Re: stupid automation question

2021-06-29 Thread Slau Halatyn
Hi Steve,

Regular automation involves 3 main things and plug-in automation requires an
additional step. As with any automation, Command+4 on the num pad brings up the
Automation window where you must make sure that automation is not suspended.
Its the first element in the window and make sure it's not selected. Next, make
sure Plug-in automation is selected in that window. Next, in your track, make
sure your automation mode is set to Write. Then open the plug-in that you wish
to automate. In the plug-in window, press the Auto Enable button. In the first
text area, double-click on each parameter that you wish to automate. The
selected parameters will show up in the text area to the right. Press OK and
you're ready to automate the selected parameters. Of course, this is the
Readers Digest versin of automating plug-ins but it'll hopefully get you going.

Re: stupid automation question

2021-06-29 Thread Rory McDonald
Press command 5 I believe it is to bring up the automation window, make sure
the suspend automation button is not selected, then select plug in automation.
Go into your plug in of choice, and find the plug in automation enable button,
hit that, then first table is the options for what you can automate, second is
the ones you've added. When you've found and added the one you want find the
close button, then go back to the mix window and make sure the track automation
is set to write, go back in the plug in window hit play and automate away.
I probably have some of the details wrong, haven't touched automation in a
while but thats pretty much how you do it, hope that helps some.

stupid automation question

2021-06-29 Thread Steve Sparrow
Can someone remind me how to enable plugging automation. I’ve not had to do
this for some time. Autotune is the plugin I want to automate.
I generally go through the audio sweet menu, and process the results. \
automating this would surely be a better way i’d think.

Re: Automation question.

2019-11-15 Thread Juan Pablo Culasso Alonso
Slau, i had success!
I selected a portion of 20 seconds of a clip, automated pan from left to center
by the first 3 seconds, and in the automation window y pressed the button
Write Automation to Selection End on Stop
So after the second 20 the sound as I expected, it returns to the left.
So now I need to check if in the Eucon app, there is already an option to atach
to a key in my avid transport to this three buttons.

Thanks,
JP.

Re: Automation question.

2019-11-15 Thread Slau Halatyn
Juan,
There could be any number of reasons your panning isn't sticking to the right
side. I'd suggest the following:
1. Set your track view to pan.
2. Select everything from beginning of the session to the end with Option Shift
Return and press Delete.
3. Confirm that your audio is still there.
4. Put your track into Auto Latch mode and, with your pan at center, engage the
transport and pan to the left.

When you stop the transport, your track should remain panned to the right.

Another approach you can take is to do this in Auto Write mode and, once you've
panned to the right, press the Write to End button in the Automation window.
You'll get a dialog informing you that automation has been written to the end
of the timeline.

Further, it appeared that you had Trim mode checked before engaging the
transport. Don't use Trim mode in this case. Make sure it's unchecked. Trim
mode is meant to make relative changes to already recorded automation data.

Let me know if this process works for you.

Re: Automation question.

2019-11-14 Thread Juan Pablo Culasso Alonso
Sure, Slau.

I am reffering specifically to automate in protools ultimate.
I am in the automation window, and for example, I select 10 seconds
How can i automate this 10 seconds∑
When I press the button
Write Automation to Selection Start, for example, I get the message: No
automation was written.
The same happens in Write Automation to Selection
If I press the button
Write Automation to Selection on Stop
It`s becomes selected, i press the play button, move the fader and when i
return to the button
Write Automation to Selection
I got the same message

Other question is?
Even putting the mode in latch, in volume or pan automation, when press stop
and go back to read, the last parameter when i left the fader is not remembered
in volume or pan.

I reed the protools reference guide, tried to get som youtube tutorials but i
did not advance too much.

Thanks again for your help and patience.

2019-11-13 Thread Slau Halatyn
Well, good for you! OK, now when you go to the Automation window, you'll see
buttons for writing to the start, end or entire length of the session from
beginning to end. With an Avid control surface, there are dedicated buttons for
these functions. Anyway, you'll have a much easier time with Ultimate.

Re: Automation question.

