The blasts across the capital Tuesday included 14 car bombs, two roadside bombs and mortar attacks in at least 17 neighborhoods of the capital, most of them in Shiite neighborhoods, police said. In an earlier report, police said there had been three roadside bombs and a sticky bomb: a device typically placed on a vehicle. Explosions struck the Shiite neighborhoods of Kadhimiya in the northwest; Amil, Bayaa and Shulaa in the southwest; Ur and Zuhour in the northeast; Sadr City, Kamaliya and Amin in the east; and Abu Dhsir in the southern part of the city. Org kristen itu sasaran empuk?? ya tentu. Mulai tahun awal masehi hingga enamratus tahun kemudian, Isa almasih berhasil menanamkan dunia tanpa perang, memenangi kekaisaran Rumawi tanpa senjata. Timur Tengah damai, tidak ada perang agama terjadi pada masa-masa itu. Lalu muncullah Muhammad, dan dgn pintar dia berhasil mengelola pasukan padang pasirnya menjadi pasukan penjajahan yg hebat, dan dengan giat mereka melaju menduduki negeri2 yg DAMAI, negeri2 kristen Syria, Iraq, Jordania, Mesir, Turki, Israel, Lebanon, bahkan Iran, yang tanpa menyadari dan tanpa perlawanan. Dari situ sampai India dan Andalusia, bahkan Indonesia dengan mendirikan kerajaan2 politik dan militer juga. Itulah Islam. Apakah mereka menganggap Kristen adalah target yang sah?? YA, target yang mudah. Hingga akhirnya orang Eropa sadar. Mereka dibawah Charles Martel menghentikan pasukan Islam di Prancis. Isterimu dengan demikian menjadi “haram” bagimu; apakah kamu menyadari hukum dalam Islam atau tidak. Engkau tidak lagi berhak membawanya pulang ke rumah atau melakukan upacara pernikahan yang baru dengannya tanpa adanya sebuah ‘halaala’ yang valid. Setelah periode ‘iddah’ yang tuntas, wanita ini bisa menikah denganmu lagi apabila ia masih menginginimu,” kata seminari ini. Sebagaimana yang dinyatakan oleh para sarjana Islam senior, ‘halaala’ mensyaratkan wanita ini untuk menuntaskan periode iddat-nya selama 40 hari, yang segera dimulai setelah terjadinya talak. Selama periode ini, ia harus menjauhi semua perayaan-perayaan dan tidak diperkenankan untuk bersosialisasi. Pada akhir masa iddat, ia harus menikah dengan seorang pria lain dan kemudian pernikahan itu bisa diakhiri ketika si pria menceraikannya. Kemudian wanita ini harus menjalankan periode iddat berikutnya, dan hanya setelah itu ia diijinkan untuk kembali menikahi suaminya “yang pertama”. The bearded, bespectacled Mr. al-Awlaki, 39, was born in New Mexico and moved to Yemen several years ago. He is alleged to have encouraged a U.S. Army psychiatrist to kill 13 people in a shooting rampage last year at Fort Hood, Tex., and to have inspired several other people to take up militancy, including Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who attempted to blow up an airliner over Detroit last Christmas. But until now, Mr. al-Awlaki was not regarded as a major figure in AQAP. His prosecution is obviously something the Yemeni government is doing because it realizes that he has become a pet project of the Pentagon, someone they are obsessed with, said Gregory Johnsen, a respected Yemen scholar at Princeton University. The government is hoping that steps like this can pre-empt possible U.S. actions in Yemen, Mr. Johnsen wrote Tuesday on his blog. But Mr. al-Awlaki is a red herring, he said. The more Western media and the Obama administration focus on al-Awlaki, the more AQAP pushes him to the front, essentially taking advantage of all the free advertising. The real threat, Mr. Johnsen said, is from Ibrahim Asiri, the Saudi man apparently behind Friday's airborne package bombs, and who last year dispatched his brother to carry out a suicide bombing of the Prince who heads Saudi Arabia's counterterrorism efforts. His brother died; the Prince did not. The latest steps taken by Yemen are unlikely to be effective, said Mr. Johnsen, who added that he is incredibly worried about the increasing militarization of U.S. policy toward Yemen a development that will only make the situation worse. He noted that ominous warnings have begun to appear in some recent AQAP announcements threatening retaliation for a December attack by the United States on a village in south Yemen, in which a large number of women and children were mistakenly killed. U.S. forces maintain a fleet of aerial unmanned drones that patrol Yemeni skies on an almost daily basis. Many U.S. officials and politicians now argue that a greater U.S. role must be played. The U.S. can get to where it wants to get in Yemen, Mr. Johnsen said Tuesday, but it can't get there in the speed that modern politics demands. Instead it will need to take a patient approach that utilizes more than just military options. There needs to be a parallel economic track, said Jalal Yacoub, Yemen's deputy finance minister who worries about the effects of things such as Tuesday's pipeline bombing. Oil and, increasingly, natural gas, are the country's only hope to stave off economic failure, and that is the key to ending the terrorism, Mr. Yacoub believes. Efforts at security must be accompanied by economic steps to support development, he said. It will take forever to eliminate extremism by security measures alone. It's too bad Washington didn't realize this years ago, Mr. Johnsen said. One of the most depressing things is that if the U.S. had actually taken a proper approach to Yemen in the days after Sept. 11, it wouldn't be in the situation it is in today, he argued. An audio message released Monday gave the church 48 hours to disclose the status of Muslim women it said are imprisoned in Coptic churches in Egypt. The message purportedly came from the Islamic State of Iraq, which claimed responsibility for an attack on a Baghdad church Sunday that killed 58 people and wounded 75. The umbrella group includes a number of Sunni extremist organizations and has