Re: Last Chapter

2022-07-11 Thread Ken Kixmoeller (ProFox)
I opened the big box-o'-books. What a weird selection was in there! About
half of it was the manuals from M$. Another big chunk were VFP3! (Including
YAG's Codebook). No Hackers Guide (treasured, of course) or other more
general books -- anywhere. Maybe I have another box somewhere

Here are some with potential use to someone:

-- Internet applications with visual FoxPro 6
-- 1001 things you wanted to know about visual FoxPro
-- WebRAD Building database applications on the Web
-- Client server applications with visual FoxPro and SQL server
-- Using VFP 5 (Michael Antonovich)
-- Using VFP 6 (Manachem Bazian)

I think those last two were the books I gave to students at my VFP classes.

Haha, yes, I remember you on CompuServe, too. (But wOOdy hadn't been on

Hmmm -- I was assuming I could upgrade an internal HD, as I did on this

the physical configuration. I need to continue my homework, clearly.

Haha -- the real answer is that I just want all these files at my beck and
call. I do have a small personal cloud at one place, but the response is
too slow to be useful, even when using it as a NAS. So -- I just wanna. We
have a couple of homes, and we travel a lot (or we did and -- Bug willing

[NF] Macbook Upgrade

2021-02-04 Thread Ken Kixmoeller (ProFox)
Hi, All -- -

Long time, etc. ;-) Been over 5 years of official retirement (actual a bit
less). Still watch the list for nostalgia, but I have nothing useful to
contribute (OK -- all at once: "As usual!")

Question for Ed and the Mac-tolerant: My mid-2014 MacBook is tired and
literally falling apart. I want to modernize a bit ("Oh! to have a battery
last more than 30 minutes..."). New MacBook with a big drive is $4-$5,000
depending on the drive. My criteria are:

1. I really don't need big power any more -- I surf and do the occasional
audio/video/image editing. What power I have is enough.

2. I want mega-storage. A 4TB drive or more would be the best. (Currently I
have a have an external drive literally Velcro'ed to the underside.) I
could add an internal one, but most of the laptop-size internal drives seem
to be targeted at NAS systems (https://tinyurl.com/y2hh3qhz). I am too far
out of the hardware loop to comprehend why a NAS-targeted drive is
different or wouldn't work in a laptop.

3. I still want a big screen -- a combination of preference and old eyes.

4. Happy for a refurb. or whatever if the source is reputable. I can
replace the drive (if #2).

5. Yes, it is possible that I would go back to the Windows or Linux
universes, but for now I want to stay the course (I use Parallels to do
Windows/Linux).

6. I need to stay mobile -- we move around quite a bit.

Recommendations? Half-baked ideas?

Warmest regards to all -- still grateful after all these years for your
camaraderie and generosity. (Special shout-out to wOOdy, harking back to
the CompuServe days.)

Yeah, but I did too much of one stroke and got (or exacerbated) a bad
rotator cuff injury. Rotator cuff surgery is one which you want to avoid,
by the way. Not Fun.

Re: [NF] Save Video from cable TV

2016-10-26 Thread Ken Kixmoeller (ProFox)
Just as a follow-up, I did succeed in accomplishing this, but not in time
to record my dog's appearances.

I bought this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LAP3GC8/

When I got it, the packaging included a slip of paper which said (in
essence) "If you get a 'protected' warning, don't you *dare* get a HDMI
splitter to record content illegally." Haha.

I got one of those (belatedly noticing the "frequently bought together" on
Amazon). It does work, but now I have nothing I'm interested in recording!
Easy enough to get whatever content I want legally.

Fortunately, both local TV stories did end up on the stations' websites
(contrary to what they told us). One I posted above, the other one here:

http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/video/category/news/3565308-interview-2nd-annual-bow-wow-film-festival/

For those interested, this is the video that was shown at the Bow Wow Film
Festival:

Fun for dog lovers.

Thanks, Ted. For some reason, this station never puts this reporter's
stories on its website. Not clear why. You are right, though, for some of
Tula's (our dog) interviews on radio and TV the engineers have given us
copies. Based on what the reporter said, I got the impression that it
wasn't an option in this situation.

Fortunately, the stories from most of her appearances have been on the
stations' websites. She has been on many, many stations (125-130?), plus
the CTV network evening news, and a huge number of newspaper websites.

I did order a device, but we may need to go the camera route...

Hey - --

Because of my famous dog (https://www.instagram.com/caninehappyhour/), I
need to be able to:
-- record live (cable) TV, and
-- gain access to the files in order to edit them.

We aren't big TV folks, and we have never had a DVR. I'd be willing to buy
an inexpensive one, but shopping and Googling confuses the heck out of me.

For example i see these:
 --
https://www.amazon.com/AVerMedia-EzRecorder-Definition-Recording-ER130/dp/B00LAP3GC8
I see I have to add my own USB hard disk (which I have). Would that do it?

