I've personally been hanging around this "Email" only version for ten years or
so. I am a member of a couple non QL related Forums via Web or Tapatalk. If the
QL forum was on Tapatalk I would add it although I don't this Tapatalk has Chat
facility.

The main reason I spend more time on the QL Forum is because it allows members
to share photos, code, and large files in a way that this list doesn't - yet...
I've not been able to attach anything but the smallest photos to the list and
even then, most times the attachments get stripped off. I'm not nocking the
list - just some of the policies come from a time of dial-up and maybe a 500K
or 1MB attachment limit might be more in line with members' slower internet
speeds.

Also, the chat on QL Forum is *great* - it has provided a real sense of
community, and it's fun to see the personalities and senses of humour of the
various people I've known for many years through the formality of email.

Just enough money in Quanta to go out with a big bang and not a slightly
pathetic phut!

How about, invite all the Quanta members to a last hurrah, a weekend of
celebrating the QL reaching 30, an achievement in itself seeing as it died a
death twenty seven years ago at retail. Enjoy your show, celebrate the QL's
30th because as I see it, fast forward a few short years and the pot will
naturally be almost empty and that'll be that, lights out.

So, £3000 should cover the basics for the party.

What's left in the pot, throw it at that last QL 'pacemaker', one which draws
in interest from outside, a QL on a board, retrofitted into a QL case, able to
run at QL speed, GC speed, SGC speed up to super speeds, use Kickstarter or
whatever to raise cash. Just do it, what have you got to loose, well, apart
from a slow lingering death for the QL that is.

Anyhow, clearly you shouldn't make me treasurer !!

Why don't you arrange a courier yourself to pick the item off from the guys
address. All he needs to do is box it up and stick the label on it. If he
hasn't a printer,
Print the label yourself and post it too him, arranging the courier at a
sensible date of course, you want the label to arrive beforehand ;)

I use parcel2go ,

Id avoid selecting YODEL as the courier though!

Does anyone want to collect an ICL One Per Desk Computer, complete with colour

Bedfordshire ?

If so, PM me - BUT it needs collecting before the end of the week!

Unfortunately, it is not worth my mileage to see what there is and he won't
send it by courier - I am interested in some of the items though!

I wonder if it's possible to install the Pi within a usb Keyboard, neatly done

I suppose a slightly less slimline keyboard would be required.

Hi everyone,

Just a quick update on my progress.

In the last couple of days, I worked mainly at improving the 3D engine; line
clipping, object visibility, object creation and removal, simple hidden line
removal etc. All this unfortunately takes time to compute, so at the end of the
day, the fps score was not as good as it was.

To compensate, I redefined the 3D object definition in order to reduced the
number of 3D transformations to compute its position on screen and I wrote a
greatly improved routine to erase the screen between each frame.

Finally I wrote a very simple control interface and defined the first "stage"
of the game. This stage will be called "The Ice Field" where you are in control
of a ship that navigate in a comet tail. You need to doge the ice crystals and
collect some rare Iridium cube lying around.

I just played for a few minutes and it is fun ! Some parameters need to be
adjusted to improve playability and set the difficulty level right.

The game will have the following stages:

The ice field
The power station
The mothership

and one or two still undefined stages.

What left to be done: a lot... Firing, object explosion, scores, better
steering, collision detection, introduction story and graphics, testing, lots
of testing.

BTW I lots the whole weekend trying to solve a very strange bug... At the end,
it was a error in an assembly function; ADDA.L instead of ADDA.W...

It's an APP for the Iphone/ipod/ipad and probably Android devices that lets you

I use it extensively as I'm a forum mod for OldnRubbish (a gaming site for Old

Formed in 2007 so it's mearly a child as a community, same rules apply, we

Sadly, this is off topic for the QL, but you did ask ;)

Re: [Ql-Users] Nascent project: Cross-platform SuperBASIC derivative.

2012-02-23 Thread Neil Riley
I used to Dabble a little using Dark Basic Professional, a rather nice Gui
front end Basic mainly aimed at writing 'games'.
A couple of my friends teenage boys enjoyed messing with it as it was very easy
to code and results came quickly.