ties to al Qaeda in Iraq. The group said the women's alleged plight was the reason it stormed the church. Wednesday, the group released a new message saying, The Ministry of War of Islamic State of Iraq declares that all the centers, organizations and bodies of Christian leaders and followers have become legitimate targets by the Mujahedeens, wherever our hands will reach them. Shortly after the message was released, Egyptian police sources confirmed that security has been reinforced at churches around the country. Additional protection was also being provided to the head of the Coptic Church, Pope Shenouda III, who is scheduled to give a sermon in Cairo in the evening, according to a police spokesman who could not be named in line with policy. Copts are adherents of an Egyptian sect of Christianity. About nine percent of Egyptians are Coptic, according to the Central Intelligence Agency World Factbook; 90 percent of Egyptians are Muslim. This is a matter of extreme seriousness and we should not underestimate the threat, said Yusif Sidhom, editor-in-chief of Watani, a weekly Coptic newspaper published in Cairo. We have to keep our eyes wide open and take all measures to ensure that our buildings and churches are not infiltrated. Sidhom said he was encouraged by the security measures taken by the Egyptian government, as well as by the position taken by political forces in Egypt, including the Muslim Brotherhood, which has condemned the attack on the church in Baghdad and condemned threats against Egyptian Copts. Worshippers at the Sayidat al-Nejat church in Baghdad were about to begin Sunday night services when gunmen entered the church, according to Martin Chulov, a journalist for Britain's Guardian newspaper, who was at the scene. As many as 120 people were taken hostage, said Lt. Col. Eric Bloom, a U.S. military spokesman. The gunmen held them for hours before security forces stormed in to end the standoff, arresting eight suspects. Most of the hostages were killed or wounded when the attackers set off explosives inside the church, Iraqi Defense Minister Abdul Qader Obeidi said. At least two of the attackers were wearing explosive vests, which they detonated just minutes before security forces raided the church, police officials said. The gunmen were demanding that the Iraqi government release a number of detainees and prisoners in Iraqi prisons, saying the Christian hostages would be freed in return, according to the police officials. Iraq's defense minister later said on state television that the kidnappers had demanded the release of a number of prisoners in both Iraq and Egypt. A rights group had said Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani could face the death penalty as early as Wednesday. Mr Kouchner said Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki told him no verdict in her case had been reached. In September, Iran said her stoning sentence had been suspended but she could still be hanged for murder. Ms Ashtiani was originally convicted of adultery several years ago and sentenced to death by stoning. Her case rose to international prominence and in July reports emerged that she had been sentenced to death for the murder of her husband. 'Cease repression' Manouchehr Mottaki assured me that Iranian legal authorities had not yet reached a verdict in the affair relating to [Ms Ashtiani] and that the information regarding her alleged execution did not correspond to reality, Mr Kouchner said in a statement. A rights group campaigning to free Ms Ashtiani earlier said that authorities in Tehran have given the go-ahead to Tabriz prison to execute her, possibly on Wednesday or soon after. The International Committee Against Stoning then said that Ms Ashtiani had not been executed on Wednesday because of the global protests the news aroused. A number of countries, including France, the US, the UK and Canada, had condemned her possible execution. We call on the Iranian authorities to respect basic human rights, cease their policy of repression and intimidation and release those who are currently being held without justification, said Mr Kouchner after his telephone call with Mr Mottaki. The president of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek, said if the news of the postponement of Ms Ashtiani's execution were confirmed, it would be a step in the right direction. The Iranian authorities should now use this occasion to review Ms Ashtiani's case in a fair and transparent trial, he said in a statement. An Iranian foreign ministry spokesman accused the West of trying to exert undue pressure on his country. The blasts across the capital Tuesday included 14 car bombs, two roadside bombs and mortar attacks in at least 17 neighborhoods of the capital, most of them in Shiite neighborhoods, police said. In an earlier report, police said there had been three roadside bombs and a sticky bomb: a device typically placed on a vehicle. Explosions struck the Shiite neighborhoods of Kadhimiya in the northwest; Amil, Bayaa and Shulaa in the southwest; Ur and Zuhour in the northeast; Sadr City, Kamaliya and Amin in the east; and Abu Dhsir in the southern part of the city. Well, we got thumped. I'm disappointed, but I continue to believe that our actions were necessary and correct. The stimulus spending helped avert a second Great Depression. The health-care legislation offers the dual promise of extending coverage and controlling costs. Financial regulatory reform will protect the U.S. economy from private-sector recklessness. That's a lot - but I heard you loud and clear. First, we didn't do enough. Unemployment would have been even higher without the stimulus, but it is unacceptably high. We've had nine consecutive months of private-sector job growth, and we're going to keep at it for as long as I'm privileged to be your