Can't reinstall it. Don't have it on floppy. And I don't have a floppy drive
hooked up to my iMac to make a floppy version from the CD version I have.
Can't d/l it because I can't get online with a browser to d/l it. Catch-22.

>tell your mother-in-law to add an account name to her account (she's

Believe me, I know more about AOL than I care to. Was one of the very first
subscribers years and years and years ago--1991 I think. Already thought of
this option, but my mother-in-law is vacationing and away from a computer
for another month or so (can you believe being offline for that
long??!!!). Anyway, that option will not work right now. Yes, I could
call and get her password, but her user name is also too long. So going the
AOL route is just off the list of possibilities right now.

And no, it's not worth installing AOL on my iMac and calling her for her
account info and me setting up another account on her account while she is
away. That's just a lot of futzing. I think I have a much easier
workaround.

At this point in time, I am just going to wait for the Compact Flash card
and USB CF/SM reader to arrive Just got the PCMCIA CF adaptor today. It
seems to be a far smaller headache than taking the PB directly online at
this point. The CF card and CF/SM reader are due to arrive Thursday or
Friday, Saturday at the latest. So I just have to hold tight until then.
Patience...ugh!

If I want to make the PB capable of being online at some point in time,
updating browsers and such will be far easier via and CF card, I think.

I am a little concerned that the USB CF/SM reader is a reader only and not
also a writer, but I did a little research and it SEEMS that I should be
able to drag and drop over to the reader from my iMac. I am keeping my
fingers crossed, anyway. If not, I'll just sell this reader and get a
reader/writer. I only paid $10 for this one, so I know I can sell it and get
back what I paid for it.

Once I finally get the CF card and reader, I'll report in on how it all
works out just in case someone else on the list is interested.

Thanks,
Morgan

Sotell your mother-in-law to add an account name to her account (she's
allowed 7 names) that is 7 characters or less. Then try to access THAT new
name which will be useable in that earlier version of AOL . She signs up the
name with a password she tells you. YOU sign in with that new name and PW.
You will be sharing HER main account. I share my account with my sister--and
she lives in another state. The only caveat is that we cannot be signed on
simultaneously. You will be able to send and retrieve email but the browser
in that version is extremely limited in function. You can run AOL version 3
on earlier computers (the browser is somewhat better). You cannot run the
latest version because it requires a PPC. I can't remember whether version
4 requires PPC or not.

Well, tonight I tried to get the PB online. It does get online through my
dial-up ISP that I am about to turn off in a few days, but now I can't get
the Netscape browser to work. So there's an old old version of (pooey pooey
I HATE to even say this) AOL (v. 2.7!) that I decided to try. My
mother-in-law has an account that I can access. Well, no go there because
the account name has more letters in it than version 2.7 will allow. So
that's out.

Connecting the Zip has just become WAY too complicated, and now I am glad
that winging their way to me are a CF card, CF PCMCIA adapter, and CF/SM USB
reader for my iMac. Just seems like this is going to be the easiest solution
afterall...glad I found the deals/steals on eBay to make it happen!!!

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Anyone else using the route of CF media with their old PB?

Crossover is mirror image, the other is identical.

Start up one machine.
Turn on AppleTalk. Choose Ethernet.
Start up the other machine.
Turn on AppleTalk. Choose Ethernet.

You may have to restart the first machine. Maybe not, though.

That should be it. You can now mess with the File Sharing control panel
to choose who can access and what they can access.

Select Chooser on one machine.
Click on AppleShare.
Choose the other machine.
Type in the name and pw for the machine.
Click OK.

Now you're connected...

Just FYI. When I've needed to install software on a PowerBook without
CD-ROM, I've just put the CD in my iMac, shared the CD, and then mounted the
CD on the PowerBooks desktop (or any other Mac for that matter) via
ethernet. Then it installs just as if the CD were actually in the PowerBook.
I've even done OS updates this way.

