I think in the osgeo4w installer you just have to install the gdal-filegdb
package for that driver.

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS server in professional use?

2021-10-17 Per discussione Saulteau Don
I haven't had major issues getting a QGIS map server deployed on apache,
but sometimes there would be a thing or two not included in the
step-by-step because individual setups can be different and also require a
diverse level of knowledge and skill sets.

Consider that to get it going you likely had to:

 - deploy a server (windows or linux?)
 - setup a datastore (a database or traditional flat file?)
 - manage and prep your software, data and maps (qgis, qgis server)
 - configure and deploy the web host (iis, apache, nginx?)
 - configure the web host to host the qgis map server

Each one of those components is an industry in itself. As GIS we are often
allowed to or expected to dabble in one or all of them (hence the jack of
all trades, master of none).

So keep trying and reach out for support in any of those specific areas as
it can take a little to learn where the issues actually lie when problems
arise.

Good luck!

Re: [Qgis-user] Building Historical Maps

2021-07-24 Per discussione Saulteau Don
I did a timeline kind of showing that but for all of Canada. It was part of
a workshop doing a talk on territorial evolution and treaties.

It uses the data from the series of maps at
http://www.historicalatlas.ca/website/hacolp/national_perspectives/boundaries/UNIT_17/U17_Timeline/U17_timeline_1713.htm

I requested it and they were kind enough to share so you may find some help
from the researchers who put that historical atlas together.

Re: [Qgis-user] Compiling messages Qgis 3.18.3

2021-06-10 Per discussione Saulteau Don
The patch resolved almost all of them! It's left a single CRS that couldn't
be:

Could not execute: INSERT INTO tbl_srs(srs_id,
description,projection_acronym,ellipsoid_acronym,parameters,srid,auth_name,auth_id,is_geo,deprecated)
VALUES (63
321, 'Timbalai 1948 / RSO Sarawak LSD (m)','omerc','omerc','+proj=omerc
+no_uoff +lat_0=4 +lonc=115 +alpha=53.315820472 +gamma=53.130102361
+k=0.99984
+x_0=200 +y_0=500 +ellps=evrstSS +towgs84=-679,669,-48,0,0,0,0
+units=m +no_defs',520003321,'EPSG','29874',0,0) [UNIQUE constraint failed:
tbl_srs.srs_
id/UNIQUE constraint failed: tbl_srs.srs_id]

1 CRSs could not be updated.

Tested on QGIS 3.18.3 and Arch Linux.

To get the patch:
1.) Go to the issue that Andrea referenced at
https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/pull/43671 and click the "commits" tab
2.) copy the patch link with the clipboard button and paste that into your
browser
3.) add .diff to it like so,
https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/commit/4036e3d6ae71ffefc48a22295e338f59502949bb.diff

that's the patch file =) download it or put it in a notepad and save it.

This particular patch is being applied to 'master' so it's important to
Find & Replace the reference to the /proj/ folder.
It's because the /proj folder doesn't exist in the 3.18.3 source package
and the patch won't apply.

Then, you can change directly into the qgis source folder after you extract
it, apply the patch, then make, make install.

cd
patch -Np1 -i /srs-fix.diff

is an example of applying the patch with the 'patch' utility

Re: [Qgis-user] sharing qgis project networking

2020-03-09 Per discussione Saulteau Don
Hey Cecilia,

when connecting over LAN, by default, the host is your computer name, and
the port is 5432 if it hadn't been changed in the postgresql.conf and your
firewall has to have that port open.

If users are connecting via WAN, then your router also has to forward that
port to your machine and users need to enter your WAN IP as the host (could
also use a DNS for external users if you don't have a static IP).

There's a little bit of config required to get it working right and also
consider using SSL to encrypt user logins over the WAN.

For users, they should ideally have their own login and password because
maybe you don't want everyone making permanent changes to the project in
the database.

There's a postgresql mailing list for help and lots of online resources for
configuring postgresql.

Can you explain the workflow a little bit?

For example, you can have a postgresql database to host the project[1] that
other users can access over the network...