president. Second, we did, for some of you, too much - too much spending, too much far-reaching legislation. It was unsettling. Every day it seemed we were writing another huge check. I'm convinced, again, that these funds were wisely spent. The much-maligned bailout will cost a fraction of the initial expense - and it saved communities across the country from economic devastation. The stimulus created jobs - and, by the way, provided more than $200 billion in tax relief. The health-care bill carries a big price tag - but I insisted that the cost be fully paid for. I will resist - with my veto pen - any effort to weaken the law that adds to the deficit. Nevertheless, the era of big check-writing is over. That is why - after some Republicans voted against creating a deficit commission - I did so by executive order. I look forward to receiving their report - and working with Republicans to tackle the debt. And that is why I have been so determined not to rack up another $700 billion in debt by permanently extending the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest. Third, I did not live up to my own standards for governing in a post-partisan manner. I was wrong to use the term enemies. I'm not going to offer excuses or point fingers. Instead, let me describe what I'll do differently. It's time to stop talking at the other party and start talking with them. The change starts now. Before I head overseas Friday, I'm inviting the congressional leadership to Camp David. Instead of a weekly video address and canned response, I propose a televised meeting with a designated Republican to discuss the issues of the day. Let's do that at the White House every other week. In alternate weeks, I'll go to their place. I'll come to the Capitol for question time from members of Congress, Republican and Democrat. This was John McCain's idea, and it was a good one. But talk isn't enough. I'll take the risk of going first, with proposals on health care and taxes. Many Republicans argue that the risk of malpractice suits drives up costs by leading doctors to practice defensive medicine. I agree. It's not popular with some Democrats, but I'll be sending to the new Congress a proposal to shield doctors from frivolous lawsuits. While we're at it, let's fix the provision in the new law that imposes onerous reporting requirements on small business. On taxes, I disagree with Republicans that we can afford to extend the upper-income tax cuts permanently or that it would threaten the recovery to let them lapse now. But there's space for compromise. We both agree on permanently extending tax cuts for 98 percent of Americans. Extending tax cuts for the wealthiest for two years would cost $75 billion. I think that money could better be spent in ways that would help ordinary Americans: reinstating a program to subsidize private-sector jobs for low-income parents. Creating a national infrastructure bank to modernize our fraying infrastructure - free from political considerations and earmarking - and front-loading the spending to create jobs. Still, if Republicans think tax cuts for the wealthy are a wiser choice, I'm open to a brief extension. This is just a start. We should join forces to renew and strengthen the education reform law that brought a new era of school accountability. We should put Social Security on a solid financial footing - while not cutting benefits for those who need the program most. We could, as John Boehner has suggested, scour the tax code for wasteful spending programs disguised as tax breaks. Indonesia berada di puncak klasemen dari sepuluh negara di dunia dengan jumlah jenis burung terancam punah global tertinggi yang diakibatkan oleh over eksploitasi, kata Agus dalam siaran pers yang diterima ANTARA di Bogor, Senin. Ia mengemukakan bahwa pada 2009 terdapat 117 jenis burung terancam punah di Indonesia, 17 jenis di antaranya memiliki status keterancaman tertinggi yaitu kritis. Tahun 2010 angka ini meningkat menjadi 122 jenis terancam punah, dengan 19 jenis dalam kondisi kritis. Burung, selain merupakan indikator bagi kualitas lingkungan, juga merupakan tulang punggung dalam menjamin berjalannya proses regenerasi hutan tropis secara alami di Indonesia. Di sisi lain, kawasan prioritas untuk keanekaragaman hayati di Indonesia sebagian besar berupa hutan dan 56 persen kawasan prioritas itu berada di luar jaringan kawasan perlindungan. Agus mengatakan, melihat intensitas ancaman bagi burung-burung di Indonesia, upaya perlindungan dapat diprioritaskan pada Daerah Penting bagi Burung (DPB). Namun tantangannya, tidak semua DPB masuk dalam jaringan kawasan konservasi dan sebagian masuk di kawasan hutan alam produksi. Dalam konferensi tentang Konvensi Keanekaragaman Hayati di Nagoya, Jepang, terungkap bahwa berdasar studi menyeluruh terhadap vertebrata tengah terjadi krisis kepunahan hewan bertulang belakang tersebut. Agus mengatakan diperlukan usaha bersama untuk melindungi keanekaragaman hayati Indonesia yang mulai mengalami krisis kepunahan. Seperlima jenis hewan bertulang belakang diketahui terancam punah saat ini, kondisi ini bisa saja lebih buruk kalau saja tidak ada upaya konservasi global selama ini, katanya. Dijelaskannya, studi yang akan dipublikasikan pada jurnal internasional Science ini menggunakan data dari 25.000 jenis yang terdapat pada Daftar Merah Jenis terancam Punah IUCN (The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species), untuk menelaah status semua jenis hewan bertulang belakang di dunia (mamalia, burung, amfibi, reptil dan ikan), serta perubahan statusnya selama ini. Hasilnya menunjukkan, rata-rata setiap tahunnya 50 jenis mamalia, burung, dan amfibi bergerak mendekati kepunahan. Penyebab ancaman kepunahan jenis-jenis ini antara lain adalah pembukaan lahan pertanian, pembalakan, eksploitasi berlebihan, serta invasi jenis