This is worth a read for those interested.

Subject: [Ql-Users] Nascent project: Cross-platform SuperBASIC derivative.

The Raspberry Pi project and my work at Oxford University supporting a science
department has had me thinking for some time about the need for a modern
equivalent to the old home computer systems and the BASIC language which came
on them.

On the home computer front, as shown in the second episode of the BBC's
"Electric Dreams", teenage boys are still enthused by being able to program, as
long as within 15 minutes they can start annoying their family with sounds and
putting their name on the screen in gaudy colours. Plotting things on the
screen simply is also important. The energy barrier must not be very high.

On the scientific front, there are many people who need to do some programming
but find the energy barrier for learning traditional programming languages (and
even Matlab) too steep. They need a simple language with which to process data
and plot their data in a publishable quality format.

To this end, I see SuperBASIC as a very good starting point, which needs to be
extended with modern data structures such as compound variables and proper
variable scoping.

I've been thinking about this quite hard in the last few days and have written
up my initial thoughts on my blog:

http://www.lingula.org.uk/wordpress/2012/02/23/notsobasic/

Any comments and possible help appreciated. ;-)

[Ql-Users] Raspberry Pi the £20 PC

2011-08-03 Thread Neil Riley
In the latest issue of gamesTM, page 20, there is an article on the
Raspberry Pi which is basically a £20 pc.
This device is the size of a USB memory stick, has a USB port one end
an a HDMI the other. The provisional specs are
decent enough, a 700Mhz ARM11 , 256MB SDRAM, OpenGL ES 2.0, 1080p30
H.264 high profile decoder,
Composite and HDMI video output, USB 2.0, SD/MMC/SDIO memory card slot.
It comes with a simple Linux
based Operating system. Developed by David Braben (!) and Dr Eben

That is the manual, the difference is in the quality of the copy. The copy on

It would appear that the photocopier in work does rather more
than just photocopy! it has the option to email as .pdf's also!!

Four .pdf's should be sitting in your email inbox, did a quick trial run to

Fingers crossed.

I suspect It's a photo copy although a decent one and it does appear to be on
off white paper. Picture emailed to your rwap email address.

The front cover is official but it does
say
   SUPERFORTH
   +
 REVERSI

A COMPLETE FORTH-83 SYSTEM FOR THE QL

plus the 4Digital Precision logo... By Gerry Jackson. Puplished by Freddy
Vachha

There are 14 sections in the Index where 12 is the reference to Reversi.

It is printed on off white (blue!) paper but It is very subtle.
There is reference to Version 2.0.

Anyhow, It looks like it would photocopy, Id happily send you the newer
copy and I'd keep the Photocopy for myself.

As this is the proper v2.0 manual - if you are willing to let me keep it

scan it in (anyone fancy typing it in?)

Re: [Ql-Users] Game idea...

2011-02-09 Thread Neil Riley
The lack of games on QL was always a source of much frustration, Whilst the QL
quickly became a
hobbyists dream with Languages and disk drives etc, I just wanted Bandersnatch
or whatever that
mythical IMAGINE secret game was.

One of the first games I played on PC was the traditional Start Trek type game
on a Tandy TRS 80
or was it a Commodore Pet, either way, I always enjoyed that type of game,
especially a DRAGON32
version that was excellent.

I really loved Catacombs on ZX81, it was pig slow but it was one of the first
D&D themed games.

My Favorite game though was Adventure on the ATARI VCS2600, utter class and all
running in 4k memory!!

Now, that must be possible on the QL!

The odd thing is that only the main 4 Psion packages ever made allowance
for the difference in the AT command - presumably no-one else ever
raised this with an issue with software producers, as all the machines
were returned to Sinclair.

Turbo and Q-liberator would have fun compiling the AT command if it was
written on the FB ROM !

Morning Rich

Just a quick note.

Whilst putting the carts away over the weekend (cheers again for returning )
I opened my QL Bounder case and lo and behold, I have the carts so the reason
you couldn't find the QL Bounder microdrives is simple, you never had them.

However, it appears that you have my QL DEFUSION carts as that case is
empty!