Permissions for changing the master project could be controlled by the
database and maybe even setup triggers to track any changes to the project.

Re: [Qgis-user] Opening attribute table for large datasets

2019-06-12 Per discussione Saulteau Don
Hi William, fellow BC'er here.

One thing you can do is change the default behaviour, like instead of
loading all features, try loading only features visible on map (or selected
features).

Can change that in Settings > Options then the Data Source tab. You'll see
an "attribute table behavior" pull down menu with some self-explanatory
options.

Some hotkeys that also work, without changing the default attribute table
behaviour are:

F6 - open attribute table
Shift + F6 - open attribute table showing only selected features
CTRL + F6 - open attribute table showing only visible features on canvas

Happy QGIS'ing!

Noticed it's part of this QEP, at least the snapping functionality is
really what I'm looking for. Cause I was trying to split a polygon directly
in half using the mid-point on the edges.

[Qgis-user] adding a vertex in the middle of the edge of a polygon

2019-05-31 Per discussione Saulteau Don
I was reading the docs on the Vertex Tool in QGIS 3.6.3.

https://docs.qgis.org/3.4/en/docs/user_manual/working_with_vector/editing_geometry_attributes.html#basic-operations

It mentions that to add a new vertex, I simply need to double-click the
line and it will add one using the vertex tool. I can't get it to work
though.

If I double-click this red X (which represents the middle of the segment
between two other vertices), the behaviour I am seeing is that it selects
the phantom middle vertex for me to move it else where (similar to what a
single-click does). I have to "triple" click but that isn't placing the new
vertex exactly in the centre where the imaginary red X is being displayed
to indicate it's the middle of the line. There's no snapping being applied
once it goes into "drag" mode.

I would like to add a vertex at the exact middle of the line where the red
X appears when you hover over it.

How do I add a vertex in the middle of a polyline segment?

[Qgis-user] drop shadow blur radius limit

2019-03-11 Per discussione Saulteau Don
I was trying to apply a drop shadow to a polygon using the "draw effects"
in the symbology tab but noticed the blur radius has a hard coded limit of
16.

The map i'm producing is fairly large (60"x60") and needed a higher value
like 30-40 to make it appear nice and noticeable when exported and printed.

Is this a bug or by design?

FYI: Font/Labels can have a higher value than 16.

Running QGIS 3.6.0 on Arch Linux 5.0.0 64-bit.

Ah k, I see its usefulness now! Was recently styling a roads datasets with
a couple dozen categories. Definitely helped identify ones I needed to

[Qgis-user] empty place holder for categorized values?

2019-02-22 Per discussione Saulteau Don
Afternoon everyone!

I've always been curious why, when styling a vector layer using categories,
there's an entry at the bottom of the list that is always empty with 0
features.

In 3.6 it comes in with the value "all other features".

Does it serve some purpose that I'm missing?
I often just remove it.

That got me thinking, is there a default behaviour setting for this so I
can save myself a click or two?

Hey Janneke,

I use linux so the menus might be a little different for you.

But at the top menus, look for Settings > Panels > Processing Toolbox Panel
On Windows the Panels sub-menu might be in another place like View instead
of Settings.

Another easy way to turn on the processing toolbox is to right click on an
empty space in the user interface (on a grey spot near another toolbar for
example) and there is a menu that pops up with 'Processing Toolbox Panel'
to toggle on and off.

Lastly, the tools can be searched at the bottom left of QGIS (hotkey
CTRL+K) which is what I tend to use quite a bit.

Re: [Qgis-user] QGOS maps fort Garmin GPS

2017-03-05 Per discussione Saulteau Don
i also have a garmin 76csx and have used for a long time, still and for
closely for the same (original post) purpose, and there are some hard
limitations in the device regarding cartographic needs you need to
consider...

first, that device doesn't really support the new garmin raster type .map
overlays, and as a result is limited to tracks and waypoints. But it has an
excellent gps receiver with a microsd slot to allow uploads of large
amounts of data which is the bonus i like.