asing, ungkapnya. Lebih lanjut dijelaskannya, sebagian dari Amerika Tengah, wilayah tropis di Pegunungan Andes di Amerika Selatan, dan bahkan Australia telah mengalami kepunahan jenis akibat jamur yang mematikan pada hewan-hewan amfibi. Asia Tenggara, khususnya Indonesia telah mengalami kepunahan jenis yang paling dramatis belakangan ini, yang sebagian besar disebabkan oleh kerusakan atau berkurangnya habitat hutan alam. Oleh karena itu, restorasi dan pengelolaan hutan alam produksi yang menjaga fungsi ekosistem dan produksinya secara berkelanjutan perlu dilakukan, papar Agus. Upaya ini juga vital karena hutan selain merupakan rumah utama bagi keragaman hayati dunia, juga membawa manfaat bagi jutaan masyarakat yang tinggal di sekitar hutan, tambahnya. Selain mengonfirmasikan laporan sebelumnya mengenai kepunahan keanekaragaman hayati yang terus berlangsung, studi ini juga pertama kalinya memberikan bukti nyata mengenai dampak positif dari upaya konservasi yang dilakukan di seluruh dunia. Hasil studi menunjukkan bahwa status keanekaragaman hayati bisa turun lebih jauh hingga 20 persen, kalau tidak ada upaya konservasi yang dilakukan selama ini. Namun upaya lebih besar diperlukan melalui LSM, pemerintah, perusahaan, maupun individu yang berkomitmen untuk bekerja sama menghentikan kepunahan dan mulai mengarahkan aksinya pada akar penyebab kepunahan keanekaragaman hayati, ujarnya. Studi ini mengetengahkan 64 jenis mamalia, burung dan amfibi yang mengalami perbaikan status berkat aksi konservasi. Walaupun demikian studi ini hanya menyampaikan perkiraan minimum dari dampak sesungguhnya yang diberikan oleh aksi konservasi. Terdapat harapan baik, tercatat 9 persen dari jenis-jenis terancam punah yang mengalami peningkatan populasi. The man, a member of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), had been planning a bomb attack in the UK, she told the Royal United Services Institute, in a speech on counter-terrorism. Our police and agencies have been working to disrupt AQAP operatives in this country. An AQAP associate was arrested here earlier this year. He is alleged to have been planning a terrorist attack in this country. Threats such as these are likely to continue, she said. In the most recent plot, the Yemen-based AQAP is believed to be behind bombs built into desktop computer printers discovered at East Midlands airport and in Dubai on Friday morning after a tipoff from Saudi intelligence. The bombs, reported to have been wired to the printed circuit boards of mobile phones, contained between 300g and 400g of the plastic explosive pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) enough to put both aircraft at risk. Ibrahim al-Asiri, a Saudi-born militant believed to be at large in Yemen, is suspected of having constructed the devices. He is also alleged to have been responsible for making the device that was involved in the failed Christmas Day bomb plot targeting a plane bound for Detroit last year. That device also used PETN, which can not be detected by x-ray machines because it is non-metallic. May said AQAP had shown an ability to project a threat from beyond the borders of Yemen. The home secretary also warned that the return of British citizens from Somalia posed a potential threat of mass murder on the streets of London. We know that people from this country have already gone to Somalia to fight, she said. It seems highly likely, given experience elsewhere, that if left to their own devices we would eventually see British extremists, trained and hardened on the streets of Mogadishu, returning to the UK and seeking to commit mass murder on the streets of London. The home secretary described the threat from terrorists as developing, and said they had used new technology to develop and refine the way they work. As evidence of this, she pointed to the failed liquid bomb attack in 2006, in which terrorists attempted to bring down passenger jets with bombs disguised as soft drink bottles, and to the bombing attempt on Christmas Day last year. The technique involved ''stripping'' a donated heart, liver or other organ that was deemed unsuitable for donation of their cells, leaving just a ''scaffold'', Francisco Fernandez-Aviles, the chief cardiologist at Gregorio Maranon Hospital, told a news conference. Stem cells from the patient would then be applied to this framework to regrow the organ, which would share their DNA, thus making it more acceptable to their body. Doctors would be able to carry out transplants involving organs that had been regenerated using this technique in five years at the earliest, Dr Fernandez-Aviles said. ''This will put an end to two problems: the lack of donors or organs suitable for transplant and the rejection of transplanted organs by the patient,'' he said. The hospital has eight heart ''scaffolds'' ready for use with this technique and it hopes to partially re-grow one heart using stem cells by the end of the year. The Science Minister, Cristina Garmendia, said the hospital ''has the first lab in the world dedicated to producing bioartificial organs for transplant using adult stem cells.'' Three years ago the hospital became the first in the world to use stem cells from a patient's fat tissue, extracted through liposuction, to treat his heart. Massive investment has been directed into stem-cell research, driven by hopes that immature, pre-cursor cells can be prompted into becoming specific adult cells for the heart, brain and so on. Spain has become a world leader in organ donation since it set up a network of transplant co-ordinators in 1989 at all hospitals in the country. They monitor emergency wards and tactfully talk to grieving families to get permission to use organs to save others. About 15 per cent of families approached in Spain refused consent for organ donation, compared with the 40 per cent who refused