Just (re)opening the project should work. You can easily test it locally.

I would like the decision makers to see directly what happens to the
geographical spread if they refuse proposal 10 to 21 (for instance based on
quality of the proposal). Because geographical spread is one of the criteria
and this is best visualized with a map (instead of a list of municipality
names), they can argue and reconsider choices. That's my need for 'real-time'.
Combined with the wish to make changes in just one document (xlsx being the
easiest) in stead of two (both xlsx and qgis), I am looking for solution.

To be honest, opening the attribute table and edit some cells manually
in an edit session is not too complicated imho.

I have to look into the Statistics panel. Will that provide cumulations of a
certain column based on a selection of fields (all the selected proposals)? And
what is used to create that selection? Does it refresh automatically?

Yes, you choose the layer and column and it shows all statistics. It can
also show the statistics for the selected features only.

Hi Jeroen,

If I understand you correctly, you just want to color entire municipalities
based on information in one or few columns? And the challenge is cooperating
with others, who don't know QGIS?

You could use a shared drive, like dropbox, to store 3 files:
1 table (xlsx or csv)
1 geo layer with municipalities (gpkg or shp)
1 qgis project, with the table joined to the layer, and with the desired style

Others can update the table, and you (and others) can open the project and see
the updated map in qgis.

Would that work?

Hello,

I am thinking about using qgis as a real-time decision support
tool and I am looking for some good ideas to ease the process.

The case is the following:

I have proposals from 60 municipalities (out of a possible few
hundred), each has 1 proposal. There is only room for 20
proposals to be accepted. One of the criteria will be the
geographical spread of the proposals: it is preferred to have 20
proposals sort of evenly spread over the entire country, instead
of having the majority of them coming from one region.

My idea is to show these proposals on a map by colouring the
municipalities. As a decision support tool I need the ability to
adjust the selection in real-time (during the discussion). The
easy way is to just edit the attribute table or to select or
deselect specific municipalities. This however requires myself
to be present and make changes in qgis as the discussion goes
(given that nobody else in the decision group knows how to work
with qgis).

An alternative is to produce a webmap and have each municipality
with a proposal have it’s own specific attribute value (but all
using the same colour in categorized style), so they all show up
in the map-legend, and any group member can easily select or
deselect a specific municipality from the legend.

Do you have other ideas how to use a map as a real-time decision
support tool?

Quality of the proposal is the main criterium, but in addition
to the geographical spread there are others as well, such as
variety in projects and the cumulative budget for the selected
proposals (the cumulative budget is capped). Since I am not well
known with database and calculation options in qgis an

Hi Frank, it is really easy if you know what to do.

In your Print Composer

1. Add a Map:
   2. Set rotation to anything <> 0

3. Add an Image:
   4. Open "search directories" and pick a pre installed north arrow
   5. Check "Sync with map" for "Image rotation"

Good luck!

I think it is not worth the effort to ask for that.
The devs had plenty of time to add a specific north arrow tool, but obviously
had no great interest in it.
The map canvas and the composer window are completely different things, so
there is no automatism to have the same features within both.
And actually it is quite clever to use the same tool for adding north arrows or
any other image with one button ... it's just about telling the users where to
look for.

But when I'm just viewing them in my map they are available under

app.

Re: [Qgis-user] Interpolated water depths overlap poorly with underlying sample points

2018-01-08 Thread Raymond Nijssen

Hi Tad,

I'd say you should save your data in a local projection first. Then you
can use meters as units which will make more sense than 0.1
degrees or whatever.

I tried 10 meters in epsg:3857 and it worked out well.

Good luck,
Raymond

On 08-01-18 18:26, Tad Deshler wrote:
I have created a vector layer from a spreadsheet that contains water
depths and x-y coordinates in latitude and longitude (276 points in all,
see attached). I've used the Interpolation plugin to create a TIN of
water depths, but the interpolation doesn't cover the same region as the
underlying points (see attached graphic). The results I do get seem
accurate (deeper red points are at southern edge of grid), but are only
partially what I need.