So mystery solved.

Cheers

I like the idea of a Tower defence type game. Plants vs Zombies, h, not
sure the QL can quite
manage PS3 level graphics and I'm not sure the 68000 series can keep up with
the CELL processor but
looking on the bright side, Halo has been ported over to the VCS2600 ( I kid
you not!) and that has a
cut down 6502 CPU on board!

That looks quite dangerous actually. No lights or mirrors so what use is it on
the road,
shame the Video didn't show the poor driver trying to change from one lane into

or perhaps that bit was edited out, including the Ambulance ride to A&E.

Now, the folding bike looks better but I'm guessing it'd take just the one
decent sized pot

[Ql-Users] USB 3G Dongle Broadband Wireless Routers

2010-09-06 Thread Neil Riley
Slightly off topic but Im was so happy with this little device I had to
mention it.

If anyone is after a wireless router for their USB 3G broadband dongle,
as I was, I recommend
LM Technologies LM009. It's an 'N' spec router and tiny at only 10cm
long. Being N rated, the
range from it's internal Antennae is excellent. I'm using it in work as
works broadband is very restricted.

By some miracle, I was able to pick up a brand new one for under £15
including shipping fees from an
Amazon third party seller but it normally retails around the £35 - £45
mark.

bad news: these go for over a grand.

good news: they still have a number of refurbished CUB monitors. i got

Re: [Ql-Users] Missing Sinclair QL Software Titles

2010-03-15 Thread Neil Riley
Sounds like a tough job Rich, I guess finding some of the programs
will be an almost impossible task. Even if they are still in the wild, they're
likely to be hidden away in a loft somewhere, the cold won't do those
microdrives and favours. I store my Microdrives in my lounge
under the settee out of sight. At least it's reasonably warm there.

I've got plenty of 'stuff' which no longer loads so I hope you are successful
in your quest ( sounds a bit Hollywood but you get my drift ).

Neil

Hi Neil,

Yes I still have your software - I am left with the titles I am
struggling to get off the microdrives! Not just copy protection - but
other issues, such as they load a specific sector after loading and use
that code, or the tape is unreadable!

Re: [Ql-Users] New Retro Auction Website

2009-12-15 Thread Neil Riley
How Excellent is that! Nice one Rich

I have about 100+ Atari 'Woody' 2600 VCS gear, games etc I may be
selling soon.

Very Impressive :-)

Neil

>>> Rich Mellor  15 December 2009 12:07 >>>
We have now launched a new retro auction website -
http://www.sellmyretro.com

The idea is to bring traders, collectors and users together - we have
added a wiki to each category and could do with some more wiki text (or

different languages).

If we have missed any categories, please let us know.

The fees are a lot cheaper than on ebay, and we are working towards two

types of webstore - a free webstore linked to a category, so that
traders can let people know where else that they can try, or a paid for

webstore (£5 per month) with 50% off all fees on the site.

Plenty more ideas in the offing, but we are open to suggestions!

Can I suggest that Quanta and QL Today open a webstore linked to the
Sinclair QL category, to establish a presence for themselves on the
site
- I will ensure that they don't get charged any fees for the time
being!

Re: [Ql-Users] XTC68 Sources

Adrian,

I think you read the mood of Dave's reply incorrectly. We hear the word
'Implying' only in police drama's where the suspect is being interrogated so
you could be forgiven for getting the wrong end of the stick :-) I too read
Dave's reply and baulked at the use of that one word, however, knowing
just how helpful the QL community is, I realised the true tone of his reply.

We are all friends here :-)

Neil

>>> "Adrian D. Ives"  14 October 2009 10:07 >>>
Dave,

Firstly, I'm not implying anything. I didn't mean to cause so much
offence by my request. I did not realise that XTC68 was exactly the
same suite as the C68 compiler which you have done a sterling job of
maintaining for many years. I thought, as the binaries I have were
dated 1997, that it was a different compiler that had not been
maintained in that time.

Now that you have set me straight, my request is herewith withdrawn
and I shall never raise the subject on this list again.