in the 1980s before the system was set up. Dr. Bhatal is a member of the Australian chapter of SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence), which is a non-profit making scientific organization conducting research, exploration and education in the area of astrobiology/exobiology (the study of life forms in space). On finding the rare pulse of energy in December 2008, he declared Looking at one of the objects, we found this signal. We found this very sharp signal, sort of a laser lookalike thing which is the sort of thing we're looking for - a very sharp spike. And that is what we found. Although there are sceptics in the scientific community, among them SETI pioneer Prof. Frank Drake, former director of the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico, who states he needs to see evidence first, the signal is puzzling. Until now, scientists cannot answer a simple question: why in some cases they happen, and in others they do not? If it was established, then a tragedy like the one that has recently occurred in Indonesia could have been avoided. An earthquake measuring 7.5 points, which occurred late on Monday, October 25 in Indonesia, caused a tsunami, which affected Mentawai islands in the western part of the country. Interestingly, the epicenter of the aftershocks of this earthquake was located 78 km west of the South Island Pagai of the Mentawai archipelago, at a depth of 20 km below the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Apparently, this is why the first few minutes after the earthquake the Indonesian government reported the tsunami threat, but later canceled the alert. Specialists from the Tsunami Warning Center in the Pacific issued a statement declaring that the threat of a tsunami was acute for some time, but then has passed. However, as subsequent events showed, their optimism was somewhat premature. In the morning of 26 October a huge wave, whose height was nearly three meters, with a roaring noise attacked Mentawai islands, whose inhabitants, trusting scientists' predictions, did not have time to prepare. Among the islands that suffered the most is aforementioned Southern Pagai, where the tsunami destroyed 80% of all buildings. Many people died in the disaster, even more have been declared missing. In the village of Betu Monga of 200 local residents 160 were lost in the disaster; most of the missing are women and children. In Southern Pagai the tsunami penetrated up to 600 meters deep into the coastal villages, on the island of North Pagai the water crept up to the homes. The island of Sipura was also hit. Approximately three thousand people are placed in specially established centers for the victims. According to preliminary data, as a result of a gigantic wave, 270 people are killed and nearly 500 are missing. Most people have learned from the media about the tsunami and its victims, and expressed outrage at the decision of the authorities of the country not to take any action after the earthquake, since the tsunami, as they said, was no longer a threat. Some also blame scientists for not giving an accurate prediction. In this case, few people know that, strictly speaking, so far it is simply unrealistic to predict the occurrence of a tsunami with 100% accuracy. Where do these huge ocean waves come from? It is believed that the tsunami (from Japanese port and wave) occur for several reasons. They are likely to be generated by undersea earthquake (as in the case with Mentawai islands) and the eruption of oceanic volcanoes (remember the tsunami that has formed after the eruption of Krakatoa in 1883, which destroyed over five thousand ships and killed 36,000 people). Also, tsunamis may occur due to underwater landslides (New Guinea tsunami in 1998), as well as due to sudden changes in atmospheric pressure over the ocean (a phenomenon that often occurs in the Balearic Islands, where it is called 'rissaga'). However, the main reason for the appearance of gigantic waves is undersea earthquakes that occur around oceanic islands, with the epicenter located close to the bottom. What exactly causes the water to stand up? As we remember, during underwater earthquakes parts of the earth's crust are deformed: some are compressed, the other creep on their neighbors, that is, changing size and shape of the surface of an area of the seabed. Due to small compressibility of water and the speed of the process of deformation of the aforementioned parts of the bottom, the water located above them is displaced, and having no time to spread, results in ocean surface water rise or fall. Further it causes into the vibrational motion of water masses, which is nothing else but the well-known tsunami waves, which begin to spread with a great speed (50 to 1000 km / h). It is known that one such earthquake could create a few waves that appear with the interval of over an hour of each other. It turns out that, logically, every coastal underwater earthquake should generate these ocean giants, so scientists should make forecasts based solely on the fact of registration of tectonic fluctuations in dangerous areas. However, not everything is that easy. Observations show that quite often even the most powerful earthquake do not generate a tsunami. Conversely, sometimes a very small perturbation of the Earth's crust causes gigantic waves on the ocean surface. Frankly, the issue of recognizing tsunami potential of an earthquake has not yet been solved completely, therefore preventing services focused exclusively on the earthquake magnitude. It is