2019-11-13 Thread Slau Halatyn
For controls like panning, where you want the value to remain the same, use
Latch mode. In other words, if you start from one set of values and change
while in Latch mode, the subsequent automation data will stay at the last
recorded value. This theoretically works with faders as well but some people
have had limited success doing it with faders. Pan automation should work fine.

Now, you say you've upgraded to Ultimate? If you have, then the automation
process will be infinitely easier. Let me know when you have it installed.

Absolutely amazing, slau.
And for panning? I tried some pan automation and for example, if the start
point is 70 left 30 right and I go to 30 left and 70 right, after press the
stop button and play the track, the automation looks fine but after the end of

Hi Juan,
The thing to remember is that Pro Tools Ultimate can do this simply but Pro
Tools Vanilla has no way of doing this simply. What you need to remember is,
once you've written automation, that's the level that the parameter will return
to whenever you stop recording. So, if you wish to end up at minus 3 dB, that's
where you start right at the top with minus 3 dB in write mode. Then start
again from the top at minus infinity and raise your level to minus 3 dB and
the track should then remain at minus 3 dB for the rest of the timeline.

A guaranteed way of getting this result is to let the track play for its entire
duration while in write mode while you make your level adjustments.

Again, this is very straight-forward with PT Ultimate. If you do a lot of
automation all the time and you're using Pro Tools on a daily basis, consider
upgrading to Ultimate. It's expensive at first but it pays off over the long
run the more you use it.

Automation question.

2019-11-06 Thread Juan Pablo Culasso Alonso
Hello all,

Just for know.
When I make an automation after put the mode in write, I need quickly turn down
completely the volume after press the play button and after make the necessary
curve.
If I did not do it, and for example put the volume in 0 db, before press play..
after end the automation, the track continues in volume minus infinite.
Why? Is there a way that after automation the track continues in the same level
after end the automation?
Slau talk about trim automation that is availabe in ultimate. How it works∑

Re: More automation question.

2017-09-04 Thread Slau Halatyn
Hi John,
Yep I mentioned Clip Gain in my response but the problem with that particular
approach is that, if you want to change the value by several decibels, there's
an abrupt audible change at the beginning and end of the selection. It's true
that, in a given track, that change might not be detectable at all but, yes, it
certainly is an option.

2017-09-04 Thread John André Lium-Netland
Hi,

Another feature that is great for such situations, is to make a selection and
change the gain for that portion of the track by holding down control-shift and
use up/down arrow keys. the amount of change for each arrow key press is set in
the preferences. If you change the overall level of the fader, you will still
see the same amount of relative change in the track volume, since the actual
gain of that part of the track is changed. It really works great! :)

Best,
John André

Re: More automation question.

2017-09-03 Thread Slau Halatyn
Hi JP,
In HD, instead of write or touch mode, there's a trim mode that adjusts
everything according to the delta value of the fader (or the difference between
0 dB and the new fader position). In other words, let's say your actual
automation had a fader at minus 10 dB. When you get into trim mode and adjust
the fader to be three decibels lower, the new fader automation would be at
minus 13 decibels and any subsequent fader moves would be proportionately three
decibels lower than the original values. That's it in a nutshell.

set the automation mode to Write. Make a pass and see if you're happy with it.
If not, set it to write mode again and repeat until you're satisfied.

Re: Automation question

2017-06-25 Thread Slau Halatyn
Hi Joy,
I'm not sure why splitting the clip would have any effect whatsoever. Hmm… What
I can tell you, however, is that, if you set a filter to take effect, Pro Tools
will assume that whatever the parameter is set to is what you want all along .
So, this is how you would normally handle this scenario:

1. Auto-enable the parameter you wish to sweep but leave it at its default
position or where you want it to be up until the automation move.
2. Set the automation mode to Write and engage the transport briefly and stop
the transport.
3. Move the insertion point to where you wish to start the sweep. Now you have
to decide whether you want the parameter to return to the original value or end
up on the new value and stay there throughout the rest of the timeline. If you
want it to return to the original value, make sure you're in Touch mode. If you
want the parameter to remain where you leave it at the end, make sure you're in
Latch mode.
4.Engage the transport and perform the automation move with the surface, either
in fader flip or using the encoder knob..

Depending on the mode, the parameter will either jump back to the original
value or stay where you left off.

