That's what the IBM superscaler machine at Lawrence Livermore does ...
simulate nuclear explosions.

If you look up the LLNL web site, you will find that LLNL has lots of
software available which can simulate all kinds of things.

The nuclear stuff is not available, of course, but LLNL has a very good
simulator for chemical explosives.

They will freely license it to folks who have legitimate uses, such as
fireworks manufacturers.

Casual makers of ANFO (ammonium nitrate-fuel oil) explosives, such as
terrorists, need not apply ... unless, of course, you can prove you are a
legitimate user of same, as was my family's former company, a limestone
mining concern, where we had been using ANFO in preference to dynamite
for decades, on account of the lower cost of ANFO.

Contrary to popular belief, decommissioned 'puters from LLNL, etcetera,
do NOT glow in the dark.

However, a lot of their machinery is indeed buried in place, due to
traces of U and Pu.

LEM Swap mailing list.
USENET forsale newsgroups.
eBay auctions.
Craigslist.
other auctions.
Flea markets.

Not necessarily in that order. ;P

Auctions can be very interesting. Look for the ones that close in the
wee hours of the mornings. They often close lower.

Best are the electronics swap meets around Silicon Valley, although any
area where Apple or other computer manufacturers have a physical presence
(Austin ?) could be good candidates.

Also, "ham" radio swap meets could be good, too.

Another tip ...

The various "National Laboratories" (Lawrence Livermore, Lawrence
Berkeley, Los Alamos, Brookhaven, etcetera) often sell PMs and PBs in
large lots.

Used to be that an individual could bid on a pallet lot, but those days
are long gone, and now only authorized bidders are allowed to bid.

However, all these machines are "decommissioned" in a most brutal way,
and the media bays, along with the hard drives are removed and thrown
into the crusher. Sometimes the RAM is crushed as well.

Usually, these machines are top-of-the line ... but the absence of media
(and possibly RAM), coupled with the fact that to get at the HD media one
must remove the CPU cooler, often results on a machine which is 95
percent complete, but lacks some very hard to get parts.

Usually the 14.1" displays are perfect, but the keyboard latches are
usually bent as the "reclaimers" have not yet discovered that one can
remove the keyboard simply by removing the battery and media bay, and
then releasing the latches.

The National Labs are discarding Wallstreets and B&Ws at an alarming rate
right now.

A year or so ago, 9600s, 8600s and Beige G3s were being discarded. All of
these are now long gone.

Only a very few graphites are coming out of the Labs right now.

And, none of the more recent PBs ... no Pismos or later, and only a very
few Lombards. But, LOTS of Wallstreets.

3400s are tough cookies to crack.

You could try modifying a 190/5300 hard drive bracket.

I am parting out a 3400 right now.

The motherboard, which had been converted to Cardbus, and the hard drive
bracket and cable are already gone, but most of the other parts remain
available.

If I still have a RAM card for this machine, then it is a small capacity
one, not the rare, large capacity one which was also usable on the 3500
(Kanga).

Good source of used computers

2005-06-18 Thread Doc Holliday
Go for a Lombard 400 MHz with built-in DVD decoder and its accompanying
DVD drive.

DVD playback is flawless, unlike the add-on decoder of the Wallstreet
(any) or the 333 MHz Lombard.

10.3.9 installed flawlessly on my Lombard, unlike the install using
Xpostfacto on my several Wallstreets.

Yes, I run 10.3.9 on my B&Ws, too.

I've had little luck reusing the systems which came with the machines
(i.e., doing an "upgrade" to 10.3.9), so I always wipe the drives clean
and install 9.2.2, using the arduous 9.0.4 -> 9.1 -> 9.2.1 -> 9.2.2
upgrade path. Then and only then do I put 10.3.9 on.

Sort of off topic, but...

Would anyone care to share what their sources of listings for used
PowerBooks and Power Macs is?

I just got started collecting 603e PowerBooks and have been frustrated with
the fact the LEM swap list is still not open for new subscriptions and the
selection on eBay has been dismal. I am, also, looking for a "parts" machine
to cannibalize for the two 3400c's (I have an upstairs and downstairs
machine), particularly the hard drive bracket, replacement trackpad/palm
rest assembly and some used RAM.

Thanks.
