Re: A few questions

2017-09-20 Thread Brian@Wavefield Recordings
Hi,

Sorry as you may guess I replied in a rush to you originally, so
forgot you had specifically referred to using Voice Over and the mac.

As Slau recommended in his replies the standard version of Protools
and not HD or Protools first would be the best starting point in my
opinion.

I don't know what features other DAWs could have specific to classical
music etc, but Protools should be perfectly sufficient in terms of its
options for cross fading, the ability to tab to transients, even do
some time stretch stuff etc.

The protools with speech tutorials helped me get past the block of not
knowing where to begin, but I never went back to them after an initial
quick listen and getting my feet wet...however I felt it was worth
supporting at the time, and it was based on an out of date protools
version even when I purchased it, however most of the principals
applied. It is much more focused on editing audio than midi as I
remember it, so that will suit you just fine.

I believe Slau has posted some tutorials here, and I haven't listened
to more than one of them quickly, but he is the best Protools resource
I have ever come across full stop, and as you may already tell is very
helpful on list here.

There is a protools access drop box shared folder, which you can ask
to be linked to or search the list archives for reference to it and
Slau's posts on editing.

The list also has many other fantastic contributors, and I would not
count myself as one of those, but hopefully my interjections here have
saved someone else a little typing and presented some of the options
to you.

Best of luck,
Brian.

Re: FloTools issues on sierra 10.12.3 with PT 12.8

2017-09-07 Thread Brian@Wavefield Recordings
Slau, my apologies, I vaguely recall having been told this already, I
think I have FloTools working as it should in that case. Are you
sucking it up for want of a better phrase and working off Sierra
regardless of this VO bug? My main studio machine is still on Yosemite
and working extremely stable, but it won't allow me let VO be
controlled by apple scripts for some reason, so I'm still weighing up
pros and cons of upgrading for FloTools benefits or staying where I am
for now. That VO bug in Sierra would slow me down quite a bit mixing,
but FLoTools would speed up tracking sessions especially quite a bit,
the modified mouse click stuff is making me quite happy right now
although I'm only just learning the ropes.

On an aside Slau, we spoke off list a while back about the track list
table showing up to the right/the bottom of the mix window for me an
other unpredictable behaviour, I'm not sure why this is still
happening, but I seem to be able to solve it every time by hiding and
then showing all tracks in the session. I'm no closer to knowing
exactly why it was happening so consistently, but it could be partly
down to the fact that a huge number of my projects were based off the
same session template.

Brian.

FloTools issues on sierra 10.12.3 with PT 12.8

2017-09-06 Thread Brian@Wavefield Recordings
Hi all,

I had FloTools working fairly well before upgrading to sierra and had
to upgrade for software for my partner to use, anyway I am only using
FloTools on this secondary machine fr the moment for various reasons,
so I didn't make a backup of my system pre upgrade.

So the main issue I'm having is that voice over jumps to the top of
the mix window after I close menus or plug-in windows I had accessed
with FloTools commands i.e. I open the track output menu on track 16
of a sessions for example, and after I select a n output VO jumps back
to the top of them window, instead of hanging around track 16. This
didn't happen before I upgraded to Sierra.

I also seem to be having some other issues with mouse clicks etc, but
haven't really had time to explore those things fully.

Is there anything I may be missing.

I have tried reinstalling FLoTools, I am on the latest PT etc.

All suggestions are welcome,

Brian.

Flo tools has changed certain behaviours since upgrading to latest PT and OS version

2017-04-05 Thread Brian@Wavefield Recordings
Hi all,

So as the subject explains I updated my second machine to test out how
things would work with the latest OS and latest PT version.

I've been mixing on the go this week and am a bit frustrated to find
that the following things have changed which greatly slow down my
workflow, so far I think these may be the only issues to pop up.

Firstly, when using the command option W key stroke to close plugin
windows, Voice Over jumps focus back to the top of the mix window i.e.
the left as you arrow with voice over, where as before closing the
window would land me back on the name of the track I was working on,
which I believe is the proper behaviour.