One way to solve the problem you just had with the parameter being in the wrong
position up until the point where the automation was supposed to kick in is the
following:
1. Select the timeline from the beginning up until the point where the
automation is supposed to begin.
2. Make sure you're in Write mode and, while holding down Option, either touch
the fader for the paramter or the encoder. This will set it to its default value
3. Engage the transport and press the "Write to All" button if the surface has
one or the "Write to All/Selection" button in the Automation window. I can't
remember what it's called in vanilla. There's a shortcut for HD systems but
you'll have to issue that command either from the surface or in the Automation
window.

Hope that helps,
Slau

Re: Automation question

2017-06-25 Thread 'Joy Bausch' via Pro Tools Accessibility
Hey Slau,
thanks for your reply. I'm writing my automation with an Artist Mix controller,
which works great.
The trouble I was having was that ProTools wouldn't recognize that I wanted
automation on two bars only. What happened was that the selection before the
one in question suddenly also was getting a filter treatment. I started the
sweep at 1k, and since that's where the frequency was, the part before the 2
bars now was affected.
What I did then, successfully, was split clips, and now it's working. Is that
what I was supposed to do from the beginning, I wonder? *smile*

best,
Joy

Re: Automation question

2017-06-25 Thread Slau Halatyn
In terms of an automated sweep, you'd need to enable plug-in automation in the
Automation window, enable the specific parameter in the Auto Enable dialog in
the plug-in window and get into write mode for starters. Ideally, you'd need a
control surface to perform the sweep of the parameter over the course of the
two bars. If you don't have a surface, you'll be limited to the speed at which
VoiceOver changes the parameter in question and that might be entirely too
slow, it depends on the parameter. One workaround is to play back at half speed
while doing the automation pass. This gives you twice as much time to complete
the move. This is actually helpful even with a surface as sometimes you need
more control over quick moves.

A sighted user can draw in moves with breakpoints. Unfortunately, that's not
currently possible with VoiceOver alone. Control surface, control surface,
control surface—yeah, I know, I'm repeating myself but for good reason ;)
At any rate, hope that helps,
slau

Automation question

2017-06-25 Thread 'Joy Bausch' via Pro Tools Accessibility
Hey list,
i'm at a loss here. I know i should know this, but I just can't figure it out.
Scenario: I want to apply a filter-sweep to my mix, lasting two bars. It's in
the middle of the song, so I want the filter to be passive at first, then do
the sweep, and after it go back to being passive. Is this possible, like a
region-based automation? Or do I need to automate the entire track?
Any help welcome, many thanks.

Command-a doesn't select every track. In the Edit window, Command-a selects the
entire range of the timeline. You can select the tracks within the track list.

Hi Steve,

Rather than dealing with groups and overlapping ranges of tracks within
different groups, enabling and disabling groups, etc. Select the tracks for
which you wish to change the automation mode and do the following:
Focus on the automation mode pop-up menu for one of the selected tracks.
Route the mouse pointer to the pop-up menu with Control-Option-Command-f5.
While holding Option-Shift, press the mouse button and select an automation
mode.
The Option-Shift modifiers will apply the same automation mode to all selected
tracks.

Re: automation question; Mix Attributes

2015-01-23 Thread Steve Sparrow
Ok cool. that looks good. so the only query is, if i f i do this. and select
the automation on the mix group. will i have the ability to right automation
for each track. or if i right automation for one faer is it going to change all
the other tracks. So what i’m after is this. i need to have automation selected
so i can mix a pile of tracks in a session using my control surface. i don’t
need the same automation across all tracks in the group. the main thing is i’d
like to be able to turn on automation over 20 or more tracks without selecting
them individually. Is this what the group will allow me to do.
not sure if i’m making sense.

What I do is to select the tracks I want then hit "command G" to get in to the

I usually select the "edit/mix group option which is the pt default.
If you haven't been in to the groups dialogue I could walk you through it if

Re: automation question; Mix Attributes

2015-01-23 Thread CHUCK REICHEL
Hi Steve,
About the automation question for all tracks.
Make a group from the selected tracks you want to automate now when in the
groups dialogue choose the "Automation Mode option" & check it.
You'll find this option after you select the " Attributes" tab.
The quick way is to build a VO item chooser and type in auto this will limit
the time to find it.
This will change all tracks in that group when that group is selected to what
ever you change any of the tracks in that group.
IE If you change one of the group members to latch they all go in to latch.

