You misunderstood me.
For example, take one algo of copy protection which leaves a watermark on
a sector. When you try to optimize the volume, Norton runs fine by
ignoring it. They take it as a data. But TTP detects as a block error.
They used to repair it which of course damage the copy protection so the
application will not run anymore. Later they had to analyze the
signature of such so now TTP detects such, then it stops operation.
Since TTP Optimization runs on physical data, it cannot skip the sector
like Norton does.

I hope you understand the difference.

I don't agree with this.
You can optimize (defragment) your volumes, repair data, get back trashed
data, check the system files and so on AND you can check your harddisk
and much more on the hardware side.

When Norton tries to repair, it asks if you want to create a Undo file.
This is important. Without this, you won't be able to undo the damage
Norton creates.

There is no single best tool exists. It is better to have them all.
- DiskWarrior is designed to do only one thing, optimize/fix b-tree. It
is a great preventative tool. I run every Sundays.
- TechToolPro is focused on hardware problems. The aim is different from
Norton.
- Norton is designed to do everything. The catch is, in order to do
everything, it does its job by _guess_. Now you know why you must create
Undo file. Norton's guess against OSX has not been accurate.
- DataRescue from ProSoft is probably the best data recovery tool once
you lost the data from spinning HD.

Re(3): SpamCop can't parse PowerMail headers

2004-04-02 Thread alan

Yes, the problem is where Powermail puts the headers. I don't remember
the details any more, but I think that Powermail puts the headers after
the text, not before (not what the word "header" means, but never mind).
I installed a script which copies the file to the clip board and puts the
headers where they belong.

The text of the apple script is as follows:

>property parent : load script alias (((path to scripting additions from
>local domain) as text) & "Macscript.com Library")
>
>tell application "PowerMail"
> set theMessages to current messages
> if (count of theMessages) > 1 then
> error -128
> end if
> set theMessage to item 1 of theMessages
> set theSource to source of theMessage
>end tell
>SetClipboard(theSource)

But this uses MacScript.com library, which is a commercial library, so it
won't compile for you unless you buy that product. I tried to upload a
binary (which would work for everyone) to a web site that is supposed to
be a repository of PowerMail AppleScripts, but it appeared that whoever
was in charge of that site went on permanent vacation. I have always been
amazed that PowerMail is such a great product, but whoever runs their web
site can't get it together to write a FAQ or create a place to exchange
things like applescripts.

Good luck!

A

PS--Be real careful forwarding the email the "reporting" email address at
Spamcop as recommended on Spamcop's site. It got my ISP listed, and my
name was mud until I got that unwound!

Wish List: Address book searching

2004-04-02 Thread Jim Pistrang

Hi all,

Here's one for the wish list, having to do with the Address Book:

When I use the View Only text field to filter the Address Book display,
the resulting list includes both individual addresses that meet my
criteria, and any Groups that those addresses are a part of. I would
really like to be able to do one of the following:

1) A preference to include/exclude Groups from the viewed list.
2) The ability to sort the Address Book so Groups appear at the bottom or
the top of the list.

BTW, I appreciate the PM engineer's willingness to hear our wishes, and
their commitment to making a good product even better. Keep it up!

I think Norton warns you not to use it without having a backup.
So, if you have one, use it.

Anyway, Norton is not a good choice on OS 10.
I never made good experiences with Norton under Mac OS.
TechTool4 is probably one of the best for Mac:

Database Error + crashes on connect

2004-04-02 Thread Adam de Zoete

Hi all,

I ran a Norton on my system yesterday and it found a PM file with bad mod
dates. Following fixing this I have had nothing but db errors.

A database error has occurred
Class=DB, what=100, when=9; err=158

If I do a low level rebuild it sorts things out, but i'm repeatedly
getting crashes on connecting. Freezes taking system down as well. Then
it's back to a low level rebuild again!

G4 733 - OS 10.2.8

Presently I can't receive mail with PM.

Any suggestions? Is there anything I can reset to get the connection
working again?

Many thanks,

Adam

By default, the display name is filled automatically with the first name
followed by the last name. If you change the "name format: displaying" in
the address book preference pane, then it will be filled automatically
with the last name first (for new contacts you create).
You can also choose "view options" menu, and make the "first name" and
"last name" columns visible, and sort the address book by last name.
The "name format: parsing" preference is used when you add an address of
a received message to the address book, to determine how the full name
should be parsed.

That brings to mind a very small feature, I wish there was. I have been a
little angry from time to time, that in the address the field "name"
automatically puts the surname first, which I don't do in any of my
databases. It is great to change the position of first name and surname
with one click in their fields, could it be possible to have a checkbox
in the preferences, that says "first name first" or a button in the
address that makes this exchange in one go?

I am also missing the option to see, where the data of databases are
going to be stored, that I want to import. As it is at the moment, I have
to wait until its done to find out, whether the information went into the
right fields. I would like to be able to clearly assign data to certain
fields before the import, just in case the database to be imported has,
for whatever reason, the wrong order of information. A lot of databases
have that feature, including Filemaker Pro, eMailer and Outlook Express,
so I guess, it might not be too problematic to program it. If it is
already there, I would be happy to learn how to handle it ... and take
everything back!

Best to all
