[Qgis-user] How to create a website to display a QGIS project

2018-08-29 Thread Pascale Le Hel
Hello,
I have never used QGIS so far, but I am wondering if I can use it to then
create a webGIS (exporting the layers created in QGIS to display them on a web
platform).
I saw this plugin 'QGIS2web': does it create a web GIS to display the data
online or do I need to use a (free) website builders like Wix to create a
WebGIS?
Many thanks for your response!

Hi Pascale,

You will need some kind of hosting, yes. Depending on your needs you may not
need a website, you could try a platform like QGIS Cloud?

https://qgiscloud.com/ (free for non-commerial/non-governmental use, up to
50mb).

Or you could try hosting on github?

Couple of ideas for you, have a google.

I just did my first WebGIS page with qgis2web. You can visit it at
http://karte.nrwbahnarchiv.bplaced.net/

I used the Openlayers build, because it has some better symbolizing than
the leaflet one. I added some features like URL parameters and WMS
basemaps (instead of WMS layers) myself. The vector layer data is stored
as geojson files.

You surely need a web hoster (I use a free account at bplaced), but no
online database or server management is required. An ftp access is the
only thing you need.

You can even add your own tiles if you render them on your PC and uplaod
them to the usual folder structure on your webspace.

[Qgis-user] Beginner pointers on how best to access specific web based GIS dataset

2018-08-29 Thread Joe Harroun
Using QGIS 3.22 on windows 10

Data of interest located generally at :

If click on the specific county of interest, say Fulton County IL, the link
accessing the data is:
https://fultonco.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=79f2fd5b27c94cce966ca9a02e0a16ee

So this appears to be an ArcGIS server, but I'm struggling to give QGIS the

Despite the problem with map area issue on mac, there is a new problem in 3.2.2
that neither it’s present on 3.2. The identify features option does not work
correctly. If you click on any object on the map (with the layer selected)
nothing appears on the identify panel. Only if you open the contextual menu
(right click) you can get the info. I have seen this behavior on OS X 10.11.6

Hi Joe,
You need the link or web address for the WMS or WFS you are trying to access,
all the links on the website you sent, is just a viewer.
For example, we have a Web Map viewer at

https://www.floodinfo.ie/map/floodplans/

We do provide WMS, at a different address, most of these will end on wms? Or
wfs? Depending on the service you are looking for
You will have to contact helpd...@sidwellco.com
and see do they have WMS or WFS links to the data you require.
Hope this helps

Richard.

For the qgis2web plugin, you need no programming skills, just try it out.

If you want to have the output modified, you can ask here or at

Hi,

You will find that QGIS is an excellent product  that can be used in a
professional environment.  It is stable.  I do not know XMap 7 pro
therefore I could not help you to see if this is a good replacement.  It
would help to know exactly what you do with XMap 7 pro.

Importing projects will probably be impossible or would need some
competent programmer.  This will probably be the same for all GIS
software.  What you will be able to import is the raster files and
vector files into a new QGIS project.  QGIS can handle most formats.
You can look at this https://www.gdal.org/formats_list.html  and
https://www.gdal.org/ogr_formats.html for more information on the
various formats.

Do you know Tony Cooley?
http://www.datadirections.biz/XMap8_Review_SAF_Forestry_Source_June_2013.pdf

I don't either, but you may want to contact
him to get his opinion.

QGIS is free, so that is a positive.  It is also
very, very powerful.  It has a very fast development
cycle, which will be both good and bad for you
in different ways.  It can be self-taught, but
you may not have the time for that.  If not,
you should check into training options before you
decide.

If your users need very basic GIS functions and nothing
more, it might be better to use a simpler software, like
those supplied by Delorme or others, instead of teaching
everybody QGIS.

2018-08-29 Thread Randal Hale
I do some consulting work for another forestry company - maybe I can add
more info to the good info you've gotten.

 * I doubt that QGIS will be able to pull in your Xmap projects. If you
can export your data as txt files you can pull that info into QGIS.
 * The group I work with was using DNR GPS to push and pull data from
their GPS Units. With the newer Garmin units you can copy a GPX file
to the unit (like a USB drive). I replaced DNR GPS with QGIS (we
just create a GPX file and copy it).
 * We generate all the Plots and digitize the stand information using
QGIS - when I started working with them, they were a arcivew shop.
QGIS would do everything and more than Arcview. Plus it saved them
licensing costs over the long haul.
 * I ended up adding PostGIS into the mix - but that's a longer story
   for another time.

It's doable - it will be a learning curve (and some head scratching) but
you'll be pretty happy with QGIS I think.

Re: [Qgis-user] looking for mapping program

2018-08-29 Thread Stefan Giese (WhereGroup)

Hi Diane,
some thoughts to your question: QGIS would be a very good choice (or the
best!) and will be a substainable GIS for your company. You are writing
that there is only a txt export option? A quick view on the user guide
(http://static.garmin.com/pumac/XMap7Manual.pdf) shows, that xmap works
(can work) with databases and has a bulk export option, at least it can
export kml. So first, the migration process will depend on how your data
infrastrucure is organized. In general a migration process from one GIS
into an other can be a lot of work. as many GIS systems xmap distinguish
between projects (how your data is organized and displayed in the map)
and the spatial data itself. I suppose the export of the projects will
not be possible, whereas the data should not be that problem. May be it
will be worth to use the help from a GIS professional to manage the
migration process. This depends on your workflows and as described
before from the infrastructure of your data.

best regards
stefan
