset is
needed. I am not sure what the button/key sequence for the 3400 is. For
many older PowerBooks it was necessary to preform the reset many many
 times.

William makes a good point. The RAM installs just the same way in a 3400 as
it does in a 5300 (also a 190 3500/Kanga). Removing the keyboard and palm
rest (to get to the drive) could have further loosened it. I've had a PB 190
and a PB 5300 just sit a stare at me because of loose RAM. Try reseating it
or just remove it temporarily.

The same holds true with the power supply board which is located directly
under the trackpad and partially covered by the hard drive bracket. A fall
could have jogged it loose. Then the process of opening up the 3400 to
replace the drive could have further unseated it.

There could also be a number of other issues that are causing the problem.
It may be just plain broke. The logic board could have a cracked circuit, or
the AC connector could be loose, or there could be a problem with the media
bay contacts (try removing the floppy drive or CD-ROM) or the card cage
could be unseated or...well, the list goes on.

Definitely reset the Power Manager after each troubleshooting step.
According to the manual, unplug the AC from the 3400, remove the battery,
hold the reset button down for one minute (located on the back next to the
ethernet/modem port). Then plug the AC back in a replace the battery.

Definitely upgrade to OS8.1 for now. When you get more RAM, go to 8.6. Maybe
even OS9.1 (but not 9 or 9.0.4). OS9.1 ran nicely when I had my 1400 (and is
doing surprisingly well on my Duo2300 w/44MB RAM).

If you can find a 48MB module, you'll find yourself paying through the nose
for it. I would suggest two 24MB modules stacked. Check out www.datamem.com
for more memory.

I've never used a compact flash card for virtual memory but I hear it does
nicely. It will have to be larger than the installed RAM to work. Actually
it will have to be at least as large as whatever you set virtual memory for
since normally virtual memory reserves a portion of the volume (hard drive)
equal to the size it is set at.

I don't know what size drive you have in it at the moment but if you plan to
photo editing, get something bigger. Another advantage to a newer, larger
drive will be the fact that it will be faster, which will improve the speed
somewhat. Especially if you're opening pictures of any substantial size.

One note, when I put a newer drive in the 1400 I used to own, I found that
the mounting holes don't line up. I just laid an inch square piece of foam
rubber on top of the drive. It was thick enough so that when you reinstalled
the keyboard, it applied some pressure to the drive and just held it in
place. I didn't make it larger than that as it would have acted as an
insulating blanket and overheated the drive.

I don't know what to suggest for a best value image editing/optimizing
application, but PhotoShop 4.0 ran nicely on my 1400.

I think Fetch is still one of the best FTP programs available for the Mac.
Go to versiontracker.com to locate the latest version for download.

my memory form them including a 32MB for a PB1400c I previously owned. They
include a lifetime warranty and the best service I've ever received.

If you have 42MB RAM in yours, and you have a factory installation if 16MB,
then you have something wrong with your 1400. There is no way to achieve and
install of 42MB with any combination of available memory modules in or out
of production (that I am aware of). The closest I can estimate is 40MB or
48MB.

16+24=40
16+32=48
16+8+8=32
16+8+16=40
16+8+24=44
16+16+16=48

If you have an original install of 12MB (only found on an original base

still no 42MB total available.

You may want to double check your memory or test your RAM.

the same polarity. Best to be certain you've got it right before you plug
 anything in.

 I have an OEM 120 VAC 60Hz 15W, Output: AC 9V 1
 Amp

It is an AC adapter. there IS no polarity on AC adapters.

So there's no need to worry about the polarity of the jack that plugs into
the back of the PowerCD Player? It doesn't matter if the inner or outer
contact of the jack is positive or negative? The PowerCD player can auto
sense this (or something)?

I think I can take a stab at this: my GUESS is that your abttery pack is set
 up
to deliver 4.5 volts DC twice, that is, each bank of 3 AA cells
 delivers 4.5 VDC
to the player, because that way you can double the current of the AA cells,
 and
still keep the package fairly slim ( as opposed to say, using 3 C cells).

That would explain the 9VAC supply, which when rectified to DC, will
 deliver 4.5
VDC as well. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it...

As Goofy is fond of saying; uhh-yhup.

 I don't know...the memory consumption isn't much different between 8.6 and 9.1
anyway, so I'd just leave 9.1 on there. As far as networking capability,
 there's little difference between 9 and 8.6, so that's a wash, I think.

I have a PowerBook Duo2300 (actually a 280c with 2300 mobo and IDE drive)
which I recently installed OS9.1 on. It has only 44MB RAM and is 100MHz with
no L2 cache. I was surprised at how well it ran on this pokey machine! It
only uses 14.7MB RAM and seems to run a bit better than OS8.6, BUT, I
haven't had much chance to run it through the paces with some real world
applications either.

Since it's just something to play with right now (I use a Wallstreet
regularly) I'm not that concerned about speed with it. However since it's
doing better than I thought it would, I'm planning to install OS9.1 on my
5300cs and see how it does.