It has saved me the hassle of connecting a CD-ROM drive to the PowerBook
which on older PowerBooks can be frustrating at times (SCSI voodoo).

Of course this still requires an ethernet option. In a pinch though, you can
use LocalTalk, but then of course that won't work with an iMac, you would
need a Mac with a serial port.

No, I didn't mean to imply there was. The reason I have two is because 2 or
3 years ago my business partner needed to hook the SCSI Zip she already had
up to the new non-SCSI iMac, and discovered it was within a few dollars to
purchase a new USB Zip as it was to purchase the SCSI to USB adapter. So,
since I now have two Zips, I can hook the SCSI Zip up to the PB190 and the
USB Zip up to the iMac.

But I have never really liked Zip. Just personal preference.

Well, my iMac is hardwired into an Xrouter wireless hub for cable modem
access, with an iBook with Airport card also accessing the cable modem. I
was looking into getting a wireless PCMCIA card, but they're about $80. I
wasn't sure how hooking up the PB via ethernet might work with the setup I
already have. I don't really need internet access on the PB.

I spent about $30 on a small (only 8MB) CF card, PCMCIA adapter, and USB
CF/SM reader, so I figure I got a pretty good deal. I won't really be
accessing the PB too much, mostly for an intense writing project in
November.

I decided against the VST Tri-Media Reader when I found the CF/SM reader for
$10 on eBay.

I am trying to make this all as portable and fuss free as possible, which is
why I was looking for a way to get around the Zips. I also think it's a
cheaper way of getting some backup storage for some of my files on my iMac,
since I now have everything I need and the CF cards are really cheap through
one online place I found.

But thanks for the suggestions!

If you just want to do transfers between the 190 and the iMac, I would
suggest a PCMCIA ethernet card. Then it's just a matter of transferring from
Mac-to-Mac rather than from media-to-Mac-to-media-to-Mac (huh?). Plus an
ethernet card can be found for a third of the price you're looking to pay.

I recently picked up a new-in-box Global Village PowerPort Platinum Pro
modem/ethernet card for under $25. Not only do I have the benefit of 10T
ethernet but I also have a 28.8 modem for going online when away from home.

I bought this one for a PB5300 but it will work with any PowerBook having a
PCMCIA slot. I used to use this same arrangement with a PB1400 I had. I
would transfer digital images from a SmartMedia card, via a PCMCIA adapter,
to my G4 at work (or G3 at home). I just mounted the G4 drive on my
PowerBook's desktop, and then drug the images from the card to the G4 drive
(I still do this with my Wallstreet but it has the benefit of having built
in ethernet).

Re: VST Tri-Media Reader

2001-10-14 Thread Donna Hood Pointer

I love my Tri-Media reader. Works beautifully. I just used it to pass some
data from my 520 to my iMac that was way too big to fit on a floppy and I
didn't have to find my ZIP drive connector and power down and connect it to
the 520 to do it. (That would have been my other option). You can just pop
out the CF PCMCIA holder just like you would a floppy by dragging it to the
trash, and then you pull the CF card out of the holder and put it in the
Tri-media reader. It would be great for passing info back AND forth between
the PB190 and your iMac because your PCMCIA is built-in on your PB190. Just
go and buy the holder at any place where they sell stuff for digital cameras
and get yourself a CompactFlash card. They are really coming down in price.
VERY CONVENIENT. I have a 64MB one. I wish I had bought bigger. Excellent
for transferring files to/from the iMac. I've done it. My cardcage on my
PB520 actually has two slots, so I guess I could actually plug another one
in the other slot if I had another holder. I do own another 64MB CF card,
but neither of them fit in my digital camera, which only takes 48MB max. The
transfer rate to the CF card might be somewhat faster on my 520 than on the
190 because I think I read someplace that the cardcage is connected directly
to the motherboard, but not so with the PC slot on the 190.

driver for the PB. Seems like the Tri-Media, CF card and PCMCIA adaptor
would be easier, although pricier since I already have the Zip drives. Any
suggestions?
