Re: Pro Tools 10 v. 11 Accessibility Improvements

2014-06-26 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
I personally am still on PT10, so you have at least one list member who
hasn't yet converted. the only reason I've not though is financial
reasoning. I have every intention however to upgrade probably in the next
month or two. the only other thing really holding me back is, I don't have
anyone sighted near me who is technologically savvy enough to help me with
getting the PT 10/11 bundle ILok license on my ILok dongle. Aside those two
things though, if I can find a way to work around those issues, I definitely
will be updating, no question.

Subject: Pro Tools 10 v. 11 Accessibility Improvements

Hi PT Access community,

I'm reconnecting with the community after a long absence. I've been
subsisting on PT HD 8 plus Sonar. It appears a lot has happened with PT
accessibility in PT 11.1 while I was gone. I'm just now trying to catch
up

and see if I can benefit from accessibility improvements. Unfortunately,
because I am limited to my HD Accel hardware, I cannot use PT HD 11. And,
because my current MAC Pro is from 2008, it appears I cannot use PT Native
11. After catching up on some of the forum posts, can folks confirm the
below?

-More features are accessible in PT 10 than were previously accessible in
PT 8
-PT 10 accessibility is hindered in Mountain Lion so I should go to
Mavericks or stay on Lion
-MIDI event handling is still inaccessible in PT 10 so I'll need to keep
using Sonar for these tasks until I can move to PT 11.1

Are folks on the list still using PT 10 or has everyone moved up to 11.1
to

take advantage of additional accessibility improvements?

Re: pro tools 10 and 11 both crash during recording with the operating system held off interrupts for to long

2014-05-24 Thread Alan Macdonald
I'm not totally sure regarding the whole server issue. I'll need to look into
that in more detail too I think. In the meantime, I've borrowed an m box and a
small USB Behringer surface to get me through the last few weeks of college,
but obviously this is not a long term solution. It did get me thinking though
and maybe I'm totally clutching at straws here... There is no problem with the
latest version of mavericks, pro tools eleven point one and anything I have
connected via USB, including daisy chain connections through my USB numpad. Its
probably a long shot but what about trying a Firewire to USB adaptor? Nothing
to lose I suppose so I'll try get hold of one and hook the Digi up that way and
post my findings back here afterwards. Not holding my breath though...

I'd think, it should. I know in version 10, which is what I run, it
checked. I'm not sure if it'll be a software update thing like all your
other updates, but when you open PT up, it should prompt you, provided you
have an active internet connection.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

2014-05-21 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
This is partly why I'd not do this on an audio machine. It's gonna be
difficult to pinpoint down what all's running, but, generally...

Yeah, you'd have to know the service name, specifically, then in terminal,
you'd go...

sudo /etc/init.d/servicename stop

Then when done,

sudo /etc/init.d/servicename start

and really, that's a horrible way to stop services, as if you do it through
the back end under the hood with terminal, things might not totally stop
correctly.

I don't think going to login items, nor going to activity monitor is going
to be enough.

Re: pro tools 10 and 11 both crash during recording with the operating system held off interrupts for to long

2014-05-21 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland

Nick,

What type services are you running with the server? This is not off topic
yet, I dont' think, though I could see the potential of it coming so. I'm
just wonderring your reason for using the OSX server to start with. The
server definitely! will take a large amount of resources depending on what
services you have enabled. For instance, are you running the apache http
web server with it? Are you running ftp? Are you running Mail? I mean
what types things are you hosting with the server. Over all, I definitely!
would never, ever ever ever! run a server on an audio production machine.
That in itself is asking for trouble in my opinion. If you're gonna run O S
X server, I'd frankly, just get an inexpensive mac that you could use as a
dedicated server. If server functionality is that paramount, I'd even
possibly look at just setting up a Linux box and going that route. You
really don't want a server running on your ProTools machine though, as you
need to dedicate as much of your system resources to audio production as you
can.

Does that kind a make sense?

Chris.

updates is there a way to see if the update is ready for pro tools yet?