I had one that I retired many years ago. I packed it back up in the original
box with all the original packing, software, manuals and inserts. In late
1999 I was cruising eBay and saw how much they were going for. Typically
$100-150 at the time. None in boxes.

I figured I would dig mine out of the attic, blow the dust off and see what
I could sell it for.

The winning bid...$475! I was a bit stunned too.

I got emails from Japan and Hong Kong begging me to consider shipping it
there (auction stated USA only). The new owner was thrilled with it...but
probably not as thrilled as I was to get $475 out of it, especially since I
had paid less than half that years before.

BTW, it's a charcoal grey (same as the PowerBook 100 series of the day) and
2 speed. You could connect it to your stereo and play CDs, or to your TV and
play Kodak Photo CDs. All via a very cool remote control. Oh yeah, you could
also connect it to your Mac via SCSI. It had one 50 pin connector on the
removable base but you couldn't operate it at all if it was removed from the
base...kinda dumb.

Oddly, it was a dud when Apple brought it out. Perhaps it was priced too
high.

Apologies. The way it read to me, I thought you were stating that you got

I would say 9-10 hours would be typical of any PowerBook running 3 new and
one old battery. I get about 1.5-2 hours out of my 3 year old battery.

If I could afford 3 new batteries for this Wallstreet, I could run 2

-makmac

Here is how to reset the 1400, quoted from Apple's TIL:
-
Resetting the Power Manager

1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
2. Restart the computer by holding down the reset button on the back,
Between the ADB and Serial ports, for 10-20 seconds.
3. If the computer does not restart, repeat step 2 three or four times.

Resetting the Power Manager and PRAM
Resetting the parameter RAM (PRAM) when the computer is shut down also
resets Power Manager. The following process resets both the Power Manager
and the parameter RAM.

1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
2. Make sure the Caps Lock key is not down.
3. Restart the computer. Immediately after hearing the startup sound,
simultaneously press and hold Command-Option-P-R. (If you do not hold down
the key combination within 5-10 seconds after the computer restarts, you
must repeat steps 1-3.)
4. Hold down the keys until you hear the startup sound again. Then release
the keys.
5. If the computer shuts itself off, press the reset button on the back of
the computer to turn it back on. (See chart above for location of the reset
button for your PowerBook series.)
6. When the computer has finished starting up, restore any custom settings
for the desktop pattern, memory, network, AppleTalk, trackpad, power
conservation, and so forth.

I never said it wasn't worth it's weight. As a matter of fact,
pound-for-pound you get more for your money in a 3400. That's one of the
points I was making. Having hauled a 1400 and a 3500 (a Kanga, same
weight/form factor) around on my shoulder the small difference can be
significant.

As a matter of fact, I came to this realization one day while hoisting my
briefcase with 3500 to my shoulder and wincing at the pain going from my
shoulder to the base of my skull. Until that moment I thought the ache was
stress related. I now alternate shoulders.

Strangely enough, I now own the heaviest PowerBook know to man, a Wallstreet
with 14.1 screen. I'm such a slouch ;^)

I really loved the 1400 when I had it. Especially after the 400MHz Sonnet
upgrade! What a screamer. Plus the keyboard was the best of any PowerBook
I've owned (including a Duo230, Duo280, Duo2300, PB190, PB5300, PB1400,
PB3500 Wallstreet).

If I were to buy another pre-G3 PowerBook, hands down, it would be the
1400c/166. While there is a memory limitation of 64MB, it was never a
problem, perhaps since it wasn't my primary Mac.

The thing that got peoples attention the most was the picture of my family
on the lid of the 1400. The BookCover feature is truly unique.

2001-08-27 Thread makmac

I am interested in purchasing a laptop for my 14 year old daughter and am
looking for recommendations related to either the PB 1400 or 3400. While I
am sure that she would prefer an Indigo iBook 366 or a G3 Wallstreet system,
these systems are not in my budget.

I have seen the 1400c (or cs) 166 listed on lowendmac.com as a good choice
and appreciate the ability to upgrade to a G3/333 or 400 at a relatively low
cost. The negatives I see are the lack of an Ethernet card, limited (64MB)
 RAM capacity and 33.6 modem.

The 3400 is attractive largely due to the 200 or 240Mhz speed, built-in
 Ethernet and higher RAM capacity.

I expect that whatever I buy will be used largely for school work (mostly MS
Word using Office 98), web surfring with IE 5.0 and IMing her friends.

While I have considered a desktop Mac, we already have two and a laptop
seems like the best idea. I have also thought about a Wintel machine, but
would prefer to stay with Apple. My budget is around $500, but would go
higher for the right system. I have seen 3400s on eBay for $450-600 and
 1400s for $300-500.

I hope your daughter has very strong shoulders. The 3400 is one of the
heaviest PowerBooks Apple made (along with the 3500 Kanga Wallstreet) and
thick as a brick. This would probably be the only drawback I would see.