The International Space Station is the fruit of a policy of collaboration after the Space race between the USSR and the USA in the second half of the twentieth century, which saw the Soviets pioneering practically all spheres of space exploration and the USA eventually landing astronauts on the Moon. Today as friends and not foes, the USA and Russian Federation have been the pioneers behind the International Space Station, which has been home to visitors from Belgium, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, Rep. Korea, Russia, South Africa, Sweden, UK and USA. The first part to be launched in November 1998 was the Russian module Zarya and the original projection was a two-year construction process followed by ten years of experiments. Nowadays, scientists are prolonging their prognosis for a further ten years, considering that the ISS will be operational at least until 2020, an extension of a decade on the original plan. In January 1999, the US module Unity was joined to Zarya, being carried by discovery and 18 months later, the Russian habitation module, Zvezda, saw the station take shape. The station began to accommodate space tourists (the first was Dennis Tito in 2001). Over its first decade, the ISS saw over 150 spacewalks, received 67 Russian vehicles to 34 American spaceships and docked with modules from Japan and the European Space Agency. The Makkah region branch of the organization in charge of Qur'an memorization (tahfiz) schools has said reports published in a local Arabic newspaper that expatriate teachers have not been stopped from teaching Qur'an are untrue. Qur'an memorizing classes have not been stopped. The classes continue but only with Saudi teachers . All expatriate teachers who work for the society have been stopped from teaching, said Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah Hanafy, chairman of the Charitable Society for Holy Qur'an Memorization (Makkah Region). We received a statement from the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Call and Guidance ordering us to stop expatriate teachers from teaching the Qur'an. We also received orders not to transfer the iqamas of expatriate teachers to us, he said. We've stopped them from teaching the Qur'an, but have not fired them yet, he said. Criticizing the move, the chairman said there is a dearth of qualified Saudi Qur'an teachers. We only have 100 Saudi Qur'an teachers. Now we need a large number of qualified Saudi teachers who would also be willing to work for us, said Hanafy. He said Saudis are often reluctant to teach the Qur'an because of low salaries. Saudis show no interest in teaching the Qur'an because we only pay SR1,000 per month. Qur'an lessons also start in the afternoon, which is when most Saudis have their siestas. There are other sessions that are held during the evening, but Saudis usually refuse to attend them because this is the time when people usually socialize, he said. The chairman also denied reports that only Saudi students will now be allowed to attend tahfiz lessons. All students who are interested in memorizing the Qur'an are welcome to attend. Memorizing the Qur'an is a right for every Muslim. We never put restrictions on teaching the Qur'an to expatriates, added Hanafy. The Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Call and Guidance said in a report that it wishes for Saudis to teach the Qur'an because of violations committed by expatriate teachers. No one from the ministry was available to discuss this matter further. We received a statement saying that expatriate teachers are committing violations and breaking rules, but we do not know what these violations are. Most of the expatriate teachers are qualified enough and never create problems, said Hanafy. He further called on the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Call and Guidance to allow expatriate teachers to continue teaching the Qur'an until they find enough Saudi teachers. The short-range radio technology, known as Near Field Communication, is expected to be built into smart phones in the coming years. It is also envisioned for ticketing and card payments. Assa Abloy says it wanted to test the system before expanding it to other hotels, commercial buildings and homes. Greger Johansson, a telecommunications analyst at research firm Redeye, said NFC is a hot technology in the mobile phone market. But he said few models have incorporated it so far and it will take several years before it becomes widely used. It's not just a matter of incorporating the technology into the phones, he said. You need someone who can read it too. There are quite a few players involved so it will take a while until it works well. The head of Assa Abloy's mobile keys division, Daniel Berg, acknowledged that participants in the trial may find it cumbersome to have an extra mobile phone. But once people have the technology in their own phones, he said, it will save them time at check-in and improve security because the access credentials in a lost phone can be revoked remotely. He said the phone technology works with existing radio-enabled locks, so hotels can continue giving key cards to visitors who don't have the new technology in their phones. Chinese naval expansion and increasingly assertive claims to disputed maritime areas in the East and South China Seas has prompted Japan, South Korea, Vietnam and others to reaffirm their enthusiasm for America's security umbrella, after some ambivalence in recent years. Japan and India, China's main Asian rivals, are increasingly looking to each other, and to Southeast Asia, as a hedge against China's rise, which has taken a hard turn in recent months. Prime Minister Naoto Kan and his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh met after the Hanoi summits, which were overshadowed by the mudslinging between the Chinese and Japanese delegations. Prime Minister Kan was keen to understand how India engages China, Indian Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao said after that meeting. As well as increasing ties with Japan, India's slow-to-action Look East policy, which has brought the