Regards,

Adrian

Re: [Ql-Users] Micro Men on BBC iPlayer, QL is mentioned!!

2009-10-09 Thread Neil Riley
I recorded the program! One strange thing, it showed a TV advert, Clive
Sinclair was leaping over other computers
of the time and it briefly showed the QL and a price of £645 or
thereabouts, Screen included perhaps! Haven't actually
watched the program as yet but no doubt it'll take me back to my
teenage years.

Just thinking back reminds me of the huge excitement at the thought of
owning my first computer, at the time, the ZX81 :-)
Of course, I really wanted the fantastic ATARI 800 but that was £700+
so. ( got one now though ;-) )

Ah, Nostalgia !

>>> Darren Branagh  09 October 2009 02:17 >>>
Just a quick one, for those interested Micro Men can be viewed for the
next week for free on the BBC's iPlayer service (only if you live in
the UK)

Follow this link :-

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00n5b92/Micro_Men/

It really is worth a look - I totally enjoyed it.

Cheers,

Darren.

It's just a starting point. As somebody who has written and cracked a
gazilion copy protections and eben briefly entertained the idea of
writing a book on the subject, I can say that it is a hundred times
more difficult to write a copy protection than it is to break it.

Hi Francis

I Remember buying Knight Flight back in the day, Don't think i have a copy now
I'm afraid but
as a Joust clone it was quite good. Of course, If you are a huge fan of
1980-2000's arcade machines
you could always check out M.A.M.E. and go hunting for Joust ROMS ( or one of
maybe 6000
other arcade machines).

If only the QL had the grunt and a large enough following to attract the
emulation fanatics out
there. If only!

I'm still looking for Spook and Pharohs Tomb and probably one or two others by
a certain
Janko Mrsic Flogel.

I'm an old Sinclair ZX 81 and Sinclair QL fan. I started on the ZX81 in

programming, for me the best basic ever made.

Since my QL was defective after having moved to several locations, I
recently bought a Sinclair QL (thanks to Rich Mellor !).

I'm looking for a very specific game called "Knight Flight" from Realtime

I'm highly interested if someone has it !

Thanks a lot to all of you for keeping the QL alive ! I'm so glad to see

I was taught CECIL in school with its 14 commands. It was very basic indeed, we
had to write our program down on pre-printed coding sheets and they'd be sent
off to the guild hall in Swansea to be typed into a large ICL . Two weeks later
we had the results. Luckly for me, all of my programs worked first time
otherwise they'd be a two week delay before you had another go !

There are some great Speccy & ZX81 emulators on the QL, sadly the speccy ones
aren't able to
lock the emulation speed at 100% ( sadly it goes as quick as it can which may
be well in excess of
100%). Thats the only negative into what is a remarkable achievement for the QL
, I'm always
being beaten at CHESS by my AURORA emulating a Spectrum ( Haven't managed to
run QL PSION
Chess on my AURORA, shame)

Now then, this is amusing ( at least to me! ), I wonder whether it's possible
for a PC, emulating a QL
can emulate a spectrum which is then emulating a ZX81 which is running a
program :-)

If you copied it to a DOS floppy then Aurora will not see filenames
longer
than 8+3 chrs.
Replacing the dot with the underscore effectively made the name longer

with no extension.
So check / rename the filename on the PC side.
Copy the *.zip to Aurora and rename to *_zip there.
Copying from QPC2 to a QDOS floppy will allow for a longer name.

Re: [Ql-Users] (no subject)

2008-03-19 Thread Neil Riley

Hi Norman,

I've only been on the QL 'scene' for a couple of years whereas
some of the guys here have been here since day 1, back in 1984
which is pretty eye opening. At least I had an original QL which i
waited months for for it to die within an hour of receiving it ( it
was
a very early machine ). Sadly, the QL was doomed from the start,
Sinclair made some drastic errors of judgement IMHO by aiming the
machine as a 100% business machine and why oh why didn't he fit
a 68000 instead of the 68008. Anyway, he did, it failed... but it lived

through hobbiests which is where the guys here come in..

back to your question.. Personally, I've amassed quite a lot of QL
equiplment in a very short space of time.