I haven't had a chance to test the Monterra from garmin which might allow
usage of apps like Avenza PDF Maps, which is really handy because with that
I can create high quality cartographic and custom maps to easily upload and
navigate with while making use of the excellent gps receiver.

i live in northern british columbia where the data is what it is so I
experience these tedious workarounds a lot!

it helps to learn the gpx format and fields/attributes that the device
looks for when seeking styling and as a result demands some creativity from
my end to get it into the device without having to style it in the device
(ex, 1st order streams vs the rest, trails > side road > public road >
highway, contours - intermediate etc...)

I primarily use DNRGPS application to interface with the garmin 76csx

Data awareness in BC is also something that comes in hand and learning how
to query those datasets effectively, like the Fresh Water Atlas (FWA) or
the Digital Road Atlas (DRA) to get started!

Also note that the latest Canvec 50k dataset for "most" of BC contains the
contour data found in TRIM BC - another bonus!

Re: [Qgis-user] Data Defined operation

2017-02-07 Per discussione Saulteau Don
It says it wants to see the colour value as a string.

So in your case, you can use a CASE THEN ELSE END statement to get there.

CASE WHEN "Type" = 'SL' THEN '255,0,0,100' END

There the numbers represent 'red,green,blue,alpha'
Alpha is the transparency value. 0 is completely transparent and 100 is not
transparent.

The NTv2 GSB[1] for Canada is shared under the "Open Government License -
Canada"[2].

I made a request some years ago and they did it! So it's definitely a good
step forward.

I'm not a license guru so not sure if it can be packaged and redistributed
with FOSS (ie, QGIS or proj).

I know for provincial (cause I'm in British Columbia) the Provincial
Government has their own GSB for distribution, albeit a different and

would be a good bet too.

Re: [Qgis-user] Couldn't load SIP module.

2015-06-01 Per discussione Saulteau Don
Hey,

You can try a couple things. This error rears its ugly head all the time.

Things to try:

1.) Recompile the following packages from the ABS in the following order:
sip, pyqt4, qscintilla
  a) Then recompile QGIS.

2.) Check the sources portion of the PKGBUILD and see if it's because of
the console.py patch being masked out. You can reference the qgis PKGBUILD
to see how that patch is applied in the prepare section. This console.py
patch hasn't been merged into upstream yet, though a pull request was
issued some time ago now. IMO it should be merged ASAP because it's a
breaker bug.

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS 64-bit, Processing Toolbox and Grass 7

2015-04-14 Per discussione Saulteau Don
There's a crowdfunding campaign[1] underway to get QGIS updated for GRASS 7.

So yes, like Jose pointed out, some of the grass7 tools in processing will
have errors.

You can compile QGIS without any of the cmake options for GRASS, because I
think those are only if you want to have the GRASS plugin (that toolbar).

If you want GRASS 7 in Processing, you can update the providers in the
processing options and also double check that the needed env vars[2][3] for
GRASS exist.

Upgrading the toolbar for GRASS7 support is also part of the crowd funding
too.

Grass 7 within the OSGEO4Win 64-bit package, but is anyone aware of a
mechanism to configure the 64-bit version of QGIS (2.8/9) to load

I have both installed on my system but haven't been able to find a

Re: [Qgis-user] 2.6 very slow to render

2014-11-25 Per discussione Saulteau Don
Depending on the operating system, the .qgis2 (see the leading period) is
in the users home folder.

On linux this would be /home/username/.qgis2 and in Windows it's usually at
C:\Users\.qgis2\

I think it gets created regardless of plugins because it stores a lot of
other things like user settings and configurations made.

Try backing up your .qgis2 folder (ie, rename to .qgis2.backup)

Re: [Qgis-user] Select a line or polygon to cut and paste to a new layer

2014-11-25 Per discussione Saulteau Don
There's an answer on GISse (http://gis.stackexchange.com/a/20967/1297) that
says the following:

   1. Start a edit session on both layers that you want to do the
   copy/paste against.
   2. Use the Select feature by rectangle tool to select the feature (copy
   from).
   3. Click the Copy Features button.
   4. Highlight the feature in the TOC that the feature will be pasted to.
   5. Click the Paste Features button.