If I were buying for my daughter (although she's 13) I would probably buy
the 1400c/166. I had a 1400c/133 and loved it. I also added a G3 at a later
date. It's more compact and, in my opinion, engineered better. Same screen
resolution of 800x600 but an inch smaller. You can get a Global village
56k/10T ethernet card for them or buy separate cards. I loved the keyboard
on my 1400, which is infinitely better than the one on the
190/5300/3400/3500 (all the same).

If you do decide to go for more bulk, then why don't you spend a few more
bucks and get the Kanga G3. I went from my 1400 to the Kanga. The prices are
dropping on those and you can probably get one for $500-600.

It took me a while to realize that the sharp pain running from my shoulder
to the base of my skull was from the strap of my brief case. I've since
started switching shoulders. That Kanga was heavy (same weight as the 3400)
and I only toted the thing from my car to my office. Will she be carrying
this around school? She had better have a backpack or even one of those
nifty 2 wheel bags kids are using now.

One other note. The 3400/3500 use a combo modem/ethernet card and require a
special dongle and system extension to use. Both are limited to 33.6k.

PCMCIA CD-ROM for older Powerbooks

2001-08-25 Thread makmac

Anybody know if this CD-ROM drive can be made to work with older PowerBooks?
At $50 the price seems right. CNF Model: JK-6061.

http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=jk-6061

Of course there is no mention of Mac software but that's never stopped us!

I buy all my memory from them.

So far for a PB1400, iMac, Wallstreet, Beige G3/MT and PPC8500.

I had a problem with the PB1400 memory about 3 months after buying it. After
spending less than 5 minutes on the phone with tech support (including hold
time!) they agreed there was a problem and sent a replacement out overnight.
They picked up the bad memory about a week later via UPS Ground. All this at
their expense.

That was my first purchase from them (in January this year) and I have gone,
and will go, back to them for all my memory purchases. They are typically
the lowest or within a few dollars of the lowest. I will pay a few extra
dollars when necessary for this kind of service.

They have a 540MB for the 190/5300/3400 but I would bet dollars to doughnuts

Just FYI, if you can connect the 520 to another Mac via ethernet you can do
the install. I put my OS8.1 installer CD in my iMac and shared it. I then
connected via ethernet to the iMac and mounted the CD to my PB190's desktop
(the 190 has an '040 processor). Then I just ran the installer from the CD
and upgraded from 7.5.5 to 8.1 just that easily.

I have to agree with the 1400. When I had mine, I was the most impressed

Although the latest Rev. F feels best.

I currently use a Wallstreet which is pretty nice but I still like the
tactile feel of the 1400 best. I also have a 5300c, 190cs, Duo280c, Duo230

the same so-so keyboard as the 5300/190 series. Actually, the 140 has a very
nice keyboard as do the other 100 series PowerBooks.

When I connect the set-up I cant get any icons of shared files on the

I sense that the machnes are physically aware of each other. There are hard

I have tried different things with swiching which is the server etc - no
breakthrough. So, we continue with ye ole serial cable, the nine year old

These are basic questions but I figure I should ask.
Is AppleTalk on?
Do you have file sharing active on both machines?
And, have you shared the drive you want to connect with on each machine?

You don't need to do anything with TCP/IP.

Yes. I just recently swapped a motherboard from a 5300 (greyscale) that had
been damaged, into a 190cs. It was a direct swap of the internal components.
All the cables connected right up (i.e. keyboard, trackpad, screen, PRAM
battery, hard drive, etc.).

You really need a service manual though as there are quite a few parts and
you need to disassemble/reassemble it in the proper order.

Everything works like a charm.

You can use the cable with or without the Mini EN/SC. The Mini requires a
SCSI ID like you would any other SCSI device. It also has an AC adapter for
power. It's definitely the more useful of the two but is best left behind if
 you have additional devices connected.

The Mini EN/SC has a single DB-25 but it can of course be put at the
end of the SCSI chain. The regular EN/SC has two DB-25 connectors
and can be in the middle of the chain.

That's odd. I just got around to checking mine. I have two of the Mini EN/SC
10T's, one for PowerBook and one for use with the standard 25 pin system
connector on the back of a Mac. Both cables have pass-through connectors.
The SCSI to ethernet converter box connecting to the cables on each are
identical.

The one with a built-in a PowerBook SCSI connector is a Micro EN/SC.
The Mini EN/SC has a single DB-25. What any cables that might come
with it has I couldn't say, I only have the adapters.

The Mini EN/SC comes with the pass through cable which is like a T. On one
end is a standard 25 pin connector (or 30 pin PowerBook connector) that
plugs into the Mac. At the other end of the cable is a pass-through
connector. On one side of the pass-through is connect the Mini EN/SC. On the
other side of the pass-through you can connect a standard 25 pin cable thus
enabling you to daisy chain SCSI devices. You can put it at the beginning or
end of the chain.