Slingbox:
Would that do it?

Also:
https://www.amazon.com/Hauppauge-1212-Definition-Personal-Recorder/dp/B0018LX0DY
PVR? Personal Video Recorder?

Comcast is our provider. Is there a way to do this without additional
hardware?

I need to record stuff Thursday & Friday.

Anybody willing to give me a kick me in the right direction?

OK, I tried this for the first time last night, and it worked great. Thanks

Just a nit, but it is a little bit confusing. The free version says "up to
6 platforms" but when I did 3 (Facebook, Twitter, G+), then added
Pinterest, it forced me into a free, one-week trial of the premium version
"up to 10 platforms."

[NF] Social Media posting to multiple platforms

2016-04-06 Thread Ken Kixmoeller (ProFox)
Hey - - -

My daughter's "photography from a dog's point of view" social media
presence is exploding (at least by our standards). In addition to the 2
London newspapers, now it has been picked up by local TV stations around
the country.

Suddenly, posting to Instagram isn't quite enough. We had been trying to
figure out how best to use Twitter, G+, and especially Facebook, but now we
need to clone Instagram content on the other platforms. Facebook is
problematic, because the page to which we want to post is a page that we
"own" rather than my main, personal page.

I am actively researching this, but (as usual) you all have such amazing
experience, I'd be thrilled if you would share your experience.

Thanks,

Ken

[OT] Photos from a Dog's point-of-view

Hey, folks - --

Any dog lovers in here?

Our daughter (and we) have been experimenting with how to show the world
from the dog's perspective. It is fun, but we are aiming for a serious

programs. (I have started doing this at our local Children's Hospital as a

Check it out, follow the links to Instagram below the photos if you want to
see more. If you want to help Susie (or if you just think it is fun),
please post it on your social media.

the results like it was a playlist (or make the results *into* a playlist).

My patter: "Oh, you don't want to do this unless you don't have any

sometimes pinful process with little guarantee of results. If you want to

Part of the reason I retired. I loved doing it, and had great clients, but
so many prospects expected a site with eBay/Facebook/Amazon quality for

Ted, I am and seem to perpetually be TSFL (too stupid for linux). I

[NF] Blogging or CMS or what?

2016-02-08 Thread Ken Kixmoeller (ProFox)
Hey, folks - --

I'm needing to set up a web site but I need it to be easy for deeply
non-technical folks (i.e. my wife and the like) to add content. (And I
don't want to write it!)

The site wil mostly media -- pages with sets of photos, embedded
YouTube videos, or both. The pages will have very little written
content. Most or all of the images will also be posted to Instagram,
Facebook, maybe Twitter, etc.

I am starting to do some research on my own, but it always amazes me
what you folks know. Suggestions to jump-start this would be deeply
appreciated!

Ken

[OT] Combs for a Man?

2015-10-21 Thread Ken Kixmoeller (ProFox)
OK, this is *way* OT, but here goes:

My 16-year-old daughter was surprised and amused when she learned that I
carry a comb. I am surprised and amused that *she* is surprised and amused.
I think "Every guy I know carries a comb, when we leave the house, anyway."
My wife says "it is a generational thing."

So here is my question to the guys:

Part 1: Do you?
Part B: Age?

Me, "Yes" and a click short of 60.

That's it. Thanks.

Re: [NF][Parallels] Toasted my computer?

2015-04-29 Thread Ken Kixmoeller (ProFox)
Thanks Man-wai, Data, hard disk are fine. Even if this issue wasn't there,
all is backed up.

So, I ran the hardware test and *Yay!* I got an error. Confirms Kurt's
brilliance! ;-)

Off I toddle to Wurst Buy, pick up a new SIMM, and perform surgery on the
computer. Well, I have 2 8-gig SIMMs. Which one is bad? So, with a 50-50
chance, I take one out, replace it with the newbie, and turn on the
computer. Boots fine, so the new memory is OK.

BUT, I still don't know if I replaced the right one. I ran the hardware
test again, and, bummer, got the error. No biggie (except it takes a couple
of hours to run). Shut 'er down and swap the other original SIMM (original
sin?).

Boots again, no issue, but just out of curiousity, I run the hardware test
again. Same error!

OK, so do I spend another $60 to replace the other original SIMM, assuming
that both original SIMMs are bad? Or is it going to generate that same
error each dang time, even with 2 new ones?

After I hit Send, I'm going to fire up the W7 VM and see if it hits the
wall again. I'm also trying to understand the error code (4MEM/62/4000
0x84e9e998), but so far without success.

Re: [NF][Parallels] Toasted my computer?

2015-04-29 Thread Ken Kixmoeller (ProFox)
Thanks, Adam - -

Background and other stuff:

-- I have been running this configuration for 4 years, Parallels with W7,
WXP and Ubuntu VMs.