self-proclaimed world's largest democracy into disrepute over its feting of the Myanmar junta, is likely to be enhanced in coming years, as highlighted in a statement issued after the India-ASEAN summit. In recent months, China has alarmed countries in Southeast and East Asia with some remarkably strident Freudian slips, which wary neighbors have interpreted as the hegemonic aspirations behind Beijing's peaceful rise rhetoric. Some influential commentators, including American Walter Russell Mead, have made the historical analogy with post-Bismarck Germany, which famously, and disastrously, abandoned the Iron Chancellor's relatively cautious diplomacy for a more strident and clumsy approach under Kaiser Wilhelm II. In July, China's Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi reminded Southeast Asian countries that China is a big country. This not-so-subtle language amplified alarm bells set off when US officials leaked Chinese statements that the South China Sea is viewed by Beijing as a core interest, a term usually used to describe its claims over Taiwan and Tibet. ASEAN members Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam, and non-ASEAN Taiwan, all have competing claims in the maritime area. According to the statement released after the ASEAN-China Summit last weekend, Beijing is committed to the full and effective implementation of the DOC [Declaration on the Conduct of Parties, a stillborn deal between the stakeholders first mooted in 2002] in the South China Sea and will work with ASEAN states toward the eventual conclusion, on the basis of consultations and consensus, of a code of conduct. The next test of China's intentions will come in a meeting on the DOC scheduled for December, which will show whether or not it is committed to a multilateral solution to the South China Sea impasse. To date, Beijing has insisted on dealing with the issue on a bilateral basis with individual ASEAN states. Key shipping lanes run through the South China Sea, the second-most used sea-lane in the world. These run close to the potentially oil-rich Spratly and Paracel Islands. The Spratlys are claimed by Vietnam, China, Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei and Taiwan. The Paracels are claimed by Vietnam and China, with the latter dispute leading Beijing to threaten US oil companies seeking to find potential seabed resources near the islands. Vietnam and the Philippines ran a joint effort to establish a common ASEAN position on the South China Sea at the Hanoi summit, countering China's efforts to deal with rival claimants to the waterway on a unilateral basis. Hanoi, which refers to the South China Sea as the East Sea, announced last weekend that it will open its Cam Ranh base to foreign navies, giving them direct access to the South China Sea. Charmless offensive In recent years, Beijing has been lauded for a so-called charm offensive in Southeast Asia, and elsewhere, winning friends through investment, loans and grants, while offering development aid minus the governance and human-rights strings that Western donors usually attach. With the US focusing on democracy promotion and resource-sapping wars in the Middle East, even Asian allies such as the Philippines and Thailand appeared to drift. United States President Barack Obama's administration promised to rectify the perceived disengagement, even as the economic pendulum has swung more decisively in China's direction. ASEAN and China are almost one year into a new free trade agreement, which came into force on January 1. Trade and investment were another key focus for the China-ASEAN plank of the Hanoi meetings last weekend, with Beijing clearly keen to distract attention from its perceived diplomatic missteps of recent weeks. Let us investigate! Our investigative journalists regularly name and shame our elected leaders, yet they refuse to question the ways the executive functions in this country. Since official ministerial communication is carried out by the concerned secretary, no corruption can take place without the abatement of the bureaucracy. Sometimes, investigative journalism in Pakistan remains merely a case of whole-scale copying of files handed out by aggrieved bureaucrats whose only bone of contention lies in being on the losing end of the commission dispute. We have consistently failed to unearth evidence for or reasons of national tragedies such as the murder of our first Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan to the martyrdom of Benazir Bhutto. There are still hundreds of important events whose actual circumstances and reasons we are still unaware of, even though the significance of that information remains as important now as it was back when the events occurred. We have used our right to access of information to only unearth the corruption of our elected representatives and have consistently failed to question why the civilian and military bureaucracy refuses to follow the rules and regulations made for them at every level, yet cannot be brought to accountability by the elected representatives. We refuse to highlight how the bureaucracy has strived to ensure, through their rules of business, that their performance can never be actually debated by the people with whom the blame of failure of governance is actually laid. We do not see too many reports in newspapers on how the civilian bureaucracy has closed all avenues of questioning their performance in the Senate, National Assembly and the provincial assemblies of Pakistan. We have never highlighted the helplessness of the elected representatives in our reports where even a very small question regarding the non-availability of clean drinking water in some far flung village or a motion seeking the arrest of a criminal in a brutal rape is turned down because the rules laid down do not allow us