So, this is wonderful! I just wonder where exactly we go, and who we

Re: Evaluating AAX Plug-Ins for Accessibility

2014-11-07 Thread Chris Smart

Ed,

Thank you for perhaps the most positive statement regarding
accessibility that I have ever read from any company or
oganization. Especially impressive, beyond your ongoing commitment
to increased accessibility, is your interest in involving third-party
plug-in manufacturers in the process! This hints at industry-wide
change in a positive direction. Honestly, most days, I have felt
like lasting positive change is a pipe dream.

I'm still a Windows user of a competing product, but when I have the
necessary funds, be asured I will be switching to ProTools on the Mac.

Thank you to all involved in this ongoing process, from the folks at
Avid, Apple, other manufacturers, but especially to the blind audio
professionals on this list. This, if nothing else, is a sign of what
respectful professional dialog can accomplish, compared with
infighting, competing interests and barely legible wining that one
sees elsewhere, often among amateur hobbyists with very little at steak.

Hopefully, third-party manufacturers will quickly realize the
benefits of being part of these improvements for us, more blind folks
will be able to participate in college recording programs with little
or know special modification, and especially, we may be able to
simply walk into any studio running the newest ProTools and get to
work. For all I know, a lot of this is already possible.

Thanks again for the much needed positive news.

Can I distribute your update in a few other places? No doubt, others
are also tired of swimming against the tide, especially when so many
boats are finally drifting in the right direction so-to-speak.

Hi there, i think this sounds really great. When we say all user controlable
parameters does that include editing of drum patterns and/or step sequenser
parameters and patterns as well? How would we rate those plugins whos
sequensers etc can't be manipulated? Example of this would be Strike, Boom,
(if i'm wrong here please correct me) Arturia Jupiter8v and CS80V.

 Thanks

Dear Google Accessibility Discussion Group Members:

Avid has recently enjoyed the opportunity to work with visually impaired
audio professionals to improve VoiceOver support for Pro Tools, and we want
to keep these improvements coming. Just as importantly, we want to
encourage our Connectivity Partners (our new collective name for all third
party technology developers) to follow suit. In working with this team, we
drafted a plug-In accessibility rating system that we will soon finalize
and share with third parties. It is our hope that the blind user community
will come to score AAX plug-ins based on this framework or something
similar. Here is the working rating system, for which you are welcome to
 provide input:

AAX plug-in is rated from 1 to 5 with 5 representing strong agreement
 for the following criteria:

 1. Plug-in can be installed and its license authorized without sighted
 assistance.

 2. Plug-in can be registered without sighted assistance

 3. Plug-in supports Pro Tools standard methodology for save/load of
presets or employs a proprietary substitute that supports VoiceOver

 4. All user-controllable parameters are speakable with VoiceOver

 5. Plug-in contains accurate page tables for Avid control surfaces
compatible with Pro Tools 11 or higher

 6. Connectivity Partner makes customer-facing statement in support of
accessibility and provides contact information for related inquiries.

So, let us know what you think, and together, we can make accessibility a
first class citizen on the roadmaps of as many Connectivity Partners as
 possible.

 Gratefully,

 Ed Gray

Re: Evaluating AAX Plug-Ins for Accessibility

2014-11-07 Thread mcdiemert .
Scott,
While I don't have any examples of a developer who has successfully
used a custom browser approach to presets, I can tell you that there
are several extremely nice plugs that have created excellent software
while using the built in preset browser. The Elysia Mpressor, UAD
plugs, as well as all of the McDsp plugs are excellent. Can't
recommend the Mpressor any more highly than any other plug I've ever
used. All of these that I mentioned are extremely accessible,
including presets available within the stock browser popup menu.

Matt

No suggestions of additions to that framework are springing to mind
here (it seems like a thorough system), but it did raise a question.
Has anyone come across one of these proprietary substitute browser
thingies that can actually be used with VoiceOver? I ask because when
communicating with plugin developers, I've often been asked to cite an
example where this stuff has been implemented well, and I don't yet
have any examples to point a curious developer toward.

Awesome to see Avid posting publicly here... thanks for everything
 you've done so far Ed!