Further more when I arrow back over from the top of the mix window to
get back to the track I was working on it will sometimes randomly
arrive into the insert section of the track I was working on as I pass
by, as though it kind of half remembers I had been working on that
track or something. A bit strange and laborious.

Secondly, a small detail but a little annoying, I always set hot spot
5 to the trackless table for speed of track selection and such, but it
used to automatically interact with he trackless table, now I have to
manually interact with the track list table after I jump to the hot
spots, not a major deal but its an extra key stroke in my work flow
that used to be unnecessary.

I haven't really tried solving these issues beyond running the
installer for flo tools again and have not yet had time to start from
a clean PT session to see if the problems still occur.

My main studio machine is still on Yosemite and as some of you may
recall, I couldn't check the box to let voice over be controlled by
apple script, so there fore couldn't install flo tools, so given the
change in behaviour of flo tools after upgrading my second machine,
I'm a little hesitant to do the same to my main machine just to get
flo tools up and running in case anything else goes wrong.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as always and hopefully I
managed to get the message across relatively concisely,

Brian.

Thanks for the idea but there is no lock showing in the voice over
utility its just asking me for the password when I try to tick the box
to allow apple scripts to control voice over.

Its a very strange thing.

Is anyone else here on yosemite still? Its hardly just a bug in this
OS version is it?

I'd really prefer not to update.

I'm not great around the apple OS generally as I'm purely here for

Re: Flo tools install problem on my second machine

2017-02-17 Thread Brian@Wavefield Recordings
Thanks for the swift reply Slau,

Well, I seem to have two problems possibly interrelated.

1. I run the installer, where by it speaks to please wait etc, and
then voice over speaks that there's a stop button in focus, and then
voice over jus returns focus back to the FloTools master folder from
where I launched the installer. I can't recall from my other machine
if that was how it should have gone or not. Then on opening keyboard
maestro it does not show a FloTools group in the macro groups, there's
the switcher group etc which have been disabled but nothing saying
FloTools.

2. Perhaps related, I can't seem to check the box to allow voice over
be controlled by apple scripts. Every time I check the box it bring up
my password field, and after entering the password the check box
remains unchecked...which is strange.

That's obviously a problem but I would have thought the FLoTools
macros should still show in keyboard maestro?

I'm running Yosemite and PT 12.6 or so on this machine by the way.

Brian.

Re: Audio interface problem

2017-01-08 Thread Brian@Wavefield Recordings
I'll add to this as it might be some bit useful.

I've been bugged by the IO setup a bit in the last few days moving
between different machines, sessions and interfaces, and like Slau
said, deleting the i/o setup and hitting the default button is a good
way to go. Just hit command+A in the i/o setup dialog and then arrow
over to delete and hit that followed by moving to a button that says
default and hit ok.

This didn't work for me yesterday however when I opened a session on
my macbook with only the built in sound on the macbook as my audio
device. The session had been recorded in my studio with my consoles
interface, but I was running into some issues.

I think part of the problem was that when Reopening protools with no
interface connected it had the protools aggregate IO set as the
playback engine rather than the macs built in sound, not sure though.

I haven't exactly been having consistent behaviour from the IO setup
templates etc in the recent days.

The other day while in the studio and opening a session created with
another small interface I travel with sometimes I had no luck with
deleting the IO path and restoring the default, so I just deleted the
outputs and then created 16 new stereo outputs (as my studio interface
is 32 channels), and when I hit ok and routed my tracks to the
appropriate output it worked just fine.

The strange thing is I had no such issues until last week switching
between various interfaces, hard drives, sessions and computers.

HTH and sorry for being long winded,
Brian.

Re: Huge thanks to all involved with Flotools & a minor issue with plugin views

2017-01-02 Thread Brian@Wavefield Recordings
Ok a final word for now, I mistakenly had spotlight shortcuts still
enabled which were clearly clashing with the control + left/right
arrows so I can now navigate the plugin layout, however I still have
to command tab in and out of protools for the plugin layout for both
EQ3 and dyn3 to load, so there is something up with the windows
displaying I reckon, I've hid all floating windows in PT, but am
wondering if there are some other windows open from another
application that I don't know about.