to. We are obsessed with the corruption and ineffectiveness of our elected representatives in such a great way that when these 'devils' are sent home by some 'angel', no such story of corruption ever makes it to the front pages of a newspaper. There are times when one feels that this attitude of journalists should be investigated in itself for it usually seems a part of the great game to defame politicians. Pakistan has been gifted in every way. It has been bestowed by great deep sea-ports, huge gold and copper mines and one of the largest resources of coal but there is no real or so-called investigation as to why the concerned departments of the concerned ministers were unable to develop any of these mega projects in the last five decades or so. Considering civil bureaucracy along with the military establishment of the country is the only assured reality in Pakistan. When the real policy making is done at the secretarial level, then why is no one asking questions from those responsible for the development of these projects? Why is there no report on why the gold and copper mines of Reko Diq were sold for peanuts to foreign investors? I refuse to believe that there is any document in this country that is not drafted by the concerned bureaucratic division, so why were no questions raised by any of the bureaucrats when such a national asset was being sold off? And in our effort to justify these lashings on the politicians, we rarely release some stories about the corruption of the armed services and the civil bureaucracy; these news stories are usually footnotes when compared to our unhealthy obsession with politicians. There is never a serious investigative report that can help us analyse the costs and benefits of our bloated executive branch, which is paid for by the poor people of the country. These people are supposed to be responsible for making the system work and receive years of luxury for their services, yet there is no real obsession with truth when it comes to bureaucrats. And such an investigation may never occur because the file will never be made to be leaked to a journalist. Sayangnya, kebiasaan doyan perang Taliban dinilai masyarakat barat menghadirkan prilaku tak terpuji berupa sikap sewenang-wenang terhadap warga sipil. Penguasa Taliban yang tahu persoalan itu segera bertindak dengan merotasi perwira mereka guna mencegah sifat serakah dan zalim kepada warga setempat. Prilaku itu memang bukan tanpa alasan. Meletus lagi mengeluarkan awan panas bertubi-tubi mengarah ke Kinahrejo, ujar Staf Khusus Kepresidenan Bidang Bencana dan Bantuan Sosial, Andi Arief, Rabu (3/11). Turunnya awan panas ini hampir bertepatan dengan jadwal kunjungan Presiden SBY untuk meninjau pengungsi Merapi. Biro Pers dan Media Istana Kepresidenan menyebutkan Presiden memulai peninjauan di posko pengungsian Purbowinangun, Yogyakarta, pukul 08.00 WIB. Presiden yang didampingi Ani Yudhoyono dan sejumlah Menteri Kabinet Indonesia Bersatu II selanjutnya menuju posko utama pengungsian letusan Gunung Merapi di Pakem, Kabupaten Sleman. Di posko utama itu, Presiden akan mendengarkan paparan penanganan bencana letusan Gunung Merapi dari Gubernur DIY Sultan Hamengkubuwono X dan Kepala Pusat Vulkanologi dan Mitigasi Bencana Geologi, Surono. Awan panas yang membumbung tinggi mengarah ke barat dan dapat terlihat jelas dari tempat pengungsian Desa Purwobinangun, Kecamatan Pakem, Kabupaten Sleman, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta. Secara terpisah, cuaca buruk yang menyebabkan tertundanya keberangkatan beberapa kapal ke Mentawai, membuat relawan dan LSM berebut pulang. Cuaca buruk menyebabkan gelombang tinggi di perairan laut Mentawai. Akibatnya tiga kapal penumpang membatalkan keberangkatan dari Padang ke Mentawai. Mendengar kabar tersebut, relawan dan anggota LSM yang hendak pulang berebut untuk bisa mendapatkan tempat di KRI Teluk Cirebon, yang berangkat ke Padang, Rabu (3/11). Bahkan seorang relawan dari Dinas Kesehatan Padang, Iswandi (37), harus terjatuh dari tangga KRI Teluk Cirebon. Dia terjatuh dari ketinggian 9 meter dan tercebur ke laut disela-sela badan kapal sedalam 30 M. Akibatnya dia harus dilarikan ke Posko Medis di Kecamatan Sikakap, Pagai Utara, Mentawai. Salah satunya dengan mengajurkan masyarakat untuk mengikuti prgram Keluarga Berencana (KB). Program KB ini akan meningkatkan kualitas penduduk. Para orang tua akan lebih memperhatikan pendidikan, kesehatan anak apabila mempunyai jumlah keluarga sedikit, kata Haryono saat seminar dan talkshow KB yang berjudul 'KB Dalam Paradigma Islam', kemarin. Menurutnya, jumlah penduduk Indonesia saat ini cukup mengkhawatirkan karena bisa menurunkan kualitas bangsa Indoesia. Saat ini banyak sekali orang yang lapar, ligkungan yang kurang sehat, sering terjadi kekerasan dan migrasi. Tantangan kedepan jumlah penderita HIV/AIDS di perkotaan dan pelabuhan. Para turis sebaiknya jangan sampai disuguhi dengan daging mentah (wanita penghibur), tandasnya. Nantiya, kata Haryono Suyono wanita penghibur ini akan menularkan penyakit termasuk HIV/AIDS. Bahkan para mahasiswa juga akan mendapat tantangan yang berat, yaitu memerangi kebodohan, pengangguran, kemiskinan, kelangkaan lapangan kerja. Untuk itu program KB harus dimulai dengan pendekatan medis dan dilanjutka menjadi pembangunan berbasis keluarga. Semua itu bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kualitas sesuai dengan prioritas Milenium Development Goals (MDGs), jelas Haryono. Untuk usia hingga 15 tahun, tuturnya, dengan entaskan kemiskinan, tuntaskan pendidikan dasar, pemberdayaan perempuan, turunkan kematian anak dan ibu hamil. Sedangkan untuk usiua 15 hingga 24 tahun dengan mencegah flu, HIV/AIDS, malaria dan kerja sama antar-negara. Prinsip utamanya adalah pembangunan nasional mencakup semua aspek kehidupan untuk mewujudkan masyarakat adil dan makmur.