Hey slau, thanks. works just fine. Thanks also to mike. i will try that as well.

The whole thing would be easier with a control surface, but i think i should be
able to get by with all this.

i guess the only other interesting question is this. is there any way of
selecting all tracks for spiffic tasks like say automation. Normally when i am
mixing in sonar, i select all tracks, and turn on automation. is this possible
in protools, or do we need to go and physically select each track for
automation individually.
Sorry about the endless amount of questions. I am almost ready to make the jump
from sonar to protools in my studio. i think.
just trying to think of things in my work flow that i may need to accomplish
when using tools.

Re: automation question

2015-01-23 Thread Slau Halatyn
Hi Steve,

As expected, doing this with a control surface is simple but, since you don't
have access to one there, you'll need to improvise.

I'm used to having the option of writing to an entire selection but that might
be an HD feature, I'm not sure, to be honest. However, I think this might work:

Select the range for which you want to write new volume automation.
When you play back that section, your volume fader will reflect the written
volume automation level.
Set your track's automation mode to Write.
Set your volume fader to the desired volume level.
Engage the transport for the duration of the selection.

You should have the new automation level written now.

Control-Shift-up and down arrow commands are for clip gain, not for automation.

HTH,

Slau

automation question

2015-01-23 Thread Steve Sparrow
i’ve basically sussed out how to write and delete automation. only thing i
can’t seem to work out is how to just an individual phraze that i may have
selected
i think i wrote a static pass of automation, but maybe i did not do i t
correctly. although i’ve been over the instructions a couple of times.
i was also under the impression that control shift up and down arrow are key
strokes to do this, but i can’t seem to get this to work either.
so what i’m getting is this. When i move the fader up and down it will write
fine, but if i make a selection, and then move the fader to where i want for
that specific point, how do i write the automation for that point only.can this
be achieved after you have written automation to a track just to tidy things
up.

I have to do this without a control surface. I have the mackie universal
control surface with an extender which is excellent. but i am working in
broadcast as well and can not get my control surface down there, so i’ll have
to do the best i can without one. Maybe i can convince them to buy one one day.
but that’s a way off.

Half-speed playback is fixed at half-speed. Fast-forward amounts can be

Hi Steve,

One solution that might help you to some degree is to use half-speed playback.
Press Shift-space Bar and the transport will playback at half-speed and any
fader moves you make will play back at normal speed when you finish the
automation pass. It's not the best but it might help you in this case.

What you can try though,
Use Clip Gain. Select the track and highlight the location you want to edit.
To lower the level of say your vocals, hold down control, shift, and down
arrow to the volume you want.

Use the same key command with up arrow to raise said vocals.
Remember your start and end point must be set correctly

Re: automation question

2015-01-16 Thread Slau Halatyn
You can fade from region boundaries but the resulting fade in always just goes
to full power of the clip and fade outs start from full power and fade out
completely. To be sure, the shape of the curve can be changed but it's not the
same as a volume ride. It's limited in terms of function, shape, etc.

Re: automation question

2015-01-16 Thread Nick Gawronski
Hi, I have totally forgotten about this ability. Is there a way to
change the speed or is there a method for playing back at twice the
speed and still hear all tracks? I am using normal pro tools 11. Nick

Hi Steve,

One solution that might help you to some degree is to use half-speed playback.
Press Shift-space Bar and the transport will playback at half-speed and any
fader moves you make will play back at normal speed when you finish the
automation pass. It's not the best but it might help you in this case.

Hi Steve,
Volume Automation with out a hard surface and ProTools
may be difficult.
What you can try though,
Use Clip Gain. Select the track and highlight the location you want to edit.
To lower the level of say your vocals, hold down control, shift, and down
arrow to the volume you want.

Use the same key command with up arrow to raise said vocals.
Remember your start and end point must be set correctly
hope this helps

PS you can undo this function with undo...

some way of fading from one point to another. or does anyone have any
sujestions as to how this could be done.

Thanks in advance.