Unfortunately I'm now realising that I need to figure how to get my f
1 to f 4 keys working on this apple usb keyboard on this macbook,
because I believe VO + f2 twice or some such short cut should give me
info about open windows. When I use VO + k to bring up keyboard help
it doesn't report the f1 through f 4 keys when I press them.

I presume this is a simple and common problem but some googling and a
journey through the key board preferences has shed very little light
for me thus far.

As a quick follow up, I had success getting FLoTools to report that
the plugin layout was loaded by command tabbing out and back into
protools, however in the EQ37 band it is only showing me the controls
I can access with control and the up/down arrows and not the control +
left/right arrows, so I'm just getting the q and input level value.
Have had similar result with the dyn3 which only reports the knee
value.

This must have something to do with the way windows are showing on my
machine or something, perhaps its related to the trackless table thing
after all.

Strange, I haven't knowingly set anything with the OS or VO from
standard setup.

Hey Slau,

Thanks for the reply as always.

Sorry about my lack of knowledge on the paths of things in the mac OS,
the FloTools folder is indeed in the user library, and the EQ3 and
dyn3 files are in there, but FloTools still isn't seeing them or at
least not loading them for me. Just in case I tried copying the
FloTools files to the system library also.

When I open up the text files for the dyn3 and EQ3 7 band the mouse
coordinates seem to be in there as expected.

On the track inspector toggle issue, that's pure stupidity on my part,
I for some reason kept hitting back slash, works like a dream now
which is fantastic as I do use letter navigation a lot to speed my way
through plugin menus.

I definitely have 2.1 installed, and double checked by downloading a
second time and reinstalling/restarting just in case but still no luck
with loading plugin layouts. I also tried turning on the plugin
monitor just to see if that had anything to do with the layout not
loading for some reason though as expected it didn't.

Finally, I have not yet figured out that issue with everything being
to the left of the trackless table, so much so that it is behaving
just like that on my main studio machine and my macbook pro, which are
both working off different versions of OS 10, so I will catch you off
list sometime to discuss that for sure. That behaviour is nothing if
not consistent for me, its hardly related to this plugin layout thing

Thanks again and hope in my multiple reads of your reply and the

Huge thanks to all involved with Flotools & a minor issue with plugin views

2017-01-01 Thread Brian@Wavefield Recordings
Hi all,

So a major thanks first of all, it took me a little while to join the
FloTools party but it is such a revolution as you all know. I'm
particularly excited about how much faster I can do basic routing
stuff etc while clients are in the room during high pressure tracking
situations. Everything is so intuitive.

The only issue so far in the new version is that the included plugin
layout for the EQ3 etc have not installed for some reason. There is no
FloTools folder in library back slash application support for some
reason. When I call up the script for the plugin the layout only has
the 0 comma 0 values entered. For some reason I can't get the track
inspector on and off either, I believe I couldn't do this in version
one as well.

Is there a drop box folder or a page planned for the FloTools website
where I can grab the plugin layouts already created, I hope to create
some myself for the sound toys plugins if somebody hasn't already, as
typing in values in edit fields will make some of their plugins so
much more useful for me and others. I also plan to do Valhalla room if
anyone is interested.

Anyway many thanks and much excitement,
Brian.

AAX plug-ins for impulse responses

2015-05-11 Thread Brian@Wavefield Recordings
Hi guys,

Thought I'd put this question out there quickly as a scan of the
archive hasn't shown up mention of this since the jump to AAX.

Is there or has there ever been a good way to use impulse responses in
PT with Voice Over, do any of the waves ones or anything work?

I have a nice collection of EMT IR's and springs etc I put together
myself which were a big part of my reverb arsenal in Sonar.

If its not an option, would anyone suggest a good third party reverb
to add to the Valhalla room I have..not super impressed with the stock
offerings so far but of course they could be bent into shape.