After specifying the interpolation attribute (Depth), the output section
of the interpolation plugin displays the default number of columns and
rows (300 for each). The Cellsize X is specified as 0.1 (I think
because my longitude data is to five decimal places). So I left number
of columns and Cellsize X as 300 and 0.1, respectively. The number
of rows is also specified as 300, but the Cellsize Y was initially
specified as 0.0, which not surprisingly yielded nothing for the
interpolation. So next time, I changed the Cellsize Y value to 0.1
to match Cellsize X. This automatically changed the number of rows to
139. Could this be because the spread of my data is from 61.1201 to
61.1215 degrees North, which would be 140 times 0.1?

I'm using QGIS 2.18.11. I am confused about why the interpolation
doesn't cover all the sample points. I have tried changing the values
for X and Y min and max (making them larger than the actual data range),
but this only serves to place the interpolated result OUTSIDE the sample
points, so I don't think that is the solution either.

Can anybody provide some guidance on where I'm going wrong here?

[Qgis-user] QGIS video "commercial"?

2017-06-30 Thread Raymond Nijssen
I'm looking for a short commercial type of video that shows what QGIS is
and in what ways it can be useful to organizations. Explaining to non
GIS people.

Anyone aware of such a video?

Re: [Qgis-user] Raster Extent After Clipping

The GDAL "Clip raster by mask layer" tool has the option:

Crop the extent of the target dataset to the extent of the cutline

Good luck,
Raymond

BTW Feel free to bother us ;)

I have clipped a raster to a .shp file successfully but can not get the

Any suggestions to what I am doing wrong would be greatly appreciated.

Again I apologize for bothering the list with this foolish question.

Re: [Qgis-user] How to reproject maps of world grasslands

2017-03-19 Thread Raymond Nijssen

Hi Martin,

Sorry, I cannot really help you.

Your data seems to be in the (quite odd for distributing data) projection:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goode_homolosine_projection

And it is not recognized by qgis.

Proj4 seems to know it though:
http://proj4.org/projections/igh.html

And I found this:
http://gis.stackexchange.com/questions/17263/is-it-possible-to-use-the-goode-homolosine-projection-in-qgis

Hope it helps (a bit),
Raymond

["False_Northing",0.0],PARAMETER["Central_Meridian",0.0],PARAMETER
["Option",1.0],UNIT["Meter",1.0]]

The map does not include the outline countries of the world and
therefore I would like to add these (perhaps the NaturalEarth 110
million scale country shape file, which is in WGS84).

However, I cannot figure out how to align the grassland layer and the
110 million NaturalEarth layer. As I understand it, I should use Save As
to reproject the grassland shape file with a new CRS (perhaps Mercator).
With Enable on the fly CRS transformation enabled I should then be able
to put the two shape files together - but I am darned if I can obtain
anything sensible: I cannot get the two layers to align in any way.

With grateful thanks for any help, Martin

Re: [Qgis-user] Processing - Duplicate tools for reprojecting

2017-03-17 Thread Raymond Nijssen
Many processing tools are duplicates. For example, If I filter for
"buffer" I find 13 results in QGIS, GDAL, SAGA and GRASS libraries.

Since these last 3 are external projects, QGIS cannot control which
tools are in there. And why should "somebody at QGIS" choose for you and
everybody else which tools to use or not.

Besides, I'm often happy having a backup tool when the first one I try
doesn't like my data for some reason.

So go ahead, pick the one you prefer and use it.

By changing nodata to 0, I'm hoping to calculate:

Any ideas on this?

Re: [Qgis-user] How to edit repetitive data in QGIS

2016-12-14 Thread Raymond Nijssen

Hi Charlotte,

You can use the "dissolve" tool for merging features that have value(s)
in common. In this case the field "name" contains that value.

Go:
Vector >> Geoprocessing tools >> Dissolve...
Remove the check mark at "Dissolve all (do not use field)"
Add the field "name" to unique ID fields list
Run

This worked for me. Only drawback is that all roads without a name were
merged together. If you mind that, you can select and remove them before
running the dissolve algorithm.

Good luck,
Raymond

I got the steeets I need, no problem. But, I also got the

I am looking for a way to solve this issue, such as editing

editing a data file, is there some other way to do it?

