Re: Pismo...upside down logo

2005-06-02 Thread Tom and Lisa P
(Re-post: It looks like my email got lost somewhere in the ether the
other day - it didn't bounce, but I never saw it turn up on the
list).

Of course, this is topic is so completely off-topic for this list...
Having said that, let me contribute to the collective delinquency!
;-)

I own three Wallstreets (a 292, a 233 series II, and a 266). None
of them glowed out of the box (not in the same way as a Pismo,
anyway, which can be seen in a normally lit room in the daytime). A
Wallstreet might faintly glow if you view it from the rear in a
completely black environment, but that's only by accident. That's
because the foam and mylar sheet between the backlight and the logo
aren't 100% opaque (they're close to it though, maybe 95%).

On one of my Wallstreets, the only modification necessary to make
the logo glow was simply the removal of a mylar sticker from the
backside of the logo. On the other, I needed to remove the sticker
and trim back some of the foam spacer to allow the light through. I
haven't bothered to make the third glow.

In very bright direct sunlight with the LCD at lower backlight
brightnesses, sometimes there will be a yellowish blotch in the
center of the LCD where the sunlight shines through the logo more
brightly than the backlight lights the LCD.

Setting up some LEDs around the logo is a simple thing to do. I've
investigated the possibility of moving the sleep LED to the logo (or
adding a 2nd LED in addition to the primary LED) There's plenty of
space between the plastic of the lid and the backlight. Some of the
foam may have to be trimmed back on individual models, however.

Mad Dog, does this answer some of your questions?

Peace,
Drew

Does that involve cutting out some of the foil on the back of the

But concern over an " upside down " ( who is to say which side is up? " logo

Take your Wallstreet, with LCD at full brightness, into a completely dark,
windowless bathroom or closet or something. You'll see that it does in fact
glow, if I remember correctly. I had a Wallstreet and I'm pretty sure it
glowed, just nowhere near as brightly as G4s do. In fact, I remember
thinking "gee wiz this thing is pretty dim"

Note that the inversion of the logo was more or less at the same time
as the logo backlighting. Which makes sense, if you are going to
light it, it should be "right side up" when lit.

Rumor has it that some TV show or movie rigged a Mac to illuminate
the backlight and when someone at Apple saw it they decided it would
be a good idea to do it for all of them.

Glowing is not enough,
Spinning and perhaps blinking,
Now these are important considerations.

Chain driven so as to always be right side up.
Spinning at optimal RPM. And blinking. Now that will draw much more attention
than simply being upside down.

It is oh, SO important !

Uh. . . . this will require a razor saw from the hobby shop or a
Dremel tool with saw blade . Patience, a steady hand and a
willingness to work with plastic.
Draw a perfect square around the logo. Cut it out. Flip it 180
degrees and use an MEK based or other appropriate solvent glue to
weld it back together.
Then fine sandpaper to finish. Some case modders use bead blasting

Re: Pismo...upside down logo

2005-05-28 Thread Dan K
Anyone see this thread as a tad silly . . . errr, no? Hmmm . . .
right then . . .

I think cutting out the old logo, the new hole being a larger 'upside
down' . . . err, right-side-up logo is the cleanest solution. As for the
'insert' to use in the new larger hole - I've checked all the 'Book
display-back Apple logos from clamshell iBook to 17" AlBook and none are
large enough to cover a WS/Lombard/Pismo's old Apple logo's outline.
Everything I have from dual USB iBook and first gen TiBook up to the revs
A/B 12" and 17" AlBooks are identically sized, but the clamshell's Apple
is the largest of all by a small margin.

Therefore, unless there's some 'Book I've overlooked, one would likely
need to fabricate a new larger Apple insert for that factory look some of
y'all seem to crave.

How about using the Apple logo inserts from the side of a B+W form-factor
desktop? Now there's a statement! Sadly, color choices are limited to
blue and a couple shades of gray. Hmm, I don't have any recent Apple
desktop displays, are any of those logos appropriate?

Just had another (silly) thought or two . . . if one cut out the old
Apple's surround as a circle, one could fab some sort of
spinning/rotating thinga-ma-bob where one could turn the Apple anytime to
any orientation one desired. Now how's that for a complete solution?!?!
Oo, oo, how about having it motorized somehow, so that it
turns 180 degrees when you open the lid!?!!? And back again when you shut
it?!?!?! Or even just constantly whirls when ever you have the lid
open?!?!? Alright, nobody steal that idea, that's a winner that one is!!

See, this _is_ a silly thread, I've just ensured its silliness!

I also don't see why it's such a big deal about the Apple logo being upside
down when it's open. In my opinion, which accounts for not a whole lot, the
logo orientation is part of Apple's "Think Different" campaign.

Re: Pismo...upside down logo

2005-05-27 Thread Jennifer Worgan
place Pismo logo side down on a good color copier
copy
cut out the logo with enough background color to cove the original logo
treat the surface with spray acylic or laminate
glue over top of old logo in any direction you want it

alternative
glue the botton of a snap on top of original logo
glue a hammered thin piece of lead or solder wire to the back of the bottom
edge of the new logo
glue to of snap to the new logo copy made above
lubricate top of snap with something like WD-40
snap on to top
for protection from rub against other objects - glue a clear plastic or
glass dome such as the glass/plastic on analog watches (from a cheap watch)
over the logo/snap apparatus.

if the snap is lubricated adequately and free moving, the weight (hammered
thin piece of lead or solder wire) should be pulled by gravity downward
keeping the logo upright with regards to the ground when opened

a lightweight spring could be added underneath the logo to return it
original (or desired) position when flat

cost::
snap, glue, sping, cheap watch, color copy - under $10

the envy of other Pismo owners with logos that appear upside down when open
? ...but probably not price less

Simple, lower the lid, note that the Apple is right side up, give
them a funny look and go back to what you were doing.