Brian.

Changing parameters in AAX plug-ins in PT 12

2015-04-29 Thread Brian@Wavefield Recordings
Hi all,

I'm probably missing something but I'm not able to change parameters
with a lasting effect in plug-ins at the moment, thankfully I've no
mixes to finish anytime soon and its interesting getting buy on
presets for rough mixes.

Any parameter changes I make while transport is engaged or while
transport is stopped get changed back to the plug-in or preset
default positions when I resume playback later.

I've tried changing automation modes and tried writing in my changes
as automatin moves in the plug-in but no luck, no parameter changes
will stick for me.

I've scanned through the preferences but no setting seems to be
relevant to this.

Thanks for any answers possible solutions etc,

Brian.

Thanks for the response, yeah the track list table always seems to
come after the tracks in the mix window for me..I fiddled with a few

fairly busy template I have for my analog desk with circa 30 tracks.

Got through tracking 4 songs wwith a 3 piece band today so heres to
 jumping in the deep end.

Still none the wiser about the exact reason for certain things that
happen with Voice Over in Protools but I get the impression that might
be something I'll have to get used to for the time being.

I did run into a problem trying to playback the session after
recording today but it was down to the input only monitoring mode I
had accidentally selected, or at least that seemed to be it.

I've yet to dive into editing and mixing really but a brief encounter
with the trim plug-in to reverse polarity on a track today didn't go
well, for some reason the polarity would only change during playback,
and then when I stopped and hit play again the parameter reverted back
to its default state...the same thing happened with a gate plug-in I
quickly tried out on a snare track, I adjusted all parameters from
the keyboard while listening to the audio and then when I closed the
window and went off to do something else it went back to the default
setting that were there when I first incerted the plug.

I'm sure its something to do with an automation mode or something.

Sorry for going off topic but its been a long, testing but successful

It's odd that you would have seen the tracks list table after all of
your tracks. I've never seen that behavior. To be clear, though, you
are, in fact, seeing the tracks list table in the Mix window? Under
the view menu, you can show or hide the tracks list table. I'm not at
the studio so I'm not 100% sure but I believe it's under the Other
Displays menu. If you're seeing any tracks in the Mix window, that
would suggest that they're being shown and, unless you have something
on the order of 24 tracks, pretty much all of them should be visible
and displaying correctly. Make sure you don't have the narrow mix
window displayed (under the view menu). I don't know what else to
tell you on such short notice. Yeah, good thing you know your preamps
and, as long as you're recording at 24 bits, you have loads of headroom.
Even at your most conservative, you should be fine.

have come out of no where, leading me to be very much less prepared
 than I had thought.

The catch may well be that I'm using PT 12 on osx 10.10 so if
someone has that around and can chime in I'd really appreciate it. I
didn't know any means of sticking to PT 11 on the subscription plan
I have so thought 12 should be fairly consistent in terms of its
 behaviour with Voice over.

I was reading peaks just fine before but can't get any consistent
behaviour now with the tips in this thread or any combination of
hiding and unhiding tracks. Luckily I know my pre-amps ok and should
be able to track without input metering for tomorrows session, but
I'll probably get some strange looks from some observing musician at
some stage when I record super low accidentally or something.

I'm not sure if it is something that has changed in PT 12 but I
don't seem to be getting a pop up list button for the track list in
the mix window, I have a track list table and a group list table.
From using PT ages ago on version 8 and listen to the PT with speech
tutorials I seem to be under the impression there was a pop up
button somewhere for a track list.

Hey Slau,

Thanks for the response, yeah the track list table always seems to
come after the tracks in the mix window for me..I fiddled with a few
things today and low and behold all meters are showing, and its a
fairly busy template I have for my analog desk with circa 30 tracks.

Sorry for going off topic but its been a long, testing but successful
day in studio.

Brian.