Re: pro tools 10 and 11 both crash during recording with the operating system held off interrupts for to long

2014-05-20 Thread Slau Halatyn
I'm not exactly sure what might be causing these issues. I've never seen them
myself. A couple of things come to mind, however. First, it's never advisable
to update the system software before checking compatibility with Pro Tools, if
that's your main production machine. Yes, I understand that it's common for a
laptop to be a primary machine and double as a person's email & Internet
machine and sometimes it's unavoidable. That said, the reality is that a
production machine running Pro Tools should not be upgraded until it's approved
by avid. Trailblazers are welcome but run the risk of erratic behavior.

Similarly, the 002 is not supported in Pro Tools 11. It might work for some
people in some cases but it's officially unsupported which means it wasn't
fully tested.

Also, I wouldn't recommend turning off Spotlight in general. Spotlight is the
engine that runs search functions in applications like Mail. So, if you use
your computer for mail and ever have to search for messages, turn Spotlight on
but turn off Spotlight indexing for any external drives to which you record
audio.

Re: pro tools 10 and 11 both crash during recording with the operating system held off interrupts for to long

2014-05-19 Thread Alan Macdonald
I have also been experiencing this most frustrating error message reasonably
frequently. I have tried connecting my external hard drive via USB instead of
thunderbolt but to no avail. I tried a different hard drive entirely, same
result. If I put the buffering settings up it then tells me to put them back
down again and vice versa. I have disabled spotlight, and even Wifi etc and the
problem still prevails. The issue is that it's so inconsistent. I recorded a
two hour drum session where it didn't have any problems at all but the next
time I set my equipment up, in the exact same way, the buffering message was
coming up literally every two seconds despite many resets

I am using similar set up to Nick, same Macbook pro and external hard drive
theory but a 002 instead of a 003. Potential fixes? When the recent mavericks
security upgrade was released, that seemed to smooth it out at first but over
time it kept happening again. I borrowed a friend's 0021 at this point to check
but unfortunately same result. Everything pointed to the Mac at this point.

One morning just two weeks ago I was trying to mix at college and it became
impossible to do so with this error message appearing so frequently. I shut the
002 down to mix in the box, knowing the process would take so much longer but
my hands were tied here. Obviously this automatically changed the playback
engine default to pro tools aggregate. No buffering at all for the next two
hours or so. I thought at this point I'll try the Digi again and shut PT down,
turned my session back on and changed the playback engine back to avid '%\002.
I'm happy to say it worked fine then, with only maybe one buffering error every
say four hours on average which still isn't ideal but can be worked around.

As well as changing the playback engine half solution, the other factor I have
noticed is finder. As a side issue, is anyone else having problems with finder
when shutting down? The security upgrade seemed to fix this at first but now
it's happening again and so I think are related. I've tried closing all finder
windows whilst PT is running which again works sometimes but not others. Its
that inconsistency that makes this problem so hard to pin down.

Anyway, I had to do a location recording yesterday and I recorded a choir
performing four songs with no problems, using a total of eight mic's using a
spirit folio sx's first four channels as pre amps and running the line out from
each channel to line in five to eight on the Digi. No buffering issues. Then I
tried to record one guitarist vocalist with two near mic's and a room stereo
pair just using the four digi pre amps and I got the buffering every ten
seconds problem again. The size of the session seems to be irrelevant is what
I'm saying.

Apologies this post has got larger than I hoped but I wanted to give as much
detail as possible. I'm preparing to go into college this morning and I know I
have mixing to do and only three weeks left on my course yet I can't predict
what will happen with my Mac and Digi when I set up. So if anyone has any ideas
on a permanent solution to this problem I would be genuinely eternally
grateful!

Thanks for reading and any subsequent help you may offer.

Oban, Scotland

Hi, There was a message postted on this list about how to fix this AAX
plugin thing and once it is done your RTAS plugins should show up again so
10.2 would be completely usable then as I did this when I had it installed
but forget what it is currently it involves something in the avid folder
there is a folder called plugins and in that folder removing the AAX
folder. I also have the original 10.0 DVD and it was also talked about to
uncheck avid effects in the installation not sure if this helps or not but
wanted to say it worked on my system before I reinstalled mountain lion.

Firstly, Slau, it's no worries mate, I just wasn't sure if you were

J R, I am using Pro Tools 10 on my meager setup, and it works fine.
The only real show stopper is that the plugins have all been converted
to the AAX format, which I'm sure is lovely, but it renders the
configurable parameters completely unconfigurable LOL.