2 QL's , 1 Trump Card, 1 GC, 2 SGC, 1 full spec AURORA, twin ED drives,

loads of software etc etc

and can say that Id skip the Trump Card and look for a GC or SGC, they

are worth the extra money. Only concider a Trump card if your a bit of

a games player and don't want the games running too quickly.

Good Luck
Neil

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 19 March 2008 00:25 >>>
Hi Norman,

The Trump Card will give you bags of extra memory (an extra 640k on top
of
the base 128k IIRC), the ability to plug in DD floppy disks
(720k/disk), and
the always-useful Tony Tebby Toolkit II (aka Toolkit 2, or TK2).

If you're currently lacking any expansion on your QL, then a Trump Card
is
worth having for the disk interface & memory.

A Gold Card (or Super Gold Card, if you're one of the lucky few) will
not
only bring you bags of extra RAM (2MB or 4MB for GC or SGC
respectively), a
disk interface capable of driving DD, HD and ED drives (720K, 1.44MB
(?) and
3.2MB per disk) - but most importantly it also replaces the CPU with
(if I
remember correctly) a 68020 or 68040 (GC, SGC) - or maybe it's a
68000/68020, I forget. At any rate, it goes a lot faster...

GCs and SGCs are (rightly) considered the Rolls Royce of original
equipment
upgrades, before you get into the various QL-on-a-PC-card systems
(sorry,
can't remember it's name) and QL emulators.

Other things you might find useful to expand/improve your QL: Minerva
ROMs
(which make many improvements over base QDOS); SuperHERMES which IIRC
much
improves serial i/o & keyboard response (and also IIRC allows you to
add an
IBM type keyboard with relatively little aggro). Then there's QBIDE -
a
hard-disk interface; no longer manufactured, and I'd like one of those
myself...

Considering the relatively low level of sales Sinclair suffered
(despite
apparent evidence to the contrary on eBay - there's always plenty of
QL
stuff on sale there), it's remarkable just how much add-on hardware,
and
software, was - and in some cases still is - developed for it.

Cheers!
Ade. (using QLs since 1984!)

Most probably, something is sending either "cursor down" or "enter"
keystrokes spuriously to your window.

When it happens, try to use the "cursor up" keystroke, to see whether
that checks the movement. (probably, as soon as you release the key,
it'll go down again).

I still use SuperBasic (endlessly putting off converting to FreeBasic)

Re: [Ql-Users] Commercial QL Games

2007-10-17 Thread Neil Riley
I am lucky in that I own a prestine working original of The Pawn for my
QL , complete in it's Black wallet and With manuals / backup microdrives
etc. Id given up getting a working copy from anywhere until a member on
this list sold me his copy ( along with other Games ), Needless to say,
it's well looked after.

The Pawn "looked" different to other QL adventures, it's unique font
and green on black made it look as though it was running on an Apple II
/ TRS-80 etc.

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 15 October 2007 19:24 >>>

I'm aware of Rich's excellent site, thank you. In fact, Rich was the
one
who helped me source an NTSC Sinclair QL, which was much appreciated.
A
gentleman at my Website, Armchair Arcade, apparently found out the
story
regarding the Pawn (not sure where he got the info from):

"
Basically Pawn was written first for QL, then the QL died a horrid
death.
The quickest way to get the game on other machines was to write a 68k
QL
emulator, which became the "game driver" for Magnetic Scrolls. The
version
of Pawn or any other Mag Scrolls game (pre Wonderland) basically was a
68k
cpu emulator that ran QL compiled code on the pc/st/apple etc.

The first game released by Magnetic Scrolls was QL-Pawn, the originate
version 1.o of the later so popular The Pawn. QL-Pawn came on two
micro drives that were enclosed within a micro drive wallet that was
badged
by Sinclair Research. A sleeve was also produced for the wallet along
with
an instruction booklet containing a short narrative to introduce the
adventure. The game was text only, but it already had the powerful
parser which was one of the basics for the success of Magnetic
Scrolls.
QL-Pawn also was the only Magnetic Scrolls game that was produced for
the ill fated QL.

