[Qgis-user] Mobile GIS?
I also needed a way to easily access QGIS from my mobile, an iPhone in my case. A nice solution turned out to be the free version if iGIS, which I believe is also available for Android devices. If only a one-way communication is needed, then almost any decent GPS application will work. Most produce exportable GPX files. The nice thing about iGIS is that it imports and exports points in shapefile format, which can also be edited in QGIS and sent back to the mobile device. Currently, QGIS is reading several point shapefile files located in my Dropbox folder, which is automatically updated in the iPhone Dropbox folder. Since iGIS imports directly zipped files from Dropbox, the communication is as seamless as it is going to get - without a QGIS mobile app. best, Jan ___ Qgis-user mailing list Qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org List info: http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user Unsubscribe: http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user

Hi John, If you have a Windows tablet you can use QGIS as is. The user interface of IntraMaps Roam (http://roam-docs.readthedocs.org/en/latest/), which is based on QGIS, is a bit more mobile friendly... On Android you may want to have a look at QField (also based on QGIS, http://www.opengis.ch/android-gis/qfield/) I once wrote down some experiences which I can send you off list... Hi, There is an android version that is partially working (no python support last time I used it). Unless I am mistaken, I do not think qgis will be compatible with Windows tablets or phones as they are not x86 based cpus. You could use other free apt to pickup the data an import it to QGIS. RE: [Qgis-user] Mobile GIS - gvSIG Mini for Android 0.2.0 released
Hi Paolo, we are using external services. We use open OSM based services for routing (YOURS [1] and namefinder [2]). We also have detected that sometimes they are not available. YOURS is seldom out of service, but namefinder usually (not always) works fine. We depend on those services. We were thinking about adding another routing service (ORS - OpenRouteService [3]), and to have it as a primary service, having YOURS as a backup. It will be likely be done in a further version. If somebody knows any open service more reliable or valuable, please let us know, and we will study it to see if it can be included in gvSIG Mini. Regarding crashes, I cannot say what's happened. We've tested it thoroughly, on different devices and different Android versions (1.5, 1.6, 2.0, 2.1). It would be useful for us if you could send us a copy of a log file (they're placed in gvsiglogs folder at a root level of your SD Card), so that we can look into it and fix the problem ASAP, as well as saying us the device model and Android version. Thank you for your feedback. RE: [Qgis-user] Mobile GIS - gvSIG Mini for Android 0.2.0 released
Hello, I couldn't send any file with source code because we were moving repositories and fixing deployment bugs that avoided a right installation. We have just released the stable version of gvSIG Mini 0.2.0 for Android. At [1] you can find the announcement with main and new features. At [2] you have the binaries for installation and the access to the subversion repository. It's also available at Android Market. >From now on, apart from looking at the source code, Noli, Philipp, Zora and others, is anyone interested in working together for having vector support and so on? I mean to work on a common project, not just copy&paste source code and work in parallel doing the same. Any type of feedback will be of high value for us. Recently Ive bought my first Android smartphone with GPS integrated and in consequence there came up the wish to display my forest map in GoogleMaps (with the satellite image as background) and the ability to mark points or areas by GPS and upload them into the GIS. So I typed 'gis' and 'map' and similar terms into Android Market (=AppStore in the Android world) and found nothing useful except apps for geocaching, hiking, mountainbiking and the like, but nothing that would fit my needs. As a consequence I started experimenting with the Android SDK and found out that it is not too much work to use the MapView shipping with the SDK to display stuff on top of the google satellite image. With the help of JTS (a java library for geo stuff, http://www.vividsolutions.com/jts/jtshome.htm) it was less than 100 lines of code to display polygon layers as overlay into the MapView. Most of the work was to get initially familiar with Android SDK and its philosophy, and with its integration to eclipse it seems quite handy to me. The next Problem is how to get my maps from Qgis/Postgis to my phone, there I decided for an online solution with MapServer as backend. QGis has MapServerExport as plugin, so its no big deal to export a QGIS project to MapServer. Then I wrote an xmlrpc server (around 150 lines of python code including coordinate transformation) which deploys the layer features in the WKT format, that I parse on my handheld with the help of JTS library and the module mentioned above displays it on my MapView. I also wrote some code to capture coordinates (points and areas) with GPS and are currently working on uploading them into the GIS server. My software can even mark remote points using the handheld's camera and the device's internal compass for the direction. I then just have to manually enter the distance read from a laser distance meter and have my point location. All that is by far not production ready but serves for me as a proof of concept that I can display my map online from my server on my android phone and be able to digitize features with GPS. Re: [Qgis-user] Mobile GIS