That might help.

The select tools are in a single button (little arrow to expand for other
selection tools). There's an explanation on the qgis 2.6 visual changelog
at

That sip error has me stumped, the only thing I could guess is that

Hey Mary,

This sounds like it could be a projection issue.

Can you see if they actually overlap?

You can check that quickly by highlighting (left click) the layer in the
layer list, then go to View - Zoom To Layer
Do that for both layers and see if the Zoom to Layer takes you different
places.

Hi Andres,

You probably just have to install GRASS [1] and SAGA [2] because those
aren't included with QGIS. They are entirely separate software packages =)

Then you will probably have to configure the processing toolbox [3] so that
the GRASS and SAGA tools can be used. Those can be found in the providers

Another option is OSGeo4W [4] which provides an installer that will get all

Run ./run_linux.sh to launch Roam itself.

Re: [Qgis-user] Problem opening .GDB (v 10.1) using QGIS

2014-03-27 Per discussione Saulteau Don
This is because something changed in ArcGIS = 10.x on how they apply the
BC Albers projection (EPSG:3005).

Those datasets now have to be opened in ArcGIS and the projection has to be
Defined as BC Albers, because it's using PCS_Albers (projection name),
gdal sees this as a custom projection so it won't list any layers.

This is annoying, because BC Albers and PCS_Albers, besides the difference
in name, have the exact same parameters.

I've tried to contact the GeoBC folks when this came up, but didn't get a
response. Simply asking them to please assign the BC Albers projection to
the DRA and the FWA so that we can access it using the FileGDB API via GDAL
(or QGIS!).

I posted in the ArcGIS forums to discover this [0].

Re: [Qgis-user] QspatiaLite plugin 4.1.1 error message

2014-03-19 Per discussione Saulteau Don
I think for plugin issues, you will have better luck notifying the plugin
maintainer or seeing if it's already reported in their issue tracker.

https://code.google.com/p/qspatialite/issues/list is where you can see that
specific bug tracker for the qspatialite plugin.

FYI, 4.1.1 looks like a version number, maybe for libspatialite?

You can use gdalwarp from the raster menu to convert the image to
whatever format you need, reproject it, and also clip it all in one step.

If the gui isn't self explanatory, see the full suite of options at
http://www.gdal.org/gdalwarp.html You can manually input any of those in
the bottom of the gdalwarp gui.

To make things really easy, you don't even have to extract the zip and
decompress the bil file (takes a long time!).

You can manually input the bil file to make use of vsizip with something
like /vsizip/HWSD_RASTER.zip/hwsd.bil This would read the dataset from
within the zip file instead of from on disk somewhere.

Re: [Qgis-user] configuración otb y grass

2014-01-20 Per discussione Saulteau Don
I think \xf3 is the ascii code for ó as seen at http://daleswanson.org/ascii.htm

Maybe the algorithm is having trouble interpreting that character if
it's in any of the file names or the path to those files.

Worst case, you would have to remove that from all your filenames, but
maybe it can be fixed by adjusting the operating systems default
encoding that supports that character?

Unless someone knows that this limitation is part of python or QGIS?

1.) Download that zipfile of the Tunisian Admin Boundaries
2.) Open QGIS.
3.) Switch to Browser panel near bottom left of window (this is

4.) Browse to the folder where the TUN_adm.zip file is.
5.) Expand, click the '+' sign beside the zip file, then click and

 1) I've download 64 byte QGIS 2.0.1 - no problems.
 2) I then separately go here: http://www.diva-gis.org/gdata , and download
the administrative areas zip file from under the Tunisia option (though,
again, I did try other countries to test after running into said problems).
The zip (attached) includes files for different admin levels, but also all
the files for adm1 that I require.
 3) I have done several things at this point - from going directly to the
TUN_adm1.shp and trying to open as, to most recently opening up QGIS
first, selecting add vector layer and then going to the specific .shp file
(TUN_adm.shp). I have also pulled that file out of the zip and put it by
itself on the desktop and then tried to open through the 'add vector layer'
 button.
 4) On these last attempts, the shp file has now assumed the QGIS icon
(whereas before, when trying to open as, it either converted it to a pdf,
or asked for additional software to open a NirCmd file (nirsoft.net)) -- a
puzzle I never solved, but seemed on the wrong track anyway).
 5) Alas, I can browse, select the TUN_adm1 file, then open, but always get
the following message for 3 seconds before it disappears:

Invalid Data Source: C:\Users\Matt Klick\Desktop\TUN_adm1.shp is not a valid
 or recognized data source

Re: [Qgis-user] New dialog when opening layer with a different CRS

2014-01-03 Per discussione Saulteau Don
That's so a user can apply datum transformations from one coordinate
system to another (ie, NAD27 - NAD83 - NAD83(CSRS)). They are
usually compiled into Proj4 through grid shift binary files (.gsb)
often available from federal or provincial and local agencies.

For example, in British Columbia, a lot of data comes in EPSG:26910
(UTM Zone 10N / NAD83) or EPSG:3005 (BC Albers / NAD83).

But converting either of those to EPSG:3153 (BC Albers / NAD83,CSRS)
which uses the Canadian Spatial Reference Standard/System requires a
custom transformation that can only be applied when using NTv2 grid
shift files. Or old NRCAN Atlas of Canada data can come in a Lambert
Conformal Conic projection in the NAD27 datum.

This is a long awaited feature and I'm very excited for it! This way I
don't have to drop back to command line to do my vector data
transformations.

total RMSE values returned range from 0.04 to around 0.2. My question is as
 follows

Where are the RMSE values measured from top-left, bottom-right, across the
diagonal of the pixel? I cant seem to find any explanation of where these
 values are calculated from.

Re: [Qgis-user] configuring OTB toolbox

2013-11-14 Per discussione Saulteau Don
I think for now, if you really need orfeo toolbox, I think Paolo C.
mentioned that the orfeo applications are still available in the 32bit
installer from OSGeo4W.

There are two 32 bit installers, the new one and the old one - I know
that the old 32 bit installer has orfeo but not sure if the new one
does =P

You might be able to see if that's an option with your IT. Using 32bit
OSGeo4W provides a single repo for a lot of apps to unlock tools in
the processing toolbox for QGIS.

Good luck!

Hey Johanna, I just got OTB working today.

Here's what I did, because I did notice that it isn't installed
through the Stand Alone QGIS installer or the 64bit OSGeo4W packager.

 Download both:
 (1) otb-bin and (2) otb-python tar.bz2 files from
 http://orfeo-toolbox.org/packages/nightly/latest
These are nightly builds, but the only place I've found with current
Windows files needed for processing toolbox. So you can come back and
get them everyday if you like =P

They both contain a tar file after you first extract them.
Extract the contents of those tar files (you should see folders like
apps, bin, etc) to your QGIS directory so they merge with your
existing apps, bin and etc folders.
If you installed with OSGeo4W, you simply drop them into the OSGeo4W
 folder, for example.

Now you should be able to simply activate the OTB tools in the
providers config window for the processing toolbox without having to
specify a path to the OTB libs and such. They should be found
 automatically.

 Hi Johanna,

If you are using the version 2.0 you just need to put the path for the OTB
files in the configuration menu. In my case, I'm using Linux version
(Ubuntu 12.04), put this paths in the configuration menu:

 OTB applications folder: /usr/lib/otb

OTB command line tools folder: /usr/lib

 Hi!

Just to be sure .. first of all you have to have the orfeo toolbox
 installed
 (http://orfeo-toolbox.org/otb/)

 Then within
Processing - Options and configuration - Providers - Orfeo Toolbox

You can set the OTB applications folder and the OTB command line tools
 folder

 Hope this will help

[Qgis-user] EPSG:3987 is recognized in QGIS 2.0.1 on Windows 8.1 but not Arch Linux

2013-11-05 Per discussione Saulteau Don
Evening list,

I've got some shapefiles that came without a .prj component but the
data source sent me confirmation of the proj details and I think I've
confirmed that the data was projected using EPSG:3978 (NAD83 / Canada
Atlas Lambert).