All the ports of QL-Pawn, then called "The Pawn" had version numbers
2.0 or higher.

Released: 1985
Distributed by: Firebird / Rainbird
Story: Rob Steggles
Graphics: Geoff Quilley
Programming: ?
Packaging: There are two different packages known, which can
roughly be separated into "small banner" and "large
banner" cover. The small banner version seem to be the
early releases and are rarer than the large banner
packages.
Goodies authoring: A Tale of Kerovnia by Georgina Sinclair
Package contents: A tale of Kerovnia (there exist at least two
versions
of this novella. The second issue states "Version II"
on the front page),
The Pawn Guide (platform dependent),
The Pawn Game play,
The Pawn poster,
Addendum,
Disc,
At least the early Atari ST versions contained
a "STOP PRESS" indicating a minor bug in the
online hint system (all ciphered answers must be
terminated with CO)
Platforms: Amiga, Apple2, Archimedes, Atari ST, Atari XL/XE,
Commodore 128/ 64, Macintosh, MS-Dos, Schneider CPC,
Sinclair QL, Spectrum 128K, Spectrum +3
Known versions: 1.0 (QL-Pawn)
2.0 (Atari ST)
2.2 (Amiga)
2.3 (Archimedes, Atari XL, C64, MS-DOS, Schneider CPC,
Spectrum 128k)
2.4 (Spectrum +3)
Version unknown: Macintosh

Addendum: The beautiful graphics were created with "Neochrome"
on Atari ST.

==

Major parts of the games were implemented with a tool called FRED.
Mainly
Fred was a data entry tool which was used to store the descriptions of
objects, rooms and NPCs and describe the properties of each object
(e.g.
weight, movable, burnable, container,...). Each object had a 14 byte
descriptor block. For The Pawn Fred 23 was used, the later games were
done with Fred 23junior, which were both developed by Hugh Steers. In
several games magazines (e.g. the german Happy Computer) FRED was
incorrectly denoted as a "language".

* Eventually this game code was compiled into an intermediate code
called
ELTHAM (Extra Low Tech Highly Ambiguous Methodology or alternativly
Extra Low Tech Highly Ambiguous Metacode).

* The ELTHAM code implemented a subset of the 68000 machine code. It
was
executed "natively" on ST, Amiga, QL, Macintosh and emulated on the
other systems. The virtual machine used up to 64k. On 8 bit machines
they used virtual memory mechanisms. On the C64 non-active pages were
held on the floppy disc. Only "read-only" pages were swapped.
"

It's too bad there's no master list of commercial games. I'd really
like to
see/run something that actually pushes the original hardware (though
mine is
expanded), but I doubt that that something exists.

Indeed he should.

You may not know that he is trying to re-form his old band. The last
I
heard was that all he need was a drummer.

This was far from an ordinary band. Dressing up (and sometimes down)
was the key, and Roy (and the rest?) had some amazing outfits. One
getup involved a (real?) chainsaw.

Ah yes, i remember now, there is a small port at the side of the QL for
additional
Microdrives isn't there, i forgot !!

I think I'm after QL Software rather than hardware at the moment, there is a
rather
large gap with regard to commercial games / languages etc. BCPL by Metacomco
for
example. Spook, Pharaoh and many others. Sadly, I gave away an old PC a while
back
which would of been an ideal candidate for the QXL !

I still haven't gotten around to sending Rich my SGC & QL so he can
marry the SGC ( tested as ok by Tony last year ) against a QL it'll work
with ( & one with working microdrives! ). I really must do this soon before
I loose interest in my black box QL.

I've ordered a Compact Flash IDE adaptor off ebay ( £4 all in ) and armed with
the
Qubide mod that Mr P Fox recommends, I will see if I can make my Aurora HD' less
by fitting a 512 or 1GB CF card.

[ql-users] Compact Flah IDE adaptors

2007-05-24 Thread Neil Riley
My plan is to stop using the HD in my Aurora and use a Compact flash or
suchlike instead.

Ok, cf ide adaptor 40pin. male or female connector?

Peter Fox mentions soldering being required...where, why.. ?