It is worth noting that not all plugins are in AAX, XPand for example,
is still an RTAS, so it works fine, as are a few others.

The isn't usually that much of a problem anyways, because there's a
whole plethora of presets to choose from, but for example, with the
Normalise Audio Sweet plugin, there's no presets, so I cannot
normalise my stuff.

Anyways, hope that's cleared up some stuff.

2012-08-22 Thread Slau Halatyn
Hi J.R.,

The issues, as I understand, are specifically associated with Pro Tools 10.2
under Mountain Lion. Of most concern is the reading of text areas. It's an
operating system-specific problem which may or may not be an issue when Pro
Tools 10 becomes Mountain Lion compatible. Regardless of whether Pro tools 10
is capable of running without immediately crashing under Mountain Lion is
beside the point. It still hasn't been approved and, as usual, there will be
changes in the specific version that is first first officially compatible with
Mountain Lion.

Hope that clears it up.

2012-08-22 Thread Nick Gawronski
Hi, There was a message postted on this list about how to fix this AAX
plugin thing and once it is done your RTAS plugins should show up again
so 10.2 would be completely usable then as I did this when I had it
installed but forget what it is currently it involves something in the
avid folder there is a folder called plugins and in that folder removing
the AAX folder. I also have the original 10.0 DVD and it was also
talked about to uncheck avid effects in the installation not sure if
this helps or not but wanted to say it worked on my system before I
reinstalled mountain lion. Nick Gawronski

Hi Naama,

Absolutely, you'll need either Snow Leopard or Lion for now. Also, Pro
Tools
9 would be recommended. Anything higher than 8.0.4 is fine but, if at all
possible, try to stay away from version 10. If it has to be 10, then that's
workable too.

Hi, I also have pro tools 10.1 and am running under mountain lion just
fine. I am currently interested in audio editing such as voice not
really music as of yet so go by mainly what i hear. My one issue with
downgrading is that the newer models might not be able to be downgraded
and I would also check as some systems do still have lion on them
depends when it was bought so you might not have to do anything. I have
found the people at my local Apple store very helpful and if you have
any issues with downgrading I am sure the people at your local Apple

Absolutely, you'll need either Snow Leopard or Lion for now. Also, Pro Tools

Re: Pro Tools 10 and Mountain Lion

2012-08-22 Thread Slau Halatyn
Hi Naama,

Absolutely, you'll need either Snow Leopard or Lion for now. Also, Pro Tools 9
would be recommended. Anything higher than 8.0.4 is fine but, if at all
possible, try to stay away from version 10. If it has to be 10, then that's
workable too.

Hi Slau,
So I just want to make sure I'm clear - as soon as my work machine arrives,
do I downgrade to Lion before anything else, to avoid problems?

Thanks,

No sarcasm at all. I just didn't want to misunderstand anything since I
currently don't use Mountain Lion. The vagaries of communication lead to
misunderstandings and I just needed to absolutely sure that at least one
person was categorically unable to read the start field with PT 10 under
Mountain Lion.

OK, lemme try and lay this out as clearly and fully as I know it.

Hello,

You can also try going to the events menu and tempo and constant tempo, you
see it does the same thing there. Infact you will notice it does the same in
all edit fields in all of the different event dialog boxes.

Hi:
Well, when you are in the edit window and open the counter or transport
displays, you hear the headings of the fields spoken but no values. I
haven't tried with braille yet so I don't know if that would be different.
Frankly, the only reason I upgraded was because I was interested in the
dictate feature but when I found out that it actually sends anything you
dictate up to apple where it is then processed, that was quite a turn-off.
Fortunately, my hardware seems to be working OK, though I'll rfinally be
getting my M-Audio project mix back (the firewire port got damaged in the
earthquake and I never got around to getting it in the shop, much more
difficult down here than it was in NY to get stuff fixed if you don't drive.

counters are not reading properly? Even in Mountain Lion, that would be
fairly strange, that is, for a text display to not read correctly. That
said, technically, Mountain Lion is not approved for Pro Tools so I'm not