I've zipped them in my dropbox at https://db.tt/EO53JsUR

I applied that projection to a resultant shapefile and my data is now
lining up, but this is only on Windows 8.1 when QGIS is installed from
the osgeo4w 64-bit installer.

But opening the same shapefile on Arch Linux, QGIS 2.0.1 can't
recognize the projection and
instead gives it the wrong parameters and as:
USER:10 - * Generated CRS
(+proj=lcc +lat_1=49 +lat_0=49 +lon_0=-95 +k_0=1 +x_0=0 +y_0=0
+ellps=GRS80 +towgs84=0,0,0,0,0,0,0 +units=m +no_defs)
So it's not lining up to other data.

It should instead be:
(+proj=lcc +lat_1=49 +lat_2=77 +lat_0=49 +lon_0=-95 +x_0=0 +y_0=0
+ellps=GRS80 +towgs84=0,0,0,0,0,0,0 +units=m +no_defs)
which is EPSG:3978

What can I do on Arch Linux so that EPSG:3978 can be
recognized, it isn't in the projection list like it is on Windows...
Not sure if this is because of something lacking in the proj4 library
or is it a QGIS thing? Can it be compiled in by default like on
Windows?

Any help is appreciated, thanks =)

I haven't used qgis on opensuse for a while, but on the version I'm

Opening the plugin manager and choosing the Installed option on the left
 I
could see 'Processing listed with red text in the list of plugins. There
was also a category for Problems (or something like that - it is gone

because I applied a fix) where Processing was shown. In either case
highlighting Processing showed the message highlighted in yellow that
 this
 plugin required QSCI.

I shutdown QGIS and started up the YaST Software Manager. I searched for
QSCI. The search returned three (3) pythonscintilla packages and two
 (2)
libscintilla packages. I installed all packages EXCEPT libscintilla-devel
 (libqscintilla2-8, python-qscintilla, python-qscintilla-sip, and
 python3-qscintilla).

I restarted QGIS and got the same message telling me Processing could

Highlighting Processing showed the message that this plugin required

I shutdown QGIS and started up the YaST Software Manager. I searched for

 (4) packages (python-psycopg2, python-psycopg2-doc, python3-psycopg2, and
 python3-psycopg2-doc).

I restarted QGIS and no longer received a message regarding Processing.

The Processing menu item now shows up in the menu and I can activate the
Processing Toolbox which I assume is the QGIS 2 evolution of the
 SEXTANTE

Searching for the solution to this problem I see that it is a reported bug
 (Bug #8710 - cmake mises missing Qsci - http://hub.qgis.org/issues/8710)
 and
the last entry in the History list of this bug report, from Georg
Reutelsterz, mentions the install of the qscintilla package, but not the
installation of the psycopg2 package. It might be the difference between
openSUSE 12.3 and openSUSE 12.1 (the version Georg mentioned).

I hope this note helps other installers/users of QGIS 2 on platforms that
show the error for the the Processing plugin component installation.

 Hi there,

I've prepared a 64bit build of major parts of OSGeo4W.

My main focus was QGIS (1.8 and master), but it also has all of it's numerous

Qt, python, GDAL (including plugins for Oracle, ECW, MrSID and FileGDB

It looks like you could open a python terminal and then issue the commands:

 import sip
 sip.SIP_VERSION_STR
'4.15.1' #this is the output

What version of SIP are you running? On arch linux, it fails with
python2-sip v4.15.1 after sip was updated.

Bug reported.

On Tue, Aug 27, 2013 at 2:12 AM, Vincent Schut sc...@sarvision.nl wrote:
 Hi,

just to confirm this: the same happens to me (also on Arch). I tried
downgrading sip and python2-sip to 4.14, but that dit not work. Maybe
because QT/QScintilla is bound to a certain sip version? I did get a
error in ccmake about qscintilla and sip using different sip api's (10
vs 10.1 if I recall correctly). I don't feel like downgrading the
 entire QT stack...

 Should we file a bug?

 Best,
 Vincent.