You can do it but it is a fairly new feature. I think introduced in 2.12.

In the attribute table window on the top right corner is a button with
coloured blocks which opens the 'conditional format rules' panel. I
think you will find your way from there.

Does not (yet) seem to work in the print composer though...

But I don't want everything to become oblique; text labels, arrows etc.
should stay "normal" and floating in the air above the map, so only the map
should be oblique.

Also is it possible to have diagrams that "point from the sky" to the
location on the oblique map instead of also becoming oblique?

As far as I can see it is not possible to do what you want with the default

Hi Joris,

Not sure if I understand your question, but if you want to do a distance
calculation for all points in a point layer to a certain location you can use
the field calculator in the attribute table window.

The expression should be:

distance($geometry ,geomFromWKT( 'POINT(0 0)' ))

to calculate all distances to coordinate 0,0.

Hope this helps you.

2015-01-02 Thread Raymond Nijssen
Having had two great hackfests in Essen I would suggest that is the
place to name the next QGIS release after.

I don't have any old map of Essen, but maybe some (German) community
members could provide it. Or some people here will help us:

https://www.essen.de/rathaus/aemter/ordner_62/KartenHistorische.de.html

Could possibly conflict with:

CALL for QGIS RELEASE NAME SUGGESTIONS

The following rules apply:
- The suggestion should be the name of a place.
- The suggestion must not be the name of a software product. (Please
try to do some Google searches before submitting the suggestion.)
- Each suggestion must come with a suitable map image for splash
design. (Make sure that we have the rights to use the image. Since the
splash is also printed in our user guide, a minimum resolution of
3000x2000 px is necessary.)
- Locations of developer meetings have priority.

Submission format: Send an email with a short description of your
suggestion and a link to a ZIP file containing the map image(s) to
anitagra...@gmx.at

The PSC will pick the release names. The deadline for the 2.8 release
is the 1st of January 2015. If there are multiple good suggestions, we
might announce names for later releases as well.

Hi Jake,

I had a plugin in preparation that amongst others does exactly what you
want: within an editing session cut out from polygons in editable theme with
selected polygons from another theme.
The plugin is called DigitizingTools and is planned to contain more tools in
the future. I uploaded it to the plugin repository just now, feel free to
give it a try and report any problems.
It is marked as experimental (because it is not well tested right now) and
only works with current master (aka QGIS 2).

Here's how I typically add a cut to an existing stand (or depending on

1. Select all of your clearcuts in the stand.
2. IN the QGIS menu go to Vector -> geoprocessing -> difference 3.
Both the input and the difference layer will be the name of your
shapefile with the stand in it.
4. Uncheck "Use only selected features" under Input Vector Layer 5.
Make sure "Use only selected features" is checked under difference
layer 6. Create an output shapefile and run.

You should have a new stand with multiple "holes" cut into it so you
get the right acreage.

Re: [Qgis-user] Colouring lines

2013-03-22 Thread Raymond Nijssen

Hi Brett,

Yes you show them in different colours using a 'categorized' style.

However, you cannot save these colours in the shapefile since the format
does not support styling. But you have a few options:

1. Save your QGIS project, including the coloured layer, as a project
file (*.qgs)

2. Save your layer style as a QGIS map layer file (*.qml)

And hopefully soon in a new version of QGIS (check:
http://hub.qgis.org/issues/859):

3. Add an extra field to your shapefile in which you store the rgb
colour codes and create a data defined colour style on it.

Good luck,
Raymond

[Qgis-user] Drawing ellipses

2012-09-03 Thread Raymond Nijssen
For a research project I need to draw ellipses on top of a polygon map
based on a width and height field in my table. I was really happy to
find out that QGIS has this functionality. Unfortunately I don't get it
to work.

I managed to draw the polygons and draw ellipses on top of them, using
two rules (rule based symbology). I use the "centroid fill" with an
"ellipse marker". The marker initially has a fixed size (4x3) but I like
to set these by two fields in the "data defined settings" tab. I can
choose the fields, but their values do not overrule the 4x3 standard
settings.

Can anybody verify this behaviour or tell me what I'm doing wrong?