Again, someone with Mountain Lion and Pro Tools 10, please let me know

Hi, Some edit fields read fine like the file names to save projects as
and when you bounce tracks to files. I am using mountain lion but do
have lion still around should I need it. I think it is possible to down
grade to lion if you need to but don't know if the newer mac books will
support the down grade. My digi 003 works fine under mountain lion and
I did not need to reinstall anything. The only thing I had to reinstall
was the drivers for my express card for my sata drive and that was not
even an upgrade I just opened the folder where I had the pkg file and
ran it and things now work great again. Nick Gawronski

Slau, if you go to the events menu, under tempo operations, then go to
constant, for example, you'll see that the tempo value bpm field doesn't
read for example. It tells you it's a numerical value text box, but try as

I haven't tried the Mtn Lion thing but if it as they have said, counters
aren't spoken, then you might want to consider that down grade or do a
resize on your disk partition so you can have a MTN Lion and a Lion
partition.
I suspect right now that is what I will do on the current Mac Book Pro and
probably on the new one when it gets here.

I am supposed to receive a new mac for work, which is editing audio books.
Yes, I know, I know, protools is overkill for this, but this is what they

I will mostly be doing editing, cutting, pasting, etc.

In light of the findings in Mountain Lion and protools, should I downgrade
to Lion before installing protools? I need to do things, as I said, such as
editing, and I also have to keep a close eye on the timeline.

Thanks for any advice,

No, nothing's changed. they still don't read, which being I need to know
things like my counter clusters, and also being able to read my tempo, oh,
and the fact the meters in each track didn't read... at least they didn't on
my end, so, yeah... needless to say, I repartitioned my drive. Now I got
Snow Leopard on my audio production system, running PT 10.0, as anything
higher's gone AAX, and though there was a trick posted here to remove those
plugins and get the RTas back, it didn't work when I tried it, so, yeah...

Then on my other partition which doesn't have PT at all on it, I have ML,
which I do all my normal personal work in like E-mail, web browsing,
watching DVD's, etc. etc.

previews a few months back. I will try it with the latest version of
PT10 and the actual release version of ML and let you know.

I'm not sure about how successful a downgrade would be with new hardware. Apple
would probably be the best source for that information. Regarding Pro Tools
itself, if 9 is broken, I'd bet 10 won't work reliably with Mountain Lion.

Hi, As I bought a boxed version of pro tools 10 and did register with
Avid they probably did not create me an account right? If not how can I
get an Avid account and get access to the latest DVD? Is 10.2 totally
unusable or once I delete those plugins should I be able to use it ok?

I think what people are trying to say, is that if you get an iLok with
a license for PT 10 on it, it automatically authorizes PT 9 as well,
at least I know mine's a combined license or something.

Re: Pro Tools 10

No Chris, I'd think that would be fine as you're right, it's not like you're
giving someone a license. Not only this, but back when 9 was the most
recent thing, you didn't have to buy p t 9 to get just the dvd. Had you
downloaded the 30 day trial, that would have given you the full dmg of the
dvd. The only thing that made it different as either a trial or as the full
fledged thing was what type asset was on the ilok. If you had a trial
license, then, yeah... if you had the full thing, then you were in business.
So yeah, you're exactly right, it probably wouldn't be a problem seeing Avid
was offerring the 9 DVD just as they offer the 10.2 DVD now for free. The
DVD itself can't be used any how as you said without a valid asset of some
sort.

Re: pro tools 10 accessibility question for a new user with a mac book pro 17 inch

2011-12-21 Thread Stephen Martin
That is one large laptop u got there my friend, hope u have a suitcase to cary
that lunch tray around in lol. Any versionf of Pro tools from version 8.04 and
up is accessible with Voiceover on the mac. Get comfortable with Voice over
first. That being said its not completely accessible. If memory server correct
Majority of the audio recording and editing and mixing is accessible. Not all
midi stuff is however, I can't comment on that as I don't use midi and at all
and all my audio needs are met with the program. IF you have an avid interface
selecting inputs and outputs in Protolls should be fine, but stuff you may have
to go into the controls control pannel for in system preferences may or may not
be accessible. 4GB of ram should be fine as I am perfectly capble to mix 10 to
12 track projects on my MacBook air with 4GB of ram and their are a couple of
plug ins on each track. So get to know your mac then venture into the world of
ProTools.