-- Just recently this issue cropped up a week ago or so.

-- Searching in Parallels' KB, I did reinstall Parallels. I also followed
their instructions in a KB article about one VM suckung the life (and
hope) out of your computer. It didn't help.

-- Each time the computer has locked up, I have to run the disk utility
Verify/Repair to get it to boot again. Now, I have done that operation
592,544 times (approximately).

-- Because of that, my first thought was that the HD was toast. So, I
bought me a brand-spankin' new hybrid SS/Magnetic disk.

Thanks for the ideas! I have lose a week of client work, so I really
appreciate ideas and help, even the WAGs.

If that crashes it then it¹s not the Win7.. Unload Parallels, disk
check/clean then try a clean install of Parallels

Otherwise check your VM settings for memory, I allow 16GB for each VM but
I do have 64GB to play with

If the VM is just a basic setup put a copy online and I¹ll see whether I

every time I start the Windows 7 virtual machine, the whole computer locks
up and won't restart. Have to go online to the Mac utilities verify the
disk, repair the disk, and then it will boot again. I have done this
approximately four hundred fifty three thousand times. Roughly.

I thought it was my hard disk. I replaced that. Started happening again. I
thought it was the Windows seven VM, so I deleted it and reinstalled it.
 Still happens, now worse.

I found a KB article on parallels that says essentially if your machine
 is
being sucked down into Hell, delete and reinstall Parallels. Doing that

[NF] Recover Files with Knoppix

2015-04-17 Thread Ken Kixmoeller (ProFox)
Hey, guys - --

My Mac's hard disk suddenly and without warning crashed and burned (not
literally) yesterday. It won't even mount with the Mac disk recovery
utility, so I guess it really is toast.

Most everything is backed up, fortunately, but there are a few files that
were not. I am trying to use Knoppix to get at them, but it has been a
loong time since I have done this, and I don't even recognize the user
interface any more.

I am googling, but I thought one of you helpful folks might shortcut my
search and provide some guidance (while I am out buying a replacement disk).

TIA,

Ken

You need to pad those logos. In IE they are over lapping.

Re: [NF] Web page animation or flow of graphics

2015-01-21 Thread Ken Kixmoeller (ProFox)
Even stranger ---

I haven't played with the marquee thing yet. Working on layout. (All the
div tags, etc.). As a part of that, I took out an outer-container div, and
one surrounding the header area (including the marquee stuff).

-- now the marquee works in Chrome, but only if I run it locally! Still
not in Safari.

-- The spacing is consistent, except when I run it in IE *locally* --
running it on my site is fine.

Sheesh! How I love web design! What a trip...

 simple.

Re: [NF] Do you pre-process data for a report?

2015-01-20 Thread Ken Kixmoeller (ProFox)
I always pre-select, too, but I often do it in two steps. Pre-select query
#1 is the simplest, fastest SQL which eliminates the obvious 99% of data
not needed for this answer. The second refines the raw results into the
precise ones. I find that two queries like this can run in 2-3 seconds,
where a single SQL statement to get the precise results can take 5x the
time. Plus, the two statements are easier to write!

FWIW,

Ken

Re: [OT] was 5 Best Practices Now BEER.

Yeah -- why do people get so uptight about matters of taste? I like stuff
that makes me happy. You like different stuff that makes you happy. We both
get what we want!

I didn't care for beer as a young man. Never wanted to get drunk for its
own sake. Didn't particularly like the taste. One trip to Europe cured
me. Back in about 1980 or so, I was at a trade show in Ghent. It was set-up
day. Our local office had a big booth on the floor. My little subsidiary
had a booth on the mezzanine. It was hot up there; no air conditioning.
Locals came up to help me as they could. After we were finished
constructing our respective booths, one of the guys came up to ask if I
wanted to join them in the beer garden in the convention center. Sounds
Great! (I figured I could get a soda or something.) My soda plan was
foiled when they ordered pitchers! Being a go along guy, I figured a sip
or two in the name of sociability would be OK (I'd done it before with Buds
or Coors). One sip and I (literally, I think) heard the angels sing. It was
utterly fantastic. Changed my life.

Back in the states, finding good beer was a challenge. Imports were better,
but just so. I remember having long conversations with restaurateurs who
were curious about diverse beer styles. In any case, these days are great.
I could try a different beer literally every day if I wanted. Mostly I do,
alternating with wine. And now craft spirits, too! Life gets better and
better, at least when it comes to liquors.

Glad you like them, too. I have four styles of Spielengau glasses, a fairly

thinner), a tulip for porters, stouts and barley wines, and a really tall,
skinny one for weissbeirs. The last doesn't get a lot of action at my

really good.

We also use Riedel glasses for wine. They really make a huge difference.