 Hi Brian,

Well, you've sure chosen to dive in at the deep end, eh? No pressure ;)

It's odd that you would have seen the tracks list table after all of your
tracks. I've never seen that behavior. To be clear, though, you are, in
fact, seeing the tracks list table in the Mix window? Under the view menu,
you can show or hide the tracks list table. I'm not at the studio so I'm not
100% sure but I believe it's under the Other Displays menu. If you're seeing
any tracks in the Mix window, that would suggest that they're being shown
and, unless you have something on the order of 24 tracks, pretty much all of
them should be visible and displaying correctly. Make sure you don't have
the narrow mix window displayed (under the view menu). I don't know what
else to tell you on such short notice. Yeah, good thing you know your
preamps and, as long as you're recording at 24 bits, you have loads of
headroom. Even at your most conservative, you should be fine.

When I am VO and right arrowing over from the close button of the mix
window, the track list table and other bits and pieces come after all the
 tracks in my session.

No amount of paging up or down and such has seemed to have solved this for
me and even shrinking down the session to only showing 4 or so tracks
doesn't allow me to read meters on all 4 tracks, just a couple.

Voice Over does speak that there is a level meter, just not a value for
 it.

Also when trying to option click or command click stuff I'm not getting
any real luck after routing the mouse to the Voice Over curser, but I'm
new to all this, so there are probably any number of ways I'm shooting
 myself in the foot.

Any quick feedback is much appreciated.

The quad core mini's server or otherwise are very thin on the ground
these days unfortunately, especially here in Ireland.

Plus they're almost becoming a saught after item used so probably not
the best value.

Now I remember why I dislike macs, even shopping on the mac store
online is frustrating as hell!

Thanks for your thoughts!

Is it worth picking up a quad core Mac Mini second hand? If you go

The gs-r 24 m is in fact an amazing desk, so much so I'll invest in a
mac and PT and change everything to use its features fully. Its a
sizable investment though even for a professional setup, but its

think I'm a grown up studio when I have a mac and a desk now, where as

still like, wheres the mixer and what software are you using.

Now figuring out which mac to buy as always is a head ache as they've
ingeniously set out all options to wind up making it a choice between
spending lots or settling for less.

If they still had the quad core mac mini I think that would be perfect
for me, not sure how much performance PT will get out of the current
dual core i7 at the top of the mini range.

I'm coming from a quad core i7 2.7 ghz on the windows side with 16 gig
ram, but the new PT and mac OS is presumably much better at using
hiper threading etc than Sonar 8 and Windows 7, so maybe a seemingly
lesser processor in a mac now won't actually leave me too
 disappointed.

That's kind of off topic though.

 All ideas welcome still!

 Hi guys,

I could send it back but I don't want to because its just a computer

Anyway, I'm weighing up jumping to working off the mac and ProTools
exclusively, which may sound some what foolish an it probably is, but I
did use ProTools and Voice Over for a few projects when 8.0.4 came out
first and I'll mostly be working from my desk and outboard equipment,
 so
it should be a little easier.

I am thinking of going for a quad core imac because a mac pro is out of
 my
budget and I don't need too much processing heft.

So I'd like suggestions of what I should get to start off, I have a
potential list so far and tell me what you might add/change.

 1. Obviously an external thunderbolt drive for the audio, iLock, full
keyboard with the num pad etc, most here seem to recommend a track pad
 too?
 2. The latest osx and protools 12 should cause no problems so may as
 well
 go with the new one?

 3. I want to get the ProTools with speech tutorials straight away to
 get
up and running with basics fast, is it all still up to date and
 relevant?
 4. Does anyone have or wish to compile for me/future users a list of
ProTools preference settings, Voice Over preference settings etc that
 will
serve me well, I have a quick run through the archives but honestly I
don't have time to read anymore than I have and information is
 fragmented
between all the various PT changes etc since 8.0.4.

Other than these things I don't have any huge ideas short of just
 hitting
the buy button and jumping in.

As I say I've used Mac's sparingly and not with loads of joy in the
 past,
and I do have an iPhone so I'm at least some bit in tune with the evil
 Apple ways.

 Thanks in advance,
 Brian.