I've seen single and duel CF slot ide adaptors, would due adaptors work out the
box?

There adaptors seem to cost about £4 on ebay inc delivery which seems pretty
good
but there are a few to choose from, hence the questions.

cheers

They are still dirt cheap.
I got a 3GB one for about £40. It works brilliantly as the *only* drive
on a Linux based MiniItx internet server. Total consumption is a max 22W
and *totally* silent. A small USB will run it and the internet router
for well over an hour.

I have a 64mb CF that I will never use. All it needs to work with IDE
(and therefore Qubide) is a pcmcia adapter (plastic), and an IDE
interface card (this cost me about £25). Neither have any logic - they
are just connectors.

Not SD (Secure Digital), CF (CompactFlash) it is (same as with your
Spectrum hardware). CF cards can usually speak two protocols, one of
them being the IDE protocol. So they can be attached to pretty much
any IDE controller by a simple adapter. Look on eBay for "IDE
CompactFlash" and you'll find a dozen, prized between 5 and 20 EUR
perhaps.

PCMCIA Compact Flash, not SD.
You will be subject though to Qubide's partition.exe, ie max partition
size of 256mb, but no limit (as far as I know) to the number of
partitions.

I now have two USBwiz cards.
It was disappointing to find that the serial interface is not RS232C,
which means an addon. I will use a superHermes board for prototyping
RS232C. It will need an addon board with chip/4 caps probably.
A very odd omission on their part. Speed will be up to 230,400 with
superHermes.

The system looks promising. It supports SD (and MMC) as well as many
basic USB devices (printers, modems, mobiles, mice, joysticks, keyboards
and others). It also supports other USB storage like USB hard
drives/card readers and thumb flash.

The storage device support is a mite basic. It supports FAT8/16/32 only
and 8.3 filenames (damn DOS!) and directories. It also has a real time
clock - with an addon battery.

card to be slotted in, It has it's own firmware and thus commands for the
spectrum. Oh yes, a 1Gb + card would easily hold all spectrum software, a boom
to an old gamer like myself. I think it costs around £70 ( minus the SD card )
which is not bad at all. I know this has been banded about before re the QL but
the question begs to be asked, when and how much?

Cheers

It has been a little on the quiet side recently.

I wonder if people simply cannot get through all the spam about the German
stock exchange that seems to be very 'popular' at the moment. I'm getting about
300 of these on a daily basis.

Today, however, it is different. They are now arriving in German whereas before
they were in English. Oh hum !

Anyway, back on topic. I'm afraid that I don't have any 'bits' for you at
present, but happy hunting.

Cheers,
Norman.

[ql-users] Any old iron.

2007-05-23 Thread Neil Riley
Guys,

Firstly, it's all a little bit quiet in here, is everyone on their
Hols.!!?

Ok, to the point. My QL software catelogue is looking quite good, I
have quite
a nice collection of applications and Games but It's nowhere near
finished, not by a long
shot. I have requested and sucessfully purchased bits and bobs from
members on this list
in the past ( SGC, Aurora, Languages , Games etc ) and this is a
request to do it again.

All items will be lovingly looked after and more importantly, kept by
myself and certainly
not moved on ( just verify with my Wife, she'll unhappily tell you !!
)

So, If any of you guys have some 'working' but unwanted bits, want to
get shot of them and
obtain some currency then please get in touch.

oh yes, if anyone has stuff that is complete but not working then I may
be interested as I might
manage to get working software later down the line.

Ok, that's it, thanks in advance.

Neil

[ql-users] Slightly off topic but it is local election time

2007-04-27 Thread Neil Riley

Do you remember... 1979? , i suspect you chaps will but do you remember
this rather funny sketch from Not the nine oclock news. Only sending it
because i had a local MP brow beating me on my door step last night and
his waffle to some awkward questions i fired across his bow reminded me
of this.. enjoy... or flame me, your choice. have a good weekend
all. Neil

(ROWAN ATKINSON) A GRIMACING CROSS-EYED MP IS ABOUT TO ADDRESS AN
ELECTION GATHERING. BUNTING DECORATES THE BACKGROUND, ALONG WITH A LARGE
SIGN WHICH READS 'IT'S YOUR VOTE'. HE SPEAKS IN EXAGGERATED HAIR-LIPPED
TONES WITH LOTS OF LIMBS FLAILING.