Hi Miguel, Thank you for informing about the android mapviewer. I hope that in the near future it would be capable to be mobile gis as Phillip described - Android Mobile GIS. Ubuntu tablets are coming as well. http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/19/sharps-netwalker-pc-t1-is-the-very-definition-of-an-mid-coming/ I think QGIS can easily run on these devices as well. But I refer to have an Android Mobile GIS app in android since most of the these devices has built-in GPS. Hallo How about Maemo/Meegoo has anyone tried compiling QGIS on Nokia 900. One impotant thing to think about when discussing Mobile GIS is whatdisplay technique is used on different devices. We have tryied to runArcPad on devices with capasitive displayes and that is good forlooking at data, but you can never digitize on the screen. Then youwill need a resisitive screen and a stylus. I don't know about Androiddevices but many windows devices are now using the capasitive techniquebecause it is smoother when just looking in your calender and so on. Ithink tkis makes Nokia 900 with Maemo 5 very interesting because it hasa resistive touchscreen among many other features. I think the hardwarelso supports multi touch. Re: [Qgis-user] Mobile GIS
Yes, I really agree that a Lite version would be great. How big screen is needed I think is mostly depending on what you are going to do and if the computor is the only tool you are carrying or it it is desirable to instead always have it in the pocket. >From using Arcpad I think that the functionality of importance is * easy map pan and zoom with one hand * Digitizing where both stylus and gps can be used. The GPS both for tracking and single vertexpoints. *Support for SpatialLite, shapefiles, wms, wfs, and wfs-t would be great. I think it is important to early get a picture about what functionality should be there because every unnecessary functionality will be more of irritation, both because the user interface will be messed up, and because the system resources will go to things you don't want. Of course some easy customization is great, but to keep it down all over I think is prio one. I really hope for QGIS here. I guess (am I right?) that QGIS gives better possibilities to build a real slimmed application than the java-alternatives. Re: [Qgis-user] Mobile GIS
Meego is another candidate platform for mobile gis. Asus T91mt and T101mt have resistive touch screens. The mt stands for multi touch. These two devices will run Meego as well. We have to wait unitl, end of May to see the real "Meego 1.0" with Maemo 6 i.e. Marmattan UI framework. Right now, nothing is showing up about UI in meego dev mailinglist. In my opinion 3.5 screen of N900 is not probably quite good for gis editing but will do. But I really think that qgis should develop a qgis lite version for the tablets and mobile phones. Thanx all I installed gvSIG Mobile (the download with PhoneME Virtual Machine included) and it seem to run OK, found some satellites and could load simple shape files. JPG, TIFs etc didnt load, looks like one have to export them from gvSIG desktop to gvSIG Mobile, will try that. No Perl on the Ipaq (to my knowledge). Will synchronise clocks (lol) and try to use the gps tracklog for the tagging on the desktop. And then have a go with Peter Ersts exif data provider. Re: [Qgis-user] mobile gis and geotag on pocketpc?
Hi, Regarding the photo-tagging, there is http://www.carto.net/projects/photoTools/gpsPhoto/ - based on perl. I don't know if your IPaq has Perl? It is a command-line application but easy to use. You'll need a GPX file and synchronized clocks (or you'd need to know the time-offset). So far I only used it for post-processing. Combined with the PIL package for python you should be able to make a simple geotag app. I don't know of one out of the box. You can get all my code from http://www.siafoo.net/library/23 It's sounds like you just need a GPS logger and will tag the photos back on the desktop. If that's the case there are lots of applications for that like digikam. Alex ___ Qgis-user mailing list Qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user
[Qgis-user] mobile gis and geotag on pocketpc?
Hi, I'm wondering if there are any open source mobile GIS available for pocketpc. I'm running a HP Ipaq hw6515 with windows mobile 2003, and for now I use ESRI Arcpad, but I would like to replace it with some open software. I have found a homepage on GRASS GIS on Handhelds http://grass.itc.it/platforms/grasshandheld.html but the info looks to be 5 years old so I wonder if there are any more recent developments. Also, does any one know if this old Mobile GRASS combined with familiar Linux would run on a hw6515? Apart from an arcpad replacement I'm looking for some open source geotag app to run on the Ipaq. The idea is to collect gps positions on the Ipaq, to tag photos taken by my digital camera (Nikon). thanx / Fafner -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/mobile-gis-and-geotag-on-pocketpc--tp2666829p2666829.html Sent from the qgis-user mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Qgis-user mailing list Qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user
