Re: [Qgis-user] Export map to graphics program

2012-03-10 Thread Richard Duivenvoorde

Hi Gerhardus,

(sorry for this late notice)

not all symbologies of new symbology are working. Easiest test is to
first try one layer at the time, to find out which one is not working.

Maybe it is possible to use a simpler symbology for that layer?

The idea of the simplesvg plugin is to keep groups of objects grouped by
layer and symbology class, thereby making it easier to do further
editing in Inkscape (or Illu$trator). (there are actually Inkscape
specific tags in the svg to give more info in layer manager of Inkscape).

If you find out what exactly was the problem, pls let me know. Maybe I
can fix it in further releases... (also, please check if you have the
latest version of the plugin. I added OnTheFly reprojection lately, and
fixed some bugs...)

Regards,

Richard Duivenvoorde

[Qgis-user] Pyramids and Virtual maps

2012-03-10 Thread Zirneklitis

Hi,

I have many raster maps (size 2000x2000 pixels). I have created a
virtual dataset including all of them.

The first question: what pyramids should be built?

1. Large scale pyramids (e.g. 2 and 8) for each raster map separately
and small scale pyramids (e.g. 16 and 32) for the Virtual data set.

OR

2. Full set of pyramids for the Virtual data set.

The second question: Is it reasonable to make only every second pyramid
(e.g. 4, 16, 64)? - performance/disk waste issue.

Thank You,
Karlis

[Qgis-user] Strange behaviour in new layer

2012-03-10 Thread Gerhardus Geldenhuis
Hi
I have created a new shapefile layer but whenever I draw polygons on it,
the polygons get "edited" as in they take on the shape of another layer in
the project that has my rivers in. I have added the shapefile layer above
and below the river layer which is also a shapefile layer and made the
river layer invisible but the behaviour stays. I have also restarted QGIS
but it has no effect. I have no idea why this layer is effecting all new
shapefile layers in this way.

[Qgis-user] Custom label placing

2012-03-10 Thread Gerhardus Geldenhuis
Hi
I have done custom label placing on a few of my layers but I am a bit
confused about how that relates to zoom level.

When you do custom label placing is that only relevant to one zoom level?
Could you have custom label placing per zoom level? The problem is that I
have very dense data in some places and need to move labels around to make
everything look good but that does not seem to relate well for multiple
zoom levels.

It seems like you used AsGml to get a geometry in GML format, but
that's not like a "GML layer" which you can load in QGIS.

You should be able to export your data into shapefiles and other
formats using ogr2ogr (gdal >= 1.8):
http://alastaira.wordpress.com/2011/09/29/exporting-spatial-data-from-sql-server-to-esri-shapefile/
But if gdal can read MS SQL server data, I think QGIS sholud be able
to load it as well.

I have no experience using MS server so I don't know about the details.

If you add a label x,y to your table and then use the label move tool as
part of the new labelling engine the values will be written to the
table. These values should stick for all zoom levels.

[Qgis-user] GPS route

Hi All,

I'm trying to create a .gpx route along a straight line, but with a node ~100m.
i.e. I have a transect and wish to survey every 100m. How can I split straight
polylines with a node every 100m, but keep the same line?

Obviously I can create points every 100m using the GRASS toolbox, but these are
then converted to a waypoint when saved as gpx. If I save the two node lines
then the GPS wont indicate when I've reached the next survey point...

Hi Jake,

If you are just new to QGIS, just use QGIS without Grass plug-in
first. Familiarize yourself with QGIS. Download and read QGIS manual.
You can always install the Grass plug-in later.

If you used ArcMap before and not ArcInfo, mostly like to you don't
need Grass at the moment. Most of QGIS users (including me) have a
little use of Grass until you want advance Geoprocessing which can not
do in QGIS.

BTW, sort of things you want to use QGIS for forestry application.

Michael,

What about a route? String 100m lines together in a route, You even can tell
the GPS when to notify you about the coming of a node which will be the
beginning of a new line. Because it's nearly impossible to hit a 1X1m square
with the GPS, (it will constantly move on you) I use this feature to let me
know when I'm let's say 10 m from the point and then use a fixed amount of
paces and the bearing to be fairly unbiased in locating the point.

To calculate area - (shapeflie file) in QGIS,

Have a look on the Vector (menu)->Geometry Tools -> Export / Add
geometry columns.

You will get a new shapefile with area and perimetre columns

Simple hack for acres;

Open dbf file of that shapefiles in LibreOffice / OpenOffice add a new
columns for arces and just just conversion from units to acres.

I think you can add column as well in the attributes table and add the
formula for conversion tor default unit to acres.

Re: aerial photos, you can use georeference plugin (C++ plugin -
standard /default installed by QGIS to georeference those photos. It
easy and simple to do georeferencing in QGIS compare to MapInfo and

I think if you wanted to have custom labels at different places for different
zoom levels you would need to make multiple copies of the layer, and have each

I think he was asking about zooming in on the whole composer layout, not
changing the scale of a map on the composer layout.
Personally I think it would be good to have most of the same zoom tools

wouldn't make sense in the composer). I thought there was a ticket for this,

QGIS will report areas in the native units of whatever CRS your layers are in -
typically meters or I guess feet. But why would it be a problem to convert
these to acres? It should be easy.

columns for arces and just just conversion from units to acres.

I think you can add column as well in the attributes table and add the
formula for conversion tor default unit to acres.

I try to delete some of the fields (columns) in the attribute table but the
delete feature is grayed out weather I toggle editing mode on or off.
How can I delete a field?

To calculate area - (shapeflie file) in QGIS,

Have a look on the Vector (menu)->Geometry Tools -> Export / Add geometry
columns.

You will get a new shapefile with area and perimetre columns

Simple hack for acres;

Open dbf file of that shapefiles in LibreOffice / OpenOffice add a new
columns for arces and just just conversion from units to acres.

I think you can add column as well in the attributes table and add the
formula for conversion tor default unit to acres.

I found it and there is even a forestry toolkit. Did you use it? Is it any

Use Table Manager (Qgis python plugin) to manage table (i.e. delete and add
columns). At the moment, it will save the new table into a new shapefile
(*.shp, *.dbf, etc).

Is it a third party plugin or where do I find it?

Yes, it is best to use the attribute table instead of messing around with
Openoffice.
And at least in QGIS master you can skip the "Export / Add geometry" step -
just open the attribute table and you can use the field calculator to calculate
the area and convert it into acres in one step.

Deleting a feature is not the same as deleting a field, and requires a feature

Deleting a field from the attribute table window is I think only possible with