MP (ATKINSON)
My Lord Mayor... (MELIFLUOUSLY) My Lady Mayoress... (DOES EXAGGERATED
WINK). My Lords, Ladies, Gentlemen, and members of the press, there
comes a time when we must all stand up and be counted. I am standing up
now, and can be counted.

BEAT

One! (GRINS, SELF-SATISFIED) And, with an election pending, 'one's are
about to become singularly important. Because Britain is facing the
gravest constitutional crisis... since 1380! And, you know, many of us
still remember the dark days! And if we're going to prevent the lights
going out on our lives once more, we must ask ourselves crucial
questions!

PAUSE, FLOUNDERS, CONSULTS NOTES

Where are we? How did we get here? Why did we come? Where do we want to
go? How do we want to get to where we want to go? How far do we have to
go before we get to where we want to be? How would we know where we were
when we got there? HAVE WE GOT A MAP?

PAUSES FOR EFFECT

But surely, surely you can see my point. 'Cos what I'm talking about is
life. Because life is one of those things, isn't it, that... that most
of us find it very difficult to avoid. In the words... in the words of
David Dimbleby, "life is uncertain". My life certainly has a certain
uncertaincy about it. And I'm certain that yours does to, and with your
uncertaincy, and my uncertaincy, there's certainly a certain degree of
uncertaincy about... of that we can be... quite sure...

CONSULTS NOTES

So, as a party we must not be frightened. And we must be prepared for
this fight. It is easier for a rich man to pass through the eye of a
needle, than it is for a camel to...

CONFUSED, CONSULTS NOTES

...that it is for a camel to. Because we don't want to end up, do we,
like the blind man, in the dark room, looking for the black cat... that
isn't there! Goodnight, thank you very much.

Re: [ql-users] Screen Resolution changing .....

Hi Duncan,

Whilst disp_size works a treat, a pointer drop down solution
does appeal. If you come across the source, i don't mind taking
a look.

Hi Neil,

Yes it is possible I wrote a pointer driven button that produced a drop
 down
menu to select the desired screen resolution some years ago when I had
a
functioning Aurora. The one thing that had to be done before switching
screen
resolution was to ensure that SBASIC was asleep on a button before
changing.
Over the years I have migrated the program to a Q60 and QPC2 so I am
not now
certain that it would run on Aurora. At the time Aurora only had mode 4

colours. I still use the program on the Q60 switching on the fly from
1025x256 high
colour to 512x256 high colour and then down to mode 4 colour if
desired.

I could dig out the sources if you are interested. I might even have an
 old
Aurora version on one of the old floppy disks. If you are interested.

Duncan

DISP_SIZE 512,256 should probably do the trick. But beware that all
jobs outside of the new screen area will be mercilessly killed.

[ql-users] Screen Resolution changing .....

2007-04-25 Thread Neil Riley
Hi Chaps

I currently run SMSQ/E 3.12 on my Aurora and I'm more than happy with
it although Id like to use it
more than time allows however one thing id love to be able to control
is the screen resolution which
for smsq/e via menuconfig is currently set to 1024*512. This of course
is fine for pointer env programs
as i can move windows around etc but i would love to be able to toggle
back to the QL's native resolution
on the fly for certain programs.

I suspect this is not possible on the fly and so onto the next idea,
and question. I suspect I could make
do with a modification to my boot program which allows me to select a
valid resolution to startup with.
this can then do one of the following.

1) inefficient. call a copy of SMSQ/E ( smsq_gold in my case) with
it's config block already set the same
as the required resolution.. ineficient due to having more than one
copy of smsq_gold on disk.

2) better, but is this possible. can the config block be tapped into
for smsq_gold v3.12 by an sbasic or
other language program prior to SMSQ_gold being called thus
allowing one copy of smsq_gold.

id guess this has probably been tackled before over the years but id
like to keep my HD as free as possible.

cheers

Neil
